Ton Koopman explains Bach’s extremely beautiful Cantata, Actus Tragicus (Gottes Zeit Ist Die Allerbeste Zeit). I always feel humbled when hearing this cantata, which really can soothe those who are mourning and bereaved, as is currently the case today. Koopman, as one of the pre-eminent interpreters of Bach’s music, brings a great depth in his explanation.

Conductor and musician Ton Koopman discusses Bach’s Cantata 56, with some touching and pertinent insights into Bach’s musicianship and how he considered his own music. In particular, I like the highlight on Bach’s sense of disappointment that his employers were often an obstruction to his musical work, as is evident from his letters. I did not realise that this Cantata is actually about someone suffering from gout, asking to go to heaven. The instrumental parts for this cantata are indicative of Bach’s skill with illustrating words.
