idk why i’ve seen a handful of people calling the shape of water a basic or over used plot like

- genuine monster/human love story with both chaste and sexual content (sure it’s monster/human, but not all monster/human is equal.. idk how tf ppl could compare that to beauty and the beast? OTHER than it’s monster/human)

- the monster stays a monster (unlike beauty and the beast where he suddenly turns into some buff white dude with blonde hair)

- features a mute woman (references little mermaid, only she has more sway over the world than ariel ever did)

- she only uses sign language, which ariel never even used

-... who stands up to aggressive powerful men for pure ideals

- is by a mexican-american director who has a habit of making diverse and political content with his more personal/artsy films (the devil’s back bone, pan’s labyrinth,)

-.... which literally bleeds over into the shape of water, as actually stated by del toro himself (the heavy themes of being unable to communicate- or others being unwilling to try, the stereotype of being a maid/janitor, the government being against you and suspicious of you) being about his experience as a mexican immigrant

- along with a black woman who has to face similar conditions at the hands of those in power (powerful white men)

like maybe you gonna find a good number of indie comic creators out there, unknown writers, off-brand romance books u find for 90 cents at a thrift store, of this kinda content but.. i really haven’t seen something like this in film. if i knew one was out there like that, i’d watch tf out of it since im a big monster fucker and die for cheesy romance

buuuut “it’s basic” “nothing new” “unoriginal” in major films,, by some mystery, according to ppl..???
