Reviewed: Renault Triber AMT
An in-depth test drive review of the Renault Triber AMT
The addition of an AMT lends more convenience and also makes the Renault Triber an even better package
The Renault Triber has the advantage of being one of the most affordable 7-seaters in the Indian market today. When we drove this car last, we did come out impressed with the packaging that is offered for the price. The lack of an automatic was a negative point, but recently Renault launched the Triber AMT, and we’re driving it to find out whether it has any aces up its sleeve or not!
Exterior
No cosmetic changes have been made to the Renault Triber AMT, and it looks similar to the manual variant. Of course, there’s an Easy-R badge at the rear, but that’s about it. The Triber is a compact 7-seater and measures under 4 metres in length, and yet it manages to look very proportionate. The styling is pleasant to look at, and the design has an “offend-none” feel. Renault also offers some nice colour options with the Triber. The vehicle gets 15-inch steel rims, which have been styled to look like alloys.
Interior
The interior of the AMT variant is again similar to the manual variant, with the only change being the new gear lever and the absence of a clutch. The instrument cluster has a gear position indicator, and it beeps a warning when you shift from N to D or R without pressing the brake pedal. Renault has very smartly packaged the cabin of this 7-seater, and it has decent space in all three rows. The Triber is also decently feature-loaded, and it gets 4 airbags, ABS, touch screen infotainment system, manual AC, power windows, projector headlamps, push-button start, 4 speakers + 2 tweeters, reverse camera, 12V charging socket in the third row, etc. in the top variant which is indeed impressive. The seats are also quite comfortable and at par with other cars in this price range. Renault has also given a lot of importance to storage spaces, which are plenty in the cabin.
Performance
The Renault Triber AMT gets a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, petrol engine from the Energy series. It is offered on the Kwid, but it gets Dual VVT on the Triber. This engine is tuned to deliver 53 kW at 6250 RPM and 96 Nm at 3500 RPM, which is the same output as the manual variant. The engine is quiet at low revs but gets vocal after you cross 2500 RPM. It’s a small unit but pulls the car decently. The Triber now gets a 5-speed AMT which feels smoother than the one on Kwid, but yes while up shifting you do feel the head-toss movement that is generally felt in AMTs. When you’re driving fast, gear shifts can feel slow, but when you’re easy on the throttle, it feels smoother and manageable. Downshifts are a bit slow so quick overtakes on the highway need to be planned, otherwise a slow-down shift in the middle of an overtaking manoeuvre can get on your nerves.
The AMT offers decently quick and smooth shifts when you’re easy on the throttle and also gets a manual mode The AMT offers decently quick and smooth shifts when you’re easy on the throttle and also gets a manual mode
There is a manual mode too, and it makes sense to use it on inclines or sometimes to get better control of the gears while overtaking. The engine offers decent driveability in the city, but the power delivery isn’t very punchy, in fact, power is delivered in a flat manner. The Triber won’t disappoint in day-to-day runs, but you might have to take control of the gears sometimes. Renault is also working on a 1.0 turbo petrol engine, and that one should really spice things up.

Renault is also working on a 1.0 turbo petrol engine, and that one should really spice things up.
Driving Dynamics
Just like other Renault cars, the Triber also comes with a very sorted suspension setup. The ride quality is really impressive, and travelling on bad roads doesn’t really unsettle the car or offer a tiring experience to the passengers. The 182 mm ground clearance comes in to be really handy. The steering isn’t as felt as some other Renault cars, and it is quite vague, but it feels very light while driving in the city. The brakes offer good bite and the brake pedal has good progression.
Verdict
The price of the Renault Triber AMT is totally worth it if you are someone who wants convenience and if you are going to drive the car in traffic regularly. This vehicle has always come across as a VFM offering. The Triber doesn’t have any 7-seater rival in this price bracket apart from the Datsun GO+ which is quite smaller in comparison and no longer available as a new vehicle.

Specs Comparison: 2021 Nissan And Renault SUVs
Tumblr media
The all-new Renault Kiger is the latest entrant into the highly competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment. It is based on the same architecture that underpins its Alliance cousin, the Nissan Magnite. But, how different is it exactly from its Japanese sibling, and what uniqueness does it bring to the segment? Here's a quick spec comparison between the two.
Design
Design certainly is a differentiating factor for the Renault Kiger, and the crossover styling sure brings a lot of freshness to the segment. It features the characteristic Renault DNA with flowing lines and a squat stance. The Nissan Magnite isn't far behind. In fact, the Magnite is the one that looks more like an SUV, among the two, with its upright stance and two-box design.
Underpinnings
Both the SUVs are based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's CMF-A+ platform. This is the same modular architecture that underpins the Renault Triber and may very well spawn quite a few cars for both companies in the years to come.
Engine Specifications
The Renault Kiger would be available with two petrol engines - a 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated motor and a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit. The former would make 72bhp and 96Nm, while the latter would produce 99bhp and 160Nm. The NA motor will be paired to a five-speed manual gearbox or an AMT, while the turbo-petrol will be available with a CVT, in addition to a manual unit.
Now, the Nissan Magnite, too, gets the same powertrains with similar power figures. But, while the turbo-petrol gets both, automatic and manual transmissions, the naturally-aspirated unit is only offered with a manual gearbox.
Price
While current Nissan 2021 models are highly competitively priced - Renault is coming in strong with their new vehicle pricing too. The Nissan Magnite is priced between R261,900 and R311,900. The Renault Kiger is priced between R199,900 and R289,900 - making it the most affordable compact SUV between the two and possible in SA!

The Best 7 Seater Cars in India
In a country which prides itself upon in its traditional culture & values, India has been a land of big families. However, cars that could accommodate these large families were few and far between until the 2010s when an explosion of 7 seater cars took the Indian market by storm. From MUVs to SUVs, car manufacturers have steadily improved their lineup of 7 seater cars to offer more for large families.
Tumblr media
Almost every manufacturer today offers a MUV or a SUV that can easily accommodate seven family members while transporting them in luxury. Gone are the days of cramming into a Maruti Suzuki Eeco or Omni to travel to the wedding. Today’s 7 seater cars are not only luxurious inside but are just as eye-catching as sedans on the outside. When you consider that you can buy a 7 seater MUV for the price of a sedan, there are some serious considerations to make.
In order to make your buying decision as simple as possible, we’ve curated the best 7 seater cars you can buy in India. This list is segmented into different budgets to help you choose the right MUV or SUV for your family.
Budget 7 Seater Car (₹5-10 lakhs)
When it comes to curating budget 7 seater cars in India, these usually are available at a price range of ₹5-10 lakhs (ex-showroom). These same cars are available for a lot less in the used car market. The budget 7 seater cars include new and used options for you to consider.
Renault Triber
Tumblr media
Renault seems to have adopted a ‘low cost, high quality’ approach to India and it appears to be working for the French manufacturer. After the Renault Kwid, the Renault Triber is their most popular model, and rightfully so.
Tumblr media
At a starting price of just ₹5.20 lakhs, the Renault Triber offers a lot of space and capability for its price. What will come as a surprise for many is that the Triber has a usable third row in its compact dimensions. The option of two additional airbags on top of the standard dual front airbags and ABS with EBD provides plenty of safety, making this compact MUV an ideal choice if safety is a priority. With a fuel efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine that offers 20 kmpl of mileage, the Triber is perfectly positioned as a great long distance family car.
Renault Triber Features
1.0-litre petrol engine producing 72 PS of power and 96 Nm of torque
Transmissions: 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT automatic transmission
625 litre boot space (without third row)
8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Seating for 6-7 adults
Honda BR-V
Tumblr media
The first of the two Honda 7 seaters, the Honda BR-V is the MUV for those looking for more premium interiors on a budget. However, since the BR-V has been discontinued, your best bet to owning one is to buy it pre-owned.
Tumblr media
The Honda BR-V is an exceptionally practical car in this budget. The interiors inherit Honda’s high quality and premium materials that elevate the passenger experience significantly. The Honda BR-V serves well as a highway cruiser as it is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine with the option of a CVT automatic transmission. While the passengers enjoy the comfortable seats, you can enjoy driving the powerful Honda on the highway.
Honda BR-V Features
1.5-litre petrol engine producing 117 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque
1.5-litre diesel engine producing 99 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque
Transmissions: 6-speed manual transmission and CVT automatic transmission
223 litre (with third row) or 691 litre boot space (without third row)
Seating for 7 adults
Honda Mobilio
Tumblr media
The predecessor to the BR-V, the Honda Mobilio was Honda’s foray into the 7 seater MUV market. Featuring a front facade similar to the Brio and Amaze, the Mobilio offered plenty of space for 7 people.
Tumblr media
With the same 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines as the BR-V, you can expect the same highway performance from the Mobilio. The Honda Mobilio, however, doesn’t have an automatic transmission, which reduces the potential convenience of owning this car. Where you gain is in the significantly lower price you can find used Honda Mobilio cars as compared to used Honda BR-V cars. For the price of a hatchback, you can get yourself a 7 seater Honda Mobilio for your family.
Honda Mobilio Features
1.5-litre petrol engine producing 117 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque
1.5-litre diesel engine producing 99 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque
Transmissions: 6-speed manual transmission
223 litre (with third row) or 521 litre boot space (without third row)
Seating for 6-7 adults
2015 Toyota Innova
Tumblr media
The segment king for the last decade has been the Toyota Innova. However, in this budget, your choices would be limited to used Toyota Innova cars from 2015 and earlier. Even as a used car, the Innova presents excellent value for those looking for it.
Tumblr media
Toyota’s famed reliability is what makes the Innova such a great value proposition. The power and reliability of the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.5-litre diesel engine ensure the Innova is perfectly at home on long cruises. Combined with comfortable and premium interiors, make even an used Innova very attractive to own. It’s fair to say that the used Toyota Innova still poses a significant competition for MUVs under ₹10 lakhs.
Toyota Innova Features
2.0-litre petrol engine producing 130 PS of power and 181 Nm of torque
2.5-litre diesel engine producing 101 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque
Transmissions: 5-speed manual transmission
300 litre (with third row) or 760 litre (without third row) boot space
Seating for 6-7 adults
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
India’s value king has a MUV built specifically for this price bracket. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been immensely successful in capturing the market vacated by the Toyota Innova.
Tumblr media
Despite its size, the lightweight construction and car-like driveability make it especially suited for the city. Combined with a usable third row and plenty of interior space, the Maruti Ertiga is perfectly positioned as a people mover for the city. The Ertiga comes equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engine, both of which are economical for city and highway use. The interiors of the Ertiga are also more towards comfort and practicality rather than premium. However, in this price bracket, the Maruti Ertiga offers a lot of value for those looking for a capable 7 seater MUV.
Tumblr media
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Features
1.5-litre petrol engine producing 103 PS of power and 138 Nm of torque
1.5-litre diesel engine producing 89 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque
7-inch touchscreen infotainment display
Transmissions: 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission
209 litre (with third row) or 550 litre (without third row) boot space
Seating for 6-7 adults

Details On Renault's New SUV - The Kiger
The newly launched Renault Kiger offers segment-first features at a price level that’s actually not believable - under R200,000!
The five-seater SUV adds to the current line-up of Renault cars in SA which include the Kwid, Duster, Captur and Triber.
The new sub-4m compact SUV is designed in India and is built to take on competition such as Hyundai Venue, Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
Tumblr media
In terms of aesthetics, the front fascia of the SUV gets split LED headlamps with the DRLs on top. The tail-light gets a c-shaped LED to accentuate the width of the car. The car has 16-inch alloys or steel wheels depending on the variant. The wheels sit under flared wheel-arches which gives the car an SUV stance.
In terms of features on the interior, Renault Kiger has an 8-inch touch screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with Bluetooth and WIFI connection. The Renault Kiger also has ‘Multi-sense’ settings that allow the driver to choose different driving modes, a sound setup by Arkamys audio system and a rearview camera with guidance lines for parking. Adding to the modernness of the cabin is a 7-inch digital instrument console for all the vital information to be displayed to the driver.
In terms of powertrain options, the new Kiger has an offering similar to the Nissan Magnite. Buyers have an option to either purchase a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. The turbocharged variant is able to produce 73 kW of power and 160Nm of peak torque, whereas the naturally aspirated engine puts out just 53 kW of power along with 96Nm of peak torque. Apart from 5-speed manual transmission, the company also offers both AMT and CVT variants for buyers looking for automatic transmission.

Renault Triber Turbo Petrol Expectations
Turbo Petrol cars are slowly on the rise, especially in India. Every car manufacturer is trying to provide some form of turbo petrol option for people under the budget. In spite of being quite affordable, most of the cars in this segment pack a punch. Renault Triber when launched was highly criticized for its underpowered engine. However, things can change very soon. Find out below about the Renault Triber Turbo Petrol expectations.
Current and Expected Engine
Name                   Current Engine              Expected Engine
Engine Type:         1.0-litre Petrol engine   HRA0 1.0 Turbo Petrol
Displacement:            999cc                       999cc
Max. Power:                72bhp                      99bhp
Max. Torque:              96Nm                       160Nm
Mileage:                     20 km/l                      20 km/l
Currently, the Triber comes with a manual gearbox and an AMT, at Group1  Renault. We might see the new engine only offered with a manual unit.
As it is clear from the table above the new expected engine will be quite an adequate upgrade. We expect the Nissan Magnite Turbo petrol engine to make an appearance in the Triber. The company may provide both manual and automatic transmission options. If launched,  it will compete against Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz Turbo plus compact SUVs like the Nissan Magnite and Maruti Vitara Brezza. As the Triber is a completely different segment altogether, much comparison cannot be made between the cars. More about Triber Turbo Petrol Expectations below.
Design and Changes
The current Renault Triber comes with 14/15-inch wheels which are efficiency-oriented and get the job done. Renault in its attempt to attract new customers may provide 16-inch alloy wheels along with a new alloy design. You can also expect some form of turbo badging throughout the car.
Coming to the aesthetic appeal, the new Renault Triber Turbo Petrol is expected to get bigger spoilers, side skirts, and a blacked-out front grille. Like the other turbo petrol cars sold in India, the Renault Triber too will be available in bright colour options. The interiors of the car may also see some modifications. Higher trims can get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with some form of connected car technology. The sunroof will also be a great inclusion at this price point.

Best SUV Cars under ₹15 lakhs in 2021
SUVs have taken India by storm with sales steadily being higher than hatchbacks and sedans. A Sports Utility Vehicle or SUV usually refers to any car that has a high ground clearance, soft off-roading capabilities, and spacious interiors. A quick look at the current cars offered by the manufacturers in India, there are three clear segments within the SUV car segment. This segmentation offers customers the opportunity of owning the best SUV car at their budget.
If you’re looking for SUVs in India, there are plenty of options to choose from. For the purpose of this buying guide, the SUVs will be segmented according to their price categories. These are the best SUV under 15 lakhs in India 2021.
Best Micro SUV
The micro SUV segment is a very recent introduction to the SUV car segment. These cars are not true SUVs but instead are small hatchbacks with high ground clearance and SUV-like styling. Considering these are technically hatchbacks, micro SUVs are also the most affordable in this segment.
Renault Kwid
The Renault Kwid is the pioneer of this segment, providing a SUV-like experience at a fraction of the cost of an actual SUV. In many ways, the Kwid’s USP is that it’s a very different kind of entry level car that many find appealing.
Tumblr media
With the Kwid you get a decently high ground clearance and a muscular exterior design that gives it an appearance of a small SUV. A choice of fuel efficient engines combined with manual and automatic transmission options make the Kwid ideal as a compact city car. The interior also offers plenty of space with essential features like dual front airbags and touchscreen infotainment system. All this at a price range starting from just ₹3.12 lakhs.
Renault Kwid Features
Engine options: 0.8-litre petrol engine | 1.0-litre petrol engine
Transmission: 5-speed manual transmission | 5-speed AMT
Mileage: 20.71 kmpl (0.8-litre) | 21.74 kmpl (1.0-litre)
Boot space: 279 litres
Ground Clearance: 184 mm
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso
For once, it was Maruti that had to respond to competition and the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is the answer to the Kwid. Like the Kwid, the S-Presso is a fresh take on what an entry level car should be and it has found its place in the Indian market.
Tumblr media
Unlike the Kwid, however, the S-Presso does not pair its high ground clearance with a muscular exterior body. Renault Triber Features | That Makes it Perfect Car for Long Drive
Renault TRIBER features and its price became a big draw with Indian families the moment it was launched. After all, as someone once said, the journey is as important as the destination itself. And the Renault TRIBER makes sure that every journey becomes a memorable one.
Let us identify the top Renault TRIBER features that made the car India’s favorite family car:
Modular Seating:
Unlike the other 7-seaters, the TRIBER comes with an industry-first modular seating arrangement. The modular seating capability can transform the car into a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or a 7-seater within seconds. This effectively means that the car’s interior can be adjusted to one's requirement to accommodate passengers, luggage, or both.
Unmatched Space
The car comes with a 625 Liters of boot space. Additionally, it has 31 Litres of internal storage space to keep all your travel essentials. However, what makes the car spacious is the sliding & reclining 2nd row. This not only provides ample headroom and legroom for the front two rows but even for adults seated in the last row!
Exteriors
Best-in-class ground clearance of 182 mm makes the car ideal for Indian road conditions. Also, a triple edge chrome grille with LED projector headlamps glow the road ahead at night, and the eagle beak split rear lamps make heads turn.
Interiors
The Renault TRIBER features a 20.32 cm touch screen, twin ac vents for both 2nd and 3rd rows, an LED instrument cluster, a cooled central storage console, and a smartly designed interior that make the car comfortable even on during long journeys.
Sub 4-meter length
While most cars had to stretch themselves to accommodate seven passengers, the Renault TRIBER fits them comfortably under a 4-meter length. This smaller length not only makes the car agile & nimble but also makes parking in tight spots and driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions a lot easier.
Price
The biggest draw was the car’s price. The Renault TRIBER starts at just Rs. 5.76 Lacs (ex. Showroom Delhi), whereas the next 7-seater starts at Rs. 7.5 Lacs onwards!
