What Up Nerds?!

Im back again with another World trigger blog. I know I know. What a shocker. This time around we are going to be fangirl- I mean talking about one of the best anime protagonist Osamu Mikumo.

First things first, let’s get to know our Loveable leader!

Osamu is a 15-year-old high school student in Mikado city. At the time of season one, he’s only been at Border for a few months as a C-Rank agent. He meets Yuma Kuga, A neighbor who save his life when he enters the restricted zone. The two become friends and Osamu promises to keep Yuma’s identity a secret. Later, a gate opens up outside at his school and he’s the only agent around. In order to save his classmates, he decides to fight, which is against the rules. Low and behold he can’t really fight. Yuna steps up and defeats the monsters, but gives the credit to Osamu.

Osamu is a very honest and kinda. He has a very high sense of Justice and is very determined and courageous. Even if it puts him in harms way, he always go out of his way to help others. While others can see the good in him, Osamu consistently doubts himself. He believes that he would run is he ever compromises due to his doubt in his drive to be an agent. Instead of thinking of his actions are noble or benevolent, he beloved them to be selfish in nature.

Aware for his lack of talent and strength, Osamu strives to become better and overcome his weaknesses. He does his best to strategize and give his team the win regardless of opponents or situations.

On the outside, Osamu is ordinary. Nothing making him stick out from the crowd. Especially when paired with Yuma. His trion level is low and his combat skills are….non existent. He’s workin on it though. Now you might be thinking that this is a horrible start to the argument, but please, Bear with me here.

Osamu doesn’t have some tragic backstory for what he’s doing. No one died or he wasn’t scared as a child. He does gain goals for being in border. His friend and tutor disappeared and he wants to find him. Then later on he wants to help his team get to their goals of the away missions. There is no intense 24 hour training where he is all of a sudden all powerful. He doesn’t have some epiphany to become the best. No, he’s just an average guy trying to do the right thing.

He isn’t getting an easy way out. All top border agents had to fight for their spots and it took them a lot of time to get to where they are. A lot of trial and error. Osamu isn’t treated differently just because he’s our main squeeze. He’s being made to go through all the failures and training everyone else had to go through. The of corse there are natural talents like Chika, but even she has to work up to being a top agent. She too has her trials and errors. She’s a cannon, but still has much to learn about hitting targets and controlling her fire.

At first Osamu sells himself short and is very unsure of himself. Fear of leaning of Yuma too much and feeling unsure of his place consumes him. With the constant reminding from literally everyone in the show that his combat is an F- , the confidence in himself is very low. This causes doubt in his thinking skills and makes him start away from honing in on his true ability. To become a useful asset to the team, Okamu does what ever he needs to get his team to their goal. He goes to others to ask for training and advice. But this soon becomes a hindrance. As he strays away from what he really contributes to the team. His strategy and trick play are S-Class. What he lacks in physical ability he makes up for in mental ability. Koji Oki notices that Okamu is good at dealing with setbacks with a level head. He rarely panics or hesitates when things get tricky. One example is during the Aftokrator invasion when he deceived the Neighbors about having chikas trion box. He thought up a plan in the middle of an invasion when things were looking bad.

After Sōya Kazama’s advice to be the Capitan instead of focusing on himself, we slowly begin to see his confidence grow and his strategy shift. He slowly begins to realize that he does contribute to the team. Osamu is able to bring out the strength of his teammates. Like the wires letting Yuma excel in his agility or train manipulation with Chika’s cannon. He begins to use his Brian more and his confidence in his convictions becomes stronger. He begins to think outside of the box and strengthens his team through ambitious ideas. Ideas such a as asking Jin to be on the team and then accepting a once hostile neighbor to be on their team. He also learned some negotiation tactics that he implements by placing his own “agents” to sway the conversation his way. A tactic he learned from Eizō Netsuki during the conference after Aftorkrator’s invasion.

Just a quick theory: I believe that Kido was just like Osamu when he was younger. This could be why Kido just lets him do shit. Kind of like how he backed up Osamu in the conference. Could have just left him high and dry, but he just went with the flow. Or when he learned that Osamu broke the rules, but just went ahead and promoted him anyway. Not to mention Osamu has his old room at Tamakoma. You know just a thought.

Osamu is relatable. He’s someone we can route for and someone we can be. His goals are obtainable and watching him grow is rewarding. He is the voice of the underdogs. The one to show that any goal can be reached as long as you work hard. And that’s something you don’t often see in a Shonen. Watching his growth was what really pulled me into this anime from the get go. I wanted to watch him succeed. His self realization and reflection is what set him apart from others. He perseveres even when things look bad and victory seems far. And this my fiends is why Osamu Mikumo is one of the best protagonists.

Well, that ended up being a much longer gap than I intended. But I’m finally feeling all better...more or less...I only coughed like a few times today so I’ll take it!

Anyway, this post is mainly to confirm that I’m still alive to anyone who’s still keeping tabs on me on this site, but also to post the last two chapters because I’d been working on them on and off during the last few weeks and I didn’t want to waste all that effort and not post it.

Once again I'm putting off comments since this was released so long ago, though I just want to point out how amazing it is that a dude like Yuba gets a cutesy nickname like -chan, by people younger than him like Konami. Also, yay, we finally get no.1 Gunner! Satomi having more points than Yuba is amazing too, even if it's because Yuba has been concentrating on his team (congrats to everyone who guessed right that Yuba squad dropped in the rankings because they lost a person).

And while on the subject of Yuba, I'm glad we got his stats, but there are so many newly introduced characters I want stats for...we don't even have a profile for Kanda!! Also, my apologies for how I couldn't find a good way to translate how gangster Yuba talks without making it cringy, I could barely keep in the way he elongates names to sound intimidating (he does it with other words too). Hello! Not sure if other people asked you about this already but have you read Ashihara's comment for this Jump SQ issue? In Viz's translation he said "20-page increments", what does that exactly mean? Or is this a mistranslation?

Hi back! First, some apologies as I have been on Tumblr even less recently. Some of it is me being distracted (and let me take this chance to thank the people who were very understanding about my distractions and other nice messages! My copy of the Supersons Omnibus recently came in the mail, so distractions are definitely still happening >.>) but some of it is also me figuring out setting up my blog somewhere else (which is also still happening…soon…). Either way, I’m sorry that I took so long to answer asks, some of them are now obsolete, like this one.

To be fair, Ashihara’s comment was pretty vague, but with this issue I think we can infer that he means he is continuing with the pace of about 20 pages per chapter and 2 chapters per issue. Whether he can maintain this pace is something we will have to wait and see.

In any case, I will definitely try not to wait until the next issue of Jump before answering some of the asks still in my inbox. But for now, on to the translation:

4More Days

1. I always enjoy noticeable character growth, and their last match didn't really show much of how Azuma squad's Attackers learned from their experience in the Invasion, so it's nice to see it being highlighted here. I really hope we get a double POV with both the expedition and what the ones left behind are doing because I'd love to see more of Azuma squad once they've dabbled more with sub-triggers since I doubt they’ll be going on the expedition (and the thing is, in another manga it'd probably cut straight to Azuma squad showing up later with new sub-triggers and a short flashback to let us know they started due to the results of this match, but because this is World Trigger it's seeded early in the story to be expanded on in the future)

2. As usual, there are some interesting parallels between Tamakoma and the other teams - this time both Osamu (and Yuuma's) protectiveness of Chika like Suzunari's protectiveness of Kuruma get used against them. In fact, Azuma in general acts a lot like Tamakoma squad has been up until now: creating a target Tamakoma has to react to (what happened to Arafune squad in R2), making his enemies think he's somewhere then popping up somewhere else (what happened to Akane in R3) etc etc

3. The thing is, Osamu's reasoning isn't even wrong necessarily, about the importance of Chika to their strategy. The problem is that this reasoning of Osamu's is really noticeable (to both Arashiyama and Inukai) and really obviously being used by Azuma. Guaranteeing a way for opponents to make Osamu act in a specific way is just asking for trouble (and that's basically Tamakoma's main strategy). Of course, Tamakoma also knows Azuma just as well, and at least Yuuma is always there making up for Osamu's actions.

4. Back on the subject of parallels, we also have Kitazoe and Hus and how their actions managed to benefit their team even as they bailout.

5. A good reminder from Azuma about making sure their trion can hold up to new triggers, since Koarai at 4 has one of the lowest (in fact, he's tied last of the Border characters we have trion values for, except for Osamu the exception of course), but if Kitora can be an A-rank Allrounder with that then I'm sure Koarai will be fine.

5. Also some nice parallels to Ninomiya and Izumi's first conversation in-story as well, with Ninomiya using the exact wording even.

6. In conclusion, is it just me or is Tsuji's jacket shiny...? Is this a Koma-san fashion disaster again, or just what Ashihara thinks happens with boys who can't talk to girls?

1. Kage's grapple hook Scorpion is super cool, but I wonder if this is one of those cases where not many people can mould Scorpion so well since we don't see a lot of other people doing things like this. We haven't seen anyone else except Yuuma use Mantis after all. Though I guess that means Yuuma might be able to use Scorpion like this too.

2. A sniper with enough experience will be able to snipe even in the dark. But what about Chika? Since she's leaving the lit areas, will she be able to snipe accuratelly or be restricted to bombardment only? I suppose it doesn't matter so much when she still can't shoot people yet.

4. Is YUITSUKA the unknown operator for Azuma squad back when it had Nino, Kako, and Miwa??? Or was there yet another old Azuma squad? She’s the same age as Miwa so it’d work...

5. I'm not convinced if Murakami's black Kogetsu means it's supposed to be Lead Bullet. It's meant to be a bullet option after all. But the question remains, what else can it be...?

6. In conclusion, looking at the positioning, it seems Osamu is probably doomed if Hus doesn't come save him. But to do that, Hus will have to ignore Osamu's orders to join up with Yuuma first. Strategy-wise, what's best for Tamakoma is probably for Hus to join up with Yuuma and for them to get all four Kage/Suzu fighters while they're concentrating on each other (especially the Kage duo when what Tamakoma wants the least is Kageura squad getting any points), with Osamu hopefully being able to distract Azuma squad and not die until they can come down and take the Azuma squad points. Of course, Taichi and Yuzuru are still wandering around freely so who knows what will happen?
