Powertrain Components For The Road Tour Ahead

Dean Livermore and the crew at Hot Rods by Dean (HRBD) have been working flat out to complete our 1932 Ford pickup with sheetmetal from United Pacific (UP) on a Roadster Shop chassis. To complement that solid foundation we chose equally capable drivetrain components for the miles ahead.

When it came time to choose an engine we wanted a proven combination that was powerful, reliable, and absolutely hassle-free. We found all that and more in a 347-inch small-block from Ford Performance. Rated at 360 hp with 400 lb-ft of torque, the proven X347D stroker combination is based on a BOSS 302 block bored 0.030-inch oversize. Pistons are forgings from Mahle on I-beam rods with full floating pins and ARP bolts. The crankshaft is Scat made of forged steel. Ford Performance went to great lengths to optimize the cam/cylinder head/intake manifold combination for unparalled performance. The camshaft’s intake and exhaust lobes have fast opening ramps to keep port velocity high. As a result, the engine idles happily at 800 rpm and pulls 19 inches of vacuum. That results in excellent throttle response at low engine speeds and pulling power to 6,000 rpm. Topping all that off is a set of Ford Performance aluminum X-Heads with high swirl combustion chambers and an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake, to which we added a Holley Terminator Stealth EFI throttle body along with an MSD6 EFI ignition control to go with the MSD billet distributor.

Backing up the small-block Ford is an overdrive automatic from Hughes Performance. But rather than wearing a Blue Oval, this gearbox is dressed in a Bowtie. Hughes has found GM’s 4L60E and 4L80E transmissions are the ideal for performance applications, and thanks to their bellhousing system these transmissions can be installed behind a wide variety of non-GM, such as our small-block Ford engines, without the necessity for any bulky and poorly fitting adapters. These bellhousing systems are fully SFI-certified and allow the use of an original-style starter in the original position.

For our application we chose a Hughes 4L60E; it is physically smaller than the 4L80E, but still provides the strength and reliability necessary thanks to a number of modifications routinely made by Hughes. The OEM clutch plates are replaced with special high-coefficient one-sided frictions for longer life and greater reliability, and Kevlar bands co-developed with BorgWarner are installed for increased holding power. All lubrication and valvebody circuits are carefully inspected and modified for cooler and quicker operation.

As these transmissions do require electronics to operate, we installed a US Shift transmission management system from Baumann Electronic Controls. It represents the state of the art in electronic transmission control while still being cost-effective and easy to install. US Shift controllers are small in size but large in terms of their useful features, such as gearshift quality, timing, and converter lockup. A built-in three-character display with a rotary control monitors system parameters, such as transmission fluid temperature, current gear/mode, vehicle speed, TPS voltage, and battery voltage.

Our UP pickup is full of nostalgic touches and nothing drives that point home better than a Winters quick-change rearend. The aluminum V-8 centersection coupled with Winters’ steel tube and bell axle housings has the traditional look while the late-model axle flanges for either big Ford or Torino bearings allow the use of modern axles and brake assemblies. The quick-change gears are standard six-spline and are available with straight or helical-cut teeth.

Connecting the Hughes transmission to the Winters quick-change is a driveshaft from Dynotech. By filling out an order sheet with all the pertinent measurements, Dynotech will build a new driveshaft in steel, aluminum, composite, or hybrid materials and ship it to your door. In our case we chose a steel driveshaft, which are available in OEM seamed steel tubing or as an option for high-performance street and racing applications DOM (drawn over mandrel) seamless steel tubing.

Each year the STREET RODDER Road Tour combines our favorite elements of the hobby, driving our cars, seeing the country, and hanging out with friends.

Construction of our United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour ’32 pickup is in the capable care of Hot Rods by Dean (HRBD). Here is the Ford Performance Parts engine undergoing a testfit.

As delivered from Ford Performance Parts the X347D stroker is equipped with an Edelbrock manifold, MSD distributor, and Ford Performance Parts rocker covers. The vibration damper is SFI approved.

For a front drive system we chose a Vintage Air Front Runner. Beautifully built, this serpentine system provides rock-solid mounting points for the engine-driven accessories.

For style and strength ARP fasteners are used throughout the truck and include an engine dress-up kit with 12-point hardware.

The Vintage Air Front Runner includes a new alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump.

A testfit of the engine indicated the firewall would require modification and the oil filter interfered with the Flaming River steering box.

The oil filter clearance issue was resolve with a Ford Performance Parts 90 adapter.

To keep our 347-inch stroker motor cool, HRBD installed a radiator from U.S. Radiator that came with a shroud and an electric fan.

Ford Performance Parts includes an MSD billet distributor equipped with black Ford Racing 9mm spark plug wires.

The 950-cfm Holley Terminator Stealth EFI combines the efficiency of a throttle body with the classic look of a carburetor. It features a 4150 and self tunes while you drive.

MSD’s 6EFI Ignition Control is designed to work with electronic fuel injection systems. Its capacitive discharge technology will fire a series of multiple sparks for 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation when the engine is running at lower rpm.

Spent gases are removed via full-length Patriot Tri-Y headers. They feature 18-gauge tubing, thick flanges, and black high-temp coating. Note the ARP fasteners.

Hughes Performance supplied one of their bulletproof torque converters and GM 4L60E overdrive automatic transmissions equipped with a small-block Ford bellhousing.

Hughes makes a variety of improvements to all their transmissions, including enhanced friction materials.

Here the hybrid Ford/GM bellhousing can be seen. Each Hughes transmission wears a tag with the date it was built and the name of the technician who assembled it.

The US Shift Quick 4 transmission controller is mounted inside the UP pickup cab and will be hidden behind the right side kick panel.

Winters supplied the traditional quick-change centersection. While vintage Ford axle housings can be used, Winters offers new replacements.

No more tapered and keyed early Ford axles. The new Winters housings accept late Ford axle bearings and brakes.

While quick-change rearends are often used with an original-style torque, we opted for a more modern approach with an open driveline.

We chose a fully polished centersection. Shown is the standard rear cover, a finned version is also available. Changing the final gear ratio is simply a matter of removing the cover and changing the spur gears.

There are nearly four dozen numbered gearsets available, each offering a “high and low” combination. When used with a 3.78:1 ring-and-pinion, this set #15 can provide a 6.05:1 final drive.

Flipping the same gears over results in a 2.36:1 ratio. By comparison a set 3A would provide a 3.33:1 or a 4.30:1 final drive with the same 3.78:1 ring-and-pinion.

Dynotech supplies custom mail-order driveshafts in a variety of materials. Most common for street rods are steel and aluminum.

After the tubes are cut to length, the ends are installed and the assembly is trued.

With the ends pressed in place they are computer welded to the tube.

The final step in construction is computer balancing. All Dynotech driveshafts are guaranteed to be vibration-free.

As in years past, Road Tour rods use AMSOIL INC. synthetic products, including engine oil, trans fluid, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant, and chassis grease.

Lokar has been a part of the Road Tour from the beginning. This year’s truck is equipped with a variety of Lokar products, including the throttle cable.

Topping off our fuel-injected small-block Ford is a Holley aluminum air cleaner assembly.
