Cottage Hills: The Island of Sun, Part IV
Day Four: Island of Memories
Today, after their raucous evening, Kai and Popuri have an early breakfast, and Kai decides that perhaps it's time to pay Dr Diggs a visit at the museum for a more cerebral and educational day out.
Tumblr media
They head on over to the Simbayang Museum of Maritime Antiquities, and are greeted by Dr Diggs.
Diggs:
"Kai! Popuri! How wonderful that you've come! We've got some new exhibits and artefacts since the last time you were here, Kai, which I think might interest you both! Come on in!"
Inside, the relatively small, single storey building is crammed with all kinds of paintings, murals and carvings on the walls, glass displays full of artefacts, and large sculptures behind velvet ropes. Having seen nothing like it, Popuri is amazed by the museum's collection.
Tumblr media
Kai:
"Well, Dr, you've certainly been busy! This place is overflowing!"
Diggs:
"Thank you! We've been working hard, and indeed, some of the newest relics we've managed to uncover are on display here as well. Would you like to see them?"
Dr Diggs leads them over to a few glass cases, with all manner of historical artefacts within, including some ceramics and what look to be jewellery.
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"Dr what are all these? Who made these artefacts?"
Diggs:
"Well, we know that about a thousand years ago, a civilization known as the Pranajaya Empire lived on the island and ruled over much of the region. They had up till fairly recently been considered myth, so consequently, we don't know too much of them yet, but over the years, we've learnt more about their way of life here on the island and about their role in this region's history."
He leads them over to an intricately carved stone statue of a female figure. She has a kind, peaceful expression, one hand holding a flower.
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"Wow, what a beautiful sculpture. Who is she?"
Diggs:
"This is what we think is a statue of a legendary founder of the Pranajaya, Princess Ityawet. Not much is known about her but legends say that she came out of the sea, with a strange flower in hand, and led the people to peace and prosperity. It is said that under her rule, the Pranajaya became a prosperous and powerful maritime society, who traded widely in the region."
Popuri:
"What happened to them? Did they leave any other clues of their civilization?"
Diggs:
"Well, that's the thing, we don't know fully yet why their civilization collapsed. Some evidence points to some sort of power struggle after Ityawet's death, and the ensuing civil war destabilised their society, and their cities were abandoned. Of course, there's still lots of research to be done, but thanks to Professor Kawanto, we've since uncovered some large ruins on the other side of the island, deep in the jungle, that shed some new light on the Pranajaya and their cities."
Dr Diggs leads them over to a wall near the entrance, and shows them some photos hanging there, under a plaque dedicated to Prof. Widyana Kawanto. The photos are old images of a large ancient ruin soaring over the jungle, with the signature of the professor.
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"Who is this Professor Kawanto? Is he still around?"
Dr Diggs looks down solemnly as Kai gently places his hand on the plaque.
Kai:
"She...she was my mother...she built this museum, and she's the one who discovered the ruins of the great Pranajaya civilization."
Tumblr media
Diggs:
"Yes. Kai's mother, Dr Widyana Kawanto, is a reknowned academic, environmentalist and archaeologist, and just the latest in a long line of Kawantos who have made extraordinary contributions to the island. Thanks to her, progress in the field has leaped ahead decades. Prof Widyana uncovered the ruins of what we call the Temple of the Monkey King. I was there the day these pictures were taken. I took them! I was just her student back then, she was a fiercely intelligent and driven woman. I was lucky to have been her student. We are honoured to continue the work she started."
Tumblr media
Diggs:
"Well ahem, I have to run now, but why don't you two come see the ruins tomorrow with me? I'm sure you'll love to see it! "
They agree to meet him tomorrow and they leave the museum. On the way home, they walk in silence. Kai seems very deep in thought, with a faraway look on his face. Back home, after a quiet dinner, Popuri finds Kai looking up at some pictures on the wall. She gently places her arms on Kai's shoulders.
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"You must miss her alot. She seems like a wonderful mother."
Kai:
"She was... She was kind, and funny. And strong. I never knew my father. He died before I was born, and my mother raised me on her own. She loved this island. She would tell me stories and legends about our past, and she taught me to love and respect the natural beauty of our island, and our way of life. She advocated for the environment, and for the conservation of important heritage and archaeological sites around the world.... but twelve years ago...she... "
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"I'm sorry, its ok if you don't want to talk about it."
Kai:
"... It's alright. She disappeared twelve years ago. No one knows what happened to her. But back then, when some big hotel guy wanted to come build a resort here on our sacred mountain and open the island to tourism, my mother opposed it and confronted him. He soon left, and construction stopped. Everyone celebrated and thought it was over. My mother then went on an expedition to find a new set of ruins from the air. She never came back, and the plane was never found. The next thing we knew, the hotel was built, and things have never been the same since."
Tumblr media
Popuri:
"You think that the hotel's owner had something to do with it?"
Kai:
"No one knows really. That's just what the locals believe. They've cared for me ever since. They're all like family to me. Maybe... Maybe she's still out there somewhere. I travel everywhere to try and find clues of her... But nothing...coming back here to this house has been hard... I guess there's too many memories here."
Popuri:
"Maybe it's time to make new memories."
Kai smiles sadly. He caresses Popuri's hand, and says its time for bed.

The Freedom of Expression Ep 38 - Discovery of new geoglyph in the Nazca lines.
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru with this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome....
J: Ask me about it..haha
K: Wha..?
J: Ask me about it.
K: .....Today..
J: Haha, no no no. Hellooo? *points at  Tokyo Sports hoodie that he is wearing* Look, look, look, everyone. Tokyo Sports have...actually, where are you selling this again?
T: Don Quijote.
J: Its a collaboration with Don Quijote.
T: Yeah.
J: Have a look. *Shows off hoodie* 'UFO caught in power lines'. I don't know why this scene has been chosen for it though. I've put it on straight away.
K: I've got one too. Its cute, right?
J: It is cute!
T: Oh, that makes me happy.
J: Anyone can get this if they go to Don Quijote?
T: Yep.
J: By the way, how much is it?
T: Its about ¥2000.
J: This is..
K: Its good.
J: Yeah it is.
K: Its good for this time of year.
J: This is great for just going to the convenience store.
Kami: Its cheap.
K: But isn't ¥2000 a bit expensive for Kami?
T: haha
Kami: Well, its cheap.
J: Honestly, its a bit loose in the body.
K: You don't have to say that.
J: Hahaha
T: No matter when it gets dirty..
J: Its okay? kinda thing?
K: On the otherhand, its easy to wear.
J: Easy to wear! Thats it. Easy to wear.
K: Yeh yeh.
J: Ah, its thin so its easy to wear, haha.
K: Great for when its just a bit chilly outside.
J: Just right for that.
T: Exactly.
J: So by all means, everyone, this is currently on sale at Don Quijote.
T: Thank you very much.
J: This is a super hot item.
T: Thank you.
K: Speaking of Tokyo Sports news, this week's story is..
T: Yeah. A new geoglyph in the Nazca lines has been discovered.
J: I've been waiting for this!
T: Another mystery to unfold.
J: Yeh, a mystery.
T: On the 16th of this month, Peru's Ministry of Culture announced that a group of archaeologists doing maintenance work in an area of the Nazca lines discovered a new geoglyph measuring at 37 meters. Its from an earlier era than any of the other geoglyphs that we know of. It hasn't been visible up to now because it was drawn on the side of a steep slope. But it has become possibe to get footage of it using drones etc, which means more discoveries like this might also be made from now on.
J: Its amazing, isn't it?
T: Did you see it?
J, K: Yeh yeh.
J: It looks like a cat.
K: The moment I saw it, I thought it was a fake.
J: Hahaha. Out of all the topics so far, your enthusiasm for this one is kinda different, right?
T: Its crazy, right? A cat...
J: It looks like that giraffe that Tasai drew recently.
K: haha, yeh.
J: I wondered if Tasai had drawn it.
T: Yeh, like presenting my own work.
J: Yeh yeh yeh. But then you probably didn't have time to go to Peru and do a 37 meter drawing.
T: Well, yeah. Looking at the design of the cat, Im not sure whether ancient people drew this.
J: What do you think, Kaoru?
K: Well, when I first saw it, I thought it was fake news.
J, T: Hahaha
J: It looks like it, doesn't it? It looks like a joke.
T: For sure.
K: It makes you think, 'Eh? Really??'
J: Yeah. Maybe they left it there as a joke.
T: The other designs in the Nazca lines, the birds and things, are drawn very precisely, aren't they? This one has a different touch to it.
K: This one is older than those though, isn't it?
T: Yeah, its older.
K: Maybe it all started from there.
J: Yeah. Its like the very beginning of the Nazca lines. It could've been like a practice attempt.
T: So like, it started from there, and became many different designs?
J: Yeah, that kind of thing, maybe?
T: I wonder.
J: But its said the Nazca lines have loads of mysteries about them. These days, in terms of technicalties, you would draw a small image first, and while looking at that, like when making a map, go equally to various places and leave stakes in the ground. And then gradually make it bigger. If you increase the size by the same amount, no matter what the angle, it eventually turns into that kind of shape, right? But to make that kinda of image back then, with all the obstacles that they faced, there is the theory that it could have been aliens. Its quite a deep rooted theory. What is Tokyo Sports' theory on this?
T: Well, there is the aliens theory, but also former AKB member, Kojima Haruna....Kojiharu, right? She drew a picture of a cat at some event back in 2015, or was it a tiger? It was a tiger. It looks exactly the same as this.
J: Hahaha
K: *looks at pic on Tasai's phone* Well...
Kami: You're talking about Kojiharu's drawing?
T: Yeah, like did she draw this?
Kami: Oh right. Um, I also..A long time ago, I drew a picture at Tottori sand dunes with a friend.
J, K, T: Ehh?
Kami: It was like a male symbol..I competed with my friend over the size.
J: Kami, how did you draw it, this male symbol?
Kami: Well, I got a tree, and trees are kind of thick, right. I found a really thick one, and went back and forward with it many times. We were saying to each other, like 'Mine is bigger'. Stupid, right? Haha.
T: Kami's type of fun is interesting.
Kami: Yeah, we went to Tottori sand dunes, it was fun though. I wouldn't be allowed to draw it now though, that type of thing.
J: Ah, is it banned there?
Kami: Well, these days its all about public decency. Maybe that was my fault.
K: Definitely.
J: Yeah. Its due to your excesses, Kami, now it has become like this.
Kami: Yes.
J: Stop it!
Kami: Its like as a god, I was the creator of these new rules.
J: Haha
T: I see.
J: Yeh, I see.
Kami: Yes.
K: He puts it very well.
J: He does. So, what do you think about this Kojiharu theory?
T: Well, we got a good response from her. She said something like 'Tokyo Sports, stop being stupid', haha.
K: Tokyo Sports gets about doesn't it?
J: Its great isn't it? haha. Imagine Kojiharu speaking out to them about the Nazca lines.
T: Also, the Major League player, the pitcher Maeda Kenta (Maeken), there has been talk that it looks like it was drawn by him.
K: Basically, the picture is not very good then.
J: Haha. So, Tokyo Sport's conclusion is that this geoglyph is old, but in terms of skill, its not that good?
T: Yeah. Well, because aliens did it to help them relax.
K: Ahh, I see.
J: Like, a drunk alien drew it or something?
T: Yeh yeh.
J: Ah, there are many possibilities.
K: Its great that there are still others that havn't been discovered yet.
J: Yeah.
Kami: Um, will it be said that I drew it if they find a vulgar drawing?
K, J, T: Hahaha
J: Hang on, you're  a god, so it wouldn't be strange to say you were alive when the Nazca lines were made, right?
Kami: Right.
T: It wouldn't be that odd to find one or two vulgar ones would it?
J: Well, as I said earlier, they could start with a small drawing, and then gradually extend it, but the question is what did they make these for? I can understand that kind of big bird being related to a religious custom or something, but I'm interested in what this funny cat was made for.
T: Yeah
K: Well, I don't mean big ones, but they are a lot of small ones like this, done by people a long time ago, right?
T: Ah yeh.
J: Ah, I see. Yeh yeh.
T: It wasn't that unusual for ancient peope to draw random doodles, like symbols or religious images and stuff.
J: Ah, yeh. Its interesting.
Kami: Joe, I really understand what you said about expanding the drawing equally bit by bit.
J: Oh really?
Kami: Yeh, at Tottori sand dunes, the picture I drew was only circles and a line, but i made it bigger in the same way.
J: Oh right, yeh.
Kami: Yeah, I did.
J: So does that mean you really knew how to draw?
Kami: No, I didn't know how to at all. It just came naturally.
J: Naturally?
Kami: Yes.
T: Incredible.
J: Of couse, you are a god. I somehow wish you'd drawn something more decent. Haha
Kami: Well, I have a knack for that type of thing.
J: Haha, do you? Like, this is you?
Kami: Yes. Im just a vulgar guy.
J: Ah, you're vulgar? A vulgar god.
Kami: Yes.
K: Well, anyway, it will be interesting if they find any more of these.
J: Yeh, im looking forward to that.
T: I wonder if there are any more?
J: Oh, there will be more.
T: Hmm, yeh.
J: Well, I don't remember exactly, but in the place where the Nazca lines are, there is a characteristic type if soil quality, like if it rains, or is windy, the geoglyphs don't disappear.
K: Well, yeah.
J: If you drew a picture in regular ground, it would disappear when it rained, right? So, did these ancient people knew about the soil quality in this area, and draw them there deliberately to preserve them, or did they draw them in lots of different places, and only these ones have survived? Im not an expert, so I don't know, but it makes you imagine things when you see them.
K: Yeah.
J: Isn't it great?
T: There must be more..
J: Yeah.
T: Mysteries in this world.
J: Yes, I think so.
Kami: Isn't there any theory about them drawing graffiti with friends?
J: Well, there may be that kind of theory.
T: Yeah.
Kami: Is there?
K: We just don't know what happened.
J: Right, we don't know. Yeh.
T: That cat does just look like a prank.
J: Yeah.
T: There is no message in it.
J: No, there isn't. Haha.
K: How did they draw it though?
J: As for that Tokyo Sports Tshirt, I wonder if anyone holds copyright for the Nazca lines images?
K: I don't know, haha.
T: How about that? Hmm.
K: I don't know.
J: If its a press photo though, you can use it anywhere as long as you credit it, right?
K: Well, in that case, Tasai's drawing is better..
J: Oh, that?!
T: Hahaha
J: Lets make it!
K: Hahaha
J: How about that with 'The Freedom of Expression'.
T: That sounds good.
J: Kaoru did not seem to agree, haha.
K: No, lets just think about it a little more.
J: Yes, ok.
K: Ok, well lets finish here. Please subscribe. Thank you very much.

Archaeological Adventures in Egypt
Hello! I am Dr. Lisa Saladino Haney, Assistant Curator at Carnegie Museum of Natural History and resident Egyptologist. An Egyptologist is someone who studies the history, material culture, architecture, religion, and writing of the ancient Egyptians – one of the ancient cultural groups living in Africa’s Nile Valley. Learning about ancient cultures helps us to better understand the world today and to appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of people who lived thousands of years ago. Archaeology is one technique that allows us to interact with and study the past and there are hundreds of archaeological sites and projects throughout the Nile Valley that constantly add to our understanding of what life was like.
Tumblr media
Trying to determine some of my favorite archaeological sites from my travels in Egypt turned out to be an impossible task! Please join me on this photo exploration of a few of the many interesting archaeological sites in Egypt and learn where you can find more information about active archaeological excavations and other projects going on in those areas.
Saqqara
Saqqara is an important cemetery site associated with the ancient Egyptian capital city of Memphis, near modern Cairo. The cemeteries at Saqqara contain a number of tombs, both royal and private, including the famous Step Pyramid of the Third Dynasty Egyptian king, Djoser (ca. 2630-2611 BCE). The earliest burials at the site date to the creation of the ancient Egyptian state and it remained an important site through the Graeco-Roman Period.
Royal Tombs: The Step Pyramid of Djoser
The Step Pyramid of Djoser marks an important step in the development of the pyramid-shaped royal tomb. The complex was designed by the famous royal architect Imhotep, who would later become deified in ancient Egypt. You can see a bronze statue of Imhotep in Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt. A 14-year long restoration project at the site was just completed in 2020 which included strengthening the overall integrity of the structure by filling in gaps in its six rectangular mastabas as well work on the interior burial chamber and passages of the pyramid.
Check out some pictures from my visit to the Step Pyramid in 2011, early on in the restoration process, or, for a gallery of photos and more on the newly completed restoration, click here.

Old Kingdom Mastabas: Tombs of Kagemni and Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep
The Old Kingdom (ca. 2649-2150 BCE) mastabas at Saqqara are some of the most beautifully preserved and decorated tombs. Here are two of my favorites from my last visit. The tomb of Kagemni is the largest mastaba in the cemetery associated with the reign of the Sixth Dynasty king Teti (ca. 2323-2150 BCE). Kagemni was a Vizier, the highest position in the royal administration.
Tumblr media
The tomb of Niankhkhnum and Khnumhoptep, also known as the tomb of the two brothers, dates to the late Fifth Dynasty and contains a number of exceptional scenes that underscore the closeness of the two men, both of whom served as overseers of the royal manicurists. Archaeologists uncovered a number of blocks from the tomb’s entrance repurposed in the nearby causeway of the pyramid complex of the late Fifth Dynasty king Unas (ca. 2353-2323 BCE). Thanks to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, you can now go on a virtual tour of the tomb!
Tumblr media
Here you see the names of the two tomb owners, Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep on a stone doorway inside their tomb as well the exterior of the mastaba (photos by author).

Beni Hasan
Beni Hasan is a cemetery site located in Middle Egypt, near the modern city of Minya, that was important during Egypt’s Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030-1640 BCE). During that time some of the most elite Egyptians were buried on the escarpment (desert cliff) with one of the most beautiful views of Nile Valley around! For more on excavations at Beni Hasan in the early 1900s visit the Griffith Institute and for a virtual tour of the tomb of Kheti at Beni Hasan visit the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Karnak
Karnak temple complex is one of the largest religious sites in the world. The first temple at the site was built during the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030-1640 BCE) and the complex grew in size and complexity over time. The main temple at Karnak is dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun-Re, but there are smaller temples dedicated to Mut, Khonsu, and others. See if you can spot the snoozing pups in the pics below!
There are a number of ongoing excavations at Karnak that you can explore to learn more about the site. Check out this amazing minicourse on the Karnak Mut Precinct available on YouTube with Dr. Betsy Bryan, Alexander Badawy Chair of Egyptian Art and Archaeology and Director of Johns Hopkins’ excavations at the Mut Precinct.

Hello, can I have match up for any jjba parts? I'm female, bisexual, ESFP, 5'5, shoulders length blonde hair, gray eyes. I was a bit chubby at the past, it caused a serious eating disorder and now I spend a lot of time exercising. My resting bitch face look intimidating, but actually I'm pretty nice. I'm chemistry major and my hobby is cooking. I don't like to get attached to people, but once I got attached, I'll ride or die about it. I can't stand bullies and I like caring and calm people
Matchup
TW // eating disorder is mentioned
Thank you for your request, hun! You sound like a perfect person to be friends with, and also I wish I knew how to cook... ehehe nevermind, enjoy your matchup! <3
Phantom Blood and Stardust Crusaders matchup
WORD COUNT: 1k
My first matchup choice for you is...
Jonathan Joestar!
Tumblr media
The height difference is the cutest thing. He's 6'5, your face is right at his chest, and he loves when you bury your face there.
Jonathan probably has a soft spot for cute blondes with clear eyes. He just finds these colors so pure, he can't hold back from loving them.
Your body shape doesn't affect this gentleman's love for you. He likes covering you in kisses anyway.
If you happen to show him old photos of yours, he'll still tell you that you were absolutely beautiful.
In case you needed to talk about your past, or in case something was hurting you, don't be afraid to tell Jonathan. If necessary, he'll stay up whole nights to listen to you.
Afterwards, he'll also make sure you sleep some extra hours, because you haven't slept to talk together.
If he has nothing urgent to do, he'll probably join you and cuddle with you during these extra hours.
Jonathan probably exercises and works out a lot, so if you're okay with it, he'll happily join you, so you can exercise and enjoy your time together at the same time.
He just knows what your usual expression is, he won't be bothered by it and will tell people that you're a sweetheart. If he hears someone talking shit about your expression, he'll grow really angry. Those people don't know you like he does. How dare they?
Jonathan is actually interested in chemistry. Yours are two different passions, since he's an archaeologist, but he finds amazing the passion that you put in your studies, so he'd like to participate in your interests, too.
If you happen to cook for Jonathan, he'll immediately melt. Since he isn't really used to be the one who cooks - he always had someone to do it for him -, he'll start practising, and if you wanted to be the one to teach him, he wouldn't complain at all.
If you need to take your time, before you fully get affectionate to him, he's a gentleman, he'll never force you to do anything you don't feel comfortable with.
When you finally feel comfortable with being affectionate and clingy with him, he'll also become shamelessly cheesy. If it annoys you, just tell him, he knows how to be a good boyfriend without exaggerating, he just likes seeing you blushing.
Did you say bullies? Jonathan can't stand them as much as you do. He'll break their arms. With kindness. He's a gentleman.
He is so caring, that he takes care of what may annoy you before it gets to actually annoy you. He's a calm person, but sometimes you might see him fight against Dio.
He'll always keep you away from Dio. He knows how much danger revolves around him.
My second matchup choice for you is...
Muhammad Avdol!
Tumblr media
He likes the fact that your hair and eyes are the opposite. His hair and eyes are dark, and yours are as clear as the water.
As a magician, he likes symbolisms, and this means a lot for him, almost as if you could complete each other.
He probably knows much more about you than you would expect.
Avdol is a great observer, every little detail of you and of what you do would give him a hint about your past. He probably found out about your past eating disorder because of little habits of yours.
He cares a lot about your health. He's okay with the fact that you exercise, but he'll always keep an open eye on you, to make sure you don't exaggerate or overwork yourself.
Your serious expression can't hide anything to the eyes of a magician. As soon as he knows you, Avdol reads the truth in those eyes of yours.
He probably knows how to let you express the best of yourself, and he'll never let anyone tell you anything bad about your attitude. Behind that expression there's an amazing person.
You two are interested in each other's experience about completely different topics. Chemistry and fortune tellers don't get along really well, since science and magic are opposites.
But it's for this exact reason, that Avdol's always gonna use this to learn more about your interests and at the same time, spend more time in your company.
He really wants to help. He just really wants to help, when you decide to cook something. But he chooses to use Magician's Red too much, and always sets the kitchen on fire.
"Jotaro...? Yes, hi, Avdol here. Can you tell your uncle we need help? Yes, I set the kitchen on fire again. We need to repair the furniture. I might consider starting to pay him, this is like a weekly appointment... almost daily. Thank you, Jotaro. Bye."
You love him for this, too. He sometimes is so serious - in a sweet way - and calm that you can barely see him make mistakes or go crazy. By now, burning up the kitchen is an habit.
He's fine with everything you want, in terms of being clingy or attached. Avdol just wants you to be comfortable, he'll adapt to your needs without any problem.
Once you feel comfortable with having closer moments with him, he'll enjoy wrapping you in his red robe while he's wearing it. Avdol feels like he can protect you better, this way.
He's the perfect example of a caring and calm person. He's always keeping an eye on you to make sure nothing bad happens, but he's usually quiet about it, not the type of boyfriend who forces you to quit doing something.

Hot - VERY hot - take on The Mummy: Evelyn is an amazing linguist and archaeologist and Egyptologist, but not a very good librarian. She puts Socrates next to Seth but Tutmosis (closer to Seth theme wise) on a different bookshelf. What kind of classification system is she using!?
Anon:
WWOOOOOOO THIS TAKE IS SCALDING.
But what’s funny about that is I somewhat agree because literally she looks off into the distance for T when she’s in the Ss SO T WOULD NATURALLY BE SOMEWHERE NEARBY EVELYN MY GOD.
That library is clearly not using the Dewey Decimal System, and I’d imagine it’s lazy writing and gives them an excuse to have her reach across the shelves resulting in a catastrophe - as someone who works in a library, I have nearly done that very thing.
If you’re interested in some hot takes of the Mummy from a real Egyptologist, check out vintage youtuber Rachel Maksy’s video here. She watches the movie with Dr. Colleen Darnell, an extraordinary Egyptologist, who wears vintage clothing every day. Her instagram is resplendent with gorgeous photos of her and her husband in vintage attire at various sites in Egypt.
Thanks for the hot take!

Brighter Than The Sun
Chapter 2: The First Day
“G-Gon?” Killua’s mouth fell open in surprise. “What are you doing here? How did you find my room?” Gon looked so excited and he had no idea why.
“Killua!! I didn’t know this was your room! I just got home and wanted to meet my roommate!”
“Home? Wait, does that mean-” realization hit him suddenly.  “Are you in 405A??”
“Yes! We’re roommates!”
Killua stood in stunned silence for a moment, unsure of how to feel. Of all the people on campus to have as his roommate, it turned out to be Gon, the bubbly and strange boy he had ironically just been thinking about.
“Can I see your room? I peeked in earlier when I arrived but it was empty.”
“Uh, sure” he stepped to the side, letting him into the room. “I haven’t really done anything in here yet. I got in right before orientation, so I didn’t have time to start unpacking. When I finally got back after the library I put some stuff away, but I’ve mostly just been hanging out.” Killua blushed, suddenly hyper aware of the chocolate robot wrappers on his desk, and his haphazardly arranged belongings. His suitcase was lying open on the floor beside his dresser, stacks of books were scattered across the desk and floor.
“I think it looks great already! I haven’t had the chance to unpack or decorate at all yet.  Is this your favorite band?” He nodded to the crooked poster on the wall above the bed.
“One of my favorites, yeah. It’s the one playing right now.” He motioned to the bluetooth speaker sitting on the windowsill.
Gon walked over, sat on his bed, and began bobbing his head to the music.
“They’re really good! You’ve got nice taste in music.”
Killua chuckled, “This is only one song! I like a lot of different stuff, there’s a lot to listen to.”
“Well, you’ve got the whole school year to show me!”
His smile was warm and real and it shook Killua up quite a bit. No one had ever really shown interest in the things he enjoyed before, but here was someone he had just met, genuinely excited to be listening to underground rock with him.
They hung out while Killua finished unpacking his suitcase and getting settled. After that, Gon wandered back to his own room to start his unpacking and when he did Killua followed and this time Gon played the music. His taste was a little weird, and mostly pop, but Killua didn’t mind. He was enjoying the view as Gon danced around his room, tossing clothes into his dresser and arranging trinkets on his desk.When he went to the bathroom to unpack his toiletries, Killua stood over the desk, checking out all of the small momentos Gon felt were important enough to bring with him to college. Among them was a few seashells, a green ring, and a fishing hook in a small glass jar. A photo in a blue frame near the corner of the desk caught his eye, and he leaned in for a closer look. Gon, wearing a graduation cap and gown, was facing the camera, eyes squinted with a beaming smile on his face. One arm held his diploma in the air, while the other was wrapped around a teary eyed woman. Her head came up to his shoulder, and where her hazel eyes and orange hair bore no resemblance to him, her warm and genuine smile was a spitting image. She must be-
“That’s my Aunt Mito!” Gon chirped, eyes lighting up as he walked over to where Killua was standing. “She burst into tears right after this picture was taken. I know she was proud and happy for me, but I’m pretty sure she was really sad that day. Mostly worried about the future, I think.” His face fell a bit. “She knows I want to follow in my dad’s footsteps, and since he’s so busy and always overseas I think she’s worried I’ll just leave and never come back.”
“What does your dad do?”
“He’s an archaeologist.”
“Wow, that’s so cool!”
“Yeah, that’s why I want to see for myself! If his job is so amazing that it was worth missing out on my life and Mito-san’s life, then I want to know what it’s like!”
Killua felt kind of bad hearing that. He knew what it was like to have a dad ditch you for work, but at the same time, his parents were also very involved with his life. Suffocatingly so. They had appearances to uphold, afterall. His parents were far from perfect and even farther from pleasant, but he still couldn’t imagine one or both of them just leaving and not returning. Plus, what would Gon do if he finally got the job and it wasn’t as amazing as his dad made it seem? Killua knew from experience that hope usually just led to disappointment.
He pulled out the desk chair and swung his leg over it, nestling backwards in the seat, his arms folded across the top rail of the chair, and his chin resting on top of them. “So what’s your dad like?”
Gon sat on his bed across from Killua and was lost in thought for a moment. “Well, I’ve only really seen him a few times in my life. . His name is Ging. Ging Freecs. He’s pretty rough around the edges, but well respected. He’s famous in parts of the world for his finds and research. I don’t know much else, except a few stories Mito-san has told me from when they were kids on Whale Island together. She says I’m a lot like him though. ” He shrugged, “By her tone of voice,  I can never tell if she means that as a good or bad thing.”
Killua surprised himself when he spoke, “Whether you're like Ging or not, and whether that’s good or bad doesn't really matter. You’re you. And for what it’s worth, I think you’re pretty cool.”
They locked eyes and a huge smile broke out on Gon’s face.
“Thanks, Killua. I think you’re really cool too! I’m glad we’re roommates!”
Killua just grumbled a bit in response, his mouth set in an awkward smile. Gon could be so embarrassing sometimes.
They slipped into a comfortable silence after that, music still playing softly through the room as Gon continued organizing his stuff and Killua scrolled on his phone. After a while Gon let out a huge yawn and decided it was time to call it a night. They were both mostly unpacked, and even though classes didn’t start for two more days, he wanted to get up early to explore the campus some more. Yawning himself, Killua followed suit and once behind his closed door, stripped to his boxers and flopped onto the bed. Staring up at the ceiling, his mind began to drift.
It had been a hell of a day. Aside from his text letting them know he arrived safely, he hadn’t spoken to his parents at all. Where this wasn’t too different from the norm--they were usually too tied up with work and social ladder climbing to give him much attention--it was still nice to have space from them and his life back home. He’d been so excited for the freedom college was going to provide him. Freedom from the claustrophobic walls of the Zoldyck estate, from his siblings, and best of all, freedom from his parent’s cold judgement. He was finally able to live his life without them breathing down his neck and criticizing his every move. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life, but he was so happy to finally have the space to explore and figure it all out.
The only thing he was really worried about when he left for college was who his roommate would be, and he was pretty relieved to have Gon. They’d barely known each other a day, but he had the feeling that living with him was going to be a good time. He’d never met someone so… open and warm. His joy was almost contagious, it was a nice contrast and welcome change from his boarding school roommates and family. For the first time in a long time, he fell asleep excited for what the future would hold.
~~~~~~~~
The next two days were a blur of course catalogues and video games with his roommate, and before he knew it, Gon found himself on the way to his first college class, Biology 101. He was practically skipping down the brick walkway and, thanks to all of his previous exploring, he was able to find the classroom with no issue.  He snagged a spot towards the front by a window, and as he sat, noticed a neatly bound packet lying face down on the desk. He was curious, but resisted the urge to flip it over, choosing instead to check out his surroundings. There were a few other students scattered at the tables around the room, and a short woman with green hair stood at the front. He watched as she neatly wrote in neat and swoopy cursive across the white board.
Dr. C. Yorkshire
Adjunct Professor
Biology 101
Fall Term
Class A
So she was the professor, Dr. Cheadle. She looked put together and kind, but he’d be lying if he said her calm demeanor was enough to soothe his nerves. School was never really his thing, he much preferred to be outside learning with his hands and on his feet, and his grades usually reflected the trouble he had with studying. His teachers in the past had always been nice enough, but he hated disappointing them with his test scores, and he wanted college to be different. He wanted to put his best foot forward with his new life and really prove himself. He was determined to give it his all.
A few more people shuffled in and filled the open desks, and when the wall clock marked the top of the hour, the professor faced the class and cleared her throat.
“Good morning everyone, and welcome to Biology 101. I’m Dr. Cheadle Yorkshire and I’ll be your professor. As you should know, this class is accompanied by a mandatory lab that will meet once a week. You’ll all be partnered off and expected to work together for the lab as well as in class activities.” Her eyes scanned the room, mouth set in a stern smile. “To kick things off, I’d like everyone to turn over the packet in front of you. This is a copy of your class syllabus, I took the liberty of binding them for you, as you’ll be referencing it throughout the entire semester.  It contains all of the information you’ll need to be successful in this class, including classroom policies, expectations, assignments, required reading, my office hours, and more!”
Gon held the syllabus in his hand and was staring at it like it was made of gold. Everything he needed to do well in this class? It was like he’d been handed a treasure.
“Now, I’ll call out the lab pairings, and you can find your partner and arrange your seating accordingly, then we can begin our first activity!”
When Gon’s name was finally called along with his partner’s, he was giddy with anticipation and just as he stood to scan the crowd for his partner, a blue satchel dropped down on the table and a tall boy sunk down into the seat next to his. His blonde hair framed his face and hung just above his shoulders, his smile was tight but genuine as he held a hand out to Gon.
“I’m Kurapika, nice to meet you, partner.”
Gon shook it and chirped back “I’m Gon! Nice to meet you too!”
They sat in silence while Cheadle finished calling out the rest of the pairs. When everyone was settled, she addressed the class.
 “Alright, now that everybody is paired off, we can begin today’s activity! In order to get to know your syllabus and your lab partner, I’ve created a scavenger hunt! Simply peruse your syllabus and use what you read to answer the questions on this handout!” She waved a stack of papers in the air and with a proud smile on her face, began handing them out. “You can begin as soon as you get your worksheet and you are dismissed whenever you finish!”
When their worksheets were placed in front of them, Kurapika turned in his chair to face Gon.
“Well, I suppose we better get started, eh? We can both read through the syllabus and then answer the questions together, does that sound good to you?”
“Sure!” Gon nodded in response and they got started. Gon was a little overwhelmed with the amount of information on the syllabus. It was pretty stressful seeing an entire semester of work listed out like that. He was excited for the lab though, all of those assignments seemed pretty hands on and a few of them were even supposed to be done outside. Maybe this class wouldn’t be so bad afterall. After a few minutes, they began answering the questions together. It wasn’t too tough to find the answers, and with two people it went by pretty quickly. Gon didn’t want the whole class to pass without getting to know his lab partner though, so he tried to strike up a conversation between questions.
“So, Kurapika, what’s your major? Are you a freshman here too?”
Kurapika didn’t look up from the worksheet when he answered. “I’m not a freshman, but I am new. I’m a sophomore and I transferred here this year.I’m double majoring in Psychology and Criminal Justice.” He glanced up and over at Gon. “What about you? Have you decided on a major yet?”
“I have! Well, kinda. I’m considering Anthropology or maybe  Environmental Biology. Still trying to figure out which would be best, but I don’t think I could handle double majoring like you. Your majors sound really great! What do you want to do with your degree?”
“I want to become a detective, I’m still deciding between public and private.” He scribbled something on his paper. “The answer to number 12 is ‘Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm’ by the way. Three more and we’re finished.”
Gon was hastily writing in the answer when Kurapika asked,
“What do you want to do when you get your degree?”
“I want to become an archaeologist, like my dad! Or possibly a similar job within the field.” He perked up when he noticed that Kurapika had put down his worksheet and turned his focus to their conversation instead.
“So you're a transfer student, how do you like it here so far? Where did you transfer from, and what made you leave?”
 “Woah Gon, you’ve almost got more questions than the assignment.” Kurapika chuckled but still pressed on. “So far it’s fine, but I’ve only been here for 3 days so we’ll see how it goes. I transferred here from Meteor City Community College, but I never really wanted to go there in the first place. This was my first choice school, but I wasn’t able to move here last year because of some family stuff. This year I was able to, so I did. And how are you liking it here? What made you choose YNU?”
“It’s my dad’s alma mater, so it was an easy choice. So far I’m really liking it! I was a little nervous before I got here, but everything has been pretty awesome. I’ve gotten to know and love the campus already, and I’ve got a great roommate too! Plus, my first class is going well! And that’s what I was the most nervous about.”
“It’s good that you like your roommate. That can cause a lot of trouble for some. It definitely did at my last school, so that’s actually what I was most worried about here.”
“I’m sorry you had trouble last year, but is your new roommate nice I hope?”
“Well, I actually lucked out and got a suite to myself. I requested one when I filled out the transfer paperwork, and told them about my last experience. I wasn't counting on it to work out in my favor too much, but it did.”
“I’m glad it did!”
“And I’m glad you’re feeling better about your classes now that you’ve got one under your belt.” He slid his worksheet over with a pale slender hand,  the last three answers were written out neatly.
Gon quickly jotted them down and slid the paper back to Kurapika. “Thank you!”
“No problem, it was a team effort after all.” He smiled as he slung his satchel over his shoulder and stood up to turn in his paper, Gon grabbed his backpack and followed behind him.
After they handed her the worksheets, Dr. Yorkshire complimented their effort and teamwork, and dismissed them for the day. They were in the hallway and Kurapika was waving goodbye when Gon spoke again.
“Kurapika, do you wanna grab lunch sometime? I know we’re just lab partners, but you seem really cool and I’d like to be friends!”
Kurapika looked puzzled for a moment but his voice was soft and sincere when he spoke. “I’d like that, Gon.”
With that, they exchanged numbers and went their separate ways.
The rest of the day breezed by, and Gon was pretty much on cloud 9. He was excited about his classes, and even more excited about the people he met in each one. He had lunch scheduled with Kurapika for later on that week, and he decided to check out some of the clubs a few of his new friends suggested to him throughout the week as well. It was going to be a great year! He texted Killua and they decided to meet up for dinner in the cafeteria, so he headed that way after his last class.
When he arrived, he scanned the room until a crop of silver hair caught his eye at a small table by the dessert station in the far corner. He made his way over and plopped into the seat across from Killua, who was surrounded by plates of different desserts.
“Gon, the dessert bar is amazing. You’ve gotta try the chocolate cake, and there’s cookies too!”
“It looks great! I’m gonna go grab some, and maybe some regular food too!” He stuck his tongue out teasingly, Killua just rolled his eyes in response.
“Have you been here long?”
“Nah, I got here a few minutes before you. I just headed straight for the dessert.”
Gon laughed out loud. Dessert for dinner, Mito would’ve killed him. College really was a different world.  “Do you want me to grab something else for you while I’m up?”
“Eh. I’m fine for now, might grab some pizza or something in a bit.”
Gon nodded and left to make his plate. When he returned, Killua was scrolling on his phone, fork in hand hanging lazily at his mouth.
His stomach growled and he quickly twirled a bite of spaghetti around his fork. The day was so eventful he hadn’t even realized he was hungry.
“So, how were your classes? Did you like your professors?” he asked, shoving the huge bite of pasta into his mouth.
Killua put his phone down and draped his arm over the back of his chair. “They all seem pretty boring, but I’m mostly getting gen ed classes out of the way for now, until I decide what I wanna major in, so that’s probably why. I don’t even remember any of the professors’ names, so that answers that question I guess,” He shoveled another bite of cake into his mouth, “What about you?”
“They all seemed nice enough, but I think I liked Professor Satotz in Anthropology the best. He seems interesting, so I’m excited to see how that class goes. Did you make any new friends?”
Killua quirked an eyebrow at him. “Uh, no. Did you?”
“I did! A few people, and I actually have plans to hang out with one of them! I’m gonna check out some clubs here too, I can definitely make some new friends there! And you’ve gotta come with me Killua! We can check them out together!” As he spoke he was practically buzzing with excitement.
“What clubs are you going to?” Killua asked, his curiosity piqued.
“Well, There’s a bunch of them to choose from, but the Great Outdoors Club, the GSA, and the Ultimate Frisbee Club were all recommended to me, so I’m gonna start with them I think.”
“GSA?”
“It stands for Gay Straight Alliance.”
Killua almost choked on his last bite of cake. “O-oh. Right. Why are you going to that one? Are you... gay?”
Gon’s face scrunched up a bit, his gaze suddenly intense.
“Not that there’s anything wrong with that if you are!” Killua backpedaled. “Just asking!”
“Yeah, I’m just thinking about it. I guess I don't know? I was gonna check it out ‘cause I liked the idea of an alliance, and I wanted to go to show support I guess, but hey, maybe the club will help me figure it out!”
Killua’s cheeks were tinged pink. “You don’t know? Haven’t you ever gone on a date or to a school dance or something before?”
“Well, I’ve gone on dates with girls before, never with any boys though.” He rested his chin on his hand. “To be honest, I’m just not sure. I guess now I’m pretty excited to see what I learn from this club!” His eyes squinted up in a bright smile.
“You should come with me when I go! It’s for everyone to come together, so I don’t think it even matters if you’re gay or not anyways.”
“Yeah, maybe, we’ll see.” He awkwardly rubbed at the back of his neck. “ I’m gonna go grab some food, be right back.” He stacked his dirty plates and quickly shuffled off.
Gon leaned back in his chair and rubbed his full belly. He looked around the cafeteria, already starting to recognize people from his classes amongst the crowds at tables and in line at food stations. His first day was really amazing and if this was what the year was going to be like, he was so ready for it.
~~~~~~~~
After wandering between the different food stations for a few minutes, Killua finally returned to the table with a plate of spaghetti and some soda. The food on campus was actually pretty good, so that was a plus. It was almost good enough to distract him from the nagging questions that the mention of the GSA brought up. Almost.
He really hadn’t thought too much about his own sexuality, or sexuality in general. He’d never even gone out with anyone before. Well, there was the one time he agreed to go to the winter formal with a girl he knew, but that night was a disaster and he only went because his brother had been giving him shit about his social life.
It’s not like he never found anyone attractive before. But now that he thought about it, most of the time when someone in a crowd caught his eye, they happened to be a boy. Like at orientation just a few days ago... But what did that say about his sexuality? How did anyone actually know if they were gay or straight or whatever? And what would you even do with that information once you managed to figure it out?
“Killua?”
“Eh?” The sound of Gon’s voice snapped him back to reality and when he looked up he was met with a pair of honey eyes burning into him.
“What?” He gulped. Had Gon been sitting this close to him the whole time?
“I asked if you were ready to go.”
“Oh, yeah, sure.”
They grabbed their bags and began the trek back to their dorm. The cool night air was a welcome relief from the blush that spread across his face and up his neck.

I was tagged by @it-may-be-dull-but-im-determined, @twelvemonkeyswere and @albatrossisland, thank you all!!
1. When you were little, what did you think you’d be when you grew up? Did your reality (or your future plans) come close to that?
I wanted to be an Archaeologist, and Egyptologist to be precise. I was fascinated by everything old Egypt and Mummies and Pyramids. I wanted to read hieroglyphs and go to digs and adventures. I pretty much believed it would be like The Mummy, but my friend's older sister was an Archaeologist and she convinced me there was no future in that.
2. Do you think of yourself as an urban, suburban, or rural person?
Urban, I'm a city girl. I grew up in Madrid and I consider that the lower limit on how big a city needs to be for me to live in. If it has fewer than 5 million people, it's too small. I need public transport because I never learned to drive and a million options on entertainment so I don't get bored. I usually tell my friends that I didn't move to England, I moved to London and it's the only city I'm going to live in.
3. Do you decorate with carefully matched pieces, or are you eclectic?
Decorate? I don't do that. I still have all the things my (bff) landlady left in the house and apart from putting up shelves for all my books and comics and DVD and sticking a poster of The Crow in my room, I have changed nothing in a year and half. We'll see what happens if and when I have my own place.
4. Are you the photographer of your group/family, or do you always want to be in the photos?
I used to be a photographer. Another of those weir phases I went through in my late teen and early twenties. I decided I could be a photographer (I have no visual mind whatsoever) and spent a lot of money and time on photography courses. Turns out I can take technically good pictures, I also studied make-up once upon a time, and I am amazing with lighting. I can't take a picture for shit. I am also not very photogenic, but I like being in the pictures, so I'd say is a weird combination of both were I take pictures all the time and then shove the camera into someone's hands so I can be in the pictures as well.
5. Do your thoughts come to you in words (like conversations with yourself) or pictures (abstract, ideas, visions)?’
In words, all the time. My mind is a constant stream of me talking to myself or me writing fic in my head. Even when I read I can't conjure up images, its one of the reasons I turned to comic.
6. Do you have changing weather seasons where you live, or a relatively continuous climate? Do you wish you lived in the opposite?
We have grey, wet winter. And grey wet summer. And in between, there are greyer and wetter spring and fall. Well, now with climate change there is occasional sunny summer and freezing winter. I used to live in a place with seasons, now it's always too hot or not cold enough in there.
7. When you don’t have obligations, what is your ideal, natural time to get up? To go to bed?
I wake up with the sun, mostly. I'm usually up around 8 during the weekend and that's because I force myself to stay in bed. My cat (the pest) makes sure I am awake early enough to pay attention to him otherwise. I aim for being in bed at midnight, that doesn't mean I won't stay reading for a while.
8. Do you cook? Bake? Or do you prefer to have someone else to that?
I am a very good cook and have always loved spending time in the kitchen. Even my lazy dishes, or the things I prepare when I don't feel like cooking, are made from scratch and on the elaborate side of the scale. I also love baking, but I don't usually do it because I live alone and I'd end up eating everything by myself and I'm already fat enough.
9. Which way do you put your toilet paper? Up and over so it hangs in front? Or dangling below? Does it bother you if it’s done the other way?
When I remember and I don't just stand the new roll on top of the empty on… hanging in front. It annoys me the other way.
10. If you had a lot of money, what would be the first selfish, frivolous thing you would do with it? (Not for other people, not for practical purposes, but fun and just because you want to.)
Not sure how frivolous it would be, but I'd want to buy a house in each of the cities I love to travel to. I'd get one in London, one in Madrid and one in Tokyo. And then I'd go on a diving trip to all the best spots in the world.
I think most of the people in my timeline have already done it or have been already tagged, so if you haven’t, consider yourself tagged now!

KHD 2019 Final Words for the Season
Dear All,
Excuse the hiatus - many new and exciting things happened when we hit the long road to Luxor! Several days with our excellent host Omer and dragging Tish around Karnak, various museums, Hatshepsut's temple and of course the valley of the kings, in 45 degree heat. I love my job's perks! Everything about Southern Egypt is 'more', for want of a better term, than northern Egypt: it's hotter, louder, more crowded (in Luxor, anyway), larger monuments, more extravagantly archaeological...and yes I know the pyramids are in Cairo which is northern, but Luxor and area are absolutely heaving with World Heritage sites that make any serious archaeologist lose it slightly (and even non-serious ones like me). After the dust had settled, however, and I had slogged back to London, moved house, got ill, went to Spain and Paris (a varied life...!) I did sit down and have a think about the season.
I have already described to you what there was on the dig; the finds, the amazing crew, the selfless dedication of absolutely everyone, the heat, the inconvenience, the chaos and the order (thank you, Jo!) and the camaraderie that made the entire project worthwhile. What it is harder to write about is what there was not; there was no Tass. None of us have previously had any experience of an excavation without him. Even if he wasn't there in person, there would be daily peremptory email demands for information, or long lists of instructions, exhortations and rantings on what we were doing wrong and why. There is not one of us who did not quietly miss his energy, his enthusiasm, his strength of personality, his humour, and the customary butt-waggling dance - the tshick tshack tshock - he used to do the the hysterical amusement of every Egyptian within miles.
Tumblr media
We tried not to talk about Tass too often but the minute someone said how they missed him or something he would have done or said, it would be met with a chorus of "I was just thinking about that". The fact that he will never be there to give us haircuts, drop fag ash all over the place and leave a trail of chaos in his wake is very sad. The world became a less warm, less friendly and less kind place when he left us. But we shouldn't dwell on this.
Yes, Tass could have done so much had he been allowed more time, but as the last photo I saw of him shows, he had reached such contentment, looking out over a country he loved, having triumphed at the very apex of his career for which he had laboured and struggled for so long.
Tumblr media
The ancient Egyptians with which Tass was so smitten are often accused of being obsessed with death - the country is, after all, littered with monuments to the deceased - but that's not quite right. The Egyptians were obsessed with life, whether it took place here or in the hereafter, and the fact that they could arrange for the eternal care of their immortal souls means that they could focus more on living. Here. Now. In blissful confidence. So by all means raise a glass to Tass, and remember that people like him are best commemorated by living well. Living here and now. And doing something you love the best you can. I will do everything in my power to keep his dreams alive, starting with KHD 2020. I hope you can join me.
Cheers to all, and thank you for reading,
Dr. Lawrence Owens & the KHD crew
