Chapter 22

A black suburban tore through the khaki colored prairie. The wheat had all been cut, leaving an endless stretch of yellow stubble all the way to the horizon. The SUV had a destination, the substation. All of the transormers were black and singed.

Two men in white shirts and black slacks hopped out of the truck. They were talking about whether or not it was better to buy an RV, or to just trick out an old van and use it as a camper. Both were white guys that had short black hair and were clean shaven. Mid to late 30s.

“RVs are for kids! You want to spend 250k on some land whale, and then what? You drive it down to Devil’s tower, probably worried the whole time that you’re going to blow over in the wind, or not make it up a hill, only to relax for a night and start over the next day?!” One said to the other.

“I don’t worry about it tipping over”

“That’s because you’ve never driven one”

“I drove one!”

“Bro, you’re not even married!”

“Exactly, and if I’m a guy with a tricked out van, then I’m a van guy”

“What’s wrong with being a van guy?”

They were undoing the lock on a large chainlink fence. A chain with a padlock interwoven within the links.

“Van Guys hang outside of high schools, and live down by the river. I don’t want to be a Van Guy”

“You could save a lot of money living in a van though”

“I’m not saying I need one of those ridiculously huge RVs. I’d be happy with an old Winnebago. Some propane hookups, a bathroom.”

“I’m telling you man, a van is the way to go. You can always trick it out more too. Get a unicorn painted on the side of it? wooooweeeee. That’s the life”

“So why don’t you just get a van?”

“Maybe because I don’t want to be a Van Guy living down by the river. “

They both laughed an walked over to the breakout box which had been the site of the gopher attack. He opened up the case to reveal what appeared to be a fully barbqued plate of spaghetti stuck to a wall.

“I can’t believe Gophers did this” one said to the other.

“Little bastards. There’s a reason why every year they have that competition to shoot em. My buddy brings his 50 cal down. You ever seen a gopher hit with a 50 cal? HA! Not much left I tell you that much!”

“That must’ve been their hole over there” One crouched down, and inspected the front end of the hole. It was located about 5 feet away, on the other side of the fence. As he was looking, something glinted off the sun.

“Shit, there’s something in that hole!”

“Yeah, maybe you can trace the gopher shit back with DNA and find out which gopher did this. Bring him up on terrorism charges!”the other said jokingly.

RV Guy walked outside the enclosed area and knealt down by the gopher hole. He pulled out a tiny piece of silver, and held it between his fingers.

“Found some metal poop?!” Van Guy said from inside the enclosure.

RV Guy pulled a small plastic bag from his pocket and dropped the little piece of metal into it. He came back inside and inspected the breakout box closely. There were bits of feathers and fur singed into the surface. He pulled a few of these out, and placed them into separate evidence bags as well.

I swear to God, what’s the use of Gophers. God just put em here so horses can turn an ankle in their holes”

“They’re food for predators, and they aerate the soil dipshit” RV Guy responded.

“Aw come on now. There’s plenty of mice. I bet the majority of a coyotes diet is mice, and rabbits. Those are good prey animals. They’re just fluffy, they don’t cause any harm” Van Guy continued.

RV Guy was inspecting the burn out transformer atop a long metal pole. It looked like a burnt up Christmas tree.

“Come on man, stop trying to be Sherlock Holmes. We have video of the incident. Some gophers attacked the wires, and then some birds were fighting over which gopher to eat. Lets just write up the report and be done with it. I’m sick of this goddam town. Are we ever going to turn the internet back on? Most of these dumbshits still have no idea the rest of the world is carrying on like normal. Goddam bubble” Van Guy said.

‘Have you not noticed that this is a bit more than an internet blackout?” RV Guy said. He continued “Quicksilver still hasn’t recovered their cloud. That cloud is worth billions of dollars”

“Give me a break. If I write a Google doc it saves it without me doing shit. They’ve got a backup, plus, how could a fire at a substation have anything to do with them losing data? Makes no sense”

“They lost the data after the computers were rebooted. Not before, and not because of the outtage. “RV Guy said

“Still doesn’t make any sense” Van Guy said.

“What do you think our job is? Like. What do you think we do?” RV Guy said.

“Fill out reports?” Van Guy said with a smile

But RV Guy’s gaze was transfixed on the burnt up Christmas tree transformer.

“There’s something stuck in there” he said. Squinting at it. He walked right up to the pole and put his hands on the “climbers helpers” which were located on both sides of it. They had been put there for maintanence workers. He lit right into them without hesitation and began his ascent up the pole.

“Goddam! You sure the power’s off?” Van Guy shouted from below. But RV Guy paid no attention, his mind was set on seeing what was embedded into that singed mess up the poll, and he quickly made his way towards it.

When he got to the top of the pole, he looked back down, and saw his parter was taking a video of him, and then pointing the camera back at himself while doing commentary and laughing his ass off.

RV Guy put his hand between the ceramic disks and black soot, and here he felt something metal, and smooth. He gave it a couple yanks, and sure enough, out came a singed Crow, complete with feathers and beak, but all of its robotic innards were plain as day. Held the burnt cybercreature in one hand, and dropped it to the ground. His partner walked over to it, still filming. “What the fuck?!” he stated as he quickly ended filming and turned his camera off.

RV Guy descended from the pole and stoof over the robotic mess at his feet.

“Delete the video” RV Guy said.

Van Guy stammered a bit. “Ok, ya. Done. Erased.”

RV Guy took the crowbot back to the SUV, and opened the back doors before placing it into a plastic bag. The two remained relatively speechless as they pulled out their clipboards, and began to write. As they did so, a single yellow butterfly floated into the vehicle and perched on the headrest in the backseat.

“Goddam, fucking butterfly in here” Van Guy said, breaking the silence.

“Leave it” RV Guy stated plainly as he continued his report.

Van Guy took a deep breath, and asked the first question “So, flying robot birds. Those aren’t that common ya?”

“Nope” RV Guy said.

“So you think this was a governmental attack? Like, who’s got a Crowbot?”

“Quicksilver could afford em.”RV Guy said

“hmmm. ya but why would they attack their own substation!” Van Guy responded

“Maybe they were protecting it” RV Guy had pulled his phone out of his pocket. He scrolled through some emails then a video loaded on the screen. It was from a surveillance camera, taken at the substation.

“See, the gophers start attacking it first. And they weren’t wandering around and just stumbled upon a nice wire to chomp on. They look like they’re on a mission. Look at this guy! He’s determined to get that open. It’s almost like…” Rv Guy paused.

“You think they’re robots?” Van Guy asked.

“They’re something. They’re not normal gophers” RV Guy said.

He pulled out the little bag from his pocket and inspected the metal piece closely.

“This is a transponder. “ RV Guy said

“But that’s only good for verbal communications right?” Van Guy stated

“Yep”

“So wait. You think that someone was telling those Gophers what to do?”

“We’ve got a fried up Crowbot in the trunk. At this point, I think anything is possible. “RV Guy stated plainly as he started up the SUV.

He told me to go to the hospital to get a proper cast. The fracture clinic there had closed for the day so I went to the ER, where they wrapped me up and took another x-ray. I saw an orthopedic specialist this morning who set my fracture (ideally I should have come in immediately after the incident and had it set then), after which they took another set of x-rays to check if the setting worked. The prognosis is good. I didn't pay a cent in all this, as I'm covered under the University Health Insurance Plan, which all international students in Ontario get, as the Ontario Health Insurance Plan only covers residents, anything under OHIP is covered with UHIP.
