The Best — and Most Shocking — Moments at the 2024 Emmy Awards

Sunday night’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, broadcast live on ABC, concluded with a surprising twist that left viewers talking: “Hacks” clinched the Best Comedy Series award over the favored “The Bear,” which was expected to repeat its win from earlier this year.

This year’s ceremony was the second Emmy event of 2024, following the 75th edition held in January after delays due to last year's Hollywood strikes. Consequently, "The Bear" stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won accolades for different seasons just eight months apart.

The drama categories diverged from the expected. With HBO's "Succession" absent from the competition, FX’s "Shogun" seized the spotlight. The critically acclaimed historical drama dominated, winning Best Drama Series along with Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada and Lead Actress for Anna Sawai. Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Lead Actress. Including Creative Arts Emmys, "Shogun" amassed a total of 18 awards, setting a new record for the most wins by a single season of television.

In the realm of limited series, Netflix's psychological thriller “Baby Reindeer” made a significant impact, securing six Emmys, including Best Limited Series. Richard Gadd, who starred and wrote the series, won Best Actor for his portrayal of Donny, while Jessica Gunning took home Best Supporting Actress for her role as Martha. Gadd reflected on Hollywood’s resurgence post-strike, emphasizing that "Baby Reindeer" proved a show could succeed without established stars or existing intellectual property.

Political undertones and nostalgic tributes punctuated the evening. Presenters and winners subtly referenced the upcoming presidential election, adding a layer of relevance to the proceedings. Candice Bergen, presenting the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award, joked about past political critiques of her role in “Murphy Brown,” while “The Bear” actress Liza Colón-Zayas encouraged Latinas to vote for their rights.

John Leguizamo used his platform to address the lack of authentic Latino representation in Hollywood, rebranding the term DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) as “Diligence, Excellence, and Imagination.” He spotlighted the progress made but called for further improvements in diversity.

Greg Berlanti was honored with the Governors Award for his career achievements. Known for shows like "Arrow" and "The Flash," Berlanti recalled television's role in his life, particularly its comfort during his youth. He acknowledged his late mother’s support and underscored the importance of telling diverse and inclusive stories.

The Emmys also celebrated TV parents with a nostalgic nod. Iconic TV dads, including George Lopez, Damon Wayans, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, reunited on stage. Similarly, TV moms Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton, and Susan Kelechi Watson highlighted the evolving roles of women on television, reflecting on progress since the days of restrictive portrayals.

John Oliver made a memorable acceptance speech for Best Scripted Variety Show, paying tribute to his late dog, who had been a beloved part of his family. Oliver’s heartfelt remarks about his pet, despite the play-off music, struck a chord with many.

Lastly, “The Traitors” emerged as a standout in reality TV, winning Best Reality Competition Series and breaking “RuPaul’s Drag Race” eight-year streak. The show, set in a Scottish castle and hosted by Alan Cumming, impressed with its high-stakes, campy drama, capturing the essence of competitive reality television.

Overall, the 2024 Emmys blended moments of surprise with celebrations of television’s past and present, showcasing both the familiar and the groundbreaking in the world of entertainment.

Alan Cumming won his first Emmy for emceeing The Traitors. The Scot actor took one of the two top categories in the field, Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program, The Traitors, and Peacock’s pop culture phenom.

In doing so, the Scottish actor, who had been nominated four times for his role on The Good Wife and hosting the Tonys, unseated the dominant winner in the Reality Host category for the past decade, RuPaul, who had taken the statuette the last eight years. In addition to RuPaul’s Drag Race‘s RuPaul, Cumming faced Survivor’s Jeff Probst, Top Chef‘s new host Kristen Kish and Shark Tank‘s Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Lori Greiner, Daymond John and Kevin O’Leary.

Alan Cumming, Laird of the castle, is eccentric, and absurdly well-dressed. It’s the real Ardross Castle in Scotland in the reality TV show The Traitors. located in Ardross, just outside the town of Alness in the Highlands on the northern shore of the Cromarty Firth 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

Property of the McTaggart family. Today, the castle and its grounds are used as a venue for a filming location for the US and UK versions of The Traitors.

The Traitors beats RuPaul's Drag Race at the Emmy Awards

Alan Cumming’s The Traitors has beaten RuPaul’s Drag Race at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards today (AEST).

Drag Race is the most awarded reality show in Emmy history, but it’s just not their year this year.

In the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category, The Traitors US beat Drag Race.

Alan Cumming accepted the trophy while wearing a medal featuring the colours of the trans flag on his chest as he accepted the trophy.

“We are so grateful because we are a new show, and when [the Emmys] like something, you tend to stick to it, which is good quality, but we appreciate it all the more,” Alan said.

Alan Cumming also thanked everyone at the castle where they film The Traitors giving a shoutout to “the cast and crew who work so hard and get so wet by the Scottish weather.”

“I also want to thank Scotland, I owe it everything and it’s such a beautiful co-star,” Alan said.

“I also want to thank Holland because so many of these shows, like The Traitors, were first made in Holland.

“They obviously have something in the water, so let’s find it. Let’s drink it and all America’s problems will be solved.”

A week ago at the earlier Creative Arts Emmys, Alan Cumming also won the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program Emmy for his camp turn hosting The Traitors.
