Fanfiction tropes ranked - Tag game
Hello everyone! I saw this on yt and I thought it would be fun to this with the mutuals on tumblr <3 You can find the site where I did this, here. You can either post a screen or write it down if you can’t. However you want!
I’m going to tag some people that I know will like this but of course anyone is free to tag along!
Disclaimer: I’m going to add some notes after the screenshot to explain some things.
Tumblr media
I’ve mainly based my ranking of the fics of that trope I’ve read.
The “YESS” category:
Historical AU --> I love them! Of any kind, for every character/pair/fandom. If written well they are a dream for me to read.
Hurt Comfort ---> I’ve put this here because for me it’s the sum of angst and fluff and we all know I love to read it. Generally speaking, if the two are well balanced I like to read it in whatever mood I’m in.
ABO--> I feel like this refers more to the werewolf pack thing. I’m not really into that nor into furry but I do have a slight daddy kink. Especially if I’m reading Alfie or Bane fics.
Time Loop --> Time travels AU are my favorite kind of fics. Nothing more to say.
Enemies to lovers and friends to lovers ---> if played well and we, as the reader, can feel their relationship evolving up to the point of love before they actually admit it to themself or the other is *chefskiss* I think about Klaroline and I can’t help but absolutely love this trope.
Crack fic --> I’ve discovered them quite late into my fanfiction experience but damn, they are an absolute rollercoaster cause literally anything can happen. Generally they made me laugh and have a plot easy to follow.
Sharing a bed, in vino veritas, huddle for warmth ---> honestly? these are the most famouse trope but damn don’t we love to keep reading them? I love them because they’re basically expedients to move the relationship a step further.
“I’m sorry but the lady at the check in said there’s only a double room available.” Fuuck
Established relationship --> now, the majority of the fics I read are about two people who meet for the first time and eventually get together. I’m not going to lie though, seeing how an established relationship work in everyday life and through whatever hardships the plot is going to put them? Love to see. It’s not that common but I like it. (And yes guys, I am talking about domestic Alfie)
Fix it fic--> YES PLEASE! Most of my favourite characters are mistreated by writers or just have a shitty ending and I’m not going to stand for it! (Yet again I’m talking about Alfie-before s5 but also after ‘cause they treat him as a secondary character but damn he’s not- and Klaus Mikealsons but also Tommy Conlon)
The “like it” category:
Crossovers---> I especially love these if they happened between two worlds not so alike. Like idk tvd and greek mythology. In fact, unashamed self promo, I have written one of those as a testament to the fact that I love them lol.
I generally like all of this tropes but it depends on how they’re written. For example: arranged marriage? Yes, I do like them but only if it happens in a healthy way. Sure, we can all agree that forcing someone to marry a dude they don’t know it’s not cool and in real life I’m definitely against it of course. However, those I’ve read (mostly with Alfie) happened in a way that the two parts were somewhat aware of it and agree to do it. And, almost at the beginning of the relationship, they set some boundaries and give the relationship a try. Am I inclined to like this trope because I think of what marry Alfie Solomons would be like? Probably. But like I said, in the way I’ve described above, they don’t feel as toxic to me. Oh and they are all set in the early 1900s so basically every marriage was somewhat arranged. Maybe that’s another important factor that makes me regard them as okay.
College AU ---> it’s been a while since I’ve read any but when I did I remember liking it. I don’t read it anymore ‘cause I am in college and they all feel a bit fake and repetitive.
I am all for canon divergence if the canon is shitty.
The “depending on mood” category:
In real life, miscommunication is literally something that I actively try to fix or avoid. I know that in fics they’re functional to the plot but I feel like it’s said and done over and over again. I’d love to see a relationship dynamic whose problem is not miscommunication that leads to infidelity. this mainly applies to films and tv series but in ffs it’s okay. Like, especially for some characters. es: Alfie, Tommy Conlon. Ronnie and even Klaus.
is pretty self explanatory. I love everyone of these tropes but I tend to read them when I’m in the mood for it. Like I’d go and search for angst or fluff and the like.
The only thing I’m going to say about the “not my thing” category it’s for the “love triangle”. Please, please, please, stop putting useless drama in a relationship like the third guy that in a Netflix film is usually played by POC actor (and it’s always better than the main character) I just- I feel like it’s over done and I’m tired to see it.
Hope you liked this, friends (and that I’ve not bored you)! Can’t wait to read yours!
