With the 2nd album “Conscience,” I started to expand and truly bare my soul. I had been working as a service musician. Providing a soundscape to live events not unlike a composer provides a score to a movie. During this time destiny stepped in. <Today’s CD> 오늘은 뉴욕 아방가르드 재즈계에서 지명도가 높은 베이시스트이자 작곡가인 마리오 파본의 신작 앨범이다. 프리재즈 계열의 음반은 되도록 피하려 하지만, 나름 들어본 후, 괜찮다 싶은 수작들은 가끔씩 소개해 보는 것도 나쁘지 않을 듯 하다. 마리오 파본은 일찌기 뉴욕 재즈씬에서 아방가르드 색소폰 주���로서 한시기를 풍미했던 토마스 채핑과 트리오로 활약했으며 채핑이 1998년 급성 백혈병으로 급서한 후에도 꾸준히 자신의 리드작 앨범을 매년 발표하고 있다. 이 앨범에는 오랜 친구이자 토마스 채핑 트리오의 드러머였던 마이클 사린이 참여했으며, 색소폰, 클라리넷, 트럼본, 3혼을 내세운 피아노레스 퀸텟 구성이다. 물론, 색소폰은 내가 정말 좋아하는 토니 말라비가 참여하고 있는데, 여전히 그의 이단아적 블로윙은 이 음반에서도 빛을 발한다. 재즈팬들조차 이러한 류의 연주를 기피하는 경향은 있으나, 프리재즈적 성향의 음반으로서는 너무 무겁지도, 난해하지도 않고, 조금 신경써서 들으면 긴장감 안에 묘한 관악기의 조화를 느낄 수 있는 수작 앨범이다. 작곡은 모두 마리오 파본 담당으로 레이블은 역시 포르투갈 프리계열의 Clean Feed. #music#freejazz#MarioPavone#MikeSarin#TonyMalaby#ThomasChapin#bass#pianoless#quintet#CleanFeed#2017 (Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서)
