Cool, Calm Catanduanes
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed how much of a gypsy I have turned into for the past year, hence my hashtag, #StruttingonSunshineTravels. I have set foot on places I only ever imagined about and these milestones have made me realize that as cliché as it sounds, dreams really do come true. London, Monte Carlo, Paris, Rome, Florence, Switzerland, Athens and Santorini are just some of the adventures that I have yet to tell you all about. But fast forward to my latest journey, I travelled to a cool and calm island called Catanduanes.
Prior to this trip, the only knowledge I had about Catanduanes was that it is always hit by typhoons. But after being immersed in island culture for five days, I came back educated, invigorated, contented and indebted of what I had back home. Let me share with you my Top 8 things to do in Catanduanes:
1. Cathy's Spring Resort- Nestled in fields of fresh tropical valleys, this place offers nature unparalleled, seamless for an afternoon dip in the springs. For merienda, have freshly harvested fruits and root crops straight from their backyard!
2. Mamangal Beach- With glistening cerulean seas and never-ending fine sand, this place has preserved its pristine splendor. If you get lucky like us, visit early in the morning on a weekday to enjoy the beach all to yourselves. Low tide is also the best time to try skimboarding!
3. Puraran Beach- With its distinctively peach-gold colored sand, this place is invigorating to those who want to bask in the glory of the sea, sand and sky. It is also home to the Majestics, the mighty surf whose fame is distinguished globally. By dusk time, watch as the sun kisses the beach and listen to the sound of waves cascading towards the shore infinitely.
What I Wore: Royal blue bikini set [Soleil Swimwear], Sheer Sabina Kimono [Carenzela Couture], Gold wire art necklace [Dainty Craft], Blue mirror aviators [Young Wild Free], Rose gold Lydia slippers [Soleful by Cez], Lime Crime Red Velvet Velvetines Lip Cream [Zoe’s Cosmetics]
4. “Kakana kita!”- Catanduanes is not only home to well-preserved beaches but also home to delectable and affordable food. Must-trys for me are Mang Impling’s Latik (caramelized rice cakes), Puraran’s fresh seafood; garlic butter crabs plus lobsters and Bicol Express of course!
5. Church Visits- Whisper a little prayer at Bato Church, the oldest one in Catanduanes that has stood the test of time and drive to the town of San Andres to see the miraculous Batong Paloway, believed to be a growing stone which bears the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
What I Wore: Rastaclat Inspired bracelet [Arm Candies MNL], Pink loom band [Glam n Charms], Pink rosary bracelet [Monograms MNL], Silver monogram necklace [Fashtaginfinity], Embellished heart sunglasses [Les Moda], Flamingo bikini set [Soleil Swimwear]
6. Luyang Cave- Trek down the monument that has witnessed the bloodless massacre of the natives who fled from the Moro Pirates during the 17th century and feel the cool, damp air while going deeper into the cave.
7. Maribina Falls- A tranquil and slightly ascending hike passing a tiny bridge and simplistic houses will lead you to the gushes of the secluded Maribina Falls. Gazing at its waters would make you want to take a refreshing dip in its cool pools and rest on its adjacent boulders afterwards.
8. Appreciate nature’s wonders- When the clouds clear, take a look around you and you might just see Mayon Volcano’s silhouette in its serene splendor.
“Happiness, not in another place but this place. Not for another hour, but this hour.”
Aside from the eight things that I have mentioned above, everything else in Catanduanes is predominantly humble. Rustic living was really something that I relished, without any hustle and bustle of a big city. A veiled gem that is yet to be noticed, I would definitely come back to get away from the city and enjoy the cool, calm island life in Catanduanes.
Merci beaucoup to Catanduanes' Department of Tourism officers for taking good care of us and Rakdell Inn for being our home away from home.
P.S. Find me on Instagram! :)
