My first night in La Rochelle was nice. I ate a nice dinner with my host family and then went to sleep. My bed was really comfy, and my room was nice. I woke up quite refreshed!
Today, I woke up and had breakfast with my host mom, who is super sweet and nice. Afterwards, we went to a flea market where her husband has a stand (he is also really nice and funny). We walked around the flea market for a while and I bought a Harry Potter Slytherin USB (worth it!).
After the flea market, we had a bite to eat and then we went to centre ville or city center. Here my host mom dropped me off as I joined with some of my classmates and my professor, and we walked around La Rochelle for a couple of hours. Since my professor does this program year after year, he is a great tour guide.
After walking around for a while, my host mom picked me back up and we went home. She also showed me how to use the bus and what stops I need to know in order to get to the school and to centre ville.
After another great dinner, I got ready for my first day of class.

The Roaring Twenties in La Rochelle
On Wednesday 19th February 2020 five students from the Master's in History at La Rochelle University had organised a screening of archive footage with live music, followed by two lectures on the theme of La Rochelle during the 1920s. The purpose of the event was to understand how the city had been affected between the end of the First World War and the Great Depression.
The footage had been supplied by a local association named Fonds Audiovisuel de Recherches or FAR. The mission of this association created in 1999 is to collect and digitise home movies and photographs in order to highlight the audiovisual heritage of the region. For this event the FAR had provided images from the 1920s and early 1930s that showed the city or the surrounding area and its inhabitants during various moments of their social life such as a procession with a vicar and people in dark clothes, a dance, people walking down the streets, young girls dancing the Charleston, men on the beach.
These images were accompanied by the music of The Peas, the university student band that performed songs and instrumental pieces from this era, including the famous jazz composition The Charleston by James P. Johnson.

Then Jean-Sébastien Noël, lecturer in contemporary history, explained what the distinctive features of the Roaring Twenties were, especially concerning fashion, music, and dance, and how they could have reached La Rochelle.
The second lecture by the historian Bruno Marnot, specialist in maritime history, focused on the development of industrial fishing in La Rochelle at the end of the 1920s. While he talked, another film was screening. It showed the different steps, equipment, and techniques required for industrial fishing. Unlike the first film, this one was the result of a request from a fishing union to promote the profession. Therefore the images were better centred and less blurry, probably because the footage had been shot with a more professional camera and preserved in better conditions. Intertitles had also been added between sequences to comment on the images.
Even if the subject of fishing does not captivate me, it was quite interesting to see places I know well used as they were first intended and not repurposed like they are today. For example the fishery and its warehouses are now a cultural centre with an exhibition area and shops selling local products, while the fish market had been transformed into a theatre.

Day 26 Today was the time to spend in Bordeaux. Unfortunately the rainy weather has returned but that is just an issue to contend with. In the centre and eastern half of France snow blizzards have struck which of course has concerned us but it has been suggested that we will be all right. We started the day with a quick tour of the bowels” of the Chateaux de Curtin where we have stayed. The lovely lady Regine gave us the “cooks” tour. The chateaux has been in her husbands family since 1830 although elements of the buildings date back to the 11th century. The wine is bottled, labelled and distributed from the property surrounding the chateaux. To give a wine the chateaux name on the label it has to be all “done” on the property. It was interesting and of course bought a few bottles for our travels. The wine made here is for the local market only. Broadly wine provides in excess of 14.5 billion euros yearly to the Bordeaux region. Apart from the wine the city has a rich history of a number of philosophers, revolutionaries and writers like Voltaire and Victor Hugo. Name plates are scattered through the city where they resided. During WW2 Bordeaux became the capital of France. The river Garonne on which the city is located is bound by 3 bridges and we chose to park on the eastern side to avoid the predictable chaos in the city. The original bridge (Pont de Pierre) has 13 arches, one for each letter of Napoleons name. The latest bridge is Europe’s largest “lift bridge”, the centre section weighing 2600 tons. We “clocked” another 13 kilometres of walking today. The city has a modern tram system which appears to be very efficient. We did ride it a couple of times to avoid the rain. We did the city tour on the “petite” train which was well worth the cost and had been recommended by a number of folk. It is an “audio” tour which provides a clear and timely explanation of where you are and what you see. Built in 2016 we visited the Cite du Vin or the house of wine. The exhibit covers the culture and history of wine throughout the world. There were some “Aussie” examples. It’s not in the heart of town as you will see from the photo the design would be a little out of place of this beautiful city with it’s parks and wide streets and amazing architecture. Of course like every city it has it’s old city with the narrow streets. Bordeaux has it’s dark past. The ”fruits” of the wine funded a period where the city was a major part of the slave trade only surpassed by London. Following the revolution for about a year a guillotine was installed in one of the main squares and about 250 public executions took place. I have given Janice the name “N1” or “Navigator One”, her navigation skills have improved remarkably and has been able to make the task of travelling through this country and cities that much easier. Tomorrow we are off to La Rochelle, further up the coast.
