You know that he will give them everything until there is nothing left of him but the imprint of dust where his feet once trod. (X)

Dolores x reader
Summary(?): Basically Dolores being in love with Mariano while she was with you
*Not proof read
____________________________________________
Dolores watched as Mariano walked past, with Isabela's hand in his own. Isabela didn't look too happy, and neither did Dolores. She wondered how it would feel to hold his hand, or how fast her heart would beat if he'd ever look at her the way he does with Isabela. She'd listen to the songs he'd sing to Isabela, often imagining he was singing them to her instead.
And then you came along. You were just like Mariano, viewed as the perfect person because of your kindness and attractiveness. You met her through Isabela, giving her the occasional winks or flirts. Dolores would let you, often flirting back. She thought she'd finally be happy without Mariano the moment you mustered up your courage and asked her out.
Don't get me wrong, she was definitely happy with you at first, but as months passed by, she'd slowly start thinking about him again. Mariano would still be in her dreams, and every poem would remind her of him.
You knew ofcourse, and you were pretty sure the whole village knew about Dolores' having feelings for Mariano. You saw how she would look longingly at him, or how unhappy she'd become if she sees Mariano and Isabela together. You tried not to care, you'd remind yourself that she was with you and not him. But your jealousy slowly got the best of you.
Why wouldn't she look at you the way she did with Mariano?
You'd try to ignore the looks of pity the villagers would give you if you would walk with Dolores. Heck, even the rest of the Madrigals would look at you sadly everytime you'd go to casita to fetch Dolores for a date.
Now, Dolores was okay with public affection, as long as it wasn't anything too inappropriate. The occasional quick kisses or long hugs were fine, but as time went on, the most she'd do with you was to only hold your hand.
You tried not to care, you tried your best to be optimistic and understanding, ignoring the way your heart would ache or how your eyes would water at the thought of her falling out of love with you.
Was she even in love with you in the first place? Or were you just a distraction? You weren't sure.
The last straw was when she called you Mariano by accident. Sure, accidentally calling someone by another name was no big deal right?
Well, not if it kept happening.
"Maria- y/n, could you please help me?"
"Your voice is too loud Mar- y/n"
"Mari- y/n, do you want to walk with me?"
"I love you, Marian- y/n"
Now that, was the last straw. You didn't even bother looking at her as you stormed out of her room, ignoring her pleads and cries. You ignored every Madrigal as you went straight out the door.
The Madrigals were confused, you and Dolores never fought. They went and asked her about what happened, ready to pay you a visit if it you were the reason she was crying.
However, they could only look at each other in pity once they heard that Dolores kept saying Mariano's name instead of yours. They couldn't blame you for storming out, they would've done the same thing.
You hadn't left your house in weeks, not even bothering to open the door when Dolores would go to you and ask for forgiveness, not caring if there were people around.
Gossip was fast in Encanto, so they already knew why. And eventually, Dolores stopped coming.
Your family tried their best to make you happy, not pushing you to go outside, by cooking you your favorite meals and by telling you of gossip they had heard.
They tell you how Isabela broke Mariano's nose, how the proposal didn't go well or how Julieta's youngest daughter was rumoured to destroy the miracle. You had nothing else to do, so you just listened.
The only time you left your house was when your brother informed you that casita fell apart. You weren't ready to face Dolores, but you wanted to help rebuild the casita because the thought of the Madrigals having no home saddened you.
You accompanied the villagers in bringing building supplies to the Madrigals, and the first thing you noticed was Mariano's arm around... Dolores?
It didn't take long to hear from the villagers as you worked together to rebuild the house. Apparently Isabela never wanted to marry Mariano, and Dolores took this as her chance to talk to him.
It went surprisingly well. Wait, weren't you two together?
You asked Dolores if you could talk to her alone, ignoring the look of surprise on her face once she realized you were there.
Once you were alone with Dolores she begged for forgiveness and apologized for not being serious with whatever you thought you had with her. You were unsure if it was even worthy enough to be called a relationship, as neither of you have even labeled it yet.
You wanted to stop seeing Dolores cry, so you let her go.
Her smile was wider when her arm would be around Mariano's, her eyes would shine brighter everytime Mariano would recite one of his poems to her. She was happy with him.
But ofcourse, this meant you had to move on. As long as she was happy, you were happy, right?
