My headcanon is that Martin doesn't need glasses, but he wore them when working at the library and later archives beacause he had read that it makes you look smarter and more trustworthy

Also he specifically bought them for his job interview, but he didn't want to spend much money for actually decent ones so he got himself some cheap sunglasses and got rid of the glass, hoping that no one would notice he was only wearing rims
