Rainy day cuddles today. We aren’t feeling very well since our return from travelling. Cramps, heartburn, chest pains, and today we have a migraine. If you need us we will be cuddled on the couch taking pain relievers and watching quiet tv in the dark. Maybe I’m having an epic long anxiety attack as a response to going back to work. #travelhangover #exhausted #viral #feelingpoorly #feelingsorryformyself #loyalbestfriend #womanandherdog #vacationblues #migraine #itsnotabloodclot (at Esquimalt, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1ho9cMFRkK/?igshid=1xx4uhda37dt4

(Song of the Day: “Youth” by Daughter)
Traveling is great, except I usually need more time to recover after flying than after tequila.
#travelhangovers
I sprinted out of work last Thursday, grabbed my (totally overpacked and overweight) backpack, and headed for the airport to officially kick off spring break. While the initial plan was to go somewhere warm, I ultimately decided on Ireland, Scotland, and, since flying back into Madrid would have cost over 120€ more, Málaga.
Best decision of my life.
I spent Friday morning exploring Dublin but changed my mind once I saw brochures from Howth at one of the tourist offices and immediately headed over to the train station instead. After a 30-minute journey, I stepped out into the spring Irish sun (I KNOW!) in one of the most scenic fishing villages I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Everything was just so cute. The town itself is tiny, but, other than the port, there is a fair amount of hiking around it on the cliffs, and I spent the rest of the day enjoying the nature. It was beautiful. The weather definitely played a part, too. I’d planned to visit the Cliffs of Moher the following day, so it was a lovely preview.
Earlier in the day I’d purchased bus tickets to get to Galway, which is where I ended up Friday night. The hostel helped me sign up for a Cliffs of Moher tour the following morning, and it also included various stops along the way, such as the village of Kinvara and the Gleninsheen Wedge Tomb. In retrospect, I really wish they’d given us more time to explore the Cliffs themselves because those were spectacular and really make you realize your place in this world, but I enjoyed seeing more of Ireland’s countryside. Between the two parts of the country, the west coast was definitely more representative of what we stereotypically think of when we think of Ireland.
Sunday was probably the only day with a little bit of rain and gloomy weather, so my Galway explorations required frequent coffee shop stops to warm up, but it made my journey back to Dublin that night more pleasant and cozy. After strolling through the city for a little bit, I decided to stop in for a drink at one of the pubs near Temple Bar to check out their live music. Turns out, the two girls next to me were on vacation from California, and it was their last day before heading home. We hung out for a wee bit longer than I’d anticipated, but, hey, you gotta make friends, right?
My Ireland trip was unfortunately coming to an end on Monday because I was due to fly out to Edinburgh early Tuesday morning, so, of course, I had to go out with a bang. By that I mean I booked another tour, this time to the Wicklow National Park, and it was probably my favorite activity out of everything I’d done. Not only was it breathtaking, our guide also stopped along famous movie “landmarks,” such as the P.S. I Love You bridge and the Leap Year square. I was sad to leave but at least got to take some fabulous pictures before I did.
I’ll post about Scotland and Málaga separately because break is over, and I sometimes have to work to fund all these adventures.
xx
Logistical info:
Accommodation:
- Dublin: I stayed at the Spire and the Egali hostels while I was in Dublin, and, at around 17€ a night and free breakfast, both were a good deal. Egali was a little further away from the main tourist attractions, but still definitely walkable distance.
- Galway: Hostel options in Galway were fairly limited, and I ended up at Snoozles Hostel both nights. It was more expensive than any of the other places, but definitely worth the price. The staff and breakfast were incredible, and I even got upgraded for free!
Travel:
- Dublin to Howth: There are regular trains departing from the Dublin Pearse Station, and the 30-minute journey costs around 6.50€. The train takes you all the way to Howth, and there’s zero need for public transport once you’re there.
- Dublin to Galway: CityLink is one of the bus companies that offers direct connections, and the roundtrip ticket cost me around 25€ WITH a student discount (so definitely worth to ask). While you don’t technically have to buy them in advance and can just show up at the stop, it does get busy during peak times (Friday and Sunday nights, for example), and if you already have a ticket, you’re guaranteed a spot. Otherwise, you might have to wait for the next one, although they run roughly every hour or so.
- Cliffs of Moher: I know it’s possible to rent a car/take a public bus and get there by yourself, but I opted for an organized tour and am very glad I did. It didn’t allow us to spend as much time there as we would’ve wanted to, but the other stops along the way showed us much more of Ireland than we would’ve seen otherwise. I went through the Galway Tour Company for 25€ (with a student discount), but there are many options available for a decent price.
- Dublin to Wicklow/Glendalough: Again, I did a tour for this one, too. Wild Wicklow Tours was already very highly recommended in the Girls Love Travel Facebook group, as well as Trip Advisor, and I am definitely going to add to those recommendations because Niall was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had. The cost was also about 25-30€ with a student discount.
Activities:
- Howth: Hike! It’s easy to navigate everything because of how small the place is.
- Dublin: I’m not a big museum person, so I enjoyed seeing various landmarks from the outside, as opposed to only visiting some places. Temple Bar is definitely a must-see, but Trinity College and St. Stephen’s Garden were two of my favorites to walk through.
- Galway: The Spanish Arch and walking along the shore were definitely the highlights.
