Marry Me
This fic is for @tarlos-spain for the 911 Valentines 2022 exchange!
This fic incorporates a headcanon I had: TK and Carlos don’t always spend their days off together. But who they hang out with and why might be a bit surprising. (and yes, the movie thing is because I recently rewatched 1x02 and decided that someone needs to sit Carlos down and make him watch movies.)
***
“Are you sure?” Carlos holds up the coveted keys to the Camaro. “Take it!”
“No. I’ll just get an uber, it’s not a big deal.”  TK snoops at the snacks that Carlos had placed around the island. “Ohhh. These are my favorite. Why don’t you ever make these for me?” TK asks, grabbing one and popping it in his mouth.
“You’re welcome to stay and watch the movie with us.” Carlos says. “but since you’ve decided to run off somewhere and spend another day off with someone who isn’t me, you don’t get the snacks,” Carlos teases as he grabs a couple plates and sets them on the table by the couch.
This wasn’t a new thing by any means.  Nancy had taken it upon herself to expand Carlos’ horizons, when it came to movies and pop culture. Every time they had a couple days off that lined up, Nancy would come over and make Carlos watch the newest hit movie.  Meanwhile, TK would disappear for a few hours. But he was always back on time and usually in the same condition he left in (except that one time he returned with a cut on his hand), so Carlos tried not to worry.
TK smiles fondly. “Nah. You and Nancy hang. I like that my two closest friends are good friends.  Anyway, I better go. I’ll be back before dinner.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to take the Camaro?” Carlos offers once more. “I know you love driving it.”
“No, my ride is out front already. Thanks though.” TK runs a hand along Carlos’ cheek and leans in for a kiss.  “Bye, babe.” He opens the front door, nearly bumping into Nancy. “Hi Nancy, Bye Nancy!”
“Bye, TK!” wide-eyed, Nancy glances between Carlos, still standing in the middle of the living room and TK, sprinting down the hall.
“Hey, Nance.”
“He’s not staying? Again?” Nancy wanders in and sets her purse on the chair, followed by her coat.
“I guess not.  What can I get you to drink?” Carlos asks.
“Whatever you’re having.” Nancy settles in on the couch and grabs the remote as Carlos brings over a couple bottles of water and a soda.  “Where does he go? You’ve told him he can stay right?” she asks, opening Netflix and scrolling through the titles.
“I don’t know. He won’t talk about it.” Carlos shrugs. “I mean, I’m not actually worried about it. I don’t think it’s anything nefarious,” he chuckles.  “And yeah, I mean, it’s his place, of course he knows he can stay.  I just- He probably doesn’t want to see a movie everyone else but me has seen fifty times.”
Nancy laughs. “It took me long enough to get you to watch Birdbox.  Anyway, continuing your movie education, at Mateo’s suggestion, I’ve narrowed it down to two. Both superhero movies.  So now the big question is, DC or Marvel?”
Carlos sighs, actually unsure of the difference and shrugs. “Marvel?”
“Good choice. Between you and me, Avengers are way better than Justice League.” Carlos shrugs again as Nancy laughs and starts their movie.
***
TK lets out a frustrated huff as he tries to remember what ingredients to use and how much to put in the mixing bowl.
“And he still doesn’t know you’re here?” Andrea says softly, from her spot behind TK. “No, more flour. A lot more.”
TK shakes his head and sighs, “You know, an actual recipe would be really helpful.” TK mutters.  “I’m really not good at this. Carlos always says baking is about precision.”
“And that’s why I haven’t taught him how to make this yet.”
“He doesn’t know how to make his favorite dessert?”
“No.  His abuelita… Me… And now you.” Andrea puts a hand on his shoulder and pats it reassuringly. “Three of the most important people in his life.” She stares at TK for a moment. “Maybe after next week the two of you can spend some time in the kitchen, cooking together. You’ll be able to teach him.”
“I’m making one meal,” TK points out. “Let’s not get carried away.”  At Andrea’s instruction, he adds some sugar and vanilla to his bowl of ingredients and mixes carefully before dumping everything into a pan and placing it in the oven.  He checks on the food simmering on the stove and gives it a stir, before sticking a spoon in the pot and tasting it.  He makes a face and reaches for the salt, adding a generous amount and giving it another stir and another taste.
Andrea makes her way to the kitchen table and sits, and after a moment TK pulls off his apron and joins her, propping his chin in his hand and his elbow on the table.
“Why am I doing this again?”
Andrea shrugs. “Because it’s hard.  And it’s out of your comfort zone.  And you want him to see you put effort into this?”
“Oh. Right.” TK sits for a few minutes in silence before Andrea herds him back to the stove.
***
“TK?” Carlos calls as he unlocks the door and lets himself into the loft. He knew his shift had gone a little long, but it was still early; TK shouldn’t be in bed yet.
It’s dark and he pauses, his hand hovering near the light switch.  He notices the flickering of the battery-operated candles on the table and the smell of something delicious fills the air. “TK?” He calls again, dropping his bag near the door.
“Hey, baby, welcome home.” TK emerges from the bedroom and Carlos gives him a quick once-over.  He was dressed nicely, in jeans and a button-down, instead of his usual hoodie and sweats. He makes his way over and gives Carlos a quick kiss on the cheek.
Carlos sniffs again and his mouth waters. “Is my mother here?” he hisses.
“No? Should she be?” TK hurries into the kitchen and stirs something on the stove while Carlos watches curiously from the middle of the room.
“Did she drop off food for us?” he asks, narrowing his eyes at TK.
“No? Was she supposed to?” TK bites his lip and braces his forearms on the counter. Carlos stares at him and sniffs again.
“That smells amazing! Did you make-”
“Yes. It’s your favorite! Now, go change! It’s almost ready.”
“Why-”
TK grins and grabs their plates from the cabinet, “Go change!” Carlos hesitates for only a second before scurrying into the bedroom.
Ten minutes later, a freshly-showered Carlos joins TK in the kitchen. He sidles up to TK from behind and wraps his arms around the smaller man’s waist. “Can I help?”
“Nope. All done.  Go have a seat and I’ll bring it over.” TK promises.  Carlos notices the dessert cooling on the counter by the sink and moves towards it. It’s still hot, and he breaks off a chunk, watching the steam rise.
“That’s for later,” TK chastises playfully. Carlos rolls his eyes, TK is always nosing around in the kitchen while he tries to cook, stealing nibbles of this or that.  He pops the piece into his mouth and chews thoughtfully.
“That’s really good,” he mumbles as TK leads him to the table.  He drops into his seat and TK brings over their plates, setting one down in front of Carlos and the other at his own seat.  He turns to head back into the kitchen and Carlos catches his arm. “Thank you.”
TK shrugs and he slides his arm from Carlos’ grip. “Don’t thank me yet. You haven’t even tasted it.” He gets two glasses of ice water and brings them to the table, watching expectantly as Carlos takes his first bite.
“This is amazing!” Carlos manages, his mouth still half-full.  “When did you learn this? Why? How?”
TK takes a bite of his own. “Your mom showed me.  I wanted to do something for you.”
“Well, thank you, TK. This is perfect!  When did you talk to my mother?” Carlos asks shoveling another forkful into his mouth.
“Last weekend. I’ve been going out to the ranch on my days off.  Your mom has been teaching me a few things.” TK admits slowly. He shifts anxiously in his chair.  The first hurdle was done, now that Carlos had tasted his cooking and deemed it successful. But he still had a little more planned for tonight.
“Well, she’s done a much better job than I ever could.” Carlos says softly. “Did she give you the recipe for dessert?  It’s a secret family thing and she never…” He stops as the realization hits. “Oh my God.”
“Okay, Carlos… Don’t freak out.”
“Too late for that. Is this… Are you…” he starts two sentences and abandons them both, staring at his boyfriend.
“Uh… Yeah. I mean...” TK slips a hand into his pocket and pulls out the small box, his fingers worrying over the soft velvet.  “That was the plan.  Look, Carlos, I-”
“Yes!” Carlos exclaims.
“But I didn’t even get to ask you!” TK pouts playfully.
“I’m sorry.” Carlos scoots back from the table and makes grabby hands at TK. “Come on then.”
TK sighs and stands, crossing the few steps to his boyfriend. “Carlos, I love you and I-”
“ Again, yes!”
“Carlos!”
“I’m sorry. You look nervous. I thought it would take a little pressure off if you knew I would say yes. Go ahead.”
TK makes a face and turns his back to Carlos to hide his smile. “Now I don’t know if I wanna.”
Carlos laughs and reaches for TK.  He wraps his arms around TK’s waist and pulls him down onto his lap, burying his face in TK’s neck.  Carlos kisses him softly then rests his head on TK’s shoulder, peering up at him.
“You ruined it!” TK says. Still giddy, Carlos just laughs. “I’m mad!”
“You are not. Annoyed, maybe. But definitely not mad. In fact, you-”
“Marry me?” TK carefully opens the box and removes the ring.  “I want to be annoyed by you forever.” Still perched on Carlos’ lap, TK slips the ring on Carlos’ left hand, then shifts sideways so he can cup Carlos’ face in his hands.
“Still yes. Always yes.” Carlos says, leaning in for a kiss.

I can’t decide if I want TK to propose to Carlos or Carlos to propose to TK. Because on one hand I want TK to have the chance to “make up for” the disaster that was Alex and I think allowing him to be the one to do it would show that Carlos isn’t always the one to make the first move as it were and that TK is as invested in this relationship as Carlos is (because we know he is but he doesn’t always show it) But I can also see Carlos doing this incredibly romantic grand (but private) gesture with all the feels. Or trying to do a grand gesture but having something get in the way and him just blurting it out and it being adorkable. And now I’m wallowing in a pool of fluff. Someone send help.

3. and 6. for 911 and 911 lonestar? Thanks
911: Maddie/Chimney, they are so adorkable together and I can't wait to see more of them this coming season and how they'll deal with Maddie's PPD. Buck/Abby, they had good chemistry and the relationship was beneficial to both of them, but relationships with such a large age gap (regardless of the gender of parties involved) is always creepy to me, I've always felt like Abby was just going through a midlife crisis, and Buck didn't deserve to be left like that.
911 Lonestar: Carlos/TK, obviously they are ridiculously cute, they're so supportive of each other and affectionate and they communicate pretty well, and I ship them so hard if anything ever happens to them heads are gonna roll. Owen/Gwyneth, they were toxic af, were super selfish and never at any point put their son first like they were claiming to do, I have no idea what the writers were thinking with that baby plotline, and even though the baby turned out not to be Owen's I hope the baby makes an appearance because I am so worried about that poor innocent baby, all around it was just a huge trainwreck and I hated watching them together.
