Canadian violinist Marc Djokic is the winner of the 2020 ECMA Classical Recording of the Year and the 2017-2018 Prix Goyer. Among other distinctions, he is a Prix Opus laureate and former Canada Council Instrument Bank recipient. His recently released collaborative albums, Andre Mathieu musique de chambre and The Spirit and the Dust, garnered glowing reviews upon their release. In summer 2019 Marc Djokic embarked on his second European tour with solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and masterclasses. From BC Contact to Jeunesses Musicales and Debut Atlantic, Djokic has toured several times throughout Canada as an accomplished chamber musician. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is Schubert's 14th string quartet. For the next 14 days each day we'll publish a tidbit about this work. Here we go with tidbit #1 ❤ Schubert composed his masterpiece 'Death and The Maiden' in 1824. This image shows his manuscript for the 2nd movement of the work. The Andante con moto is a set of variations in G minor, based on the piano introduction to the famous song Der Tod und das Mädchen, “Death and the Maiden”. The song was set to a poem by Matthias Claudius, an 18th-Century clergyman fascinated by the Totentanz, the “dance of death,” a late-Medieval theatrical form that showed Death dancing and talking with the townsfolk - king, beggar, youth, knight, and maiden - before taking them away with him. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN streaming April 9 - May 8 Tidbit #2 - The 'Death and the Maiden' gives us Schubert’s dark side, a place quite different from the atmosphere often shown in prints, with a sociable young man at the keyboard among his circle of friends in a cosy Viennese interior. It is written in minor keys throughout, something Schubert never did in any other quartet. And its primary key, D minor, was deemed in the second half of the 19th-Century to be appropriate for depicting tragedy and turmoil.
