It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

homeless advocacy by houseless / housing activism by tenants

If you have some pocket money to spare, these are two organizations on two different coasts to support. I learned about Picture the Homeless over ten years ago, and the simple fact that it is a homeless-led organization was so radical.

Picture the Homeless in New York City is in dire need of emergency funds Rebuild Campaign for Picture the Homeless 

long-standing advocacy organization led for and by homeless people, is raising money to keep the doors to its East 126th street office open

The organization has fought for homeless rights and served as a place for homeless individuals to organize since its inception in 2003.

It is unique in being founded and led by homeless individuals.

“We self-organize,” says Burnett. “Because of that our members tend to see things a little differently than say a coalition of social workers.”

“Picture the Homeless is a space where homeless people themselves get to be heard and move change around what homeless people themselves recognize as the root causes of homelessness,” he says.

The organization has organized campaigns around development of affordable housing for homeless people, over policing and police reform, community land trusts, rights of homeless individuals and the “Shelter Industrial Complex“. (Source: City Limits July 2019)

I have been a renter my entire adult life. I just joined my first tenants union, the Los Angeles Tenants Union. The article excerpted below is a great intro on LATU

LATU started in 2015, and has “since expanded to ten local chapters, which meet twice a month across the city, and have now organized dozens of tenants’ associations, some with hundreds of members. LATU is a member-funded union. We are not a non-profit. We receive no funding except from dues, which average five dollars a month. 

30. But we didn’t just want to analyze gentrification, we wanted to stop it.

31. We recognized that the solidarity amongst gentrification’s beneficiaries—the police, landlords, developers, government representatives of the real estate state—meant we needed to build equal solidarity for ourselves.

50. When you call this crisis a housing crisis, you misunderstand the problem as one of production—the so-called “shortage”—and not of distribution. There are two vacant investor-owned homes for every houseless person in the country; cities overbuild luxury housing to appease investors, and the rents for working people do not decline despite that glut.

51. But you have heard it a million times and will hear it a million more: there is a housing crisis, and we will build our way out of it. 

52. From Gavin Newsom’s “Marshall Plan” to Ben Carson’s embrace of deregulation, this supply-side, build-baby-build strategy follows what gets promoted as economic common sense. 

53. But we understand supply-side policy as an attempt to govern housing without governance, to get people out of politics. To benefit the people who profit from housing, not the people who live in it.

The Hillside Villa Tenants Association focused citywide attention on the expiration of “Affordable Housing” covenants. “Affordable Housing,” the city, state, and county’s preferred policy solution to the crisis, uses incentives or subsidies as a trade-off for rent limits, which have an expiration date. Across LA, their expiration now threatens to displace thousands of residents. 77. Calling for the eminent domain of their building subsized with zero interest loans, Hillside Villa’s regular actions exposed the scam of public investment for private gain and the lie of affordability itself. 78. The East Second Street Tenants Association in Boyle Heights, determined to meet weekly and act together, continued a rent strike for almost twelve months, inspired campouts at their landlord’s house, received more national press than we can count, and eventually won LATU’s first collective-bargaining agreement, which controls rent increases and secures the right to renegotiate.

82. The Burlington Unidos Tenants Association, the largest rent strike in LA history. 83. #FuckYourFlips: a viral media campaign that encouraged interventions in the local processes of flipping and predation—tearing down those “cash for your houses” signs.

This time, it was a speech bubble. With each new set of her “NEWZ!” paintings, I like to study the one or few new forms that emerge        have always been there.      She found a speech bubble        revealed its absence       by carving the shape of doorway from that of a bone.

Math Bass has built       unraveled       the “NEWZ!” series by making a grammar out of negative space. Often, forms emerge not through their presence but rather through what’s withdrawn from view. I try to follow        backtrack        from A to B to Z. Math told me the quotation mark she uses came from       is just        the nostril of her often-featured alligator. (You won’t find the quote in this show, but you’ll get the gator’s jaws). From nostril to quotation mark, a shape becomes another by not changing at all. Here,a cavity becomes language        words congeal around a void.

The operation       making sense out of absence       makes me think about all the visceral abstractions I wade through:        like gender, like value. How they work by circulation and repetition,       like a kingdom of dominoes.       How they concretize bodies       like concrete poured in jeans      by evacuating meaning       like limp canvas sleeves.       What is gender, what is value, besides an appearance of coherence       after the fact of fabrication?      And        from Rob Halpern      what is a body besides “a hole around which everything that appears, appears to cohere”?

I think about all the visceralabstractions wrapped around me: like value, like gender         granddiscourses of cash and cum.         How being abstract doesn’t make them any less real            ly able to immiserate and kill.         How they take their place among our many integuments-      not just the rind, but the pith, not just the pith, but the membrane around each bit of pulp.       How we grow into their architectures       stretched canvas gym mat,       or their folds      the way unsewn hems appear to have been flayed,       or need them to prop ourselves up on         this is the staircase’s teeth.       Meanwhile, the metaphors of condensation and coagulation are all I       Sianne Ngai      have left to describe their work       shrines to an aftermath presented as the present.

Playing dumb        Los Angeles artist         I watch        turn my head       as one object becomes another by not changing at all          from N to W to Z (!).       The grammar of negative space manages to articulate difference out of more of the same.       How can language stand in for what’s unsaid?         Maybe negative space is another way of referring to tone: the work the body does around the words. Maybe negative space is the body itself       a hole, a void, a wound        defined by its vulnerability        to penetration, definition.        Maybe these speech bubbles aren’t speech bubbles after all, but rather a kind of catachresis         for the loss that speechlessness itself can’t articulate, or the hollow in the marrow.       In dominoes, a single tile is called a bone.

Math Bass (b. 1981, New York), lives and works in Los Angeles. She received a BA from Hampshire College, Amherst in 2003 and an MFA from University of California, Los Angeles in 2011. Bass began her career primarily as a performance artist, but has since expanded her practice to include painting, sculpture, and video. In 2015, MoMA PS1 presented the inaugural solo museum exhibition of Math Bass in the United States (curated by Mia Locks). This summer the Yuz Museum in Shanghai hosted her first solo exhibition in China. Her work has been written about in publications such as Artforum, Art in American, ArtReview, Frieze, Modern Painters, X-TRA, and ‘The Uncertain States of America Reader’, published by Sternberg Press in 2008.

The Rebel City Los Angeles guide answers the question, what would Los Angeles look like if vertical power as we know it disappeared?. 

The illustrated two sided guide helps users visualize the city from below, providing details of a developing infrastructure of people-centered institutions supporting human activities outside corporate dominion; from electricity, housing, education, medicine, and banking. Los Angeles born saint Vaginal Davis said “riding on the subway system and buses,,, are the Southland’s true barometer and soul of the city” and the guide hopes to help you take the temperature. 

Publication lists over 60 sites, and includes essays by Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal and Robby Herbst. Rebel City Los Angeles is a part of the Llano Del Rio Rebel City Project.

The Llano Del Rio Collective aims to expand cultural, social, and political imagination of Los Angeles through the production of thematic guides, related events and the hosting of a speakers bureau. We aim to frame practices, rather then be a practice. The collective is engaged in prefigurative research.

The project draws its name from the socialist colony founded in California’s Antelope Valley by Job Harriman in the early Twentieth Century.
