Review: The Zombies - “Moving On”

The Zombies are back. And from the sound of things, they appear to have eaten Robin Trower’s brain.

On their new, bluesy rocker, “Moving On,” the Zombies channel Trower, the former Procol Harum guitarist best known for solo albums such as 1974’s Bridge of Sighs.

Although the Zombies’ best-tunes such as “Tell Her No,” “She’s Not There” and “Time of the Season” bear no resemblance to Trower’s work, the comparison sounds less absurd upon learning keyboardist Rod Argent began writing “Moving On” in the wake of Elvis Presley’s 1977 death, when Trower still loomed large in guitar-based rock. He then set the song aside for nearly four decades.

“I love the way it’s turned out all these years later,“ Argent told The Wall Street Journal, which premiered the track this week.

Argent, on piano, and guitarist Tom Toomey feature prominently and trade short solos in the mid-song break. Vocalist Colin Blunstone delivers the forward-looking lyrics with conviction.

I won’t cry for the past, for I’ve refound my freedom at last/I won’t shy from the strife/what doesn’t kill me will fill me with life/and I’m moving on to my dreams of tomorrow

“Moving On” appears on the Zombies’ new LP, Still Got That Hunger, slated for release Oct. 9. Judging from the fiery first single, the album’s title is apt.
