Only a southern would have come up with the true and right idea that the Riverland are just Appalachia. Ned and cats sham of a wedding (at the start! Marrying for an army etc) is thematically coherent to all those brother going to the train station with shotguns to make sure the new brother in law made it to the chapel on time (what my great uncles did to my great grandfather when he got my greatgrandma pregnant)

the riverlands are this sprawling yet isolated liminal space where everything happens yet nothing ever seems to really change or move forward in time, 80 year old interpersonal grudges may as well be from yesterday, everyone is obsessed with following and/or breaking a complex unspoken set of social rules revolving around putting on a good face and treating guests right, people deride it and yet once they’re there can never seem to truly leave or stop themselves from being drawn back in, and where a core pillar of society is Going Down To The River and i’m supposed to NOT recognize it as the South??? it is to ME
