Tochni (Greek: Τόχνη; Turkish: Dohni), a quaint village situated in the Larnaca District of Cyprus.
Source - Facebook LittleManTravels photo album
Tumblr media
Before the year 1974, Tochni boasted a diverse populace comprising both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots.
The village centre features the remains of a Latin church, standing above the Orthodox church of St Constantine and Helena. The current church was rebuilt on the original site, connected by a bridge, believed to be established by St Helena upon her return from the Holy Land with a fragment of the True Cross.

And of course, because this is Cyprus - you will always find these, no matter which traditional village you may choose to visit:

An authentic Cypriot stay in Tochni
An authentic Cypriot stay in Tochni
Cyprus has countless unique, charming villages and it is definitely worth spending a day or two away from the coast to experience them. We had a wonderful stay at Cyprus Villages Agrotourism in Tochni, one of the oldest villages in Cyprus. Tochni is one of many ‘agrotourism’ villages in Cyprus, where original, traditional Cypriot stone houses are restored and preserved. Our stay gave us a…

Raea + Alex's Wedding in Stop-Motion | Tochni, Cyprus from Bayly & Moore on Vimeo.
Raea and Alex got hitched in a wonderfully traditional ceremony (that quickly turned into a day-long wild party) in the middle of the village of Tochni, on Cyprus' magical south coast. Picture this; an ancient Cypriot village with stone villas clinging to the hillside, stone church in the valley and a village square with lights, long tables, incredible food being cooked over open coals, and a party to die for! So many things made this day unbelievably special - all of the preparation and transformation that went into turning the village square into R+A's wedding venue, the pure joy of everyone involved who'd travelled so far, the crazy surroundings and how the locals totally adopted everyone, and one totally magical first-look in a wheat field down a dusty road on the edge of town... Now, if only you could taste the food, hear the music, drink the wine and smell the air, then you'd start to understand why this is one of the greats. ('Pathos Pathos', Kishi Bashi)

Review of 2019 Season
Summary
A mixed season in terms of the cricket. We played 11 matches; Won two, Drawn six, Lost three. Sadly missed Bill Hill through injury and Pacer Scholfield for half of the season while he got used to his new hip. Great to see some debutant Bottoms over the season and we hope that they will play some more this year.
We have now played in a total of 18 countries and on 44 different grounds. Hopefully, we have the time and energy to play for a bit longer…..
Lynchmere                                                                             Drawn
A fully timed game at Lynchmere. Lynchmere batted first and declared on 170 for 5 after 44 overs. Wickets for Adam Saward (2), and one each for Martin Waterhouse, Dick White and debutant Bottom, Joe Cuthbert, playing in his only game of the season. Rishi bowled very well with 8 maidens and unlucky not to get a wicket. In response, Bottoms were 126 for 7 at the close after 38 overs. Dick White scored 28, Joe Cuthbert, 22, Andrew Mackenzie,16, (his highest score of the season) and James Blake,15.
Harry Baldwins                                                                        Won
A timed game at Lurgashall with 70 overs playable. The Baldwins batted first and declared after 33 overs on 181 for 4. Wickets for Jack Naylor (playing in his only game of the season) and one each for James Maxwell and Rishi.  Bottoms reached the total within 31 overs with strong performances from Rishi (37 not out), Dick White (36 not out), Jack Naylor (35 not out) Jack Naylor (35 not out) and Craig Moore (31)
White Hunters                                                                          Drawn
A 70 over game on the picturesque ground under the Downs at Parham House. We were put into bat and scored 203 for 6 after 36 overs. Highlights were 51 not out from Dick White and 41 from debutant Hugh Fox. In an innings reminiscent of the great Geoffrey Boycott, Opener David Sewell scored a classy 16 runs…..in 54 mins! The White Hunters scored 126 in their 34 overs but held on for a draw with the loss of just nine wickets. Wickets for James Maxwell (3), Tom Twyford (2), Dick White (2) and one each for Rishi and Martin Waterhouse.
Gentlemen of Bedales                                                               Drawn
A 70 over game at Lurgashall. Bedales batted first, scoring 199 for 8 in 35 overs. Two wickets each for Rishi and Hugh Fox and one each for Dick White, Adam Saward and Callan Greene.  Bottoms fell just short of the target in our 35 overs on 187 for 8. Batting highlights were 46 from Dick White, 42 from Adam Saward and 25 from Stuart Macnaghten.
Mad Hatters                                                            Lost
A 70 over game at Elsted. Bottoms batted first, scoring 189 for 7 in 36 overs. Runs from Rishi (35 not out), Oliver Woolley (27), Caspar Weston (25) and Adam Saward (21) Mad Hatters responded well and with determination, scoring 190 for 4 in just over 32 overs. Wickets for Rishi (2) and one each for Callan Greene and Richard Reincke.
Arundel Grasshoppers                                          Drawn
A 70 over game at Lurgashall. The Grasshoppers batted first and were 158 for 3 after 35 overs. Wickets were from Callan Greene (2) and Dick White (1). Bottoms responded slowly and ended our 35 overs on 120 for 5.Batting highlights were James Maxwell (32 not out) and David Stoop (26) making a welcome appearance for the Bottoms.
Wimbledon Wombats           .                               Won
A 70 over game at Lurgashall. Wombats batted first and scored 191for 9 in 37 overs. Wickets for Dick White (3), James Maxwell (2), and one each for Adam Saward, Pacer Scholfield (his first appearance for the season and with his new hip), Richard Reincke and Charlie Meade-King. Bottoms got the required runs in the final over with the loss of just 2 wickets. Highlights of the batting were innings from Julian Wilkinson ( 37 not out), Dick White (36 not out), Jonathan Roy (35 not out), and Pacer Scholfield (32)
Hambledon Invitational                                       Drawn
A 70 over game at Lurgashall. Hambledon batted first scoring 236 for 6 after 30 overs. Wickets for Richard Reincke (2)and one wicket for each of Rishi, Adam Saward, Pacer Scholfield and James Maxwell. Bottoms responded with 159 for 8 in our 39 overs. Batting highlights were James Maxwell (42 not out), Rishi Deb (35 not out), Pacer Scholfield ( 26), Martin Waterhouse (20) and James Blake (17)
West Meon                                                              Lost
A 70 over game at Lurgashall. West Meon batted first and retired on 200 for 4 after 30 overs. Dick White and Richard Reincke both got two wickets. (The opposition, Rishi’s other team, are clearly used to Rishi’s bowling!) Bottoms were all out for 123 after 35 overs. Batting highlights Dick White (33) and David Vernon (31) playing in his pre-tour warm-up
Opisthia stin Kypros / Popolar Kibrista
38 of us spent a long weekend in Cyprus, staying in the quaint Tochni village, playing cricket on the beautiful Happy Valley ground and sampling the delights of various mountain and beach restaurants. Thankfully, we were also able to watch some of the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup showing at the beach bar situated close to the ground.
Sri Lanka Lions                                 Drawn
A 60 over game at Happy Valley. The Sri Lankan Lions, one of the 13+ teams in Cyprus, all largely South Asian, kindly allowed the notion of a “timed” game and elected to bat first. They scored 182 for 6 in 30 overs. Bowling highlights were two wickets each for Pacer Scholfield and Rishi and one for Dick White. Other highlights were a terrific catch by Nick Hardie and a very expensive 17 runs over off the bowling of David Vernon. Bottoms responded with a score of 96 for 5 in our 30 overs. Batting highlights were runs from James Maxwell (30), Dick White (20) and Pacer Scholfield (17). Both teams were happy – The Lions felt they had won and we knew it was a Draw!
Amdocs                                             Thrashed!
A 60 over game at Happy Valley. Amdocs batted first and scored 145 for 9 in their 30 overs. Great bowling from Pacer Scholfield (4 wickets), Rishi (3 wickets) and a wicket each for James Maxwell and Dick White all gave us some confidence that we may have a chance. Any such confidence was shortlived as only Caspar showed any resistance to their bowling with 17 not out. Extras of 13 was the next highest score. We were skittled out for 44, probably our lowest score ever!

Discover these hidden Cyprus gems
Discover these hidden Cyprus gems
We all like a spot of adventure and discovery, don't we? Hidden treasure, hidden gems, they captivate us and set our imagination on fire.
These Cyprus hidden gems are not for everybody, they are reserved exclusively for you and a select few others. These are sights that tend to escape the attention of the masses and their reward to you increases by virtue of that exclusivity!
Larnaca Salt Lakes
dimitrisvetsikas1969 / Pixabay
They really are a sight to behold and yet, most people will pass them by without a thought! How can it be that something of such beauty is not better known? If you visit Cyprus between November and March you are almost certain to see a range of migratory birds. They will have journeyed here specifically for the water. The flamingoes are here to devour the shrimp that emerge from the otherwise hard baked salt encrusted bed when it becomes saturated by rainfall. In the background is the Hale Sultan Teke Mosque, worthy of a visit in and of itself. Get lost in nature a few minutes outside the city of Larnaca.
Stavrovouni Monastery
Stavrovouni Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery which stands on the top of a mountain called Stavrovouni in Cyprus.
The monastery claims to be one of the few places where one can see a piece of the Holy Cross. Stavrovouni Monastery was founded by Saint Helena (Saint Constantine's mother) in around 327–329 BCE making it one of the oldest monasteries in the world.
Stavrovouni is accessible to wheelchair users, though it does require some preplanning to arrange a successful visit. If you are thinking of visiting in or with a wheelchair, please contact us for further details.
As the earliest documented monastery on the island, Stavrovouni has a written history stretching back to the 4th century.
The views from the upper courtyard are spectacular on a clear day. the religious icons and the collected relgious artefacts are typically ornate.
It is worth noting that women are not allowed to enter the main part of the monastery. Women may enter a chapel and the gift shop in the car park at the top of the hill. The rule is aimed at ensuring the monks remain isolated in their strict way of life.
Kalavassos Dam
A dam may seem an unusual choice as a hidden gem until you think of the vital role that water plays on Cyprus. It is a beautiful spot for a walk in amongst nature.
Kalavassos dam overflowed on Friday 22 March 2019, becoming the 11th dam to do so this winter.
The dam is 57 metres high, 2,000 metres long and has a capacity of 17 million cubic metres (mcm). It was built as part of the Vasiliko-Pentaschino irrigation scheme to irrigate 980 hectares of land between Vasiliko and Maroni and belonging to the villages of Kalavassos, Maroni, Zyigi, Psematismenos, Mari and Tochni.
The last time it overflowed was in 2012.
After abundant rains this winter, Cyprus’ dams in March 2019 were 83% full compared to only 26.7% on the same date last year. Update: In April 2019 all of the Cyprus dams were reported to be at full capacity.
Maroni benefits by being part of this agricultural project which delivers water to farmer's fields allowing for crop growing, mainly salad crops, that otherwise could not be grown. Tomatoes form the main crop for many of Maroni's farmers.
Kolossi Castle
As a Crusader stronghold Kolossi literally embodies history! Sadly the interior of Kolossi Castle is not accessible to wheelchair users.
The castle sits on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 kilometres west of Limassol. It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from the local sugarcane, one of Cyprus's main exports in the period.
The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by the Frankish military, when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Hospitaller Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
The present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers under the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac, whose coat-of-arms can be seen carved into the castle's walls.
Owing to rivalry among the factions in the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus, the castle was taken by the Knights Templar in 1306, but returned to the Hospitallers in 1313 following the abolition of the Templars.
The castle today consists of a single three-storey keep which still gives a good idea of how the hospitallers must have lived - with plenty of fireplaces to keep them warm in winter, and window seats to allow them to benefit from cool breezes in summer.  There is also an attached rectangular enclosure or bailey about 30 by 40 metres (98 by 131 ft).
The area is particularly known for its sweet wine, Commandaria. At the wedding banquet after King Richard the Lionheart's marriage to Berengaria of Navarre at nearby Limassol, he allegedly declared it to be the "wine of kings and the king of wines." It has been produced in the region for millennia, and is thought to be the oldest continually-produced and named wine in the world, known for centuries as "Commandaria" after the Templars' Grand Commandery there.
Look out for our upcoming post about Commandaria. We test and assess them to save you time.
