-----
Lucifer hoisted up his backpack, his eye twitching slightly. He stood in his human form as he looked up at the concrete gates of the school before him, watching parents and children milling around the entrance. He looked very much like a model student, standing there in a pair of newly polished shoes with white socks, a pair pressed black shorts; on his chest was a button down black jacket, over the top of a red dress shirt. The only contrasting feature to his youthful appearance was the dark bags were under his eyes, contrasting slightly with his pinkish skin. “That Levi…” His hand shook slightly as he scrunched it up into a small little fist.
He honestly didn’t know why others complained about Berith’s temper; Berith was simple. He liked Berith because he was predictable. Berith would explode in a fit of rage, causing brimstone to rain down from the skies; occasionally a few places would get destroyed bit that was it. That was his temper. Anger, fire and brimstone, destruction then that it - his temper would be gone. Dusted and done. Usually over in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Leviathan’s temper on the other hand was like like… some sort of incurable disease. It was like if you come down with some sort of incurable sickness, but no matter what you did or how you treat it, it’s still there, festering away. Leviathan would sit there and fume not just for days or weeks, but sometimes months or years. And he was never quiet about his displeasure either.
He honestly sounded like some mortal nagging mother, yelling into the night, non stop.
And for whatever damnation of a reason he decided to use Lucifer’s chambers for his yelling fit.
And what was the source of his anger?
Mostly Astaroth. Of course.
For some unholy, unknown reason, she had entered into a duel against the former Archangel, Gabriel, who, turns out, had become a Cherub. Despite knowing their differences in power and that she couldn’t use her powers as a Fallen, she persisted with the battle anyway and didn’t even think to try and make an escape.
Thankfully Asmodeus had been there and caught onto the situation quickly enough, he had managed to destroy the barrier and teleport them both out of the Primum Mobile, back to the safety of Hell.
Yet due to this Barrier, neither Lucifer or Leviathan could work out what was happening up in the Heavens. After losing contact with the pair of them, Leviathan naturally was beside himself with worry. When the pair returned, of course he was relieved… until Astaroth made some snide comment about ‘beating the damn Cherub flat on his tail’.
That’s when the truth came out.
And the quiet night of Hell ended.
Lucifer gritted his teeth and slapped his hand on the wall in frustration. He was disappointed with Astaroth, but also annoyed at Leviathan.
And now, when he needed that stupid General to carry out duties as a mortal, the fucking arsehole was no where to be seen. ‘Leviathan! Get your arse here, immediately!’
“Luce?” Lucifer looked up at the sound of the voice, looking up at Thomas as he tilted his head, looking at him in curiosity. “Did you get into a fight?”
Alice smiled and quickly kissed Thomas on the cheek, “Have a good day, sweetie!”, she quickly farewelled him before she got back into her car.
“Bye mum!”
Lucifer looked down and sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. “No, I’m just tired. I didn’t get much sleep.”
Thomas glanced upwards in thought then leaned against the concrete wall, “I thought you only slept because I slept.”
Lucifer paused for a moment in consideration; that’s right. He was a Fallen second and a Seraph first. Seraph and other angels were blessed with the ability to function without sleep for multiple days and night.
Why was he so tired?
“Sire, I’m so sorry.” His thoughts were interrupted as Leviathan ran up, slightly out of breath.
“I thought I told you to be here by 8am. It’s now 8.30. Oliver said that I needed you to sign me in at the Faculty Office for this ridiculous school.”
Heat flushed against Thomas’ cheeks, “Uh, you don’t have to force yourself.” He mumbled quietly, “I’m OK. Really.”
Lucifer froze, feeling a sharp pain in his chest. He stepped forward and placed his hand on Thomas’ head, “Sorry, kiddo. I didn’t mean that.” Thomas looked up with a half smile and Lucifer scratched at his head, trying to think of what to say, “Did you want to walk with me?”
“Sure!”
 ---
“Everyone, I’d like to introduce a new person to our class.” The teacher walked across the room, turning her head to look out amongst the students. Her grey eyes surveyed them as she brushed her brown and grey streaks hair back into it’s frizzy bun. Her had a soft smile on her face, with wrinkle lines across her features. “Class, please welcome Lucifer Judecca.”
A few of the children gasped at the name, muttering amongst themselves.
“What kind of name is that?”
“Isn’t Lucifer the name of the Devil?”
“Why is he called that?”
Lucifer walked across the front of the room and stood, turning as he looked round. His golden eyes lazily gazed around the room, and he focused on a blue-eyed boy with blonde hair. A flicker of resentment passed over his eyes as he recognised the boy as one of Thomas’ tormentors.
“Luce? Luce? Did you want to introduce yourself?”
He pulled himself out of his thoughts, frowning at the interruption, “My name is Lucifer, but you can call me Luce. I moved here just after Christmas with my Father and will be staying here for awhile.” The whispering in the room continued and his eyes narrowed, “Keep talking and you’ll realise that it’s more than a name.”
At that, a hushed silence covered the room and all the children went quiet.
The teacher clapped her hands together and awkwardly laughed, “What a funny joke, Luce! Now, come, come. You can sit over here next to Thomas.”
Lucifer walked past the teacher, dropping is bag on the back of the chair and took a seat. A few kids peered over at him, but he glared back, causing them to look away.
This really was going to be bothersome.
Thomas rested his cheek against the wooden surface of the table, smiling and whispered, “Hey.”
“Hey.” A smile fell across his face easily. Something about this child always made him feel at ease, “Are they always like that?” He inclined his head towards the back of the room.
Thomas gave an embarrassed laugh, “Yeah, kinda. They’re not bad though.”
“Hmmm.” Lucifer crossed his arms, looking up as the teacher started roll call. He gazed about the room, taking note of each child and their names. He took note of the blonde-hair, blue eyed boy when his name was called. Ajax Foster. He’d remember that.
Shortly after attendance was taken, the teacher left the room, instructing the students to behave until the next teacher came along. The moment she left the room though, several kids swarmed Lucifer’s desk.
“Hey! Is your name really Lucifer?”
“Why did your parents name you that?”
“What school did you come from?”
“Your eyes are pretty! I’ve never seen gold eyes before!”
“Did your mum let you dye your hair? I wish my mum would let me dye my hair!”
Lucifer eyes narrowed and flashed red, “Leave me.” He ordered. At once, the children’s eyes went blank and they returned to their seats.
‘You shouldn’t do that.’ Lucifer turned and looked at Thomas, almost replying before he realised that Thomas hadn’t actually spoken. He had simply broadcast his thoughts. Lucifer rested his arm on the table and cupped his chin in his palm. Glancing over at Thomas desk, his eyes narrowed when he noticed that there were several hateful words drawn onto the desk and that it was more battered compared to the other students. He opened his mouth to ask what had happened, but was interrupted by a voice.
“Oi. Mas Tom. I thought they would have kicked a retard like you out.” It was Ajax, he stood behind Thomas’ chair with a sneer on his face. “I’m surprised you had the balls to come back.”
Thomas closed his eyes and pulled his jacket over his head, “Please leave me alone, Ajax.” He whispered.
The boy’s blue eyes narrowed and he kicked the leg of the chair, causing Thomas to fall off, “Oi. I thought I told you to call me ‘Sir’ you little runt.”
Lucifer stood up, clenching his fist. It took all of his focus to not set the blonde-haired human on fire. Surely this is something those annoying mortals would sort out. He looked around, half expecting the rest of the class to do something, but the children were all looking in opposite directions, purposely avoiding eye contact.
What the fuck?
Why didn’t they do anything?
He went to take a step forward, but Thomas quickly pulled himself to his feet, brushing himself off, “Ah, I think there is something wrong with my chair. I just fell off.” He gave a quick smile, wincing slightly. Lucifer’s eyes widened slightly as he saw a graze on Thomas’ knee and another on his palm.
“Hey-” He raised his hand, but Thomas reached out and grabbed it with his non injured hand.
“Um, I need to go to the nurses’ office, but I’ll show you where it is, seeing as you haven’t been here before. Let’s go, Luce!” He quickly walked out of the room and Lucifer was dragged along in shock.
It made no sense.
Why was Thomas retreating?
Why didn’t he take retribution?
And why didn’t anyone in class react?
He was injured!
That kid did that. He knocked the chair over and caused him to be injured.
That kid needed to be punished.
‘Please don’t do anything. Please don’t do anything.’ He could hear Thomas’ voice in his mind, chanting over and over as the grip on his hand tightened.
A slight sound of rumbling echoed in his chest as he looked at Thomas’ other hand. It was clenched tightly but blood was dripping from it, he made an annoyed sound in his throat, restraining the profanities that threatened to emerge then muttered, “Sure.”
He followed after Thomas and looked back at where Ajax was smirking.
A flash of heat passed through his chest upon seeing that smirk.
He would make that child pay.
Once they were out of the classroom, and the door closed, Lucifer pulled his hand back frustrated, “How come you let him get away with it?!”
Thomas looked down at the ground and started walking away, he held his injured hand with the over, cradling it to his chest and whispered, “Because I have to.”
“Why?! He did something wrong. He deserves to be punished.” Lucifer walked after him, growling. He didn’t like this.
Not at all.
Where was the happy child that he had seen these past two weeks?
The kid was like a shell of his former self.
“Luce, we can’t do that here. If I tell the teacher, he will just get worse.” Thomas’ footsteps quickened as he walked down the hallway.
He looked over at Thomas and noticed dark flecks forming on the boy’s golden soul. It seemed as if the child was battling against his inner emotions. A dark patch would flare up before being swallowed back under the colour gold.
His soul was still gold at least, but how long could he last like this?
He truly was fighting his own demons. And all on his own. He was just a normal kid after all. Lucifer gritted his teeth, the moment a human soul turned black, that was it.
Heaven would never accept a tainted soul, ever. It would simply be thrown into the Nine Circles of Hell, and even Lucifer with his title of Satan cannot overturn a human’s fate if it came to that.
“I don’t understand.” Lucifer sighed, exasperated, jogging slightly to keep up with him. “If you stand up to him, he will stop.”
“It doesn’t work like that.”
“Why not?!”
“I’m not strong enough.”
Lucifer reached out, grabbed Thomas shoulder and spun him around, pushing him against the wall. “You have me.”
“But-” Thomas averted his gaze, staring down at his shoes.
“Thomas. You wrote that letter to me. You may have meant it to go to that Nick, but it came to me. I took on that responsibility. That is mine? Do you hear? I’m the one that agreed to be your friend. Not Nick, your ‘Santa’, not those sorry pieces of shit in your class. Me.” Lucifer’s hand shook slightly, he couldn’t understand what he felt.
It was like anger, but there was another emotion underneath it. It made him feel shaky, uneasy, like he was in pain. But he wasn’t.
What was this emotion?
He took a step forward and grasped Thomas’ chin, forcing him to look into his eyes. “Look, I don’t know what friendship means for humans, we don’t exactly have it where I am from, and I want to find out more about it. I suspect it’s similar to the unwavering loyalty that I have from my Generals, but there is something more. I know there is. Let me be your friend.”
A sob came from Thomas and he sniffled as a tear rolled down his cheek. “-ay.”
“What?”
“Okay.” Thomas whispered and started sobbing before he reached forward and wrapped his arms around Lucifer’s neck. The moment he held on, he started to wail, crying uncontrollably.
Lucifer awkwardly wrapped one arm around the boy and patted his head, legitimately having no idea how to handle the situation. It reminded him of the time when Astaroth had been cast out. She too had wept like this, and even then Lucifer didn’t know how to react. He simply accepted her, for who she was.
Despite being weak, this boy was the same.
He doubt he could change this crying child to have the will and strength of a Fallen, but he could accept him for who he was, and help him grow.
He could feel several emotions floating through him from Thomas, relief, thankfulness, frustration, happiness, sadness. Lucifer tightened his grip slightly and placed a kiss on the boys forehead.
It was a strange sensation with the way the emotions they blended together, mixing with one another.
Yes, he would accept Thomas for who he was.
But that didn’t mean that Lucifer had to accept the others for who they were.
