here is me figuring out the set up for the one scene in carrying the banner where they are all on the scafolding

top left : tommy boy and elmer

top middle: Jojo and race

top right: kid blink and specs

middle left: Albert and buttons

direct middle/middle middle: crutchie and jack

middle right: smalls and finch

bottom left: Ike and mike

bottom middle: sniper and romeo

bottom right: Henry and mush

now for what they are doing (this is the hard part)

tommy boy is tying his shoe while Elmer is putting his hat on

jojo is adjusting his hat and suspenders and race is putting his vest on

blink is putting on his hat and specs is putting on his suspenders

albert is doing something (wiggling???) with his vest and buttons is combing his hair

crutchie is kinda just there, adjusts his vest, while jack (very aggressively) ruffles his own hair

smalls puts their vest on and finch plays with his rag(??)

mike and Ike both put their vests on then realize they took the wrong hat, so Ike playfully flips mike's to him while mike shoves Ike's hat to his chest

sniper adjusts his clothes and romeo puts his hat on

henry puts his vest on, grabs both him and mush's hats and puts his on then wips mush's around before tossing it in the air and mush catches it

(I have rewatched this specific scene over 25 times in a row to figure this out)

Ahem. Here is my (hopefully coherent) list of what every Newsie in uksies does during that one bit of carrying the banner & who they do it with !!!

Splasher, JoJo, & Elmer jump rope !!! Except Splasher is the only one actually jumping & he does flips why he does so because Ross Dorrington is just Like That ig ?

Romeo & Ike play what LOOKS like baseball but I don't think they actually have a ball so they spin around, Ike winds up to throw the ball (that doesn't exist), and then when Romeo swings the back Ike reels back & falls down like he's been hit! So that's going well. (Update: I'm pretty sure he either hits Ike with the baseball bat or he hits someone in the distance with a baseball. Either way. Not going well.)

Henry & Mike play cards !! Henry wins, so he stands up on the box he was sitting on, & goes 2 celebrate I think but Finch shoves him off the box for 'waiting make me antsy, I likes living chancy!'

Finch dances with Jack, for a bit, before walking around and shouting something to Splasher, JoJo, and Elmer, and then he gets ? really excited ? it looks like ? & that's when he shoves Henry (see above).

Buttons & Mush play with a slingshot !! Buttons kinda rolls around while Mush tries 2 hit him with it :)

Crutchie swings his crutch at the set???? (He may be using it as a baseball bat but. not 100% on that)

Jack just kinda hangs around one side of the stage, interacting with a few different people, & then Specs punches him in the arm at the beginning of 'waiting makes me antsy!'

Speaking of Specs !! Albert, Race, & him clean up around the lodging house (specifically inside the set), & at the end of that bit, Race puts on his vest <33

Tommy Boy pulls a paper ball out of the stage & kicks it around for a bit, before kicking it into the audience.

man. my problem is that i’ve been obsessive over newsies for years now, but i’ve only recently gotten into the Newsies Fanwork Sphere, and so the side newsies i’ve built in my head are so insanely different than the accepted fanon versions. for example, here are some ideas that i’m Pretty Sure are not in the general newsies canon? but also i wouldn’t know:

wdym mike and ike are teenagers? they are twins who are 9-10 max.

crutchie race and finch are all the same age (17ish)

sniper is a girl (and/or afab nonbinary depending on how silly i’m feeling)

tommy boy and jojo are german w/ heavy accents

mush is a heavier smoker than race

henry is aromantic (but not ace!)

there’s some romantic tension between elmer tommy boy and jojo. nobody knows what that’s about

race is a pseudo caretaker for the littles. (cooking for them, getting them through wash day, making sure they’re all inside for the night, etc.)

the age order goes jack > henry > mush > crutchie > race > finch > elmer > tommy boy > jojo > romeo > sniper > specs > buttons > mike/ike. where’s kid blink? don’t ask me that i dont know

i cannot see anything else as canon bc i’ve built this little world up in my head for YEARS. help.

Brought to you by @newsies-but-theacadianway because she asked which newsies would prefer dogs or cats in a discord chat and these were my answers

Crutchie: loves both

So does Mush

Albert is very middle ground. Likes cats because they’re independent but he can run around with dogs

Specs, Elmer, and Buttons are cat people

Jojo is a hamster guy. Don’t ask why it goes with his randomness

Davey has a mild allergy but likes cats

Sniper isn’t an animal person but animals love him

Romeo…I dunno. Gives me rabbit vibes

Les isn’t allowed to own anything that isn’t a gold fish

Tommy boy is ok with whatever. Long as said animals leave his stuff alone

Finch is and forever will be a bird boy

Jack is a horse person. Duh

now you’re onto something with Tommy Boy stammering 🤌🤌

tommy’s stammering is a vicious cycle - he talks less and gets more anxious because of it, which makes it worse, which makes him want to talk even less. he gets incredibly frustrated with himself, and very embarrassed, and then he has these explosive outbursts because he hates his stupid useless tongue and hates himself and hates talking and hates people looking at him like that—

this all leaves him with this reputation of being a loose cannon and erratic and violent, and also not being very bright - none of which is true. really, he’s shy and gentle and empathetic and understanding. he loves to hear other people’s points of view and always puts himself in other people’s shoes when he’s considering any situation. he’ll hear anyone out about anything, especially if other newsies get into an argument or fight, he’ll want to hear every side and really understand the whole situation - and then he’ll try to fix it. he likes people, he wants people to be friends, he just wants everyone to understand each other. he hates how angry he gets when things aren’t working.

his stammer can mean he has a lot of trouble selling papes too, especially on bad days, and other newsies sometimes accuse him of putting it on for sympathy. they’ll tell him to talk proper, and some have hit him in the face like that’ll either make him stop faking or maybe knock something loose and fix him. people he’s trying to sell to will lose patience while he’s trying to force himself through announcing the headline, and he stammers worse when he’s trying to sell a fake one because he gets even more nervous. it’s a big factor in why he scabs during the strike - because he wholeheartedly feels like he’s unwanted and useless among the newsies, and he doesn’t make enough money off his own back to turn down the extra money for scabbing.

when jack does his impassioned speech to each of the scabs to encourage them to step down, tommy tries to ignore him. he doesn’t want to respond, he knows he’ll embarrass himself, but jack is looking at him, holding him by the shoulder, waiting for him, looking at him with that sort of expectant look tommy’s used to when he’s not speaking. and he does stammer as he responds - speaking in front of most of the newsies for the first time, including jack - but jack doesn’t look impatient as tommy fumbles through his sentence, questioning if jack and the rest really want him as part of the strike. he waits for tommy to finish - really waits for him to finish, until tommy’s said every word, even though it takes him a while and more attempts than he can count and jack definitively could’ve interrupted him and just guessed like most people do - and he earnestly tells tommy that he’s one of them. that they want him there. that they’ll look after him better than wiesel and the delanceys ever would.

so tommy throws down his papes. and he starts talking when the other newsies talk to him, even talking when they don’t and he’s just got something he wants to say.

he decides he truly is one of them the day albert tries to interrupt him while he’s stuttering and tommy tells him to shut up and finishes his sentence.

OKAY BUT CONSIDER KATHERINE TAKING THE NEWSIES TO THE PARK AND ALBERT AND THE OTHERS GETTING TO TRY SWINGS AND SEE SAWS FOR THE FIRST TIME

stop this would be so cute but so sad.

race, al, and finch would probably explore the entire thing and then claim the monkey bars

jojo, elmer, tommy boy, and buttons would make up their own game on the slides

jack, davey, crutchie, and kath would sit on the swings and watch the chaos unfold

mike, ike, mush, blink, and romeo would make specs be “it” while they play hide and seek tag

they make everyone join in after one round

they all have the most fun together they have had in a long time.

am i the only one when i first watched Newsies Live that identified everyone by their socks? like, jack davey less and race were obvious, but I still got everyone else confused so I did the sock thing and now I can figure out who's who
