An interview with two-time Olympic gold medalist, two-time FIFA World Cup Champion, and U.S. Women's National Soccer Team member Tobin Heath and 2023 Tour de France Femmes Winner Demi Vollering.

Tobin Heath sits down with Demi Vollering ahead of this year's Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift to discuss the upcoming race and what it means to be a professional female athlete today. The two talk about the power of language when it comes to women's sports (Should we call the men's race the Tour de France Hommes?) and the challenges of closing the gender pay gap. Demi gives us a breakdown of this year's race and offers some training advice to motivate all the cyclists out there. We also find out how Demi comes up with titles for her Strava activities and what counts as a "slow" pace for her climbs (hint: it's actually really fast).

Tour de France Femmes - Stage 1

It's finally here, the biggest stage race on the Women's World Tour calendar, le Tour de France Femmes (avec Zwift, if you prefer). This was a true sprint stage, pancake flat, with the only climb with mountain points coming over a bridge as the riders rode *up* to sea level!

In terms of excitement, it was admittedly a snoozer, with few attacks, no cross-winds, and the bunch all coming in together. Commentators were reduced to following the occasional rider coming back to the bunch from mechanical.

As the peloton wound its way into The Hague, the speed predictably picked up, with the last kilometer being raced at more than 60kph. In a chaotic finish with what seemed like a premature launch, Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich-postNL) had a phenomenal kick and won the sprint by about three bike-lengths, a fantastic result for a rider who had a rough season so far.

It does seem fitting to have a Dutch rider winning the first stage in the Netherlands, although the betting odds might have been on Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime). However, Wiebes appeared to have had a late mechanical and wasn't able to contest the sprint. The closest riders to Kool were Anniina Ahtosalo (Uno X-Mobiliy), Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek), and Lotta Henttala (EF-Oatly-Cannondale), and Marianne Vos (Visma Lease-a-Bike). It's kind of fun that Team dsm-firmenich-postNL won the first stage in the Tour de France Femmes and the Tour de France Hommes (with Romain Bardet) this year.

Cristina Tonetti (Labora Kutxa-Fundacion Euskadi) won the "mountain" points climb over Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) and landed in the polka-dot jersey, a nice day for her and her team!

And Anniina Ahtosalo (Uno-X Mobility) wears the white jersey, a nice reward for her second-place finish! (Strong Finnish representation in that final sprint, by the way.)

And so Charlotte Kool takes the first yellow jersey for this year's TdFF. She actually takes the green jersey as well, though she'll loan it out tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, Tuesday will see the peculiar double stage day, with a short sprint stage in the morning and a short ITT in the evening. (Pour one out for the team mechanics, they're going to be working overtime tonight and tomorrow!) These split stages are weird, we've see them in races like Baloise Ladies Tour, but not the Tour. However, the organizers wanted to keep eight stages, even though they were constrained on the calendar by the Paris Olympics, and this was the solution. Kool could keep the yellow jersey through Stage 2, but it might be a taller order to keep the jersey after the ITT on Stage 3.

Weekly Writing and Reading Update

Hello I went blue-water kayaking for the first time in AGES (and the first time in my kayak) today and of course I pick a delightfully windy-ass day to do it, lolsob. I managed about 40 minutes and succeeded in not capsizing which was my only goal. I can't wait to do it again, just maybe on a calmer day (and with floats and maybe a spray skirt, but I have the floats on hand, at least). Also I am unbelievably, unspeakably tired.

Also I have still not quite made the time to watch Good Omens, I blame the Tour de France Femmes (avec Zwift iykyk), but now! today! I have to put my kayak back together (it's a folding kayak and is currently drying on my dinky patio) and then! FINALLY!

Of course I have a busy week this week and probably won't have time to watch Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, but my goal is to finish the series Friday night so I have all weekend to write.

Okay Saturday at least, since I want to do a big hike on Sunday.

Also Worlds begins next weekend at least for the ones I want to watch/catch up on

Writing

Honestly nothing worth noting, I'd started a bit of indulgence but there's so much more to chew on. It feels apropos to note that I read like three spoilers and basically write a little one-shot in my head as I was falling asleep last night, so safe to say I'm back on my bullshit.

(I do really wish season 3 would come out during winter, I have...not so much time indoors right now when I'm not working, lol.)

(Am I thinking about where I was summer 2019 as opposed to now, and how much busier and richer my life is not in Seattle? Yes, but that is babbling for another time.)

Reading

I finished Big Swiss which is one of those books I ought to hate, but I was...not necessarily loving it, but definitely fascinated as hell with it. It's such a gross book, and Greta is so majestically self-destructive, I actually could not look away. Magnificent, 10/10 would watch barely-likeable protagonists fuck their own lives up again.

Also, not a book, but I finally read Blackmun's dissent in DeShaney v. Winnebago County, a landmark case that essentially determined that the government is not actually expected to protect you. (Skip noted segregationist Chief Justice William Rehnquist's ruling, but the Wikipedia article on the case breaks it down well.) You can read it here -- scroll down to the very bottom, his dissent is only 4 paragraphs, and it is beautifully, wonderfully written. The 'Poor Joshua!' paragraph is the most famous, but I return again and again to the passage Justice Blackmun quotes from Stone's Law, Psychiatry and Morality, and particularly the line "What is required of us is moral ambition."

(I learned about the case and Blackmun's dissent through the podcast 5-4, which is both excellent, and a good antidote to growing up in the shadow of the Warren Court, as I did. The Supreme Court has always sucked, it turns out. Seriously, it's one of my favorite Supreme Court podcasts and I subscribe to, um, a lot.)

Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women staat aan de vooravond van haar derde deelname aan de Tour de France Femmes 2024 avec Zwift. De editie van 2024 belooft in meerdere opzichten een bijzondere te worden. Kopvrouw Riejanne Markus, winnares van olympisch zilver Marianne Vos en ploegleider Jan Boven kijken vooruit naar dit unieke wielerevenement. Een Bijzondere Start op Nederlands Grondgebied De Tour de France Femmes 2024 start dit jaar op maandag 12 augustus in Nederland, een primeur voor dit prestigieuze evenement. Rotterdam is even het epicentrum van de wielerwereld, en ook Dordrecht, opnieuw Rotterdam en Valkenburg zullen een etappestart organiseren. Op de tweede dag zijn er zelfs twee etappes gepland: een korte vlakke rit van 67 kilometer in de ochtend en een tijdrit van ruim 6 kilometer in de avond. Riejanne Markus kijkt uit naar deze unieke start in Nederland. “De voorbereiding verloopt eigenlijk wel lekker,” zegt Markus. “Ik heb goed kunnen trainen en daarna een prima wedstrijd gereden in Polen. De intensieve benadering van de Tour de France Femmes 2024 dit jaar is voor mij een motivatieboost. Dat werkt natuurlijk ontzettend aanstekelijk.” Tourritten op Nederlandse Bodem Markus is bijzonder enthousiast over de etappes op Nederlandse bodem. “Het is echt super bijzonder dat de Tour voor het eerst in het buitenland start, en dan ook nog eens in Nederland. Op dag twee starten we in Dordrecht, de geboorteplaats van mijn partner. Ik ken de omgeving en de hele familie zal komen kijken, net als veel vrienden. Het is geweldig dat de grootste koers van het jaar zo dichtbij huis komt. Ik hoop dat het net zo’n belevenis wordt als in Frankrijk, maar daar maak ik me geen zorgen om,” vertelt de 29-jarige renster. Ook Marianne Vos, die aan haar derde Tour begint, is enthousiast over de start in Nederland. “Nu de start in Nederland is, geeft het wel een iets ander gevoel dan normaal. Ik ben heel benieuwd naar de sfeer in Nederland. Voor de Nederlandse rensters en ploegen geeft het zeker iets extra’s. De Tour is de grootste ronde die er is, dus je doet er alles aan om in je best mogelijke vorm te verschijnen,” aldus Vos. Ploegdoelen en Individuele Ambities Voor Vos ligt de focus op het behalen van etappezeges. “Ik ga proberen om weer voor een etappewinst te gaan. Dat geldt zowel voor de ploeg als voor mij persoonlijk. Er zijn zeker etappes waarbij we als ploeg een kruisje hebben gezet, en als er ergens kansen ontstaan, dan gaan we er zeker voor. De teamdoelen zijn daarnaast natuurlijk ook belangrijk. Ik hoop de ploeg zo goed mogelijk te kunnen ondersteunen in deze Tour,” vertelt Vos. Ploegleider Jan Boven geeft meer inzicht in de ploegdoelen. “Na een goed klassement in de Vuelta a España, willen we dat in deze Tour opnieuw bereiken. Riejanne is onze vooruitgeschoven renster. Demi Vollering is de absolute topfavoriet voor de eindzege, maar voor de plekken daarachter zijn er wat mij betreft veel kanshebbers. Met Marianne willen we strijden voor etappezeges. Wellicht dat groen vanzelf een doel wordt. Daarnaast is Anna Henderson goed in vorm, dus zij zal zich ook niet verstoppen,” legt Boven uit. Markus is vastberaden om een goed klassement neer te zetten. “In de Tour heb ik nog geen top tien gereden. Dat hoop ik dit jaar wel te doen. Ik heb de tijdrit op dag twee stiekem al met rood omcirkeld. Het is een mooi parcours dat me goed moet liggen. De etappes in het slotweekend hebben ook mijn aandacht getrokken. In de eerste ritten kunnen we met onder andere Marianne mikken op etappezeges. Er liggen heel veel kansen voor ons team,” zegt Markus. Een Mythische Finish op Alpe d’Huez De slotetappe van de Tour de France Femmes 2024 finisht op de mythische Alpe d’Huez. “De finish op de Alpe d’Huez gaat heel bijzonder zijn. Ik ken die beklimming van tv en kijk uit naar een heel mooie koers. Hopelijk kunnen we er als team een succesvolle en mooie Tour de France Femmes 2024 van maken,” aldus Vos. Markus reed recent voor het eerst de Alpe d’Huez op tijdens een trainingskamp met haar zusje. “Het is een prachtige berg. Ik hoop die dag voor het eerst in mijn leven een toptienklassering in het eindklassement van de Tour veilig te stellen,” zegt Markus vol vertrouwen. De Motivatie is Groot Ploegleider Boven benadrukt de motivatie binnen het team. “Met zo’n magische start in Nederland moest deze Tour de France Femmes 2024 wel op een mythische plaats eindigen. Dat is met de Alpe d’Huez zeker het geval. De start in Nederland en de finish op een iconische berg moeten het wielrennen in Nederland opnieuw een boost geven.
