Corporal Litefoot, Daughter of Sgt. Hatred
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like she’d have a half shave with a rat tail braid. her V would be in face paint and dots to mimick traditional indigenous face paint. and all her relationships would be just as toxic as her parents was,she goes through femmes monthly and they all break her heart. Hits on Dean because she thought he was a femme tomboy. She’s called “Corporal Litefoot” becuase Corporal is one down from Sargent and Litefoot is an actual Amerindian actor. Her real name is Tallulah Haine LittleFoot but she loathes her abnormally small shoe size so she overcompensates by wearing giant clown shoe tier boots over them She’s daddy’s “brown little boygirl” at the end of the day and will underplay and overlook his questionable actions to this day.

As a poc, I have a complicated relationship to vbros. On one hand, the world is really immersive and the characters can be really great, on the other hand it is a very white show and has a racism problem. Many of the white characters have done racist things when characters have gotten punished or killed for less. There's also barely any side characters of color. And even then, many jokes get made at them regarding their races, because they're not seen as the norm. Also because it's an adult swim show made by white guys.
Off the top of my head, there are 4 side characters of color (Orpheus, Jefferson, Kano, and Dr Z). If we want to be generous, we could include Al. Maybe even Triana with her being biracial, albeit entirely passing as white. Even with those characters, Orpheus became whitewashed over the years.
However, ironically enough, he's the best written character of color. He's a very nice, multifaceted character. He's even become a fan favorite. He's also had no racist comments made towards him in the show. Which was a pleasant surprise. Especially since he lived on the compound with Rusty of all people. As happy as I am with that, it feels off because why did they spare only him but not others? I'm not sure if his race was ever figured out as the writers. It never got brought up, unlike other characters. I won't lie, that gives me a feeling they didn't write him as a brown man in mind. If they did write him with that in mind, he probably would've been written worse. It feels like they could only relate to him and made his character good by thinking he's white like them. Hell, they even projected their weird breakup feelings onto him.
With Jefferson, his character is a mixed bag. He's a cool character and very capable. He's a solid character, all things considered. It's just that he gets racist jokes thrown his way. And just, the show has one black side character, and they can't even act right. Why is racism, the hatred and otherness of one's entire existence, so funny. I noticed that each episode except one that he was in had at least one antiblack joke. That's an insane ratio. The worst joke was in the Halloween episode, where he was at the party. They specifically made his character open the door to a side character, red mantle, doing blackface. It was to make a shitty reference to some niche movie and just oh my god, can you stop being shitty white nerds for a second? People who think shit like this is funny makes me want to project years of racial trauma into their brains so that they could finally Get It. Again, this is the best black character they have, but they to make him go through cheap antiblack jokes.
At least with Kano and Dr Z their skin tones stopped being yellow. The other times we see characters of color are when they're background characters. They're either there to make a scene feel full or they're labor workers. The worst is when they were what I'd describe as background antagonists. One-off antagonists that aren't really villain villains. Moreso regular criminals. These tend to be depicted as black and latino. This was more common in early seasons and stopped happening over time. Which obviously great albeit bare fucking minimum, still doesn't change that it happened.
For a world that critiques the old mentalities from previous generations and even specifically denounces generational toxic masculinity. They don't say shit about the blatant racism of the Johnny Quest times they parody. And the times they try to, it's just showing racism and doing nothing about it. Princess Tinyfeet is the worst example of this. She's a blatant racial stereotype. Who for whatever reason, used to be married to Sgt Hatred, an American soldier. And Sgt Hatred is a whole can of worms.
With Dr Z who was apart of the Quest era, at least they tried to give him a character. The thing I will say is that he's voiced by a white guy (Publick) doing a stereotypical vaguely Eastern Asian accent. Something I wished when watching the show was for Dr Z to mention the old racist era he lived through, and maybe even how the present is still rough. The toxic masculinity of the era got mentioned, so why not that too. It would've been so obvious too.
I won't lie, a part of me is glad they didn't try to handle the racism because it would've been a horrible train wreck. I can get why they didn't delve too into it, they're white after all. I just wish there were more poc in the team and sensitivity writers because they were desperately needed. But for a show that can't even handle white women, I'm not surprised they can't handle people of color. For a show whose best thing they were able to tackle was toxic masculinity, I find it ironic how misogynistic they still were. Like quick, why were the side effects of misogyny that affect you 🫵 handled the best.
The thing is, if they did try to critique the racism, they'd alienate the audience, and it'd also be strangely hypocritical of them. Venture Bros'/Adult Swim's main audience is white cishet men. The ones least affected by bigotry. They're able to laugh at bigoted jokes, and they're the most marketable people. White guys will appeal to other white guys. In the early 2000s, white creators were able to get away with much more. Not because it was alright but because it was easier for them to shut down minorities calling them out. Despite how "normal" it was, that doesn't change how that fed into a very toxic, bigoted culture. Despite today still being hellish for minorities, it was even worse just a couple of years ago.
Venture Bros obviously did not invent racism/bigotry. The show is very much a product of their time and environment. And whenever I think about that, it feels draining. Especially having had to live through the 2000s. The show can be amazing when it wants to be. There's so much potential and a lot of charm and character. I really enjoy it, and that's why I'm so critical of it. Not only because I want it to be better but because I want something better for fans of color. We barely get anything, and the least we should get are characters that look like us and are respected. Just like their white counterparts. It's like, how am I supposed to feel when Sgt Hatred gets redeemed and made a main character before we got a character of color that didn't face racist jokes/got whitewashed. Or even before we got a female character whose existence didn't hinge on their relationship to a man. Obviously, the show doesn't hate people of color. They've tried to better over time, which again great. But it barely felt like they respected poc enough.
With the movie, despite its own problems (not helped by Adult Swim screwing them over), you could tell they were trying. And it was really appreciated. Jefferson had a big spotlight, and there weren't jokes against him. We even got to know a bit more about him. It was genuinely his best. Ignoring Orpheus still looking like he's in a perpetual state of winter, that aspect of the movie was alright.
I'm very glad to see fans who are critical of these aspects. It makes me more happy seeing them vouch for poc. However, there's still a large majority that ignores or even excuses the racism. Unsurprisingly, these tend to be the white dude bro fans. But I've seen even the more liberal fans excuse/ignore stuff. The fanbase is very white, just like a lot of other fanbases. I can get why a supportive white person feels they wouldn't be best to call out the show's shit. I just wish they'd mention it more with a simple "oh there's xyz in this episode and it wasn't alright." Something as simple as that carries a lot of power in very white environments. Also, of course, uplift other fans of color, especially when they talk about or face racism. Things as simple as that make me breathe sighs of relief. It personally encourages me to interact with communities more.
I'm unsure of how to close this off. This feels like a topic you could talk about all day. All I wish is for things to be better, you know? Hopefully this all makes sense. I just wrote shit off the top of my head. I'd love to hear thoughts expanding or adding on to stuff. Really hope this reaches the right people

The Venture Bros. #57: “Operation: P.R.O.M.” | November 21, 2010 - 11:30PM | S04E16
Folks, it’s a big one. I’ve been trying to shed myself of being painfully complete or even practically readable with these blog posts, but this one’s special. I may even run spellcheck.
Operation: P.R.O.M. is sort-of a mid-series finale. It feels like the ending for a phase of the show. Hank and Dean are graduating to young adulthood with a homeschool Prom while the show formally says “bye bitch” to certain characters, such as the spectre of 24 or Triana, who, would you believe it, doesn’t appear in the show after this episode! I had to look that up to make sure it was true! Dean blows it with her and never sees her again (on camera, anyway. I haven’t read the expanded universe novels)!! I respect them for their unwavering devotion to not fixing Triana up with Dean. It simply makes sense.
This not only wraps up some “important” story threads, but it also has quite a few memorable standalone scenes; Triester’s apparent struggles with becoming a Hulk, the definition of “Rusty Venture” as a disgusting sex act (available on blu-ray with the choice of uncensored or censored audio, for those of you believe less is more), and the wonderful final scene where Brock races to save the Ventures from doom set to Pulp’s “Like a Friend”.
This sequence is, for my money, the best thing the show ever did. Lotta poetry in there. Brock giving a shit about the Ventures for the first time ever. Life in the face of death/death in the face of life. The fact that it still turns into a scene where Brock gleefully kills monsters makes it very true to the show’s own identity. You could argue quite easily that not only is this where Venture Bros. peaked, but also Adult Swim itself; and the fact that the monsters are modeled after Zorak from Space Ghost is very symbolic. Not to mention the meta-aspect of Jackson and Doc actually successfully clearing a very good and popular song and being able to use it effectively, a thing that they very rarely got to do.
Triester’s fate was taken from Ben Edlund, whose post-mortem wish is to be shot into space with a note urging aliens to revive him. This intent is mildly changed, I think, in the Gargantua-2 episode, where the implication is that he was aiming for Jonas Jr. I guess the implication here is that the vacuum of space can just preserve a body?? Is this true @neiltyson???
Hank’s attempt to date the mail lady was actually based on a throwaway joke about him having a childish crush on her in a previous episode. Shit like this makes the commentary tracks or wikis really valuable; I don’t think I would’ve remembered the significance of him showing up to the mail lady’s house organically.
Finally: It’s worth noting that one element of this episode might not come off too well, which is that Rusty inadvertently saves the family by drugging the prostitutes he hired with his own brand of Spanish Fly. I recall at the time that this aired, Jackson actually engaged with a few comments sections where the show was perceived as misogynistic. Also, Princess Tinyfeet in S&M appliances took some heat, with one comment I remember saying that they found that bit disturbing because she “looked scared” in one shot.
Further complicating this was the story doesn’t make it EXPLICITLY CLEAR that the prostitutes are actual double-agents. Some could interpret the twist being that Moltov was simply lying about the double-agent thing to distract Brock. There is a deleted scene on the blu-ray that actually does make this clearer, but I saw a few confused people for whom this added to their revulsion. Because, of course, Rusty is still drugging women that he himself thinks are prostitutes. Jackson and Doc maintain that Rusty is just a bastard who does horrible things like that, and viewers are just going to have to accept that.
Look, do I actually care about this? Not that much, just because I simply don’t get a genuinely misogynistic vibe from Jackson and Doc. Not to say my read on this is more valuable than yours. I’m mostly mentioning this because the central idea here isn’t “this doesn’t hold up now because of woke”; it’s one of those cases where they got some pushback almost immediately. I just sorta don't like the idea of anyone mischaracterizing a modern critique as being a new thing.
I do love this episode still, and I still think it’s the show’s peak. I’m not necessarily here to say that I think the show made a mistake by continuing on afterwards, but they never topped themselves after this. Described in the book Go Team Venture, this episode basically rejuvenated Jackson and Doc’s love for the show, and they described how they basically just started getting really excited for a fifth and came up with most of their ideas while producing this episode. So what if season five isn’t as good as anything in this episode? As long as we’re clearing season three, I’ll forever give this show slack.

None of the Venture Bros characters would stan KPop are you kidding me. Not even the boys I think Dean is too focused on books and his studies to care and Hank would say something about it being stupid because it's "for girls".
Rusty is canonically a progressive rock fan, he listens to Crimson King for God's sake. He'd also be really misogynist about the whole KPop thing too. The ONLY time he might take an interest in it is if it is beneficial to him financially, or he'd find the lady singers sexy, unless they're underage of course. Even beyond that he'd just think it's very low quality and not only for girls, but also for children.
Brock is Brock. You've seen how he treats people. You know he loves Led Zeppelin. That is just delusional.
Most of the other characters are too old, or their taste in music is already too specific to enjoy (and pretty much every music thing in Venture Bros is something from the 60s to the 80s). Not even Pete and Billy.
The Monarch is not listening to KPop or stanning Loona. He does not know what a Loona is. You ask him and he goes "what the fuck are you on about" and he kills you.
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch would be personally offended that you'd ever assume she'd be into it. Besides, she likes prog rock like Rusty.
21 is only in it for the money the collectibles go for. He's a scalper.
St. Cloud might be into it, I don't know, I don't like him so I wouldn't be surprised.
Hatred would enjoy it too, probably. The girls would remind him of Princess Tinyfeet though and he'd cry.

rewatching vbros rn and the most glaring examples of "oh wow the punchline is just a character being racist/sexist/shocking and offensive on purpose, there's nothing witty here and the joke itself is bigotry or The Thing" are 1) the entire existence of Dr. Z being made into a whole ass recurring character when he's just Chris McCulloch with a fake asian accent and 2) sgt hatred saying he wants to fuck little kids in The Buddy System. And 3) princess tinyfeet, all of the other racial caricature characters that are supposed to be "subversive" by existing and having the show go "Oh my god, this is so fucked up cuz its RACIST! and unlike the shows we parody, we are aware of this!" (Kiki, hector & swifty, god knows the amount of one-off gags) but then just rehash the racism. Like the bit where Dr. Venture drives off to the border to pick up migrant mexican workers. And the joke is that he's scummy because he does that, while also rehashing the stereotype of mexicans as cheap laborers. It doesn't say anything new.
Venture Bros often uses characters of color as a punchline because of their race, often tying back to pop culture tropes (again, i understand the intent with Princess Tinyfeet and Jefferson Twilight. I know what they're parodying. Old westerns and blaxploitation films.) But then they never get fleshed out beyond their race. It's almost like the writers are scared to push past that. I'll edit this and just make a post abt it later because this is just rambling. I think its a flaw w the writing itself and not just "the writers being Problematic!! Teehee" or whatever. Like i dont think jackson publick *intended* to be racist by having 21 say "little asian freaks" or whatever, i think its just a byproduct of the joints vbros's comedy hinges on- shame, dispassionate irony, etc
I wish I could have an open discussion of racism in vbros like that homestuck panel. But i dont think theres enough nonwhite venture bros fans for that LOL
also no offense but white people are convinced liking something means liking EVERYTHING about it. I love venture bros but the "satirical" racism is not my jam ok.
i could write a blog post about it and get more hate anons about how im a fake fan....
like some of the racism is supposed to parody jonny quest era shit but just ends up rehashing it, i shouldnt have to explain why a girl in stereotypical "indian" clothing being played straight is a bad choice. Or like. Just random bits like pete white making asian jokes or henchman 21 making asian jokes or the entirety of the pilot
its bad for nonwhite fans trying to actually criticize media they like already, but with something like vbros, its already regarded as super progressive for its time or whatever when it rlly isnt. Its attitudes around race are regressive and very White Liberal- insensitive commentary that really shouldnt have been written by 2 white dudes. Or offputting "jokes" that serve no other purpose than just rehashing racism. The parody angle only goes so far before it becomes Actual Racism (the kano can't drive because he's ASIAN jokes werent funny the first 2 times). The parody angle doesnt provide any interesting commentary on race other than "hey, isnt it so funny how they were racist back then?" .
this is nonsense sorry
