Spa Day (Monstrous Roommates)
(on Ao3)
Virgil was vacuuming. He didn’t particularly care for it, but he had pulled entirely too much fluff out of his computer keyboard the night before; so when he woke up late afternoon alone in the apartment, he’d hauled the vacuum out and started at one end, working towards the other.
He’d never known a werewolf before Patton. He’d heard about them of course; vampires tended to be ridiculous snobs and loved to gossip. It was Remy’s accepting attitude not his need to consume all the tea that set him apart from the rest of the - as Logan had put it- “Blood drinking community” but that didn’t mean what he’d heard was necessarily accurate. The point was Virgil had no idea how Patton managed to shed while in human form. Technically they had a waiver on the lease for Logan’s ‘mobility dog’ but the landlord was cranky as fuck about it, and Patton spent most of his time inside the apartment in skin, not fur. This somehow did not stop the apartment from filling up with mounds of fluffy white and brown fur, especially in the spring.
Logan had said the first couple of springs after they’d moved to Florida were especially terrible, and he had tried to keep up by brushing Patton daily, Patton had a picture of himself sitting sheepishly next to a pile of fur that looked as big as he was, which he found hilarious. Logan had offhand commented that being in an entire house of werewolves was worse, and it made Virgil’s head spin. How did they not simply have carpets of felted fur? It was a mystery.
He’d changed the vacuum bag once and was on his second pass through when he heard the front door unlock and made a face. Patton always said he was going to vacuum, but he hated the noise, and even wearing noise canceling headphones, he tended to rush and miss spots in his desire not to be that close to the machine. Virgil shut it off and stuck his head around the corner into the hallway.
“Sup.” he said and blinked, because Logan was by himself, hanging up Patton’s service dog harness and taking his shoes off.
“Good evening, Virgil.” Logan said pleasantly. Virgil drifted over, kissing Logan on the cheek, before settling back on his heels.
“Not that I’m not thrilled to see you, but didn’t Patton go with you today? You had class in that lecture hall with all the stairs, and the horrible acoustics.”
“He did, but Roman met us as we were leaving campus, and said he was stealing Patton for a spa day. I went to the library alone to study afterwards. Are they not back?”
“Nah, I’ve been alone since I woke up. Been vacuuming.”
“Thank you.” Logan ducked down and gave Virgil a kiss which he smiled into, and maybe kissed back a little. They parted and smiled a bit at each other.
“I don’t know enough about spas to know if it’s been a long time or not.” Logan admitted.
“Me neither. I mean, Roman’s talked me into a pedicure, but that’s not, like, a spa experience.” Virgil had to grin remember the horrified expressions on some of the other customer’s faces as they’d come in, though whether it had been for his gothyness, Roman’s skin tone, or their blatant homosexuality was a question for the ages. White women of a certain type were just too much fun to wind up. It had been kinda nice, even if it had taken some real will power to let someone touch his feet. “Should we text him and find out when they’re coming home?”
“Or we could enjoy the quiet.”
They shared a smile, but Virgil shook his head. “I mean, I’m going to finish vacuuming, so I don’t know how quiet it will be.”
“Well the two loudest members of the household are gone, so I expect very, vacuum and all”
They shared another smile at their boyfreinds’ expense.
Virgil had gotten the vacuum back into storage, and was sitting quietly in the kitchen while Logan made dinner, when the door unlocked and Patton stomped in, looking quite out of sorts. It wasn’t very late, not even seven. It looked as though the ‘spa’ had included a haircut, his curls trimmed back to only a gentle tostle at the top.
“Love, please.” Roman begged following him in. “You look wonderful!”
“Logan tell Roman I’m not speaking to him.” Patton sniffed.
“Over a haircut?” Logan asked, bewildered.  Patton turned and glared at Roman.
“Patton, darling” Roman said, failing to his knees and taking Patton’s hands. “Tell me how I can earn your forgiveness sooner. I genuinely thought that you’d enjoy it!”
“What happened?” Virgil asked, pulling an earbud out. “How could a spa day piss Patton off?”
“Spa day.” Patton scoffed. There was polish on his nails, but oddly applied.
“It wasn’t a spa day?” Logan asked.
“I will give him that it was a very high quality dog groomer.”
“Oooh.” Logan winced. “Roman, I’m sorry, Patton isn’t speaking to you.”
“You looked like you were having fun!” Roman protested. “You were very good.”
Patton tensed up, his hair shifting on it’s own before he pulled his hands out of Roman’s and going over to hug Virgil hello. Roman fell face first on the vinyl flooring and didn’t move.
“I take it I shouldn’t compliment the shampoo?” Virgil asked, kissing Patton’s cheek in case that sent him into the dog house with Roman.
“It’s for a glossy coat and anti-flea and tick.” Patton mumbled into his shoulder.
“I wonder how long that’ll last?” Virgil said thoughtfully.
 “VIRGE!”
“What, you hate ticks, and I hate taking them off you!” Virgil protested, and pulled Patton into a hug before he could pull away, petting the short clipped hair on the back of his head. Relenting Patton sat in his lap. “You look super cute. Considering they cut it while you were a wolf, it translated well.”
“I know.” he mumbled very quietly. Roman hadn’t moved, as though he’d just given up on the world. “It really was very nice.”
“Are you teasing Roman?” Virgil whispered in his ear.
“A little. He bought me the most enormous apology ice cream.”
Virgil sniggered.
“I’m kind of wondering how long I can draw it out. It was a nice thought, even if it was super tacky.”
“You’re a bad man Patton Hart.” Virgil whispered and kissed him on both cheeks. “Do we get to see the whole effect?”
“Fine, since it’s done anyway.” Patton hopped out of Virgil’s lap, and Logan slapped a lid on the pan as Patton changed forms, since that tended to result in an explosion of shed fur. Nothing happened. Patton stood with his fore-paws on Roman’s back, making him moan piteously, and raised one leg, posing. He was substantially less fluffy than usual, close cropped, with a bit of extra fluff left around his face.
“Tahdah!”
“They groomed all the shed out!” Logan said, astounded. “That never would have occurred to me; after the brushing failed.”
“This is so much cooler. Like, 80% cooler for sure.” Patton said.
“What?!” Roman did his best to push himself off the floor, but was weighed down with a great deal of wolf. “You manipulative jackal!” he cried. “You LIKE it.”
Patton lay down on top of him, laughing, and licked the back of Roman’s head.
“Well, technicaly I didn’t say I didn’t. Just that it was tacky to promise me a spa and bring me to a groomer.”
“Logan, tell Patton I’m not talking to him.”
“Why is it always me?” he demanded.

Renovating a 36 Year Old Bathroom with Delta UPStile
Mandi Gubler of Vintage Revivals gives her parents’ 36-year old bathroom a beautiful makeover using Delta UPstile and other Delta offerings available at The Hope Depot. Read below to find out how she transformed this space!
Renovating a 36 Year Old Bathroom with Delta UpStile
I am so excited to be sharing my parents’ bathroom remodel! Believe me when I say, this thing has be 36 years in the making. You read that right, for the last 36 years this bathroom has remained completely unchanged and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it!
Taking on a bathroom renovation can be very daunting. Especially if you are like us and planning to DIY it. There are a lot of things that are easy and quick updates, stuff like repainting or changing out the lighting. But when you get into the bigger stuff, like replacing a shower it can be cause for pause. But like always, The Home Depot has got you covered.
Traditionally there are 2 camps in the shower department. Team Tile and Team Surround (annnnd for the record I would just like to state that I am Team Edward.) So what’s the difference?
Tile Showers
Tile is great because it’s fully customizable, but it requires extensive waterproofing and is a time consuming installation. Tile usually costs more and is associated with a more custom finish. In my opinion, if you’re new to tiling, a shower is not a great place to start.
Shower Surrounds
Shower Surrounds are pretty much the exact opposite. Being full wall units, they only require a small amount of waterproofing along the seams, and they are easier to install, but they aren’t customizable and tend to be associated with builder grade finishes.
Now You Can Have Both!!
With their UpStile line, Delta took the best of both worlds and created a semi-customizable surround. The panels are moulded to look like traditional subway tile with white grout and they have a channel in them where you can set real tile as an accent! Guys!! Anything your little heart desires! Though I would love to offer the advice of using white grout on the accent tile to tie it in with the faux grout on the surround. I used a great faceted diamond pattern that I found on homedepot.com.
Installation Tips
Installation was pretty painless, I’ve got tips to help you with your install!
Measurements
The first being measurements. As you are measuring for your new UpStile, keep in mind that it needs to go underneath the drywall. I may have had a few sleepless nights before we started install because WHAT IF THE MEASUREMENTS ARE WRONG!? thankfully they weren’t, but that’s never a fun fear to have grip you at 2 am.
Motivation
Next tip is more of an emotional one, take a shower before you start demo! Once you’ve ripped out your old tub, there is no going back folks. If this is the only shower in your home, you’ve got to get to work or else you’re going to be kitchen sink bathing until it’s back in.
Set Your Tub on a Level Surface
Once we had the old tub demoed, we brought in the new one and it was easier to set than I would’ve thought. I was having Friends “Pivot! Pivot!” flashbacks. One of the biggest mistakes that I think can be made is not setting your tub on a level surface. This is SO important because if the base isn’t level, then that walls wont be level and the shower doors wont be level (you get where this is going, right?) Make sure that your tub is level!
Follow the Instructions (for real!)
Tip #3 is to follow the instructions that Delta sends to a T. They are the most complete and easy to comprehend installation instructions that I have ever found, not just for the UpStile, but for all of the faucets and mirror as well. In fact as I’m writing this post and coming up with tips to share I keep deleting them because I realize that they are not in fact tips, but really brilliant insight that came in the instructions! (Also I’m super aware that reading instructions is not a tip, but if there is anyone in your life like my husband, they need all of the reminders they can get.)
Painters Tape is your BFF
As you’re caulking the seams, place painters tape on either side of the crack. Place and smooth your caulk, and then remove the painters tape and smooth it again. When you’re removing the tape it will leave a little raised edge. As you’re installing your tile, keep painters tape on the top and bottom of the channel until you are finished grouting. This will give you smooth grout lines and an easy clean up!
Set Up A Tile Jig
Set up a jig on your tile saw! With a few clamps and a piece of wood, I was able to quickly and precisely cut all of my accent tiles to shape. A jig will take all of the guesswork out of measurements!
You’ve totally got this!!
We replaced the vinyl flooring with this white scallop tile and used a medium gray grout. I love that the tile has a mixed finish, some of the tiles are glossy and some are matte. It adds a lot of dimension!
We kicked the outdated vanity and blue marble-ish countertop to the curb and replaced it with the most gorgeous vanity/counter combo of all time! The heavy oak grain on the wood coupled with the matte black metal accent gives the vanity a killer industrial/farmhouse vibe. With the lightly marbled counter/sink combo it looks like a million bucks.
Keeping with our matte black theme, we swapped out the outdated chrome faucet with the Delta Trinsic 2 handle bathroom faucet. This is a great option even if you’re not changing out your countertop. Because the handles are separate from the spout, and each other, they will fit in almost any 3 hole installation.
I wanted to add some serious character to the lighting and so instead of using a standard bathroom light, we used 3 sconces.
Last but not least, I made their old flat panel doors completely unrecognizable with simple in stock base moulding from Home Depot and mustard colored paint. This project took us three weekends and 18 trips to the happiest place on earth and it was worth every ounce of effort.
What was once an outdated space only a mother could love (my mother!) has transformed into a modern and approachable bathroom that anyone would be thrilled to have in their house.
And that my friends is the power of The Home Depot (and Vintage Revivals).

Welcome to day 3 in a series designed to take a closer look at some of the beautiful benches we received for our Create-A-Bench Auction to benefit the Open Door Mission’s Coldwater House. Bidding on all benches takes place HERE until 3pm Saturday, October, 20, 2018.  You can also vote for Best in Show HERE.
100 Years
By Lynn Miller
Lynn Miller is a local artist and quilter living in Pittsford.  She has been inspired by Rochester’s connections to women’s rights and suffrage movement.  Knowing that 2019 will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment allowing women the right to vote, Lynn chose this as the theme for her bench.
100 Years is painted in stately grey and navy that will fit almost any décor.  She painted a banner across the top that says “19th Amendment” and stenciled the years 1919 and 2019 on either side.  Elegant yet simple stenciling completes the design along the bottom of the seat back.
With so much pressure to freehand lettering today, it may be surprising to find an artist interested in using stencils, but Lynn has a history with them.  When I was a child Lynn (aka my mom) stenciled borders around the tops of the walls in my sister’s and my bedrooms.  They were not simple patterns either.  Lynn cut her own stencils and used multiple colors in each room.  This was a time consuming but rewarding task.  I loved my stenciled trim.
Thanks Mom, for stenciling my room so patiently and for using your talents to benefit others.
  Dream Big!
By Jackie Gasbarre
Jackie Gasbarre has three simple phrases hand lettered on her bench, Fly High, Touch the Sky, and Dream Big!  These 3 encouraging phrases could be written for every person on earth to read, but are they speaking directly to you today?
Jackie’s bench is full of movement and texture and it’s not just in the almost dozen hot air balloons soaring through the cloudy blue sky.  Each balloon is full of hot air and rising steadily toward high hopes and dreams.  It is these balloons that capture the attention right away with their detailed adornments.  Take a closer look at the rest of the bench though.
The seat and seat back are painted with detailed shading in creamy grey making it look like folded fabric from a distance.  The back of the bench is done in stripes of the same cream and darker grey adding whimsy to the back that compliments the detailing on the front seat edge.  Here Jackie has painted some wonderfully fun black and white checkers with a bit of gold pulled through mimicking a pattern we will not name similar to a style we also will not name.  Just below the checks is a row of elegant goldish fringe that is about an inch and a half wide.
So much time and though went into all the little details and shading of this bench, it is sure to be a high earner for Coldwater House.  Imagine entering someone’s house and being greeted with a seat like this to sit on and take off your shoes.  You would be sure to have a delightful visit.
  Beatles Come to Rochester
by Paul Button from Salvage Monkeys
The first thing I learned about Paul Button is that he has a great sense of humor.  For one, his business is called the Salvage Monkeys, and two: the motto is, “We rescue the discarded and make cool stuff.”  This is so true.  Everything Paul makes starts with another man’s “trash,” and every one of his “treasures” takes on a double meaning or requires another way of looking.
Paul’s bench, the Beatles Come to Rochester, is no exception. All the lettering and locally recognizable but outdated sponsors’ logos were cut out of adhesive black vinyl.  The caricatures of the 4 Beatles themselves are also digital images.
Disclaimer: there is no Beatles concert at Midtown Plaza on October 11 from 2-5 this year or any other upcoming year.  Please don’t be disappointed.  Instead, bid on Paul’s bench as a souvenir for the concert that wasn’t to be.
  Flower Garden
by Julie Wasson from tidbits & scraps
This is the easiest one for me to write about, because I don’t have to interview anyone.  I made it.  I will try to pretend I am not biased and it is not my favorite, but it is.  At least I can tell you more about my process.  I hope you find it interesting.
I gave my entire bench a base coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite, two coats actually.  Then I covered the seat back and the inside of the arms with ephemera, old papers, book pages, sheet music, tickets, etc.  Then I did a wash of the whole thing using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Coco and Provence (or Duck Egg, I don’t remember).  A wash is when you water down the paint.  I wiped off excess liquid as I was working.
Next was the most time consuming part.  I cut or tore all the flower parts and leaves and stems using papers that I had previously mono-printed using mostly acrylic paints (that’s a whole other story).  I adhiered all the pieces with Mod Podge both under and over the papers.  After all my flowers and butterflies were in place and dry I went in with charcoal and Stabilo pencil to add shading around everything.  This is the point when I stepped back and discovered I was seriously thrilled with the outcome.
I decided to seal the whole thing with a clear glossy spray by Krylon that dries super fast.  I had to do many layers before it becomes truly glossy.  There you have it.  The entire week long process in a nut shell.  And yes, I do custom orders!

January #mbbinstachallenge Look 1 (Week of Jan. 9-15): Minimalist Skin and Bright Pink Lips
Tumblr media
#mbbinstachallege!
Happy hump day! OK, here’s my second look for week #1 of the #mbbinstachallenge using the same idea of a bold, colorful element on super clean skin. Lots of you are participating, and I love what you’re coming up with!
In the look I did on Monday, it felt super weird to see myself in bright eye makeup with absolutely no color on my cheeks, but it feels TEN TIMES weirder to wear bright lips today without color anywhere else on my face.
Maybe that’s because when I normally do wear a bold lip, I’m usually also glammed up?
I dunno…
But I do know that when I look at these pics, the lips REALLY STAND OUT. All I see are lips, lips, lips!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pic I used for inspiration…
The model in the pic above looks like she’s wearing a bright pink lipstick outlined with a slightly darker liner. I wanted a similar vibe, so I went with MAC Candy Yum Yum and NARS Costa Smeralda Velvet Lip Liner, and I kept the liner purposefully un-blended to help it show up brighter in pics.

Also, it looks like this model isn’t wearing any foundation or concealer or mascara, or really anything at all, but your girl doesn’t roll like that, LOL! Oh, hell no. I had to put on a little something, so I used Make Up For Ever Smoothing Primer, and then a little bit of Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum before setting everything with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.
I’m getting so many ideas from your looks so far!
I love how precise @jewelia13’s bright lip are…
Taking part in the #mbbinstachallenge, issued by the lovely and talented Karen of "Makeup and Beauty Blog"! This week's challenge is "a look with a single bold, colorful element", which I accomplished by using Lip Ink's "Energy Red" on my top lip (lwith Urban Decay's "Mrs. Mia Wallace" lip liner) and Tattoo Junkee's "Riot" on my lower lip (with Urban Decay's "Big Bang" lip liner) for a look inspired by Mila Kunis' makeup in "Jupiter Ascending"! #mondaymotivation #selfie #boldlip #tattoojunkee #urbandecay #lipink #energyred #bigbang #greeneyes #charlottetilbury #shorthair #pixiecut #jupiterascending #instagramchallenge

And the glossy finish on this purple eye by @cosmetopiadigest is GORGEOUS.
Look 1 of the #mbbinstachallenge, hosted by @karenmbb, is a "bold, colourful element". I stepped out of my neutral comfort zone and used the @katvondbeauty Metal Matte #eyeshadowpalette – shades Nebula, Velour, and Glitz. As a rule, I'm iffy about bold shades, but I have sinusitis and can't go out, so I figured that this challenge was the right motivation, and the bright shades have cheered me up no end, despite the watery eyes. Do you have this palette? It has sold out online, but launched in Sephora Dubai recently and my Mum treated me to it before Christmas. Review coming soon.

This hot pink hotness by @niteowlchef makes me smile.

(Seriously, I have got to wear hot pink shadow more often.)

And Efrain’s double-stacked liner here is making me long for summer parties!!!
Estoy haciendo el desafío de Karen de Makeup and Beauty Blog, esta semana se trataba de hacer un look con un elemento vibrante y la piel natural / I'm doing @karenmbb #mbbinstachallenge this week was a bold element on clean skin. I used for skin @lorealmakeup Pro matte foundation in 107 as spot concealer, for my under eye I mixed it with @maccosmetics Lustre drops in Sun rush, my foundation was @natura.mexico tinted moisturizer and my powder was @citycolorcosmetics HD powder. For eyes I started with a nude pencil from Oriflame and use a green eyeshadow as first liner and @sleekmakeup Lantern blush from the Pumpkin trio as second liner; for brows I used L'Oréal Brow artist in Medium dark. Last for lips I used Sierra bees Lip shimmer in Pink. It takes a village to look this natural #nofilter #guyswithmakeup #cateye #brightcolors #makeup #slay #guymakeup

#mbbinstachallenge I'm so excited for this! The first challenge is bold color on clean skin. I did dark green eyeliner: @urbandecaycosmetics 24/7 Eye Liner in Mars topped with the emerald shade from the Viseart Bijoux Royal palette. Lips are @smithandcult Kissing Tiny Flowers, cheeks @narsissist Orgasm blush and @colourpopcosmetics Highly Waisted highlighter. @karenmbb

Originally wanted to go all out with @karenmbb 's #mbbinstachallenge but unfortunately this @maccosmetics Madly Sunny Pro longwear colorstick made my eyes a bit uncomfortable so I've to tone it down for going out (it's the overall dryness on my lids). I kinda like both though, for different occasions. Wearing @kjaerweis Liptint in Sensuous Plum on the lips and @hourglasscosmetics Ambient Lighting Palette for just the face glow. #madlysunny #sensuousplum #ambientlightingpalette #twindly

I'm doing @karenmbb's #mbbinstachallenge. It's a lot of fun and will hopefully break me out of some ruts. This week's challenge was for a single bold element on clean skin. I'm wearing
Tumblr media
#tomford Cream and Powder Eye Color in Golden Peach—I just wish it was a tad more bold. Also:
Tumblr media
#ysl Vinyl Cream in Rouge Remix as a stain (blotted heavily), topped with #glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom

#becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector. I usually wear this with Nars RCC, but felt the concealer would be too heavy for this look.

Savory oatmeal — it’s a thing
After I made it and posted this video on Instagram last weekend, I was really surprised that more people hadn’t tried it before. It’s great pre-workout food because it has complex carbs and protein.
You just take regular oatmeal, but instead of adding sweet things to it, like honey, fruit, milk and sugar, you add savory things to it, like veggies, cheddar cheese, eggs and spices.
Please tell me you’ve had savory oatmeal before! It’s the best, especially when you don’t want toast or something frozen.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
