"My life belongs to me"

From the very beginning, Nico Rosberg was a stranger to the laws of Formula 1. What's amazing is not that he's quitting now, but that he's lasted this long.
Let's not fail again, thinks Nico Rosberg. It's the last race of the season, late November, Abu Dhabi, 32 degrees. The asphalt is sweating, and so is Rosberg. The wind whirls desert sand across the track. Rosberg can't help but think back to the race two years ago, when he narrowly lost to his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Who cares about second place in a world championship? Back then, after the defeat, his wife Vivian took him in her arms, he cried, promised to make it next year with the fulfillment of his life's dream: to become world champion for once.
Perhaps this dream was the only thing that belonged to Nico Rosberg in recent years. His name, his face, his talent had become a brand. A money machine that brought millions in profits not only to Rosberg himself, but also to Mercedes and Formula 1. The price he paid for it: a life he was never really cut out for. Polarized at risk. Clocked to the rhythm of Formula 1: sleep, eat, train, abstain.
Never before has it taken a racing driver so long to become world champion
While Rosberg is sitting in his race car in Abu Dhabi, he hears a voice over the radio link. "Nico, it's getting tight! You have to overtake Max Verstappen!" his engineer shouts. Damn, thinks Rosberg, "Mad Max" of all people, 19 years young, a highly talented racing driver who stops at nothing. At the Grand Prix in Mexico, Verstappen touched him, so hard that it was almost over for Rosberg in the first corner.
Never before has a racing driver taken so long to become world champion as Nico Rosberg. He tried in vain for nine years. He was never an attacker, always driving in the slipstream and trying to avoid risk. Now, in Abu Dhabi, if he wants to win the title, he has to do what he shied away from for years: attack at the right moment.
Rosberg waits one lap, then pushes his Mercedes past "Mad Max." An hour later, after 205 races and 23 victories, he has finally done it: Nico Rosberg is world champion.
Just five days later, he ends his career, at the age of 31. As an explanation, he writes on his Facebook page, "For 25 years in racing, it has always been my dream, my one big goal, to become Formula One world champion." He mentions "all the work, the pain, the renunciation." Now, he says, he has reached the summit. It feels right to leave.
On Monday evening this week, Rosberg is back in the car. This time in London, without a helmet. His suit is not made of fireproof aramid fiber, but of fine blue fabric with pinstripes. A chauffeur drives him from the hotel to an honorary gala at the British Racing Drivers' Club, a club for old British men, among whom Rosberg, with an estimated fortune of 40 million euros, is exceptionally not the richest. The gala dinner is one of many obligatory events Rosberg has to attend after winning the title: on Tuesday he visits his sponsor in Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday he travels to his birthplace Wiesbaden, Thursday to the Mercedes racing factory in Brackley, Friday to the Automobile Association in Vienna, Saturday to the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen and the "A Heart for Children" gala in Berlin, and finally to Monaco, where he lives. Jackets and bags pile up on the back seat, the world championship trophy lies in the trunk, a heavy colossus, he drags it along to all his appointments.
Before the future can begin, he has to work off the past; after all, he is still employed by Mercedes. He earns 15.72 million euros there per season. For the Mercedes brand and for the Nico Rosberg brand, the weeks after victory are decisive. A Formula 1 racing driver only becomes visible at the moment of triumph, and only then can he be marketed well. Fans can identify better with the smile of a winner than with the technical data of the F1 W07 Hybrid, 1.6-liter V6 engine, turbocharger - that's the name of the race car in which Rosberg drove to the title. The fact that he is announcing his retirement in these very weeks is something of a total meltdown for Mercedes.
"When I explained my decision to my wife, she laughed and said, 'You'll never do it,'" he says. He had felt the desire to quit since the beginning of September. "It was funny: the thought of quitting motivated me, but at the same time I couldn't give it too much space, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to concentrate properly."
In the back seat of the sedan, Rosberg looks even slimmer than his 67 kilograms would suggest. It's hard to imagine that this frail man can race toward the apex of a curve at 360 kilometers per hour and keep a 700-kilogram race car under control. He would so love to sleep now, he says. In the last few weeks of the season, he has been able to do that less and less, "because of the pressure." The lack of sleep has turned the whites of his eyes red. His skin is pale, and sometimes his voice fails him. But if there's one thing he's learned in his career, "it's to persevere."
Rosberg's path to racing was preordained. Father Keke became Formula One World Champion in 1982, three years before Nico was born. When the son was a year old, the father quit. "Isn't it funny, my daughter is one now, too," Rosberg says. At the age of six, he drove his first go-kart race. The father kept the time. Rosberg began looking at the world through the slit of a helmet. He had doubts about whether he would really make it to the top, he says. But the question of an alternative never arose.
When he gives TV interviews, he talks slowly, in platitudes. Now he speaks quickly, without fear, pointedly. "For years it was written: 'Nico is too soft! He's too tough! Now I can just answer freely: I'm just right." Or: "Sure, I could still drive on, try to defend the title. But why? It doesn't get any more beautiful than this." The limo steers past Notting Hill Gate. He continues to talk. "If you're part of this racing business, you belong to Formula One and your team," he says. There's little room for self-determination, he says. "But my life belongs to me."
Rosberg has 2,563,762 Facebook friends. Besides his wife, he says he has three friends who really know him with all his fears and longings. Of course, his life up until now has also included his "racing family." He has done everything not to disappoint them, he says. "If it had just been up to me, I would have preferred to take my time until Christmas announcing my retirement," he says, "but I couldn't have done that to the team." He said he wanted to give them planning security.
In competitive sports, family is one thing. You get a lot of support - but rarely without expectations. Rosberg learned what happens when you don't live up to them over the weekend. Niki Lauda, head of the Mercedes team's supervisory board, publicly reprimanded his behavior. Rosberg should have warned the team, he said. Where would they stand now? He added that this was causing a huge amount of uncertainty. Rosberg says: "I don't understand what got into Niki's head. He must have misunderstood something." He says he was one of the first to inform the Mercedes team boss of his resignation. "He understood my decision."
There are probably no two people in Formula One more different than Nico Rosberg and Niki Lauda. Lauda, 67, won three world championship titles between 1971 and 1985. In the process, he crashed and almost burned to death in his race car. He fell into a coma with lung burns and burns - 42 days later he was back in a race car. Lauda's return after his accident made him a hero; his drive was to fight. Rosberg's drive was to fulfill a personal dream. Lauda needed the public's attention, the pressure. Rosberg always tried to minimize pressure. He preferred to hide his face behind the helmet he had worn since he was six years old.

"I've never felt such an intense adrenaline rush as I did at the race in Abu Dhabi," says Rosberg. The reason was not just "Mad Max," but his teammate Lewis Hamilton. While in the lead, he went against the team's orders and slowed down so much that he slowed down the entire race. The other drivers were able to catch up to Rosberg. Hamilton wanted to beat Rosberg for the win, hoping to win his third consecutive world championship title. After the race, Rosberg got upset about Hamilton's behavior. Today he says, "He's just a racer like everyone else." It gets quiet in the car. "We had a comparable situation in Monaco this year, but there I let him go first for the sake of the team."
Lewis Hamilton is the Robbie Williams of the sports scene, the perfect entertainer, the tattooed star who flirts with the pit girls and can become an ice-cold strategist at the decisive moment. Athletes are always able to captivate when they put themselves in the limelight. When you can see the effort, the joy, the agony. In Rosberg's case, all of this remained hidden behind his helmet. In Formula 1, he was the man without a face.
Rosberg says he received an e-mail from his engineer two days after winning the title in Abu Dhabi. Subject: "Timetable 2017.” As early as this week, it was supposed to start again: sleep, eat, train. Like being on a hamster wheel.
He gets out of the limousine. The room of the Racing Drivers' Club glows in blue neon light. Gentlemen in black suits sit at the tables. A montage of the 2016 impressions is shown on a screen: Rosberg jumping out of his Mercedes after the victory, Rosberg passing "Mad Max". While he waits for his entrance, he watches the video show through a crack in the door. An attendant presses the World Cup trophy into his hand. The slender Rosberg looks as if he must collapse under the weight. He smiles. Then he disappears into the applause.

The UK Pavilion, created by leading artist and designer, Es Devlin, will be launched on 1 October 2021 at Expo 2020 Dubai.
UK Pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai
Wednesday 29 September 2021 – Shaped like a giant wooden conical musical instrument, the Poem Pavilion gathers words donated by each visitor and uses an advanced machine learning algorithm to generate the cumulative collective poem which illuminates its twenty-metre diameter facade.
It is the first time a UK pavilion has been designed by a woman since the inception of Expo in 1851. Devlin conceived the building to express Britain as a cultural gathering place, a meeting and melding of ideas and languages from across the globe. Twenty five million visitors are projected to pass through Expo during its six month run, and each will be invited to donate a word at the ‘mouthpiece’ of the pavilion, then enter within the heart of the instrument where they will be surrounded by donated words glimmering in illuminated Arabic and English, underscored by a soundscape gathered from multicultural choirs across the UK. As visitors emerge through the facade of the pavilion, they will pass through the twenty-metre diameter composition of collective text: a new poem generated every minute.
Devlin collaborated closely on the designs with structural engineers, Atelier One, environmental design consultants Atelier Ten, executive architects Veretec and creative agency Avantgarde. Guided by the engineers’ expertise in sustainable construction, the team chose cross laminated timber as the pavilion’s prime material. Sourced from sustainably managed European forests in Austria and Italy and championed by engineers as a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel, the cross laminated timber is crafted around LED tiles engineered in Belgium and manufactured in China, installed by local British and UAE teams, while the poetry generating algorithm has been developed by creative technologists in California. The pavilion has been conceived as an expression of cultural inclusivity and its execution is a feat of European and international collaboration.
Ed Devlin’s exploration of machine generated poetry began with PoemPortraits at the Serpentine Gallery in 2016 in response to curator Hans Ulrich Obrist’s invitation to consider the idea of a ‘social sculpture’. In 2017 she continued her explorations at the Victoria & Albert Museum, turning their annual artist-conceived Christmas tree into a ‘collective carol’. In 2018 visitors fed words into the mouth of one of the lions in Trafalgar Square and watched the collective text projected up the length of Nelsons column.
The text generated by the Poem Pavilion uses a machine learning model called GPT-2, a large language model defined by 1.5 billion parameters. GPT-2 was originally trained on a broad spectrum of internet text, and for this project it was fine-tuned on a diverse and carefully curated selection of over five thousand poems—comprising over two hundred thousand lines of poetry refined over months of iterative feedback from a diverse team of poetry curators.

Es Devlin is an artist and designer who is known for creating large-scale installations and environments that combine music, language, and light.
Her work in machine generated poetry began with PoemPortraits at the Serpentine Gallery in 2016 in response to curator Hans Ulrich Obrist’s invitation to consider the idea of a ‘social sculpture’. Her latest large scale mirror maze, Forest of Us (2021) forms part of the inaugural exhibition at SUPERBLUE Miami alongside new works by James Turrell and TeamLab. The Imperial War Museum commission, I Saw the World End (2020) invited viewers to engage simultaneously with opposing perspectives on Europe’s largest LED screen in Piccadilly Circus, while the monumental 360-degree sculpture Memory Palace (2019) mapped shifts in human perspective over 73 millennia. She was Artistic Director of the 2021 London Design Biennale and created a spectacular forest in Somerset House’s central courtyard for the Forest for Change – The Global Goals Pavilion. Her new temporary forest project Conference of the Trees will be shown at COP26 in Glasgow in November.
Devlin’s practice originates in collaborations in theatre (The Lehman Trilogy), opera (Carmen on the Lake at Bregenz), Olympic ceremonies (London and Rio) and has created some of the most renowned stage sculptures (with Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, U2, Kanye West) seen by mass audiences around the world.
Her work has been shown at London’s Serpentine Gallery and the V&A and at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and she is the first woman chosen to design the British Pavilion at the World Expo – opening in October this year. Her practice is the subject of the Netflix documentary series: Abstract: The Art of Design, and part of the Masterclass series. She has won three Olivier Awards, the London Design medal and was made OBE in 2015. Her first song writing collaboration, Children of the Internet with British rapper Dave and producer Fraser T Smith, has just been awarded an Ivor Novello award for best new contemporary song.

Expo 2020 Dubai will run from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. More than 190 nations are taking part with 70% of the visitors expected from around the world. The overarching theme for Expo 2020 Dubai is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
The UK’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai is being led by the Department for International Trade (DIT), with support from the Devolved Administrations and other UK Government Departments.

It’s winter and it’s hot here…Dubai travels
In preparation for this ‘round the world journey, I spent a great deal of time researching and preparing for this leg of the trip. I say that because 1. I’ve never been to the Middle East and 2. There are a lot of social and religious rules that have to be followed when visiting the area. You see, being a caucasian, American woman most certainly has it’s advantages on any given day, but when traveling to a middle eastern country, the situation is just not the same. I did a lot of internet searching, watched a lot of You Tube videos on how to correctly tie a headscarf, and ensuring my clothing (which you know I had to be highly selective of on the trip due to the totally different climates we are going to) was socially and religiously appropriate. I told Matt we would just see what it was like when we got there and then I would adjust as needed.
Leaving Tokyo on one hand was a bit sad, as we were just getting to know Matt’s family and somewhat adjusting to the ways around town, but on the other hand, I was starting to get antsy and was ready to move on towards Dubai. Maybe it was the weather (it was cold, and mainly cloudy while we were there-that’s depressing for me), maybe it was all the strange food I’d been challenged to consume over the past 10 days, or maybe I was just seeking some bit of normalcy somewhere since I clearly was the outsider on this leg of the trip. Want a slice of humble pie? Go to a country like Japan with 127 million people where you are one of only a few who can’t read or speak the language. You’ll realize your place in the world real quick. I guess I don’t know why I thought I would get normalcy in Dubai, but my instincts (and research) implied Dubai was supposed to be like the “Las Vegas” of the Middle East (more on this in a bit), that seemed like something I knew and could understand.
We switched over to Emirates Airline for this trip, as I wanted to see how the service and quality were compared to other airlines we had taken. I know, I know, my instinctual quality assurance/continuous quality improvement personality is on all the time, even on vacation. The airline was nice, but Japan Airlines still seems to rank higher on my “best airline to fly.” What’s comical about that though is that when we were talking with the Emirates Flight Attendants, they report that the girls who work for JAL have a lot of “work drama between each other.” Workplace environments around the world seem to be the same everywhere, always some kind of drama going on. I was hopeful that was just an American thing, nope, totally universal. Our twelve hour flight seemed quite quick as we slept most of the time, so we were ready to go when we arrived in Dubai at 5:00 am local time.
We only planned four days in Dubai, as we had just a handful of things we wanted to see and do before moving on to our next destination. The weather was 75 degrees and sunny when we got there(hallelujah), so we were looking forward to a brief warmup before we head back into the cold again. Since we were only staying a few days, we decided to splurge a bit and stay at a fancier hotel. You all know that we never do that, in fact, it’s really against our vacation morals and values to do so, but knowingly and willingly(and maybe telling Matt I got a good deal on it), I booked us a few days at the Waldorf Astoria out on the Palm (palm tree shaped man-made island outside of Dubai proper). Between the nice hotel and the warm weather, my normalcy meter finally shot up. We then found a place for breakfast that served actual eggs and other breakfast foods, we had a another win!
Our first stop for the day was to the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding” for a tour of the remaining “old town Dubai,” and for our first visit to a real operating mosque. I loved this as our first experience here, as no question was off limits and the center prides themselves on being an open space for people to come learn and understand the culture and religion in a safe space. I got the chance to not only learn more about the Islamic religion, but also the social, family, and religious norms that go along with it. Our tour guide was fabulous and did a great job explaining everything to our eclectic group. I now understand the prayer schedule and commend all the Muslim men (and women) who are fully committed to their religion because they (the men) literally have to go into a mosque building 5 or 6 times a day to pray and be present with God. I mean, I can’t find the time to go to the bathroom that many times a day, therefore, I could never make it as a Muslim on that principle alone. I realize the societal norms here are arranged on this schedule, but that just seems extremely excessive (not to mention time consuming). I found fewer differences and more similarities in their religion and lifestyle of those practiced at home. In the end, everyone seems to be seeking the same things, its all just interpreted and practiced a bit differently. We had the chance to drink coffee (which has a process and is different than American coffee, as is the art of drinking it-anyone have a “silent server” at home?), as well as had the chance to eat dates and luqaimat(donuts), just as you would if you were a visitor in a Muslim home. So much about the home structure, the male and female role in the household, and the openness to welcome visitors was rather intriguing. We would highly recommend doing this experience if you have the chance to go to Dubai. It was a great way for us to start off our trip here.
We then moved on to see what the Dubai Mall was all about. This place is known for all the high end shopping, vending machines that sell gold, and a place to find just about every super car you could imagine, but also includes an ice skating rink, a huge aquarium, and these choreographed fountains (similar to the Bellagio Fountains in Vegas) that put on quite the show. This was a chance for us to get in some walking after being cooped up in the plane so long. We finished the day by having dinner poolside at our hotel, where I could soon slip away for some good sleep in a super comfortable bed (remember, we’ve been sleeping on a small mattress on a tatami floor for the past 10 days, so this was going to be like sleeping on the clouds).
The next day we got up and headed to the traditional spice, textile, and gold souks to see what kind of interesting finds we could muster up. I tell Matt, just keep walking, these people will haggle you, so you just have to keep going. Why are we not even three stores in and Matt starts “making friends.” Dammit Matt. So Matt’s new friend wants me to buy gold from him and proceeds to personally escort us around the souks. That was very nice of him (he had alternate plans), but unfortunately what he didn’t realize is that he hooked up with a real nice guy an and then me, whose middle name is “likes to mosey.” Hours later we’d visited all the souks (still with this personal escort) and I spent way too much money on tea, silks, gold, and saffron (even with haggling with them) then I want to admit. It’s fine, I hope people are up for a tea party when we get home, because I have several years supply now. Needless to say, Matt (who really doesn’t even want to be at the souks) ends up back behind one of the souks (we all know you aren’t supposed to go back there-hasn’t he seen any movies at all?), as they are trying to sell him fake watches. Again, Mr. Naivety isn’t clueing into my “we have to go because we have a tour we have to get to,” and proceeds to continue talking with these guys. I laid down the law, said we were leaving and escaped yet another crazy situation Matt got us into. Thanks Matt, thanks a lot.
We really did have a tour to get to, as the most exciting part of the trip for me was just about to happen. Since we decided to come to Dubai, I wanted to ride camels in the desert. I mean, when else am I going to get to ride a massive animal through the Arabian desert? So, I booked us this camel riding tour that also included a night of activities in a Bedouin camp. These are the traditional camps that desert travelers would set up when searching for water in the desert. Our tour guide from Viator tours picked us up at our hotel and drove us an hour and half into the middle of the Arabian desert. During the ride, he gave us all the inside details about Dubai (including things they probably don’t want others to know, but oh well). Once there we got loaded up onto our camels (my camels name was Simone, and Matt’s camel’s name was Goad. He was making groaning sounds, which I later found out that meant he was grumpy. Go figure, Matt is used to me, so working with a grumpy camel-he should be a pro! Our camel guide was from Pakistan and laughed at my off the cuff, socially and politically incorrect jokes, so I think he had a good time with us. Don’t mind these pictures of us on camels, my legs looks like the size of Texas (who would have thought on an animal so large I would look so big as well) and well Matt’s shorts now have a bit of a racy look to them-looking good Matt, nice legs there. After the camel ride (which is way harder than it looks, and definitely harder than riding a horse), we arrive at our Bedouin camp to watch some falconry and settle in for an evening of traditional Arabian music and cuisine (yes, this includes eating camel, but not the one’s we rode out on and al harees, which are foods traditionally served at weddings). Matt smoked shisha and I got henna done, all while we made new friends from France and South Africa. Again, we would highly recommend this tour above all others if you want a real authentic experience in the desert. Seven hours later, we returned to the hotel totally exhausted, but had a wonderful experience.
After sleeping in a bit, we spent the next morning and early afternoon exploring Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi was about an hour and half drive from Dubai, and is one of the more conservative emirates of the UAE. We went to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (which is absolutely beautiful by the way), as well as had a chance to see the Emirates Palace Hotel (also very beautiful) and Etihad Towers. We finished the day having afternoon tea and pastries at the Desert Palms Polo Club of Dubai. I know this is a bit out of the norm for desert life, but it was recommended so we went. I’m glad we did because the pastries were phenomenal, the polo fun to watch as well.
Dubai was a great place to stop for a few days, rest a bit and see some of the massive structures, unique modern architecture and historical character this place has created. Dubai has many characteristics that resemble that of Las Vegas (big structures and buildings, fancy fountains, big, flashy everything-it’s their goal to have the biggest of everything in the world), yet there is virtually no crime, everything is automated (the police don’t even pull you over, they just ticket you from cameras everywhere), and there is minimal debauchery anywhere. I think they said that Dubai is the third safest city in the world. Who knew? And definitely not what I expected. So, imagine a very conservative Vegas, without gambling and drinking, then you have Dubai.
In many ways we came here seeking a variety of different cultural and lifestyle experiences that would push us completely out of our comfort zone and with some things it did. I mean, before I struggled to understand why women would want to wear the full abaya, but after doing it a few times during this trip, I can totally get behind wearing it with the headscarf on any given day. It’s really like a comfortable nightgown, and that headscarf did wonders to conceal my double chin-#Winning The women do it both out of respect, but also because they want to bring back tradition to their culture, similar to what women are now doing in Japan by wearing kimonos, and not just for wedding or special occasions. I mean, you never have to do your hair, figure out what you are going to wear, and you can go “full ninja” as they refer to it (full face covered except your eyes), say at the grocery store, when you don’t want to be recognized). Overall, all the people we interacted with were extremely friendly and very helpful. Although 80% of the people that live here are from other countries, we still found that we got an authentic experience none the less.
Overall, we found that Dubai is in more ways than just one, a lot like Oklahoma. A country, rather than just a state, dependent on the “black gold” of the earth to fund their sheer existence. If they haven’t seen how well that’s worked out for us, they should probably check that out. The one thing I can say is they at least they continue to build their infrastructure and economy on tourism as their “Plan B” because when the well becomes dry, as it inevitably will, they might actually be able to make it as a civilized place of existence. Come see the place if you haven’t been, it’s worth three or four days as a stopover city. We don’t recommend coming in the summertime, as apparently you can fry eggs and bake cookies on the concrete, as it gets so hot (we heard close to 120 degrees during the day). It’s wintertime and we saw 75-80 degree days.
As we continue our journey west, we are excited to explore the U.K. for the next several days. I’ve finally found a destination I might actually not stick out like a sore thumb. I’m also secretly hoping for a spotting of the Royal Family, let’s hope my years of stalking them on the internet will provide me some insight on the best location to do so!

Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja, better known as Shailaja Teacher, has been praised for the way in which she has been leading the state’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In an interview with Indulekha Aravind, she talks about the factors that helped Kerala in the Covid-19 battle and the challenges that lie ahead. Edited excerpts:
What are the advantages Kerala has over other states in tackling the novel coronavirus outbreak? At the time of the Nipah virus outbreak, we had come up with a protocol and standard operating practices based on WHO guidelines, looking at Ebola and other infectious diseases, which were very helpful. We had been doing mock drills in case there was a third wave of Nipah — we remain on alert from December to June. Then, over the last four years, we have been strengthening the health department by bringing about basic changes such as creating family health centres, focusing on preventive healthcare and conducting regular training sessions for the public health division.
That was our background. As soon as we heard about the spread of a new kind of coronavirus in Wuhan, we became alert in Kerala, without anyone telling us. We established a control room in the state as early as January 24 and told each district to be on alert, to convene a meeting of their rapid response teams and to be ready to set up a control room. Three of the people we screened who returned from Wuhan turned out to be positive but thanks to our preparations, not a single person who was in contact with the three people caught the infection.
What were preparations like since March, when cases began to rise? At the state control room, we formed 18 different divisions, including surveillance, isolation, treatment, mental health training and counselling. Each division would be headed by an officer, with teams reporting to them. Each district had a team of 15 divisions. Very swiftly, we were able to transform district hospitals into corona hospitals. But with the number of cases increasing, we are taking over some private hospitals and hotels, in preparation for the coming days. Planning and vigorous training have been key.

Does Kerala have enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers? Protecting our healthcare workers is one of our biggest concerns because if they fall, who will treat the patients? At the time of Nipah, we got PPE and other equipment from the Gulf via a chartered flight, thanks to VPS Healthcare (headquartered in Abu Dhabi). But this time, no one can really help us because every country needs it.
The situation is so dire that (Malayali) nurses in the US are calling and asking me if we could send them some gloves and masks. What we did was to collect as much masks and PPE as we could when we heard about the spread of coronavirus. We have not reached a state where we can cannot treat patients because we don’t have the necessary equipment. We are continuing our attempts to collect as much protective equipment as we can.
What about ventilators? Coronavirus is spreading fast but so far, those who are facing difficulties and need ventilators are those with comorbidities. The rest are stable; we have been able to treat and discharge them. But as part of preparing ahead, we have taken a count of the ventilators we currently have and we know we will be able to get over 2,500 ventilators through the government route. We have given orders to purchase another 5,000 ventilators but they are hard to get because the entire world is rushing to buy them. We hope to get them little by little. At the moment, we have enough ventilators. If we face a situation where a lot of people, particularly the elderly, have to be admitted in hospitals, we will need more. To prevent this, we have launched a separate campaign to protect the elderly under the social justice department.
What are the plans to ramp up testing? We are making rapid strides. As of now, nine labs have been given permission to test. Currently we are able to test 1,000-1,500 samples a day. The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (in Thiruvananthapuram) was the last to get permission, and once trial tests there are done, we should be able to run 2,000-3,000 tests a day. There are also discussions about starting rapid testing, with random checking, to see if there is community spread. The machine has arrived, we are waiting for the kits.
What do you see as the biggest challenge in the days ahead? Throughout Kerala, we have kept over 1.2 lakh beds ready to admit patients. Of these, about 5,000 will be ICU beds with ventilators. So that aspect is taken care of. The challenge will be if community spread begins. Contact tracing will become tough since Kerala is a state with a very high population density. It is to prevent this that we started the ‘Break the Chain’ campaign and made social distancing compulsory. It has done well, but there will always be one section of people who doesn’t want to abide by the law, who wants to defy it. We are taking very strict action against those defying norms.
How much sleep are you getting these days? (Laughs) Well, I have all kinds of meetings every day. Each district has different problems. Unless there is good coordination, the work in districts will go awry. Even as we handle Covid, hospitals at the periphery need to continue doing regular treatment. Those with lifestyle diseases should not be denied their medicines. Patients on dialysis should not have to miss it. There are many concerns like this.
Then, the morale of doctors should not dip – we have to let them know we are with them, always. We also have to have reviews and meetings every day to plan for the next day. By the time I leave office, it’s past 11 pm. When I get home, I’ll have to call a few DMOs personally. Apart from all this, I get lots of calls throughout the night, some from abroad, some from people seeking solace, wanting to share their troubles. I attend what I can – by the time I get done with all of this, it’s very late. I try and sleep a little. The next morning, it will be time to become absorbed in work again. And this is not just me, it’s all of us.

Walid Hanna, founder and CEO, Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), said: "With its supportive environment and world-class infrastructure, the UAE has developed the most advanced tech ecosystem in the Mena region and attracted a favorable concentration of entrepreneurs, angel investors, incubators, accelerators and VC funds.With the large investments taking place recently, the pace and size of exits has also accelerated compared to previous periods with Souq, Careem, Namshi and others."
