IPL 2021: 3 Teams that can give a tough fight to CSK in the tournament
They've qualified for the playoffs on 10 events from a possible 11.  The only time that they did not qualify was past year, revealing how dominant they've been.  The lack of important players and how the championship was held at the UAE appeared to have influenced them.  But, their group is a lot better than a seventh-place finish along with also a return on India will be a massive benefit for MS Dhoni's team.
Together with Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and Nathan Coulter-Nile because their key seamers, they've a well-rounded speed assault.  Adam Milne is also a superb backup and besides Boult, who's much more of a new-ball expert, they've three gun bowlers who can bowl in any point.  Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya match each other very well throughout the middle overs since Pandya keeps things tight while Chahar is assaulting and selects up wickets. Following is a glance at 3 groups that may provide the Super Kings a difficult fight for your IPL name:1.
No surprises !  Mumbai Indians has become the most prosperous group in IPL history together with five names and all of these have come because 2013, their dominance is not there for all to see.  Having won back names, they will now wish to break records and win an unparalleled hat-trick of IPL names. RR has been very poor because they won the name in 2008 and have fought to reach those peaks.  They have not even finished in the top two since and have qualified to the playoffs on just three occasions.  The Rajasthan-based team finished eighth on the points table and it was obvious that something needed to change. They have a lot of big-name Indian batsmen like Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, as we all know, using a solid Indian center is quite important.   They've batsmen for every sort of scenario right from managing collapses to being competitive from the very first chunk.
The likes of Moeen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham are just likely to strengthen the group, along with the yield of Suresh Raina will probably be a huge boost for their batting order, which failed to provide the products last year.  Overall, CSK have a fairly good group, and you can expect them to struggle for the name.  But, they will clearly have stiff competition to the decoration. They've appointed Sanju Samson as captain and roped in Kumar Sangakkara among the main guys behind the scenes.  They had a Excellent auction and was able to buy the likes of Chris Morris, Shivam Dube and Mustafizur Rahman.  Their beginning XI could have batting thickness till No.9 and as many as nine bowling choices.  Having such a staff is very vital in T20s since it gives one a lot of flexibility when required. Delhi Capitals attained their first-ever last last year and has shown great signs of progress under Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting during the previous few seasons.  Given that their group is quite similar to that which they had a year ago, there's absolutely no good reason for their performances to fall off. An opening mixture of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler has the capacity to destroy any bowling attack and they have a strong Indian middle sequence of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia.  Chris Morris and Jofra Archer aren't two of their greatest bowlers in the league, but they're also powerful with the bat in hand as finishers.  Their Indian bowling based on Shreyas Gopal, Kartik Tyagi and Chetan Sakariya has excellent potential also.
Marcus Stoinis provides balance to the group as their No.6 while additionally bowling a few overs.  Overall, their staff looks very great on paper and the only problem they may face is if their South African quick bowling duo may not be accessible for the first two or three weeks because of international obligations. Chennai Super Kings is that the second-most successful IPL group of time, having raised the trophy on three occasions.  After winning the title in 2010 and 2011, they proceeded to a seven-year prize burial prior to winning it in their recovery season, 2018.
Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma really are among the greatest opening combinations from the match, and they have a superb copy in the kind of Chris Lynn, that may want to fill in to the Southern African keeper when he's inaccessible during the first two or three weeks.  Their midst purchase of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard along with the Pandya brothers is arguably the most damaging in the championship.  Three of the batsmen were one of the best seven run-scorers last year and all three of them scored at over 140 per 100 balls.

White Sox Pitching
Tumblr media
Chicago’s pitching has been really good—second in baseball in ERA+ (127), and while as a team they aren’t the best in any single category, they’re consistently in the top 10 in pretty much every pitching statistic.
Starting the first game of the series is Carlos Rodon, who threw his first career no hitter earlier this season.
Tumblr media
Rodon is having a career year this year—he was someone who always had a lot of talent, but struggled to stay healthy and be consistent. The White Sox actually non-tendered him in December, but ended up signing him for less than he would have gotten in arbitration later on as nobody else seemed to be really interested in him. The biggest change so far this season and the reason why he’s been so good?
Tumblr media
His fastball has completely changed his career around—he didn’t have enough innings to qualify for 2020, but if he did, his 2.2 mph increase on his fastball would be the 8th biggest increase in all of baseball. All the other guys ahead of him are players bouncing back after a bad 2020 or relievers, as opposed to this being a new career high for him. His wOBA against his fastball is less than half what it was in 2019, and he’s getting nearly triple the whiff rate with it as well. His fastball had a +8 runs value in 2019, and now it’s -9, the sixth best pitch in all of baseball.
On the left there is his 2019 fastball location, on the right is his 2021 fastball location. It’s been a little higher in 2021 which helps, but the biggest difference is that in 2019 he was throwing about 91mph with low spin rate, and now he’s throwing 95mph.
Tumblr media
Rodon has always had a good slider, but now that he can play the slider off a really nice fastball it’s become a dangerous weapon—his slider is sitting about 85mph but with nearly double the horizontal break as the average slider. Interestingly enough, he’s willing to throw the slider against both righties and lefties, although he does throw it more against lefties. He also mixes in a changeup against righties, even if it’s not good (xBA is .278 and xSLG is .348.) The dominant fastball/slider combination has been lethal against lefties. Left handed hitters are slashing a disgusting .077/.111/.077 against him with just two singles and a walk allowed this season. Righties aren’t doing much better, but still better: .176/.276/.275.
The Game Two starter is Dylan Cease, who the White Sox acquired alongside Eloy Jimenez for Jose Quintana. A highly regarded prospect, he and Michael Kopech (acquired in the Chris Sale trade) were expected to be the future aces in the South Side, but until this year he hadn’t really put it together. Last year he had a 4.01 ERA, but a 6.96 xERA as he had an extremely low .238 BABIP against. This year? Some mechanical changes have helped to make his insane arsenal of pitches live up to their potential:
Tumblr media
Cease is mixing a four seamer with elite spin rates and can reach triple digits with an absolute hammer curveball and a wipeout slider. There’s not a lot a hitter can do when you have the stuff that he does when he can mix it well and take advantage of it, and previously he just was not doing that:
Tumblr media
That’s his 2020 pitch location. A lot of sliders in the zone, a lot of high fastballs away from righties, and his curveball was all over the place. Compare that to 2021:
Tumblr media
Fastball is still in the zone, but when you have the velocity and spin that Cease has you can live with that. The bigger change is that the slider is now off the plate more, making it harder to get good contact on it, and the curveball is all low but accurate—playing the huge breaking ball off the high fastball is nearly impossible to hit, especially with a nearly 20mph difference between the two pitches. This graphic is a little messy, but I think it gets the point across:
Tumblr media
All that red? Those are 97mph fastballs with a ton of spin. The yellow, green, and purple are sliders, change ups, and curveballs going way slower and also with a ton of movement. Easy to see why it’s hard to get hits off him.
Starting Game Three is Dallas Keuchel, who’s coming off a season where he finished fifth in Cy Young voting. Last season he had a 1.99 ERA and led baseball with a .3 HR/9 rate, but his xERA was 4.27 and as noted many times- he only faced hitters from the AL and NL Central, and outside of the White Sox there was exactly one other team with a 100 wrc+ or better which was Minnesota. Keuchel has been bad this year however, with a 4.44 ERA and an xERA of 5.80, and  he has a couple really worrying signs—first percentile in K% (only striking out 11.6% of batters he faces) and is in the sixth percentile in xBA allowed. If you’re not striking guys out, you really cannot give up the kind of contact that Keuchel is letting (or the 7.6% walk rate).
That said, in his regular season career against the Yankees: 4-4 with a 2.22 ERA in eight starts, with two complete games, a shutout, and a 0.918 WHIP. That’s not even including his postseason starts, where in two of the three starts he went at least six shutout innings. So, while Keuchel has stunk this season, I’m still always going to be worried when he’s on the mound against us.
White Sox Hitting
Tumblr media
Despite all the drama going on with LaRussa and unwritten rules and everything, and despite losing Eloy and Robert for most of the season, this is still the best lineup in baseball right now with a 115 OPS+. They are third in BA (.260), second in OBP (.347), eighth in SLG (.412), fifth in doubles (70) and sixth in triples (9). They’re also fifth in extra bases taken %, and tied for first in the percentage a runner on base scores (36% of the time.) If you like watching offenses that don’t rely on the homer, this is your team- the White Sox have only 41 homers (23rd in baseball) but are consistently putting the ball in play.
Having Yermin Mercedes, Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, and Nick Madrigal really help in that regards. Madrigal and Moncada don’t really have a lot of power, but both put the ball in play consistently. Mercedes has come out of nowhere to lead the majors in batting average as is putting up an All Star season as well.
Tim Anderson has been one of the most fun players in baseball to watch over the past few seasons, and he’s been the big competitor to DJ LeMahieu winning batting titles—he led the majors in 2019 with a .355 batting average, and was second in the AL last year with a .322 average. A big part of that success is his batted ball types:
Tumblr media
He’s able to spread the ball out across the field (with a ton of balls directly up the middle, isn’t popping the ball up (which is a near guaranteed out) and his grounders have been finding holes. He’s also been elite against fastballs over the past few years, his lowest batting average against fastballs in a season has been .352.
The big issue for the White Sox is their outfield — just not getting any hitting by anyone with Eloy and Robert out.
Yankees Focus on: Corey Kluber
Kluber just pitched the first no-hitter this century for the Yankees, and deserves a bit of a a breakdown for how successful he’s been his last few starts:
Not exactly a murder’s row of offenses, but outside of one inning against Baltimore he’s been really, really good!
Tumblr media
Kluber so far has had reverse splits:
Tumblr media
Which is almost entirely based on how disgusting his cutter and changeup have been this year. His change up, which he’s throwing nearly twice as much as he did when he was a Cy Young candidate, has a .125 BA against (all singles) and a near 50% whiff rate. He’s using it to put away batters 37.5% of the time, and the 80mph exit velo against it is elite. His cutter has always been his best fastball, and while it’s not the fastest pitch or and doesn’t have a ton of spin on it, he is locating it really well against lefties:
Tumblr media
Against righties, he hasn’t had much success, mostly because his sinker still is struggling—.304 BA against, .543 SLG against, and it’s allowed five of his ten extra base hits. This has been a consistent problem for Kluber however- his sinker was worth +7 runs in 2017, +9 runs in 2018, and +7 runs in 2019 as well. Part of that is his sinker location:
Tumblr media
That’s a lot of sinkers up and over the plate, which are usually pretty hittable. His saving grace against righties though is his breaking ball, which is still an elite pitch: .189 BA against and .264 SLG against, with a 38.5% whiff rate. When you look at how he’s located the cutter, the change up, and the breaking ball, and compare it to a zone chart for his wOBA allowed, it makes perfect sense:
Tumblr media
Anything away from righties (his cutter and breaking ball) or inside or low and away vs lefties (cutter and changeup) has been perfect. Anything up and in on righties is getting smoked, which happens when you don’t have elite speed or spin rate on your heater.
Another impressive thing is his willingness to use different pitches in different counts:
Tumblr media
To me that says he’s feeling comfortable and back to being the Kluber of old, he’s obviously using the breaking ball and changeup more often in two strike counts, but he’s still using them when he’s behind in the count as well. You can’t just sit there and say “awesome, he’s gotta throw a fastball here” or “I’m just going to lay off the low and away breaking ball” because he’s using everything in his arsenal at all times.
After getting moved over to having Higgy as his personal catcher, he’s been dynamite as well. As always, it’s hard to know if it’s specifically Higgy doing anything or if he would have done the same with Gary, but he’s been cruising with Higgy:
Tumblr media
Finally, maybe the best news for Kluber being back are these stats:
Tumblr media
That’s Kluber’s stats per pitch in the game. The next graphic is Jameson Taillon’s stats per pitch:
Tumblr media
Taillon has been starting hot, but getting worn down and lit up later in his starts. Kluber has been consistent and isn’t getting tired.
Kluber when he faces opponents for the first, second, third time:
Tumblr media
As opposed to Jamo:
Tumblr media
And lastly, Kluber on normal rest vs extra rest:
Tumblr media
vs Jamo:
Tumblr media
All of those are saying to me that Kluber is back to normal—he’s not getting tired, he’s able to use all his pitches throughout the game and mix things up, and he doesn’t need the extra time between starts. At this point, I think Kluber is officially back to being an elite pitcher, now it just comes down to whether or not he can last through October.

Standing Seam Metal Roof Cost
Standing Seam Metal Roof Costs 2021 (Installation, Replacement, Pricing)
Are you looking to install a standing seam metal roof? You're in luck. I've built hundreds of roofs over my lifetime, and I'm ready to help you navigate the wild and wonderful world of roofing. From fair pricing to DIY instructions, this is everything a homeowner would ever need to know about installing a metal roof.
In this guide, I'll teach you:
The average cost of a metal roof
Why metal roofs are more expensive than other roofing materials
What preparation is necessary for a metal roofing installation
How to DIY a standing seam metal roof or fastener metal roof
The tools you need to approach a metal roofing installation project
What types of materials you'll need to install a metal roof
How to save some cash on your metal roofing installation.
Let's dive in!
What Is The Average Cost Of Standing Seam Metal Roof Installation?
The average cost of a standing seam metal roof — including installation — is anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000. You can expect to pay roughly $8 - $15 per square foot, but the type of metal, style, slope, and pitch of your roof all influence the overall cost. As an example, steel roofs and zinc roofs will generally cost less than high-grade aluminum or copper roofs. There are also some "hidden" costs that can sneak up on you. These include things like coloring, replacing the roof deck, warranties, or replacing the underlays.
Expect to pay around $2 extra per sq. ft to replace the decking and another potential $1 per sq. ft to replace the underlay if it isn't bundled into your contractor costs. I generally recommend lighter-colored metal roofs, since they reflect heat better. In fact, a darker roof can run over 50-degrees hotter in the dead of summer, so take that into consideration.
Now, if you already have a metal roof and you're looking to get it repaired, you'll pay less than a full installation. A metal roof repair (depending on the damage) will run you anywhere from $500 to $5,000. But most repairs cost around $1,200. I generally recommend having routine maintenance done to your roof around every two-year mark. But your roofing contractor will give you a more accurate estimate based on your material, gauge thickness, and overall roof construction.
Why Are Metal Roofs More Expensive Than Asphalt or Shingles?
Installing an asphalt roof will run you around $1.50 to $4 per square foot. Shingle roofs will cost a little more at around $2 to $5.50 per square foot. So, metal is significantly more expensive than other roofing systems. I go into this in a little more detail in my metal roofing post, but I want to touch on it here. Metal roofing requires more labor, skill, and time to install, and it's also a more costly material all-around. But it's usually worth it. Metal roofs made out of zinc or copper can last for over a century, and even aluminum roofs last for around 50 years on average. These roofs are resistant to high winds and they have an unparalleled lifespan.
So, if you're planning on staying in the same home for the next couple of decades, the upfront cost of metal is often worth it. It prevents you from having to install a few roofs over the lifetime of your home. Of course, properly maintained asphalt can last a long time. The problem is, most people don't properly maintain their asphalt. Check out my project guide on asphalt shingle repairs if you're looking to replace your asphalt with metal. It may help you fix your problem without having to splurge on a new roof. Metal roofing requires less maintenance and care, so it generally lasts longer.
What Preparation Is Needed for Installing Standing Seam or Exposed Fastener Metal Roofing?
As always, I'm a huge fan of DIY projects. Now, I want to give a clear warning: installing roofing is not for everyone. It's dangerous on your roof, and you need to take the proper safety precautions and have a good handle on power tools. But, if you want to save a little cash, DIY can help you cut costs.
To prepare for a metal roofing installation, you'll need the following:
You absolutely need a full-body harness with a fall protection system. This includes the harness, roof anchors, a shock-absorption lanyard, and a lifeline. You can see how this works via these OSHA guidelines.
Before you purchase materials, you need an accurate and detailed measurement of your roof. To get this, you'll need to measure every single nook and cranny of your roof (e.g., flanges, gables, ridge caps, etc.). Then, you'll measure the slope of your roof (you'll need a carpenter's level). Multiply the total area measured by the slope. That's your square footage. Purchase around 10% more than you need, and make sure the roof panels are around 2 inches longer than you need — since they get bent and will also protrude a little.
You'll also need a hammer and some roofing insulation. When you rip off your shingles, you may need to repair some damage or pound in some nails. If your damage is extensive, you may even have to go in and completely replace the decking.
Finally, you'll likely have to invest in an underlay. I highly recommend a waterproof underlay. Personally, I prefer Grace Ice and Water Shield. It's extra peace-of-mind.
Check out the video below where I cover more information on the Grace Ice and Water Shield:
youtube
These three steps are required for both types of metal roofing (i.e., exposed fastener and seamless). However, the rest of the project after these three steps is a little different depending now on which type of roofing you're installing. Let's look at how you install each type. For the following guides below, I've assumed that you have measured your roof, repaired any decking damage, and laid down your underlay. I'm also going to post videos from some of my favorite builders. I think most builders are visual learners, so I'm hoping these videos will help.
How Do You Install Exposed Fastener Roofing?
1. Square Your Roof
Before you lay a single panel down, you need to square your roof. Every vertical line of your panels should run square to your eave. I recommend leaving a gap at the peak of the roof. That way, you can make any adjustments you need during the roofing process. When you walk over the metal sheets or drill them down, they often fan-out/fan-in. If you don't square your roof, you may find it difficult to put all your panels in the right spot. The easiest way to "start square" is to use chalk or a carpenter's pencil to draw squares across your inlay.
Cut Panel to Length and Add Eave Trim
Time to bust out your panels. You'll want to add roughly 1.5 to 2 inches to the end of each panel. So, if your roof calls for a 25-inch panel, you'll want to cut it to 27 inches. You want to leave some room to overhang the eave, which you'll also want to start cutting at this point.
I recommend cutting the eaves first, putting them in place, and then measuring the metal roof panels flush to the eave. Next, add two inches to the total panel length, and cut the panels. To do this, you can draw a line on the bottom of the panel, and use a square or tape measure to draw a perfect line across the entire panel. Finally, take a circular saw to your eave panels. Here’s a handy video to break down the process to get you ready to apply sealant tape:
youtube
Apply Sealant Tape
You should apply your sealant tape to adhere the panel to the eave. You want your tape across the entire eave. This should secure your panel to the eave. This will help it stay in place for the actual panel installation process.
Install with Exposed Fasteners
The last step is to install your panel using your fasteners. Always make sure that your panels are flush to the eave before you start drilling. I recommend drilling into the fastener strip first, which will keep the panel straight as you drill fasteners directly into the face. Try to keep your drill as vertical as possible. You want clean drills. I will say this: don't install your fasteners too tightly. You left that extra inch of space, but if you install too many tight fasteners, your metal panels will fan, which can make the entire process a pain.
How Do Your Install Hidden Fastener (Standing Seam) Roofing?
1. Install Offset Cleat
I love standing seam metal roofing. The clean look of a flush metal roof is (in my opinion) ideal for residential homes. It looks beautiful, and it has excellent durability. Better yet, standing seam roofs don't rely on little neoprene washers to prevent leakage. Exposed fasteners are a liability. If the little washers on those fasteners fail, water has a direct entry path into your underlying structure — which is a recipe for damage and corrosion. Since standing seam roofs clip into an offset cleat instead of hanging over an eave, they're far less likely to leak.
It all begins and ends with the offset cleat (some people use the term drip edge interchangeable with offset cleat). Instead of having your panel jut out an inch past the eave — like you would on an exposed fastener roof — offset cleats keep your roof flush by fastening the panel directly into the cleat.
2. Bend the Panel Edge
To get your metal roofing panels clipped to the offset cleat, you need to cut along the spine on both sides of the panel, bend the standing seam panel under the offset cleat, and then close the rib.
3. Install with Hidden Fasteners
Finally, you simply need to fasten the roof along the fastener line. It's really that simple. You can take a hammer to the cleat bend if it's not straight. But you only need to do this if you bent the fastener manually.
What Are The Tools Needed to Install Metal Roofing?
Let's quickly look at some of the tools you'll need to DIY a metal roofing installation.
Roofing hatchet or nail gun
Pencil (preferably a carpenter's pencil)
Tape measure (make sure you know how to properly read it)
Sheet metal snips
A tool belt
Full body safety harness
Roof anchors
Shock-absorbent lanyard
Lifeline
Sheet metal hand seamer
Sawzall (for decking repairs)
Drill (preferably cordless)
Caulk
Nails
Remember, tools are only one part of the puzzle. You need to know how to use them correctly. Believe it or not, something as simple as drilling a hole can actually get a little complicated. If you're new to any of this, check out some guides on my YouTube channel. Don't go into this blind. I have plenty of free advice in those videos, and I give you some insights into my decades of building experience.
What Additional Materials Will You Need For Metal Roofing Installation?
Before you start measuring, buckling up your harness, or busting out your handy tape measure, you need a few must-have materials. The biggest one is underlayment. You absolutely must put down new underlayment before you put down your metal roof. Failing to lay down underlayment is like driving a new Porsche on bald tires. It doesn't make any sense.
I also strongly suggest a good pair of work boots. KEEN boots seem to be the best fit for my foot, but everyone is different. So, you should try some on at your local store if possible. Also, grab a pair of work gloves and some safety sunglasses. Laying down roofing is tedious and can rip up your palms. Plus, you don't want any sparks or debris flying into your eyeballs. In general, try to dress safely. Don't underestimate the danger and roughness of roofing.
How To Save Money On Standing Seam Metal Roof Installation?
There are two ways to save money on metal roof installations.
DIY your installation
Get installers to compete on your project
The guide above should help you with DIY. Remember, DIY isn't always cheaper. If you have no existing tools, it may cost you more to complete this project solo. However, you get to keep the tools, so that's always a win. For those of you who want to have a roofing professional install your roof, I highly recommend posting your job online and having them bid for it. Contacting your local roofer is great. Gloucestershire v Worcestershire: Chris Dent’s dismissal puts Pears on top
Tumblr media
Chris Dent scored 159 runs for Gloucestershire all over both innings
Bob Willis Trophy, Bristol County Ground (day three): Gloucestershire 267 & 135-3: Dent 67, Hankins 38* Worcestershire 428-5: D’Oliveira 91*, Mitchell 80, Libby 77 Gloucestershire (3 pts) lag Worcestershire (6 pts) by 26 runs with 7 wickets left Scorecard
Worcestershire seamer Charlie Morris struck a doubtlessly major blow by doing away with Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent almost right now sooner than the shut of play on day three of the Bob Willis Trophy match in Bristol.
Having scored 67 so that you just can add to his first innings 92, Dent used to be over again frustrating Worcestershire’s hopes of engineering a worthwhile plight in the gap game of the season.
However Morris had him caught behind in the early evening and the hosts completed the day on 135-3, clean 26 runs behind with seven wickets in hand.
Gloucestershire clean contain an excellent deal of work sooner than them if they’re to set up the game and the unique ball, due after lunch on day four, could likely but demonstrate decisive.
Grand will depend on George Hankins, who will resume on 38 no longer out in the morning, in partnership with nightwatchman Josh Shaw, who’s but to attain.
Worcestershire had earlier added a extra 205 runs to reach 428-5 and put a first-innings lead of 161, Brett D’Oliveira top-scoring with 91 no longer out, Jack Haynes registering a maiden first-class fifty and Ben Cox weighing in with a whirlwind unbeaten 48 from 32 balls.

Yankees (22-18) at Rangers (18-24)

Thursday – 2:05pm on YES and MLBN: Domingo German (3-2, 3.62 ERA) vs Dane Dunning (2-3, 3.42 ERA)
A Brief Section on Globe Life Field
Tumblr media
This is the first time the Yankees will be playing at the new Rangers stadium, and it plays pretty differently than the previous park.
Now obviously Globe Life Field held the NL postseason and the World Series last year, but this is the first season where the Rangers have gotten to play in front of fans there. GLF’s dimensions are all honoring important Rangers players and moments:
Left Field Pole is 329 feet in honor of Adrian Beltre
Left Field inside the line is 334 feet in honor of Nolan Ryan
Left Field power alley is 372 feet as the Rangers first played in Texas in 1972
Deepest dimension is 410 feet in honor of Michael Young
Straightaway centerfield is 407 feet in honor of Pudge Rodriguez
Right Field power alley is 374 feet in honor of the 1974 Rangers having the first winning season ever
Right Field Pole is 326 feet in honor of Johnny Oates
42 feet from the plate to the backstop in honor of Jackie Robinson
Compared to the previous Rangers ballpark, the new Globe Life Field is a pitcher’s paradise: at the old Ballpark in Arlington, there were 19% more runs than average, 12% more home runs than average, and wOBA was 9% higher as well. It consistently ranked as one of the best hitter’s parks outside of Coors. In comparison, the new stadium is really tough for hitters: it was 11% worse than average in homers allowed last year (although its back to league average so far this year), 4% worse than average in runs allowed, and 2% worse than average in wOBA.
Rangers Injury Report
UTL Brock Holt: on the 10 Day IL with a strained hamstring, no timetable to return
SP Kohei Arihara: on the 10 Day IL with a finger contusion, no timetable to return
Rangers Pitching
Tumblr media
The Rangers rotation is kinda like the Island of Misfit Toys—it’s been high profile guys who have gotten dumped after poor performances or guys that have been passed around, but the Rangers are trying to take fliers on guys with some track record of success and then trade them for prospects. The big issue with that for Texas is when they have guys that DO actually perform well, they hold onto them for far too long and get limited returns instead (see: Lance Lynn and Mike Minor.) Rangers pitching as a whole has a 93 ERA+, which is really quite bad. While they are in the top 10 in walks allowed (3.02) they have allowed the most hits in baseball (362) and second most homers (54) and are below average in strikeouts. The bullpen is 17th in baseball with a 3.94 ERA as well, although the bullpen does have a couple nice bright spots in it.
Starting game one is right handed pitcher Jordan Lyles. Lyles is a four pitch pitcher—he’ll use his four seamer and curveball against righties and lefties, and mixes in a slider for righties and a change for lefties. His fastball, to be completely fair and honest, is garbage—it’s a 93mph fastball with okay movement, but it’s -9 run value makes it the second worst pitch in baseball this season (last year it was only the fourth worst pitch in all of baseball, so maybe there’s room for improvement?) He throws the fastball nearly 50% of the time, and opposing hitters are slugging .705 against it, which is just awful. It has a 64.7% hard hit rate. He’s allowed nearly as many extra base hits (10) as strikeouts (11) with it.
Tumblr media
That’s Lyles’ pitch percentages by zone for a fastball—notice 8.4% of those are meatballs and then another 25% of those are up and in against righties/up and away against lefties.
Tumblr media
Yeah, allowing over .600 batting averages on a third of your fastballs is a good way to end your Major League career.
Game two starter is Mike Foltynewicz, who in 2018 was an All Star for the Braves and got Cy Young votes for them as a 26 year old. Unfortunately for Folty, 2019 was a bad year and 2020 was a disaster- he lost 5mph off his fastball, lost a lot of weight, and was promptly DFA’d during the season. 2021 has been a bit better so far for him- his fastball is back up to 94mph, still slower than it was in his prime, but better than the high 80’s fastball he was rocking last year. His slider looks to be back in rhythm as well—opponents are hitting just .196 off his slider this year and he has 22 strikeouts in 46 at bats finishing guys off with it. Where Folty’s problems come from however are his awful platoon splits: righties are slashing .257/.292/.475 with five homers and 26 strikeouts in 101 at bats. Lefties are slashing .315/.386/.658 with six homers and 13 strikeouts in 73 at bats. His change up and curveball, both lefty only options, are getting destroyed.
Tumblr media
Folty has always been a stuff guy and more of a thrower than a pitcher, but when your stuff isn’t blowing guys away, you’re not really that valuable on the mound.
Lastly I wanted to give a shoutout to former Yankee prospect Ian Kennedy for putting up his best season in a decade as the Rangers closing pitcher. Kennedy was originally traded to the Diamondbacks as part of the Curtis Granderson trade in 2009, but he’s still alive and kicking out of the pen in Texas now. Ian’s basically gone from throwing four pitches as a starter to throwing his 4 seamer 80% of the time, which is probably a great decision: it’s only 94mph, but it has elite movement—an extra 2.1 inches of drop and an extra 2.6 inches of horizontal movement.
He’s just going to pound the strike zone with heaters and hope that you don’t rip him apart, but so far this season it’s been working really well.
Tumblr media
Rangers Hitters
Tumblr media
Texas’ lineup is starting to get back on track a bit after a brutal 2020 season. As a team they have a 100 wrc+, which is 10th in baseball, and are 8th in homers hit. They do have, in typical Rangers fashion, the fifth most strikeouts, but also in typical Rangers fashion they’re aggressive on the base paths—third in stolen bases (28) and 11th in extra base taken % (42%.)
While former Yankee prospect Nick Solak is doing really well, and the star of the team is the always fun Joey Gallo, the breakout star of the Rangers so far has been Adolis Garcia:
Tumblr media
Garcia has come from virtually nowhere to play an elite outfield and has just been crushing balls all over the park, but he does have an unsustainable .352 BABIP and 16% barrel rate. Is he going to stay good? My guess is yes, but I don’t think he’ll be a near MVP candidate the rest of the season.

But how do you know if they're giving you a fair price? When you make roofers compete, they'll often give you a better overall deal.

MLBits: MLB Rule Changes, Harper Tampering with Trout, Spin Rate Efficiency, Top 2020 Free Agents, More
I was late catching up to the news that MLB owners and players had come to an agreement on a couple of key rule changes, including increasing the active roster size from 25 to 26 starting in 2020. Check out the full details here.
But while I’m happy they’ve come together and have found common ground on a host of items, I think they’re still missing a bit. For example, they increased the minimum IL stay to 15 days for pitchers (who cares), will start extra innings of the All-Star Game with a runner on second base (puke), and players are giving MLB the right to shorten between-inning breaks – they haven’t committed to shortening between inning breaks, mind you, they’ll just have that right.
Left on the cutting room floor, then, is the three-batter minimums for relievers, which would’ve improved pace-of-play and the general pace and volume of offense/action, and the pitch clock, which … would’ve done the same. The former can still technically be unilaterally implemented by the commissioner and without input from the players in 2020, but he’s not going to do that. He’s threatened to use that power before, but pretty clearly wants the players on board first. The decision on a pitch clock, however, has been punted until 2021 – at least. It’s so obviously coming (it’s already in the Minors and Spring Training), but they keep putting it off at the big league level.
Of course, in 2-3 years, outspoken veterans like Jon Lester, Max Scherzer, etc. – i.e. the guys most likely to be against this sort of wholesale change – might be wrapping up their careers anyway. Maybe that’s MLB’s point.
Speaking of new rules: MLB has made some policy changes to Mexican League signings and it’s good news for teams and players, who had been temporarily blocked from coming to MLB. You can read about it here, but in short: Mexican League players used to be the stooges of a loophole that benefited their old team in Mexico (who would take upwards of 75% of every signing bonus) and their new team in MLB (who’s bonus pool was only depleted by the remaining 25% the player actually got). The new rules, however, will give the player rights to their full signing bonus (all of which will count against MLB bonus pools), while the Mexican League team will receive an additional 35% release fee that will *not* count against the pool. Voila!
Our main man Bryan’s got some thoughts on it:
Bryan’s right. While the Cubs were in IFA purgatory for previous spending sins, they took advantage of that Mexican League loophole quite a bit, so at least the relationships are in place. Though no loophole anymore:
Bryce Harper recently said “If you don’t think I’m gonna call Mike Trout to come to Philly in 2020, you’re crazy.” Which, well, potential rule-breaking aside … I’m just so jealous man. This is part of what you get when you get Harper. A hype man. An outspoken dude who draws attention – some positive, some not as much – to your favorite team. And I like attention. It’s fun. As for Trout, consider this: Trout is from Philadelphia, is a big Eagles fan, and has basically never been on a winning team, which the Phillies will likely now be over the next half-decade. Oh, and they still have plenty of money. They’re a real threat to have both Harper and Trout in a couple years. Watch out.
Now, with all of that said … the Angels did contact MLB about Harper’s comments, which could constitute tampering. It doesn’t feel as natural when the “tampering” is coming from a player’s mouth, not a manager/front office type, but it’s tampering all the same. Hell, we more or less know the Angels are trying to extend Trout as we speak – how do you think they feel?
Deadspin circled back to that brilliant piece of reporting from The Athletic regarding the details of Harper’s massive contract in Philadelphia, focusing in on one point: The Phillies preference for Harper over Machado for fan-related reasons. Basically, the Phillies front office actually considered Machado the better all-around player, but (in addition to Harper’s potential for uniquely HUGE offensive seasons) they knew their fans wanted Harper more (right or wrong). And when you’re going to make a $300M investment … it’s not a bad idea to make sure it’ll return some dough.
The Athletic has a story about Sonny Gray getting back on track with the Reds thanks to some of the modern world’s best tracking technology. I’ll let Gray explain it, himself: “I have a high spin rate four-seam, but a low spin efficiency four-seam because of my slot, and because I cut it a little bit,” Gray said about what he learned, apparently with a smile. “I never even knew that was a thing. I just learned that this offseason. What the f*** is that?”
[Brett: And this is an incredible story for two reasons: (1) the story of the way Gray worked with the Yankees (or didn’t) and how he could be a whole lot better in 2019 with the Reds; and (2) the concept of four-seam efficiency – i.e., not all high-spin four-seamers are created equally. Very worth a read. You will learn something.]
Indeed, that does seem to be a new bit of information to us outsiders, who may have otherwise not been privy to the difference between the EFFECTIVENESS of spin rates coming out of different slots. Noted.
Looks like Matt Wieters will win Cardinals back-up job:
Yankees starter Luis Severino, who just signed a 4-year/$40M extension, has been dealing with some right shoulder inflammation, which will keep him off the field for at least two weeks, putting the start of the season in doubt. Indeed, he was meant to be the Opening Day starter, but that’s highly unlikely to happen now. But considering the apparent short-term nature of the injury, I wouldn’t expect the Yankees to jump into the Dallas Keuchel sweepstakes. They’ll probably just handle it in-house, if I had to guess.
Heh – this is fun. Go, save baseball, my friend:
And this is just … something:
MLB Trade Rumors has released their early 2019-2020 MLB Free Agent power rankings, and the list is led by Xander Bogaerts, who’s expected to land a contract north of $200M with another great season. Depending on what happens with Javy Baez, Addison Russell, and, to a lesser extent, Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner, Bogaerts could be someone of interest to the Cubs. In any case, he’s followed by pitchers Chris Sale and Gerrit Cole, plus corner infielders Anthony Rendon and Paul Goldschmidt. Three Cubs, Anthony Rizzo, Jose Quintana, and Yu Darvish, would’ve been considered for the top-ten, but all three are expected to have their options exercised/opt-outs refused.

20 THOUGHTS: Shayna Jacked Up
VERY different year this for once, which is good
Usually we have a couple frontrunners out on top who almost make everyone from like third or fifth down redundant.
Not so this year. Top is clearly top, but not $1.50 with the bookies. The favourite has only just got into the top four, yet without its best defender. Third place is a wildcard at its best, and is there still something valuable out of fifth through seventh to come? Every chance.
All to play for.
  1.       Trent Dumont first up this week. Monday night on Channel Nine he spoke about his mental health battles. “Sometimes I still struggle to speak about it, but I was really flat. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
“I called off all 21st birthday celebrations and closed off myself to everyone in those times. I did think about potentially what it would be like if I wasn’t around anymore, would I be doing everyone a favour? I never put it into action, but I definitely had thoughts about potentially suicide.”
This issue ain’t going away, we had Majak last year and now we have just another typical 24-year-old talking about something that 200 Australians attempt every day. It ain’t going away.
 Keep talking.
 2.       Melbourne. Deplorable. Look at their close games. One point win to Gold Coast. Yes, a two point loss to Adelaide in the NT but two five point wins over Hawthorn and Carlton. Imagine if they were 2-16. So could have easily been. And it’s nothing to do with injuries. Aside from not being able to start numbers off the square anymore tactically, there’s no other real difference. Damming stat, St Kilda looked so much better than them on Saturday and were a year younger on average and a whole lot more inexperienced. Dees have to try and top up and go for it, otherwise, maybe like the Pies, it’s almost clean out start again time. Deplorable.
3.       Tom Lynch wasn’t a top 50 player in the comp for a while, maybe he might just prove that he is before year’s end. Certainly capable of being the best key forward in the game, no doubt.
4.       How bad was that Crows camp last summer? 2016 they went 16-6, 2017 they made the Grand Final after going 15-6-1, so it wasn’t a year out of the box. Last year 12-10, but 12th, and now 9-9 and just hanging on to 8th.
5.       Rumblings the Crows would part with Don Pyke. I can sort of get it. He clearly has, not so much lost the players, but good players are not playing well under him anymore. Rory Sloane doesn’t fear opposition coaches, nor does Taylor Walker, Eddie Betts is droppable, Brodie Smith was a weapon, now he is far less – you really get the sense, sadly for Pykey, that the chemistry between coach and optimising his talent has gone.
6.       Rhyce Shaw wins the North job. Good. But not great. The three wins he had from his first four that got him the job, Richmond when they lost three in a row without any fit players, Gold Coast, and Collingwood which looking back from where we are now – ‘so what’? Is he an upgrade on Scott, absolutely, is he the answer and gets North their fifth flag, almost certainly not. They did try and tempt Horse and Simo, to be fair.
7.       David Teague, if anything he is more compelling than Shaw. Why? What the players are doing for him. There is no more loved coach in the comp by his playing group than Teaguey. Could have easily won seven straight. I think with the talent on that list, and whatever momentum you call this, you almost need to give him first rights. Let him ‘caretaker’ into next year, so to speak.
8.       So Brad Scott then, well, some say he is a fool for going early. No dice. Leaving so soon into the year he got a bigger break from football than otherwise, plus, whilst he was positioning himself for a role in 2020 he ultimately appears to miss out on, the fall-back is that he gets his full payout from North which is over $700k. Laughing. Mind you, I reckon he’ll have a footy role next year anyway, not as a senior man, but think developmental or football department head of, something like that.
9.       Jake Niall made a great point about how the Tigers got their injury issues out of the way whereas the Pies’ timing is awful. Richmond is basically fully fit again outside of Rance, Collingwood’s just getting worse. In four weeks Richmond’s going to be unbackable for a second flag in three years, Collingwood needs to hope with some form and fitness it can be regain half a chance of winning an elimination final.
10.   Mind you, Pies yes, this is a bad spot and the injuries need review, but even though the current slide precedes a lack of player availability lets go back to the Giants game two weeks ago. When the Pies got it back to four goals, ‘had’ they gotten up and won, regardless of the Tigers result they’d still be second or third favourite for the flag. Small margins here. And whilst they were vastly different games, Richmond won last Friday by 32 points, the equivalent late-season blockbuster last year, Richmond won by 28 points. Don’t get me wrong, don’t jump on the Maggies, but let’s not forget, yesterday was still July, still a ways to go here folks.
11.   That said, Richmond still wins the flag for mine. We know the bit about beating Geelong first final to make a prelim, or somehow getting Geelong in a prelim going the other way. But, the only potential banana skin comes up if they were finish fourth, beat Geelong, get the week off straight into the prelim final. Meanwhile, West Coast beat Brisbane first week, the Lions get the double chance semi final at home. They would be play the winner of Essendon, Collingwood, who could get enormous belief by winning that elimination final and would fancy themselves then the next week. If the Bombers, for example, then topple the Lions they’d then get a date with Richmond in a prelim. The Tigers, playing one game in four weeks basically, are sitting ducks to a fellow big Melbourne club racing at them like, I don’t know, the Pies did last year. That elongated theory aside, Richmond’s home.
12.   Hawks are going to miss the finals, and they should not be. Losing to Brisbane in Tassie, alongside the failures to Melbourne in Round 7 and Saints in Round 4 will cost them eighth, where they’d be good enough to compete. Injuries, transitioning list, all that aside, this team has beaten Geelong, Collingwood, GWS and lost to the Eagles by a kick in a thunderstorm, they’re worthy. Or should be, anyway.
13.   Some swimming before the Ashes. How’s about the hot bed of mess that was. It does sound like there is something plausible about the suspect supplements that young Shayna has got herself in trouble with, but that’s neither here nor there, diligence doesn’t care for youthful slip ups. But the Swimming Australia leadership, namely Leigh Russell who was a mental health coach last time I checked, has failed here. Yes the anti-doping process is harsh, but you kind of feel Jack’s copped it worse off the back of it.
14.   And yes, Mack Horton makes his stance but then Jack gets done, bad look perhaps. But mind you, Horton was protesting Sun being there in the first place with a WADA appeal pending, at least with Jack once her results were declared she was sent home, it was a more cut and dry situation. I think we should be happy to still point fingers elsewhere providing we accept that we’re not immune whether you’re a systematic cheat or a blasphemous professional.
15.   Right, the cricket, only a couple hours away. Bancroft over Harris seems contentious but a couple reasons why they went with the Sandgroper sander. Being right-handed helped, if we went Harris six of the top five are all lefties, and that’s just too much. Especially too in an opening pair it is better to have left and right. But also there’s a fear on Harris outside of ‘Shield conditions’. He looked ok in the test summer, but didn’t blow anyone away. And if you’re a good batsman in Australian conditions against State bowlers, you can cash in. Bancroft has had a couple better moments, for Australia A but also for Australia, but too recently for Durham, where he has shown maybe his skills and toughness go up that extra level. That will be key against Anderson and Broad with Duke balls in English conditions.
16.   Jimmy Pattinson, what a story. He had a back like Stephen Hawking only five minutes ago and now he is bustling and breathing fire with Duke in hand and will definitely get some LBW’s. Remember, last summer at home, six tests, not one quickie got a leg before. Pattinson is going to be beating the bat and hitting lots of pads and lots of poles, no question. Castles should go a-flying. Great story.
17.   Now, Pete Siddle, he is the other one, might even get a go too tonight. Why? Well the answer lies with Tim Murtagh. Who? He is the ‘not-quick’ Irish seamer who took five for bugger all at Lords last week in the first innings against England. Bowls a very tidy, tight, nagging length and gets a little wobble off the seam, which on our decks gets you smacked, but in England with some cloud cover you’re unplayable. If 38-year-old Murtagh can get Michelle Pfeiffer’s at Lord’s, imagine what Siddle might be able to do somewhere. Will play.
18.   England’s top order is the key. We said in the World Cup the lower order was their Achilles heel and early on it was, but back end of the tournament Roy and Bairstow got going and they deservedly won the World Cup. Ashes, red ball, it’s the opposite. The top order is their weakness which is not where you’d want it. At least in one-day cricket when Roy and Bairstow get going they protect the middle order, in test cricket it’s going to go wrong from the start. Joe Root does not want to bat three, at all, not one bit – but such is their issues at the top he is. He will probably still bat well, but if doesn’t, they could be four for not much and that is a problem they can’t afford too often needing to win something like three of the five tests.
19.   Predictions? Nah dunno, I know that because it’s later in their summer, in fact I think two tests will be in their autumn maybe, there is every chance we draw a test due to rain interruptions. So the Poms will need a 3-1 result to get the urn back, or 2-1 if we lose two tests to weather. I reckon Australia wins at least one test, and if the batting is ok at worst, good at least, then that’s probably two wins and the urn is retained. But India nobbled our batting at home, it’s now Anderson and Broad and over there. Might come down to Warner and Smith, they go ok, we win, they miss and the batting still is a problem, we don’t, England does the World Cup-Ashes double.
20.   Lastly, A-League got some good news, Channel Ten will air two games a round this year on the main channel, which is a great result in all honesty. However, kind of trumped later in the week when the NBL announced its SBS-ESPN deal, which sees every afternoon game on SBS (three plus games a round), and all primetime games on ESPN, away from the Fox Sports channels. That would not be cheap, big leap of faith by ESPN. Larry Kestelman runs that sport as well as the FFA tries to bury its sport into the ground.

Third umpire
Tammy Beaumont paddles Yadav for one, scampers back for the second which would level the scores… and they’re going upstairs as her full-length dive looks a fraction short…
18.2 overs
Eng 121-5
Wilson drills Yadav back past the non-striker, it’s going towards the boundary… but there’s a fielder there. A single means it’s three to win off 10.
18.1 overs
Eng 120-5
Radha Yadav to bowl. Wilson on strike. She steps waaaaay outside off stump and paddles Yadav for two over her left shoulder. Four to win.
18 overs
Tammy Beaumont knows this ground well, having played here for Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League – and she’s off the mark straight away with a two, flicked to fine leg. An attempted ramp doesn’t come off as the ball spoons towards short third man, but the ever-alert Fran Wilson hustles through for a leg bye, before nicking the strike with a single off the last ball.
England have made heavy weather of this run chase, but they need six to win. 12 balls left.
17.3 overs

WICKET
Sciver c&b Gayakwad 50 (Eng 114-5)
No sooner has the applause for her fifty died down, Natalie Sciver gives Gayakwad a return catch for her third wicket.

50 for Nat Sciver
Eng 114-4
If you’re just waking up in the UK, then cross your fingers, you could be about to hear an England victory. Natalie Sciver and Fran Wilson are knocking off the required runs without too much alarm – and Sciver brings up her half-century with a flat six over long-on. England need 10 to win.

Mid-wicket is sitting on the ring – when you’ve got a sweeper behind you, you;ve got to push in a couple of yards to cut off the single.
17 overs
Eng 107-4
Sciver 44 (36 balls), WIlson 15 (18)
Sciver goes for the ramp, India appeal for the catch behind, the umpire Claire Polosak shakes her head. Replays are inconclusive. But when Sciver does connect with the ramp, this time there’s enough on it to race away to the unguarded fine leg boundary on the second or third bounce.
England have 18 balls to score 17 runs. They should not need all 18 deliveries.
16 overs
Fran Wilson knows she’s the support act in this situation, wisely rotating the strike as Deepti Sharma begins her last over. But India have been pretty lively in the field, restricting England to singles where they might have taken twos – although a fast outfield may also be a factor. And having patiently supported Sciver, Wilson sweeps and picks up her first boundary to push England’s score past 100.
The requirement is down to less than a run a ball – 23 from 24.

It’s just all a little too easy at the minute. Your cover and mid-wicket need to be your most agile fielders.
15 overs
Eng 91-4
Sciver 37, Wilson 6
If Heather Knight’s dfismissal had given India hope, Natalie Sciver has swung the pendulum back towards England. Although a reverse sweep goes straight to a fielder, a bloodthirsty whack through the covers brings her fifth four of the day. Left-arm spinner Yadav also serves up a loopy full toss, but Sciver can’t connect cleanly with a pull stroke and it’s straight to the mid-wicket sweeper for one. England need 33 from 30 deliveries.
14 overs
India shuffle their bowlers – they were a few runs ahead of England at this point in their innings, but this was where England started to put the squeeze on. Sciver whips Pandey off her legs for another four, and a single takes her to 31 from 26 balls. Can she see England home from here? They need 41 from 36.
13 overs
Eng 77-4
Sciver 26, Wilson 4
England find the boundary for the first time since the seventh over as Natalie Sciver powerfully guides Harmanpreet Kaur’s part-time spin for four through the covers. Kaur is pretty much telegraphing how wide outside off stump she’s going to bowl – keeper Taniya Bhatia is standing almost where first slip would be for an orthodox spinner – but Sciver and Wilson take nine from the over.
England need 47 from 42 balls.
12 overs
Fran Wilson is the new batter, she made an unbeaten 39 from 28 balls last time out. She’s off the mark with a single, while Nat Sciver tickles a two to the vacant fine leg area.
She has 20 from 20 balls – England’s task has risen to 56 from 48 balls – but they have plenty of batting to come. Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Winfield, who were England’s World Cup-winning openers in 2017, are set to bat at seven and eight.

That was another good catch, diving forward. You don’t always associate good fielding with this India team but that was excellent. It’s a huge wicket and this is the moment for this India group to get together and ask how can we get one or two more wickets and put pressure on this chase.
11.1 overs
wicket
WICKET
Knight c Yadav b Gayakwad 18 (Eng 65-4)
Great catch! India, desperately searching for a wicket, turn back to Gayakwad’s left-arm spin and it bears immediate fruit as Heather Knight slices a catch to backward point where Radha Yadav dives forward to hold on with both hands.
Game on?
11 overs
A delicate lap-scoop over short fine leg brings Knight a two as Deepti Sharma returns to the attack. England are rather short of boundaries at the moment – picking out the long-on fielder a couple of times for singles – but they’re still going along nicely.
10 overs
Eng 60-3
Sciver 17 (18 balls), Knight 14 (14)
India turn back to the pace of Shikha Pandey, the headband-wearing Indian Air Force officer and brisk right-arm seamer. Knight gets an edge as she tries to force the ball through the leg side, but there’s a fielder to cut it off at third man.
Nat Sciver looks like she’s not happy with the grip of her bat, adjusting it between deliveries, but she and her captain are bustling along at a run a ball.
We’re at the halfway stage of the innings – and I’ll go out on a limb by saying that if India don’t take at least two wickets, they’re not going to win from here.
9 overs
Time for some part-time off-spin as Harmanpreet Kaur tries to dislodge fellow captain Heather Knight. Kaur, inscrutable behind her sunglasses, is bowling in a cap, but England are happy to play risk-free cricket and chip away at their target.
Six singles from the over, zero risks taken – and England will be more than happy to shuffle along in this manner. This partnership have doubled the score, having come together at 28-3.
8 overs
Eng 50-3
Sciver 12, Knight 9
Reddy tries to slip another wide one through, Sciver swishes at thin air again, but this time the umpire signals a wide. Sciver drills one to long-on, Knight keeps the cover sweeper busy, that’s 50 up, and finally England are ahead of where India were at this stage (48-1).
