sooo i finally finished sonic unleashed. the main story parts, anyway. there's still a bunch of act 2 and act 3 stages i still have to do but from what i've seen, they're way shorter than their act 1 counterparts so it's fine. some junk thoughts below about this game!
now that i finally have a ps3 i'v been catching up on a bunch of games i missed out on when i only had the wii :y when i first started playing this game i was like wow, this isn't really that bad compared to what i had been hearing online about it! sure the werehog portions were kind of tedious sometimes, and the fact that they're twice or three times as long as the daylight sections isn't great, but i mean sonic adventure 2's eggman stages sure were slower and more tedious than the sonic/shadow stages, so i was like eh sure, fine, whatever. some of the later werehog stages were a pain and fighting the same type of enemies over and over was really starting to get on my nerves, but again, is this any different than the slow stages of eggman/tails in sa2? if i was able to A-rank all of their missions, then getting through the werehog stages isn't the worst. some of the platforming sections were actually entertaining but yeah, the fighting? not so much.
the daylight stages are hella fun to play through, although i don't know if it's the ps3 version but they seemed very ummm glitchy at parts, and the frame rate would slow waaaay down in certain portions of stages too. it obviously isn't as smooth as i would have wanted, but that was kind of my experience playing through sonic generations. i'm playing with a fat ps3 so i don't know if the experience is better in the slim version lol, but yeah, i'd love to come back to it eventually and try to S rank the stages since they're so fast-paced and just a blast to do. i don't think i'll ever bother getting all of the medals and 100% completing it since this game is just PACKED with content. on top of getting the medals, S-ranking, and the sidequests you get in the hub world, apparently there's hot dog missions too?? oh and there's DLC on top of that. so yeah, i'm ok with not 100% this like i did with sa2 or colors or generations lol. teenage me would have loved to do it though.
sonic games might not be your cup of tea but the music never disappoints. i had heard the unleashed OST way before ever playing the game and man, it was so good to finally hear the music along with the game. while i was out trying to collect enough medals to unlock the stages i don't know why but hearing the apotos night theme made me get all sentimental and nostalgic lol even though i didn't even grow up with this game at all. idk i guess it's just something about sonic games and their music that always hits home.
i know in my last post i was extremely pissed off at the last stage in unleashed and i said it brought the game down to a 5/10, but maybe i was a bit harsh lol. like i still think that level is atrocious EVEN FOR a last level, which you always know it's going to be a harder-than-usual level. but seriously that level design was just ridiculously long and stupid in every shape or form--the part that pissed me off the most was when you have to walk on these pipes as a werehog and in some parts you have to jump, but when you jump sometimes the fucking camera changes directions so because you're tilting the control stick a certain way, that would cause you to fall off the pipe and die. seriously, i don't think i've ever played a last stage in a sonic game that was as bad as eggmanland, so it's always interesting to see the comments on the youtubes defending the stage and how it's actually a great level. like ok sure lol.
i still say that the game forcing you to collect a ridiculous amount of medals to unlock stages was just not necessary. i thought i was doing a pretty good job at collecting them but i still had to look up guides to unlock the stages from chuu-nan onwards. like, just let me play the stages and get through the story, maybe make the act 2 and act 3 harder to unlock that way but not the main ones!
i actually have the wii version of unleashed that i had bought waaay back when but i never bothered to finish it once i learned that the stages are like watered down versions of the ps3/xbox360 ones, so i'm glad i waited to play it how it was meant to be played. the wii one also doesn't have the hub worlds i don't think, which i mean the hub worlds are actually pretty bad and add nothing to it gameplay wise: they will never be station square or mystic ruins. the way the camera moves around them is actually pretty bad and would make me feel dizzy at times lol. but still, i'm glad they exist because otherwise, we would have never gotten the absolutely gorgeous music that the night stages have (spagonia night theme is absolutely lovely and holoska night is the perfect listen for winter time).
overall, i'm glad i finally got a chance to play unleashed and see how this was the start of the sonic team getting the 3D sonic formula right (minus that terrible drifting mechanism, sorry!). generations is still one of my ultimate faves and frontiers brought back the sonic fever in me, so i'm excited to catch up on the rest of the 3d sonic games i missed out due to me being either a poor college student or poor fresh out of college lol. i'm thinking about buying sonic boom next, it looks very platform-y from the gameplay i've seen of it, so yeah! full on sonic mode and loving it!!

My Sonic Game OST Ranking From Worst to Best
Greetings, mortals! Today, I'll be ranking every Sonic game soundtrack I've heard from worst to best.
Please keep in mind, this is MY OPINION! You don't need to agree with it, but please don't complain in the comments section if you disagree with this list.
Anyway, let us begin! ^^
21. Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis GBA (2006)
Behold... The worst Sonic OST ever made from the absolute worst Sonic game ever made! Not only is this game's music some of the most EAR-BLEEDING I've ever heard, but it also horribly butchers Sonic 1's iconic soundtrack by poorly remixing music from the original game. Star Light Zone's music track is decent, but the rest of the music tracks sound like bad MIDI music, with the wrong instruments playing, and the instruments that are playing are muffled. For example, the drums in the extra life sound effect sound like muffled bongos instead of real marching band-style drums like in the original game. The music in general sounds like something you would hear from an old Java mobile phone game from the 2000's. It literally makes the soundtrack in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood sound like MASTERPIECES in comparison. Sonic Genesis GBA is hands down, the worst thing to come from Sonic's 15th anniversary, and this godawful soundtrack is one of the many, many reasons why.
20. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (2014)
This game's soundtrack is so slow, boring and unimpressive, it hurts. The other two Boom games are not worth mentioning, as their OST's are basically just more of the same.
19. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (2008)
One of the most widely criticized aspects of Chronicles, the entirety of this soundtrack consists of either beeps or a bland melody.
18. Sonic 4 Duology (2010-2012)
Very forgettable. Splash Hill Zone's music is the only part of this OST that I actually remember. The rest are just loud, obnoxious and heavily synthesized tracks that sound like they're trying way too hard to emulate the music tracks from the Genesis games without understanding what made those music tracks great in the first place.
17. Sonic Lost World (2013)
This game's music sounds like it belongs in a Mario game, which is actually fitting, considering that Lost World is basically a Mario game that happened to have Sonic in it.
16. Sonic Forces (2017)
Some decent tracks, but mostly forgettable. Infinite's theme is definitely the best song in the entire Forces soundtrack in my opinion. Sure, Fist Bump has its fans, but I never particularly cared for it personally.
15. Sonic Generations (2011)
It's just remixes of songs from previous games. Nothing new. I mean, they're good remixes (the City Escape remix is one of the best in my opinion), but still.
14. Team Sonic Racing (2019)
Like Generations, this game's OST mainly consists of song remixes, at least from what I've heard. The only original song (as far as I know) is the opening theme, Green Light Ride, which is the first thing we've gotten from Crush 40 in a while.
13. Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007)
It may be kind of forgettable compared to the other Dark Era OST's, but it is pretty decent in my opinion. Seven Rings in Hand and Worth a Chance are both good songs.
12. Sonic Colors (2010)
Out of all the Meta Era soundtracks, Colors is definitely the best of them, besides Mania. Reach For the Stars in particular is a great song, and while I didn't find the original version of Speak With Your Heart to be all that memorable, the Sonic Symphony rendition of it however, fucking slaps.
11. Sonic Mania (2017)
I liked it. The remixed level tracks were pretty good, and the new level tracks were pretty good as well, especially Studiopolis Zone Act 1.
10. Sonic CD (1993)
This game's OST is full of catchy tunes. The two that stand out to me in particular are the opening themes, Sonic Boom (US) and You Can Do Anything (JP/EU).
9. Classic Trilogy: Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) and Sonic 3 and Knuckles (1994)
I'm going to group the entire Classic trilogy together because they all have equally great soundtracks. Green Hill Zone's music is iconic, Emerald Hill Zone's music is iconic as well, and Spring Yard Zone, Metropolis Zone, Hydro City Zone and Flying Battery Zone are all very catchy and memorable. There's probably more, but I'll just stick with the highlights for now.
8. Sonic Adventure 2 (2001)
It offers up a nice variety of music genres, including rock, which is par for the course in the Sonic franchise, as well as rap songs for Knuckles and jazz music for Rouge. Some memorable vocal tracks include renditions of It Doesn't Matter and Believe In Myself, E.G.G.M.A.N., Throw It All Away, Fly in the Freedom and of course, Live and Learn.
7. Tie: Sonic Riders Trilogy (2006-2010) and Sonic Rush Duology (2005-2007)
They're all great, but Zero Gravity's soundtrack is definitely the best of them in my opinion. The first Riders game's OST is pretty good as well, and as bad as Free Riders is, its opening theme is a good song and the only redeeming quality of that game.
As for the Sonic Rush duology, they both have great soundtracks, but the first game's OST is definitely the best in my opinion. Even for the series' high quality of music, the soundtrack for Sonic Rush is phenomenal. It's mainly done by Hideki Naganuma, who also did the soundtrack for Jet Set Radio, and he fits right at home with this series' type of music, creating one of the greatest Sonic soundtracks of all time. Furthermore, both Sonic and Blaze get their own music. Each zone has a unique version of the zone song exclusive to each character, and they're all a blast to listen to. And its sequel, Sonic Rush Adventure, has a great soundtrack as well, with the main theme, A New Venture, being particularly memorable.
6. Sonic Adventure (1998)
Plenty of great and memorable tracks, including It Doesn't Matter, Believe In Myself, Tikal's theme, E-102 Gamma's theme, Emerald Coast's music, Windy Valley's music, Speed Highway's music, and my personal favorite, Open Your Heart.
5. Sonic Unleashed (2008)
Just the song Endless Possibility alone puts this soundtrack in my top five. Rooftop Run's music is very memorable to me as well.
4. Sonic and the Black Knight (2009)
It has plenty of great tracks that fit with the game's medieval theme. Knight of the Wind is definitely my favorite song in the entire game.
3. Sonic Heroes (2003)
This game's soundtrack is near perfect in my opinion. Sonic Heroes (the opening theme), We Can and Follow Me are pretty good, but This Machine, Team Chaotix and What I'm Made Of absolutely take the cake.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Sonic 06 is still a divisive game to this day, but we can all agree that its soundtrack is one of the best in the franchise. From amazing vocal tracks like His World, All Hail Shadow and Dreams of An Absolution, to great and memorable level themes like Crisis City, it's no surprise that I consider the 06 soundtrack to be my second favorite in the entire series.
1. Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)
I love ShTH's soundtrack for a multitude of reasons, one of them being just how absolutely brilliant the vocal songwriters were. The lyrics without fail always fit the theme they're going for. I Am... (All Of Me) is a great vocal track and my absolute favorite in the entire series. As a fan of rock/metal music in general, this game's OST definitely fits my style. I personally consider it to be the number one best Sonic game soundtrack.
Thanks for reading! I hope you guys enjoyed this list and I'll see you next time!! ^^
