the second you brought up kokomi i thought about her joining in,,,oop- i love them,, they're so cute and their dynamics would be too good together! gorou is messy and eager while kokomi is gentle and powerful.... they'll both have you crying by the end of it so them together means you'll pass out.... but, who wouldn't!

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior Koiwai Yotsuba?

I’m a buffoon, a complete idiot. I don’t know what I was thinking. I picked up a bundle of Yotsuba 1-14 from bookoff on a whim, flew through it, enjoyed it a lot, then sold them for some reason???

Now I only own the latest volume, 15, which I picked up after I sold the others, and I almost sold that one too when I realized, wait… I love Yotsuba… like, a lot… it’s a series I want to keep on my shelf to flip through it and reread. I’d even say it’s one of my all-time favorites. Some crazy decluttering energy possessed me and I put 1-14 in my tote bag, hopped on my bike, and zoomed over to my local bookoff. I’ve been agonizing, dying to buy back the series ever since.

But enough about my greatest regret in life, let’s talk Yotsuba.

She’s just like me, for real 😭

Yotsuba and her dad have just moved to a new neighborhood, how exciting! We join them in their daily lives of getting to know their neighbors, Yotsuba’s shenanigans, and finding joy in the mundane. Gosh, I don’t know about you guys, but appreciating the little things is always a win in my book.

From playing with the neighbor’s kids, to baby’s first randoseru backpack. And going rock collecting? Hell yeah! This manga makes me want to enjoy life so much. I mean, me and my friend literally drove from Tokyo all the way to Itoigawa on the Sea of Japan just to go collect some cool rocks. I’d be lying if I said the trip wasn’t at least partially inspired by this series. It’s one of my fondest memories.

They even had a rock museum with fossils and Jomon pottery! (Itoigawa is known for having jade wash up on its shores)

The art is charming as hell and reminds me so much of my first neighborhood in Japan. Yotsuba herself is of course, amazing, but the cast of characters are all lovable in their own right.

I have fond memories of riding the metro reading Yotsuba during my long commute from western Tokyo to the eastern side for my part time yakiniku job during my student days. I was living alone in a foreign country, going to school, working part time at a restaurant, and started freelancing as a translator.

I always looked forward to this commute since it was my only free time, and this manga was such a joy to de-stress with. It’s a chill, lighthearted read that is totally worth your time.

Everyday I pray to the manga gods for the next volume to get released.

There’s nothing more devastating then getting destroyed by a child, RIP Yanda 😔

Thoughts on the New Looks in Monster High: the Movie

I just saw the pictures and I have Thoughts. I'm not going to talk about every character here, just the ones that got me thinking.

Is that the school in the background? does it have a mystery shack / owl house-lookin eyeball on the front now? i'm not sure how i feel about this redesign, maybe it'll look cool in full.

RIP to Deuce's snakes 😔 although that hat makes me wonder if he's got some hidden. also why is he just wearing like, reading glasses? wasn't the point of the shades that you couldn't see his eyes directly? do these even work to prevent petrification??? (additionally, the fact that they're plain glasses makes him look more like Jackson Jekyll than Deuce.)

I'm not a fan of Cleo's colour scheme. i miss the gold. it represented her being royalty (and being unafraid to flaunt that), whereas this just kind of steps on other characters' toes a bit, like Frankie, who also wears some blue. don't get me wrong, i actually like blue as an accent colour for Cleo, just not the main one. also i miss her hair glitter, that’s probably too hard to do irl but it would’ve been cool.

Draculaura's doing double duty as a vampire and a witch. this kinda concerns me that they won't introduce an actual, separate witch character like Casta Fierce later on but eh.

Now the moment you've all been waiting for, it's time to address our resident sea creature. if Lagoona's design is caused by budget (like, them only being able to give a certain number of characters the full body makeup), i think i would've been okay with Draculaura not being pink or Heath not being orange if it meant Lagoona could be blue. (i mean, it's literally her last name.) I understand that the unique skin tones are important for all their designs, but like,,, Draculaura is a vampire and she has several other characteristics to make her recognizable (black and pink hair, fangs, heart blemish) and it appears they're giving Heath his firey hair so both of them can already easily be identified for who they are, whereas it might be hard to tell Lagoona is herself if you don't notice the water around her or the fins on her legs. also, he and Draculaura both have warm skin tones - i.e. it wouldn't be so jarring if they were kept as the natural skin tones of their actors. Lagoona, on the other hand, is meant to be a cool color, something completely different from any human skin tone and something that directly links to what type of monster she is - a sea creature. in short, although her design looks nice, it doesn’t look enough like Lagoona.
