We shall overcome

I shouldn't have been surprised by what happened on Wednesday night. When I was leaving my office from downtown Vancouver (to watch the game at a friend's place near Granville Island), I saw wave after wave of young kids under the age of 25 streaming into the Downtown core off the Skytrain. It was already 4:30pm. There was no way these people were going to get into the live site or a bar, for that matter.

They were here to do what most young people want to do: get drunk and party with a bunch of people. And the thousands of them were mixed up with a few hundred people who wanted to riot (I don't know people that carry around hammers and molotov cocktails for fun). I could sense this before the puck dropped and I wanted to get the hell out of downtown. Whether the Canucks won or lost, I am pretty sure we would still end up with a riot.

Where did these people come from? I want desperately to believe that no Vancouver citizen would voluntarily destroy their city and that they were all from somewhere else. A lot of them weren't from here, but there is no use in making generalizations.

Whoever they were, they didn't just destroy property, they tried to destroy my, and every other Vancouverite's, civic pride. I don't care that much what the world thinks of us, but it matters to me if the real people of Vancouver stop caring about the city and stop engaging in what makes Vancouver a great place to live and - my worst fear -stop holding fun, public gatherings. 

But yesterday, I saw thousands of people, volunteers (including many teenagers around the age of most of the rioters), doing this:

Pretty much every window along Granville St. is broken and boarded up. But every board is filled with messages like this:

On June 15th, I went from the lowest of lows - crying for a city I thought would never be the same. But yesterday, I felt more pride for Vancouver than I had during the Olympics. Thousands of people taking back their city and expressing shame, sadness and love in the face of violence and destruction.

That is my Vancouver.
