Artsakh is under attack again by Azerbaijan. Multiple civilian casualties and wounded reported.

At approximately 1:00pm local time [9/19/2023], the Azerbaijani Armed Forces launched a wide-scale attack against the Artsakh Republic. There are reports of shelling on the Line of Contact, in the residential areas of the capital Stepanakert, in towns and villages throughout the Republic. Artsakh’s Defense Ministry reports that Azerbaijani forces are trying to advance into the heart of Artsakh. 

 According to the Artsakh Human Rights Ombudsman, there are at least 2 casualties including one child, and 11 injuries including 8 children. For live English-language coverage of the situation in Artsakh and Armenia, follow EVN Report and Civilnet.

Chess Drama: The PIPI Saga

Part 1: Setting the Stage

It’s September of 2020, half a year into the pandemic. It’ll be months before there’ll be vaccines for COVID-19, and all the “normal”, “respectable” chess tournaments have been on hiatus, because they dare not meet IRL and they’re too set in their ways to go virtual.

Online chess events with less clout but bigger prize pools have stepped forward to fill this gap, including the “PRO Chess League” (PRO being an acronym for Professional Rapid Online), a team-format championship where teams from different places compete against each other for a title.

This year, the winners of the tournament are a shock: the Armenia Eagles, a lesser-known team even in this lesser-known format for pro-level chess. Their all-star for the tournament is GM Tigran Petrosian (no, not the former World Chess Champion by that name, but another guy whose dad named him after the former champion), who won three of the four games he played and tied the fourth - an almost unbelievably good result at the top level of chess.

In fact, it was so unbelievable that even one of the other players in the tournament started to imply that he didn’t believe it.

GM Wesley So (a top-10-in-the-world grandmaster who was playing for the St Louis Archbishops in this tournament, who won 2nd place) commented on the chess.com article announcing the Eagles’ win with this:

The “secret gin” was a reaction to Petrosian’s joking interview comment that he’d achieved his results in this tournament because he’d had a glass of gin to drink as he played.

The second part of the comment, though, is a deeper cut. On chess.com, often instead of publicly banning titled players who’ve been found to cheat, they’ll just contact those players and ban them privately.  Basically “your account won’t show that you’re banned, but never log in again if you want it to stay that way”. In other words, Wesley was implying that:

Andriasian and Sargsyan had been cheating in a previous event and were quietly told to leave town, and

Petrosian had possibly achieved this result by committing the same sin.

Part 2: Wait, cheating at chess?

Yes, it’s possible. To oversimplify... it’s like copying the answer to a hard test question off your genius deskmate, except the “deskmate” is your desktop computer. Chess programs have been better at chess than humans for decades now; in theory, all you need to do to beat a human is enter the game into Stockfish and see what it thinks is the best move.

In practice, it’s much harder than that. Try logging into a chess website and rocketing up the ranks by copying the computer’s homework, and you’ll be banned pretty quickly. It turns out that computer moves don’t look like human moves, and people playing computer moves don’t behave like people playing their own moves either; the big chess websites all have secret sauce to try to detect cheaters, or to investigate games where they think cheating has occurred.

Of course, in an officially organized, professional event, the most straightforward way is just for the players to be watched while playing, so that it’s clear whether or not they have Droidfish open on their phones - whether by a live tournament rep in the player’s house, or just by setting up enough cameras that the judges can see what’s going on. That’s the “proctoring” that Wesley mentions in his followup comment to the thread:

The PRO Chess League finals, despite being an online-native event, only requires the players to set up a single facecam - not the multi-camera setup that would be necessary to see what the contestants are actually doing. And the “single facecam” video from the event does show Petrosian repeatedly glancing down at... something... during the tensest moments of his games.

Part 3: Classics of Post

Early the next morning, Tigran Petrosian catches wind of the conversation going on in the article comments, and decides to reply to Wesley’s accusations. But the way he chooses to do it, well... take a look for yourself.

This pretty much instantly ascended to copypasta status in the chess fandom. The /r/chess subreddit had to install an automod to remove reposts of it. Meanwhile, /r/AnarchyChess installed a bot to automatically post it whenever any of the main characters or catchphrases of this story were mentioned.

Wesley accepts the offer for an IRL money match, with a final snide remark: “You are clearly the king of online chess, man. But I will dare fight you over-the-board.”

Unfortunately, the “PIPI Invitational”, as GM Hikaru Nakamura called it in a Twitch stream, ends up not happening. Later that day, chess.com and the Pro Chess League make a joint announcement that, after conducting an investigation, they determined that Tigran Petrosian was, in fact, cheating in the semifinals and finals of the tournament. Petrosian is banned from the PCL for life, the Eagles get tempbanned, and the prizes get redistributed... thereby proving Petrosian right that, one way or another, “liers will kicked off”.

July 26: Activists continue to congregate en masse in front of Yerevan City Hall, calling for the dismissal of Navasardyan and Misak Hambardzoumyan, the director of Yerevan Trans Ltd., a transportation operator. Hundreds of activists take to the streets in celebration, marching through Liberty Square and down Mashtots Street, the tricolor in hand. Just before 6 p.m., Mayor Markaryan announces that he is temporarily suspending the fare hike, but makes no mention of when prices may increase in the future. Some are seen in Republic Square distributing flyers printed with articles on public transportation per Armenian law. July 25: In a move signaling the understanding that the civic movement has no political undertones, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan-during opening remarks of a meeting with his cabinet-hails the initiative, stating that civil society is taking shape and the government must do more to address public concern.Īctivists continue their protests unabated. The movement’s name, “I Will Only Pay 100 Dram,” is revealed with the announcement of a rally scheduled at Mashtots Park-a symbolic site of civic protest. The news story stirs even more controversy and outrage. Meanwhile, Hetq Online publishes an article claiming that Navasardyan owns a Yerevan bus route, and that one of his sons runs a company that sells advertising space on public transportation vehicles. Small protests continue at bus stops throughout the city center. They are released shortly after hundreds of people swarm in front of the police headquarters. July 23: Protesters face resistance from riot police, and six more activists are detained. The social media, specifically Facebook, is being used as a main channel for creating awareness and disseminating information about the situation on the ground. Bus drivers continue to accept the 100-dram fares, some begrudgingly, as reports of quarrels with passengers come online.

Activists claim that the new fares are unjustified since the bus routes are owned by government officials or individuals with close ties to the government, and are thus lucrative businesses. Announcements are made with bullhorns urging citizens to continue paying the same fare. They also hand them out to passengers when buses pull up at bus stops.

At bus stops, protesters tape flyers to the windshields and windows of buses instructing people to continue paying the 100-dram fares. Three young activists, Davit Haroutyunyan, Sona Msryan, and Arsen Ohanyan, are detained for passing out flyers that call on commuters to refuse to pay the new fare. July 20: The new fare prices go into effect. One coin accidentally lands on the head of Mayoral Advisor Albert Gevorgyan while he is talking to journalists. Protesters at one point are seen throwing 50-dram coins in the direction of the main entrance, which is heavily guarded by policemen. July 19: Young activists protesting against the slated price increase congregate in front of Yerevan City Hall. The announcement is made by Henrik Navasardyan, head of the Yerevan Municipality’s Department of Transportation. The fare hike is the first in well over a decade. Electric trolley bus routes, favored by senior citizens because of the cheaper fare, will also go up from 50 to 100 dram. The owners of 48 companies operating privatized transportation routes had filed petitions with the Yerevan municipality to increase the fares, citing high maintenance costs and price increases in liquefied gas imported from Russia, which is used to fuel minibuses. July 18: Fares for public transportation by bus or minibus are scheduled to increase from 100 to 150 dram.

Serj Tankian: A Virtuoso Man

Hi guys!

I hope everyone is safe and are finding ways to distract yourself from the pandemic that’s going on outside. Since I know most of us are in quarantine right now and are probably getting bored of staying indoors, I wanted to create this blog and talk about the musician Serj Tankian.

I am aware that many people will not know who he is or have not even heard of the band System of a Down. If you’re one of them, that’s fine. I’m going to share 5 facts about Serj that I thought were interesting and good-to-know if this is your first-time hearing about him. So, get comfortable, relax, and enjoy the blog!

#5. Tankian Receives Metal by the Prime Minister

While Serj Tankian was in Armenia for a concert, he received an award from the Prime Minister, Tigran Sargsyan, for his contribution of recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The Prime Minister pointed out Serj’s support for developing rock music in the Republic of Armenia, since the music was uniting other Armenian rock bands in the country. 

Now, I don’t know many artists that are awarded a medal for their rock music by the Prime Minister, but I personally thought that was really cool. 

#4. He’s One of the Greatest Vocalists in Metal History

In Hit Parader magazine, Serj was ranked number 26 on the top 100 Heavy Vocalists list. Which I agree with because his vocals are very unique and distinctive. If you guys haven’t heard any of his songs I will recommend some at the end of this blog!

#3. Activism for Human Rights

Some of the things that Serj has been passionate about have been human rights, social justice, and recognizing genocides. If you have been a long time listener like I have, you can say that his passions are what have influenced his style of lyrics, and what have inspired him to cover many important issues in his songs. 

For example, he address issues on war on terror, genocide, overpopulation, the American prison system, and other environmental issues. His passions have also motivated him to organize and participate in protests along with American musician, Tom Morello. 

#2. Solo Career

As a solo artist, Serj released five solo albums between 2007- 2013. Here is where Serj gets unique and creative with his albums, because he decided to mix up this style of music as a solo artist, and focus on other genres instead of just rock. In his album Orca Symphony No.1, it took the form of a classical symphony and he added orchestras in his music, saying “I want the orchestra to be the electric guitar. I want to make an orchestra do what it has never done before….”He also included jazz and some electronic music to his work, making these albums more instrumental and less vocal. 

#1. System of a Down

Lastly... System of a Down. One of my favorite bands of all time. You can say they’re part of my childhood since I started listening to them at the age of 6. 

Now, where to begin...? 

Back in the day, in 1994 to be more exact, Serj along with Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan, formed the band most of us know today, as System of a Down. The name actually came from a poem that Malakian had written called, “Victims of a Down”, but since they wanted to appeal to a much greater audience, they decided to change victims into system, pretty smart if you ask me.

The band had a successful start to their career and accomplished to release five studio albums. Three of those albums debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, and the band was also nominated for four Grammy Awards, with their song “B.Y.O.B.” winning the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006.

However, that same year the band went on hiatus, giving Serj time to work on some solo projects. The band hasn’t officially broken up, since in 2010-2015 they reunited to do some live performances but let’s hope we get some new material in the near future.

With that being said, lets also hope they make a North American Tour and come to…oh, I don’t know…maybe a city called Houston located in Texas, so that we (meaning I) can see this great band perform live.  

So if you guys know how to make that happen… lets make it happen then!

PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenia’s opposition “I Have Honor” bloc, created by ex-President Serzh Sargsyan and the former head of the National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan, has decided to accept the parliamentary mandates they secured in the June 20 elections, Hayrenik party press secretary Sos Hakobyan said on Wednesday, July 21, Panorama.am reports.

The bloc was created in early 2021 when the Republicans and Hayrenik (Homeland) party decided to team up for the elections.

Hakobyan noted that no MP-elects from “I Have Honor” have given up their seats in the parliament, adding that withdrawals are unlikely, Panorama.am reports.

Seven lawmakers from the bloc – Artur Vanetsyan, Taron Margaryan, Anna Mkrtchyan, Ishkhan Zakaryan, Hayk Mamijanyan, Taguhi Tovmasyan and Tigran Abrahamyan – are heading to the National Assembly.

As reported earlier, Hayastan (Armenia), another opposition bloc, will be accepting the mandates too.

Caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party won 54% of the vote, while Hayastan (Armenia) bloc headed by second President Robert Kocharyan secured 22% of the ballots. “I Have Honor” bloc, meanwhile, secured less than 5% -f the vote

President Armen Sargsyan hosted today Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Air Arabia, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, and Adel Abdullah Al Ali, Director of the company.

Air Arabia, the largest air carrier in the Middle East and North Africa, and the State Interest Fund of Armenia will sign an agreement today on the establishment of a new Armenian national airline. The first discussions on Armenian-Emirati cooperation in the field of transportation and air communication took place in the UAE during the meeting of President Armen Sarkissian and the Governor of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The President of Armenia conveyed his warm greetings and best wishes to the Governor of Sharjah.
