I've been thinking about Next To Normal again lately off and on, "he's a hero a lover a prince" and how this fantasy version of her teenage son fills a mix of all these roles for Diana including a romantic partner. I feel like it flies under the radar for a lot of audiences since Gabe is, you know, dead/not real, but it's really interesting when you consider how especially Dan interacts with his presence like a rival.

#im too tired rn to fully go into my thoughts abt this in like an an eloquent way but like. i always thought that the weird incestuous vibes #between diana and gabe in next to normal is so interesting and i havent seen a lot of analysis of it which is a wonder bc its just so #glaringly obvious like with what u said abt how theres like this. rivalry between dan and gabe over diana and how diana very clearly chooses #gabe over him. and how in i dreamed a dance / there’s a world theres like. a fairly obvious undercurrent of desire there. and its just so #interesting and fitting for a character like diana to fantasize abt her dead son and. for a lack of better phrasing make him so perfect #there are romantic feelings involved. the whole family dynamic of the goodmans is just SO interesting and fun to think abt and analyze #ALSO incest isnt like. implied with natalie but i also think its interesting how its not just dan but basically all of the household #fighting with gabe for diana’s love and attention and always losing #i also think natalie goodman like. herself is just!! everything abt her character is so sad and desperate and i just love her so much #like i said im like tired so this is probably definitely just me rambling and not making much sense but!! always so nice to talk abt next to #-normal. also ohmygod i LOVE ur blog #asks
