Bears Win Pac-12 Tennis Championship
SAN DIEGO - A day after beating rival Stanford in the conference tournament, California captured the Women’s 2021 Pac-12 Tennis Championship on Monday when Julia Rosenqvist clinched a 4-2 victory over top-seeded UCLA at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The third-seeded Golden Bears, who last took home a conference title in 2014, also earned the Pac-12's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
"I'm just really proud of the girls, our coaching staff and everyone who's supported us," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "It's been a lot of work on and off the court this year to get us to this point. We were just so happy to be here, and then we wanted to do as well as we could.
When beating Stanford the day before, Coach Augustus didn’t appreciate the significance (because the 2020 season had been cancelled) - the Cardinal were the defending champs from 2019 and had won the last four titles.  “And now today, this is our first conference championship in this format, which is exciting. It's cool as an alum and as a coach to lead this program to make history at Cal for our athletic department and for our tennis program. It's still quite fresh. It hasn't sunk in yet. I'm proud of a great team effort all the way around today." Rosenqvist, a senior, defeated Elysia Bolton, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, at court-three singles to secure the win and snap the Bruins' 11-match winning streak. The win also gave the Bears a 2-2 split in the season series between the teams. Cal improved its record to 17-6. UCLA's record fell to 19-4, with the Bears handing the Bruins two of their losses this spring. Rain pushed back the start of the match from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and once the match finally began, UCLA took the early lead by winning the doubles point. First, Cal's Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov fell to Abbey Forbes and Jada Hart, 6-2, on court one. The Bruins clinched the point when Bolton and Abi Altick edged Cal freshman Jada Bui and sophomore Erin Richardson, 7-5, on court three. But the Bears bounced back in a big way in singles. On court one, Giavara, ranked 62nd, faced a familiar opponent in the eighth-ranked Forbes, who had beaten the Cal sophomore in all three of the teams' previous meetings this season. The Bruin also took a 3-0 lead in the first set on Monday. But Giavara, a San Diego native, clawed her way back to win the set. She later used a powerful forehand to close out the match, 6-4, 6-2, and tie the final, 1-1. Cal senior Anna Bright followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Annette Goulak on court six to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. But UCLA's Vivian Wolff soon topped Bui on court four to tie the contest, 2-2.
The Bears grabbed the lead back at 3-2 when Hannah Viller Moeller, another talented Bear playing in her first Pac-12 Championship, beat Sasha Vagramov, 6-2, 6-3, on court five. The final came down to three-setters on court two – on which Ivanov battled the 50th-ranked Hart – and on court three, with Rosenqvist eventually deciding the match.
"This team has so much potential, and today we just battled. It all came from the heart,” she said. “We're all super happy, and this gives us so much confidence right now. NCAAs are coming up. And we're not too cocky, but this win gives us so much strength and positivity going forward." Cal now awaits the announcement of the NCAA tournament field on May 3 to find out its next opponent.

Tea Time in Dehradun on a Breezy Summer Evening
It was on our journey back! Mussoorie being one of the closest hill stations to Delhi, we frequent the place especially for shorter and unplanned holidays. On our way back to Delhi on one such afternoon journey in the extended winters of 2012, we decided to have some tea time snacks somewhere on the way.
We were in a hurry to reach Delhi as the next day was a working day. Obviously, we just wanted a quick cup of tea and some namkeen snacks and then have dinner at home. It was late afternoon when we reached Dehradun, the picturesque town in the valley. Looking around for a clean and quiet place to sit at Rajpur road, we came across the board of Ananadam.
The very first impression of the place in one word was fresh. The ambience, the snacks & sweets displayed in the shelves, and the drinks being served around – all looked so fresh to us.
And fresh tea time snacks is what we got – well, to begin with
Our first interaction there was with a friendly bearer. Speaking beautiful Hindi replete with colloquial Muhavras (sayings). He told us about the background of Ananadam and what all was on offer. With our urge for tea at its peak, we ordered chai with dhoklas, onion kachoris, samosas and chaat. The kids wanted fresh lime soda.
We thought a portion each of the heavy snacks would be enough for two cars-full of people. We were wrong. The snacks were just melting in our mouth. With no greasy feeling of having eaten heavy, deep fried stuff, nine of us, with help from three kids polished off the first order within minutes.
Soon we were ordering corn bhel, paneer cutlets and mirchi vada. By the time we savoured those and the second round of beverages was finished, we realised it was 5.30 pm – the time for peak traffic to begin on national highway 58 in the late Sunday evening. The delicious tea time snacks at Anandam had cleverly seduced us to put our schedule back by a couple of hours.
And the brainwave striketh
That’s when we had an idea. If we drove through that traffic, our four-hour journey would have turned into six-seven hours long. That meant reaching Delhi by at least 10-11pm, having a late dinner and hitting the bed post-midnight only.
Instead, why not have an early dinner at Anandam itself, avoid late evening traffic jams and drive home in 4 hours flat, we thought. That way we could reach Delhi almost around the same time and straight hit the bed for the early Monday schedule.
What’s more, we would get a couple of hours for shopping at the local bazaar too.
And that is exactly what we did.
By 7.45 p.m. when we were back at Ananadam, they were ready to serve dinner. With the light snacks already digested during the two-hour street session in the cool breeze of the valley, we were ready for a full dinner.
Shahi paneer, malai kofta and dal makhani were the choices of the majority of us. The kids wanted Chinese. Two of the friends shared a dosa, an uttapam and a portion of idli-vada. One of the friends' wife tried the thali.
Needless to add the food was delicious and authentic. More on that later! Before we left, we picked up a lot of yummy looking namkeen snacks like Dal Moth Kaju, Golden Mix and Shahi
Badam Mix to serve the visiting friends at home.
All in all an experience full of Anandam!
