Who knew the Bronx can smell this good? Every once in a while, I will get a whiff of something that makes me feel like I’m at home. There is that Saint John Kanty smell when it just turns spring, and it’s a little too warm for a windbreaker or maybe the early morning fish water in downtown Flushing when the fish markets dump yesterday’s ice. Fish slime runs down Main Street towards the 7 station for all commuters to enjoy. Lately though, the city has been very pleasant. Working at the New York Botanical Gardens has make me look forward to smelling the Bronx. (Now there is a sentence I never expected to say.) I had the pleasure of working with Sonia Uyterhoeven, Gardener for Public Education on workshop building for the NYBG discussing the tradition of flower pressing, the creative uses of pressed flowers, and a few important tips for successfully pressing flowers and making your own designs. Let’s remember that the goal is productivity. This is usually what my office looks like. I’m propped up somewhere in the sunshine (or in today’s case the rain) with Spotify on my earbuds and focus on the project at hand. **WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER** I used to pride myself on exhaustion. “I work 26 hours each day” “I haven’t taken a vacation in years!” “I never leave my desk”. What does this create? Stagnant ideas and a consultant that doesn’t have any extra time for you when you have emergencies or to work when you have a brilliant idea. This is the last run for this old girl. It’s a sad, sad day. This is my carry on. My ride or die. My girl Friday. We have been through about a decade of travel together. I tend to overstuff on one way of the travel- whether its bringing supplies or gifts to my destination or trekking back with treasures to bring home. The zipper has never once given out. I’ve purchased a handful of replacements over the years. I have designer names and tech-utilitarian cases. I try, every time to use them, however before I leave I inevitably unpack and repack into this one. Before leaving this time, we needed a little extra duct tape (and we packed the roll just in case). Today, she started the death-gallop. If you don’t know what this is, it’s the beginning of the end. The wheels aren’t strong enough to support the case any longer and they start to shift outward just a wee bit. The faster you walk, the more unbalanced she gets until she is galloping like Gertie. By the time we get home she will be a full on dysplasia.
