Last month’s freeze in Texas was the latest plank on the pile. The state is home to the world’s largest petrochemical complex, which turns oil and gas and its byproducts into plastics. The February freeze triggered mass blackouts that shuttered plants, many of which remain offline.

“What we saw with the freeze is we’re one issue, one weather event away from supply-demand tightening operating rates, and so it doesn’t take much to tilt the market,” Howard Ungerleider, the chief financial officer of Dow Inc., said at a conference Tuesday.

Several of Dow’s petrochemical plants in Texas were forced to shut down during the freeze, and Mr. Ungerleider said they would be running at 80% capacity by the end of March.

Samsung, one of the world’s largest chip makers, was forced to idle two chip factories in Austin, Texas, last month. The facilities represent about 28% of Samsung’s total output, according to Citi analysts, and remained shut as of Wednesday.

Toyota cited a petrochemicals shortage for curtailments at its factory in Kentucky, where it builds the Camry and Avalon sedans and the hybrid version of its RAV4 sport-utility vehicle. The shortage would also lead to cuts in production of its Tacoma pickup truck built in Mexico.

Meanwhile, the California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which together handle more than a third of U.S. container imports, remain inundated from an inventory restocking drive that began late last year and has picked up steam in 2021.

Lengthy backlogs that at one point left some 40 vessels anchored offshore waiting for dock space have narrowed, but there were still 17 container ships waiting off the Southern California coast earlier this week. The backups have stretched to other West Coast gateways like the Port of Oakland as importers sought to move goods around the bottlenecks.

“The supply chain problems have been relentless and affecting us directly for the past year,” said Abbie Durkin, the owner of Palmer & Purchase, a women’s clothing and accessories shop in Rye, N.Y. “We’ve had cargo stuck in Los Angeles for months and we are now using airfreight for about a quarter of our volumes to make sure things will come in on time. Our freight cost has doubled and we will have to increase our prices starting in June.”

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka expects little respite, with another 18 ships set to arrive at the port complex by this weekend.

“Import volume will continue to be strong through the spring and early summer,” Mr. Seroka said Tuesday.

As for semiconductors, they have been in short supply for months after makers of cars, smartphones, PCs, tablets and TVs underestimated expectations during the pandemic, before ramping up orders that caught chip manufacturers unprepared.

General Motors Co. , Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have all announced production cuts or temporary plant shutdowns due to the chip shortage. Such factory disruptions—even ones that are short-lived—can show up in earnings results because car companies book revenue when a vehicle is shipped from the plant to the dealer. Many dealerships are tight on inventory, and that has some car shoppers having to hunt harder for desired models and paying top dollar when they do find them because dealers and brands have pulled back on discounts.

The Honda Accord gets a few little improvements this year, none of which should hamper the perennial success of this easy-to-like family sedan. That’s more important now than ever, too, as the 2021 Accord faces against increasingly stiff competition. In addition to the Honda’s longstanding archrival, the Toyota Camry, companies like Hyundai, Kia and Nissan are offering better midsize options than ever before. Thankfully, the 10th-generation Accord was a winner from the get-go.

In fact, this Accord was so good out of the gates that its mid-cycle refresh is limited to just a few styling tweaks, minor cabin tech upgrades and some model positioning/packaging changes. Honestly, the biggest news for the 2021 Accord is an improved hybrid drivetrain, which my buddy Andrew Krok talks about in detail in a separate review.

Visually, the slimmer LED headlights and wider grille of my Sport tester don’t really move the needle one way or the other, although I have to say the Accord’s new Sonic Gray paint option — which originally debuted on the Civic — looks totally hot. LX and EX-L models roll on milquetoast 17-inch wheels, while Sport, Sport SE and Touring trims get snazzier 19s, wrapped in 235/40-series tires.

Honda’s 1.5-liter turbo I4 is still the base engine option, putting out 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four is available with Sport and Touring models, bringing a healthy 252 hp and 273 lb-ft to the party. Sad trombone time, though: The Accord’s six-speed manual transmission option goes away this year. The 1.5T engine comes standard with a continuously variable transmission and the 2.0T has a 10-speed automatic. And before you complain, know that only a super-duper-small percentage of Accord buyers actually spec’d the manual gearbox. In other words, y’all only have yourselves to blame.

Another thing you can’t get on the Accord? All-wheel drive. I know AWD might sound like an oddity for a midsize sedan, but more and more automakers are embracing this foul-weather friendliness in an attempt to appease customers who simply don’t want an SUV. No longer reserved for the Subaru Legacy, the Kia K5, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry all offer AWD now. Go to your Honda dealer looking for all-wheel drive and they’ll happily show you a CR-V.

The 2.0-liter I4 is a total peach of an engine — as it should be, since it’s effectively the same unit used in the delightful Civic Type R. You can ride a smooth wave of torque from just 1,500 rpm, and the 10-speed transmission is happy to hang out in the lower end of the engine’s rev range, making the most of that turbocharged woosh. On the other hand, this means the 10-speed gearbox is often hesitant to kick down and go-go-go-go-go when quick highway passes are demanded, though if you run the Accord in its Sport mode, the transmission is not only snapper to shift, but holds onto gears longer, too.

With the 2.0-liter engine, the Accord should return an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined. That’s… fine. But similarly powerful turbocharged competitors like the Nissan Altima and Subaru Legacy are slightly more frugal. Of course, if fuel efficiency is a top concern, you’re probably better off just sticking with the 1.5T, or for that matter, an Accord Hybrid.

The Sport 2.0T has largely the same suspension setup as other Accord models, save for the Touring, which offers adaptive dampers. But even without ’em, the Accord Sport strikes an excellent balance of comfort and composure; this car will eat up highway miles with cool, collected confidence and it won’t get all pissy if you toss it into a corner with gusto. The steering is nicely weighted and quick to respond and, generally speaking, the Accord feels more agile than just about anything else in the class, except maybe the Mazda6. Maybe.

The cabin might seem a little plain, but it’s quiet, comfortable and neatly organized.

More than its outright sportiness, though, the Accord has an aura of refinement that’s missing from other midsize sedans. There’s a feeling of premium solidity that makes this Honda effortless to drive. Combine that with a quiet cabin and comfortable seats, and long stints behind the wheel of the Accord are anything but fatiguing.

This Honda is an easy car to live with day to day, too. The interior might lack the flashy design of some newer sedans like the Hyundai Sonata, but all of the Accord’s controls are exactly where you expect them to be and every surface you touch looks and feels really nice. Head- and legroom is generous for both front and rear passengers and there are plenty of little storage cubbies throughout the cabin, including one underneath the climate controls that houses a wireless charging pad on upper trims.

Every 2021 Accord now comes with an 8-inch touchscreen running Honda’s Display Audio multimedia system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and can be operated wirelessly on any Accord that has the aforementioned charging pad. These are small tech upgrades, but thoughtful ones. That said, the Display Audio software really lags behind what a lot of other automakers offer in terms of design and functionality and the Accord can’t compete with the bigger screens and higher-res displays found in rivals like the Sonata and K5. Across its full portfolio, Honda could really stand to give its infotainment tech a boost.

Both 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines are available.

At least driver-assistance tech is in high supply. Every Accord gets adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic-sign recognition, forward-collision warning and automatic high-beam headlights. Unfortunately, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert isn’t available on the lower trim levels and you can only get a head-up display on the top-end Touring. It’s all great tech to have, but man, the lane-keeping assist and forward-collision warning sure are sensitive. I find myself turning them off more often than not.

Starting at $25,765 including a $995 destination charge, the 2021 Honda Accord remains competitively priced within the midsize sedan class. You can’t get into a 2.0-liter model for anything less than $33,105 and a top-of-the-line Touring will run you just under $38,000. That’s a few thousand dollars more than you’ll pay for an equivalent Hyundai Sonata Limited, though the latter doesn’t have as much power and isn’t quite as nice to drive. The Hyundai offers more striking design, a longer warranty and way better cabin tech, though — three things that are arguably more important for the average family sedan buyer.

Still, while some competitors might surpass the Accord in specific aspects, none feel as wholly well-rounded. Well-built, good to drive, refined and handsome, Honda’s midsize sedan continues to be a great buy.

Toyota Celebrates 60 Years in the U.S.

When Toyota launched its North American headquarters in a Hollywood, Calif., dealership on October 31, 1957, it was, no doubt, a frightening affair.

Halloween notwithstanding, a Japanese car company making a foray into the U.S. market was a bold move 60 years ago. And its first vehicle, the Toyopet Crown, didn’t turn out to be a screaming success either.

But since those humble beginnings in a 3,000-square-foot, one-time Rambler dealership, Toyota has woven itself into the cultural fabric of America. Sixty years in, it encompasses a presence in every state, including 10 manufacturing facilities (14 in North America), nearly 1,500 Toyota and Lexus dealerships and 136,000 direct, dealer and supplier U.S. employees. And, the company recently unified operations by bringing together its quality engineering, sales, marketing, financial services and corporate functions in one location at a new North America headquarters campus in Plano, Texas.

To commemorate its 60th anniversary, Toyota rededicated a 50th anniversary time capsule originally dedicated at its former Torrance, Calif., headquarters in 2007. The capsule—which includes items like a 2000GT die cast matchbox edition model car, an original key for a 1977 Toyota Hilux truck and a Toyota Formula One racer scale model—will be re-opened on the 100th anniversary in 2057. Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, who attended the ceremony, said the capsule marks a new chapter for Toyota.

The Metal Toyota’s American journey has been fueled by the cars it makes. In the 1950s that meant the Toyopet Crown and the now-legendary Land Cruiser. Introduced in the ‘60s, the Corolla would go on to become the bestselling nameplate in the world.

The ’70s got sporty with the Celica and the beloved ­Supra, while the ’80s introduced the American public to Camry and 4Runner, among others.

In 1989, Toyota launched its luxury vehicle division, Lexus, in the U.S. with two models, the LS 400 and ES 250.

In the ‘90s, Toyota filled out its lineup with models like the Tacoma, RAV4, Avalon and Sienna, and from Lexus, the GS, LX and RX.

In 2003, Toyota launched Scion to bring in younger customers and to test out revolutionary processes and products. As a result, the xB became an icon for a new millennium.

And, Toyota changed the world by pushing hybrid technology into the American mainstream with the Prius, which surfaced in 1997 and launched in the U.S. in 2000. More than a decade later, the iconic Prius was followed by another alternative fuel vehicle, the hydrogen fuel cell powered Mirai.

Manufacturing, Engineering and Captive Finance The ‘70s were critical to operations. Toyota marked its first U.S. production, signing Atlas Fabricators of Long Beach (later changed to TABC) to make truck beds. Toyota Technical Center, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary in May, opened its first U.S. R&D facility and Calty Design Research opened its doors in Southern California.

Growth continued into the ‘80s with the launch of manufacturing facilities in California and Kentucky.  In addition, Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (now known as Toyota Financial Services), began operations in the U.S. in October 1982.

In the ‘90s and ‘00s, Toyota added vehicle and parts plants in Indiana, West Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri and Mississippi. To support the rapid growth, Toyota consolidated its R&D and manufacturing operations under a single company in 2006.

The Future Over the years, Toyota Motor North America has transformed from just a sales company into a mobility company.

In 2016, the Toyota Research Institute launched, leading the way to autonomous vehicles, robotics, vehicle safety and materials science.  In the same year, Toyota Connected was created to use data to personalize the customer driving experience.

What started as a single store in Southern California has evolved into an American institution that continues to bring jobs, mobility and technology to its communities.

From a hatchback to a hybrid to the traditional Corolla, the compact sedan is available in different shapes and powertrains for those who have different needs. With 53/52 mpg, the Corolla Hybrid positions itself as one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg in addition to being  decently equipped. As proof of its fuel efficiency numbers, the EPA estimates you will spend only $600 per year on gas.

Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is one of the most popular sedans in the U.S., and its hybrid powertrain has been widely received among buyers. The EPA rates the Toyota Camry LE at 53/52 mpg, making it one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg. Those numbers also put the Camry at the top of the chart in the  midsize hybrid sedan segment—an added plus being that it offers one of that group’s roomiest interiors.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

We recently got a chance to drive the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and were impressed by its quietness, style, and technology. Hyundai made changes to the powertrain from the previous generation, helping its fuel economy numbers to jump to 50/54 mpg for the Blue trim. Other Sonata trims (SEL and Limited) deliver 45/51 mpg owing to their bigger wheels,  tires, and extra equipment. The new Sonata Hybrid definitely impressed us with its good gas mileage.

Honda Accord Hybrid

We’ve praised the Honda Accord Hybrid for its great styling, premium material quality on its higher trims, and fantastic value. The hybrid powertrain also brings good fuel efficiency to the Accord, making it one of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg. Delivering 48/47 mpg, the Accord falls right in line with the Hyundai Sonata SEL and Limited, and the Camry XLE and SE. The Accord’s interior space, packaging, and versatility also make it one of the best midsize sedans in the market.

Lexus ES 300h

Luxury sedans have also merged to the electrified world. The Lexus ES 300h delivers 43/44 mpg, with the EPA estimating that equates to about $700 for gas per year. With its roomy cabin and upgraded interior, the ES’ cockpit is not only a nice place to be, but its smooth hybrid powertrain makes it quieter, too.

Toyota Avalon Hybrid

The Toyota Avalon and the Lexus ES are pretty much the same car under the skin, so it makes sense that both models have a hybrid variant. Just like the ES 300h, the Avalon Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that works with an electric motor and battery to produce 215 hp combined. The result is the same 43/44 mpg as the ES 300h, and the Avalon Hybrid  still offers a spacious and comfortable cabin.

Ford Fusion Hybrid

Although it’s on its way out, the Ford Fusion made the list of the hybrid sedans with the best mpg thanks to its 43/41 mpg. Its good gas mileage and decent interior space make the Fusion Hybrid a compelling choice, especially as dealers try to free up floorspace.

Kia Optima Hybrid

The current Kia Optima is about to be replaced by a new generation, with an all-new sedan coming soon. But assuming that the hybrid variant could take a little longer than the conventional version’s to arrive, the current Optima Hybrid still delivers decent fuel economy. At 40/45 mpg, the Optima Hybrid is right in line with the previous-generation Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. We expect the new Optima Hybrid to deliver similar numbers to the 2020 Sonata Hybrid.

Acura RLX Sport Hybrid

Applying its learnings from the RDX Sport Hybrid crossover, Acura extended the Sport Hybrid variant to its largest sedan—the RLX. Although its 28/29 mpg doesn’t sound as great as the rest of the models in this group, it still delivers pretty good gas mileage for a sedan that sends 377 hp to all four wheels.

Honorable Mentions

Although we’d classify the Hyundai Ioniq and the Toyota Prius as hatchbacks given the way their trunklids contain their rear glass, they deserve an honorable mention given their impressive fuel economy and popularity.

Hyundai Ioniq

How does 59 mpg sound? The Hyundai Ioniq Blue is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the market, and it’s also affordable. At $24,155 and delivering 57/59 mpg, the Ioniq Blue is very attractive. There are other versions of the Ioniq (SE, SEL, and Limited), which don’t get the same fuel economy as the Blue, but at 55/54 mpg they’re still appealing.

Toyota Prius

A lot of people still think Prius when they hear the word “hybrid.” This Toyota has become a world leader in hybrid sales thanks to its great fuel economy numbers. The Prius is one of the hybrid cars with the best mpg, delivering 58/53 mpg. Although its styling might be a bit too much for some, we think it’s better-looking  than its previous generation.
