The great thing about not having time to sit down and write is that you can brainstorm lots of story details in the spare moments of the day no matter where you are.

The bad thing about this strategy is that when you do have time to sit down and write, you have lots of well-developed story ideas competing for your attention, and you like them all best for different reasons, and there's no way to choose which one to write first.

#adventures in writing #this problem is magnified when you write retellings because those develop very quickly #and all have strong vibes built-in from the source material #so you get a full and appealing picture almost immediately #so it feels like 'oh yes i could totally write this in five minutes'#and then you can't #and it turns out that half of the ideas you like too much to even try writing quickly #because you're so attached to the details you've developed you don't want to wreck it #and it's been long enough since the original brainstorm that you've forgotten the concrete scenes that fit in those details #so then you try to brainstorm a quicker and easier story you're less attached to #and the problem just gets worse
