Me: Okay, Google, how do I make one faction in Skyrim hostile to another faction?

Google: I got you. You want to know how to make normally hostile NPCs non-hostile, right?

Me: No. I want to make NPCs fight each other depending on their factions.

Google: Oh, I see. You want to know how to make NPCs that should be hostile to the player but aren't hostile again.

Me: No, I don't. I want to make NPCs hostile to each other. The player is irrelevant.

Google: I got it.

Google: You want to figure out how to make NPCs that are supposed to be going after the player but are instead going after each other stop doing that and start going after the player, right? Here are four forum threads about that.

#THE PLAYER #IS #IRRELEVANT #i thought it would be a simple matter of just setting the factions to enemies in the faction settings but #skyrim by default doesnt appear to do that #in fact they appear to have used that function primarily to prevent bandits from indiscriminately murdering everyone #like during that one companions radiant quest where someone will be kidnapped by bandits #they have to be added to a special faction thats friends with the bandit faction or the bandits will just kill them #but yeah basically no other factions actually use that feature #the companions do but like. i honestly cant tell what its supposed to be accomplishing #sometimes there are notes explaining it but not in all cases #i know better than to assume any of this will be intuitive. but maybe i just do the intuitive thing load up the game and see?#i feel like. i mean most of the time npcs in skyrim are reacting to aggression #the town guard fights the bandits not because the town guard is programmed to fight bandits but because the bandits attacked them #the aggression comes from the bandits #and for the most part thats fine but like. hmmm #idk this calls for experimentation
