           he rubs his thumb under his eye ,    across his cheekbone .    it’s impressive ,   definitely ,   even if it is a bit amoral to trick people out of money .    still ,   he shouldn’t laugh ,   but he does ,   because it is oddly amusing the way that scott brandishes the few cents he’s managed to make off of innocent bystanders .    he plucks a coin out from between his fingers ,   observes it in the light ,   and then tuts.

          “   what are you going to do with it ,   mein freund ?   “    he questions ,   because it’s not like a dollar is going to get the man very far at all .     what can you even get for a dollar these days ,   anyway ?       “   put it in a piggy bank ?   “

So, there is a new bird in the flock! He is the Queer Uncle.

He is in the foreground. The difference in size between him and Tinydude (aka Peanut) is not due to perspective, he genuinely is about twice the size. Tinydude has a little growing left to do but is also just small. Similarly, as an adult male Pumpkin’s colours are more vibrant than those of a hen or juvenile male, but Tinydude is just not brightly coloured. Tinydude also has his ‘crest’ up - ie, those couple of feathers right behind his beak - to say O HI I AM ALERT.

(Other fun physical differences to note: adult male’s eyes are orange, younger one’s are brown; tinydude is moulting and is therefore scruffy and has some pin feathers coming through but he is also all puffed up because this is their first meeting outside the cage and he’s a bit worried; pumpkin’s left wing is broken and feathers are sticking up, also he has a birth defect where he’s missing the final digit and claw on all four of his front toes.)

So, why is he the Queer Uncle? Well, I adopted him because he was lonely and my boy was lonely. My lad no longer has his sister with him, and the Indian ringnecks just don’t care about him enough to actually interact with him beyond the occasional HEY I WANT THAT FOOD THAT YOU ARE EATING, so he promptly developed a hopeful sad relationship with every mirror in the house. ‘You need a friend who looks like you,’ said I. Meanwhile, Queer Uncle Pumpkin was hand-raised but then spent three years living in a mixed aviary, where he shunned all females of his own species but delighted in looking after every other bird, especially the babies. Including helping to sit on the nests of budgies, cockatiels, and Indian ringnecks. And raising young birds, and welcoming new birds to the flock. Sadly all of the breeding stock was then sold, so he had nobody to love and cherish. :( ‘You need a friend’, said his owner, and we shipped it.

Within 24 hours of acquaintance, Pumpkin had taught Peanut his own special THIS IS OUR SONG cackle. After 30 hours, he tried doing a wooing dance for him, but though Peanut was flattered and fascinated he had no idea what was going on, so the attempt was not repeated. Instead, they just perch next to each other, run around on the floor after each other, yell anxiously if the other one is out of their sight, and happily share food and exciting new noises. 

It is love.

I have an army of bird friends (well, four) but all they want to do is share my food. Yesterday I went into the lounge room to eat my pizza ALONE THANK YOU pizza is NOT for birbs. Lucy starts complaining loudly from the other side of the door. Went back into the kitchen after a minute to get the pepper grinder. Just as I'm sliding the door shut after me again, ZOOM Lucy rockets through the crack and lands smugly on the table beside my pizza. I say NO PIZZA FOR BIRBS and go to pick her up. She goes BOUNCE up to the curtain rail, then onto my head. I say FINE and go back into the kitchen to put her down. As soon as I cross the threshold she goes ZOOM back into the living room. I go back in there and sit down saying FINE YOU CAN SIT ON MY SHOULDER BUT NOT - no Lucy NO CHEESE FOR YOU stop tha- oh hi tinydude! a tiny whistling birb has come running in from the kitchen through the open door. he runs around all over the floor making happy noises. He is immediately followed by his sister because he always is and they both run around all over the floor going HI?! :D :D in whistles. I sigh. I say FINE BIRD-HERDING TIME. I scoop up tinydude while Lucy swings smugly from my plait, and just as I get back into the kitchen - Linus barrels over my head and crashes into the sofa.           he only knows of the man ,    having never actually met him .    but there’s a lot of people he’s heard of but never actually met ,   especially in this line of work .     not only is it a surprise when he does ,   but it’s also a lucky one .    he’d thought there was something strange about this particular fight .     it was going far too easy ,   and he could swear every now and again in the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of someone swatting at themselves .    it’s lucky because had he not been paying attention he might have stepped on him .    there’s half a dozen unconscious men (aliens?) on the floor by the time nightcrawler lowers all three of his swords ,   the third hovering about his ankle ,   clutched by a tail .    he’s panting ,    exhausted ,   excessive teleportation giving way to exertion .   he turns his gaze to the other individual ,   and raises a brow .

      “   you should have told me you were here !    “     he exclaims .    his tone isn’t unpleasant -- merely surprised ,   and maybe even a little concerned .    god knows what would have happened had he teleported around the man .   in fact ,   he doesn’t even want to think about it .   “   thank you for your help ,   though .    you’re quite formidable ,    mein freund .   “

Since the beginning, I've never really had a name for these little creatures. I've just been calling them tiny dudes. But a friend has recommended the name petit espièglerie for them! I think it's amazing ( I am not sure if I'm writing it correctly and/or using it correctly, I do not know any French ;( ) but it means little playfulness or mischief! I think it's a wonderful name for them, it's so fitting!! ♡ @eveningserein
