HOW TO: Make an iPhone Layout + Downloadable Template

Hi! I've gotten a few messages asking for a tutorial on my iPhone gifsets — but instead of only doing a tutorial (that would probably be triple the length this one already is), I decided to turn my layout into a template with all the bits and bobs! In the "tutorial" under the cut, I'll share everything you'll need, a free template download, and quickly go over how to use this template. :)

Disclaimer: This template uses Video Timeline and this tutorial assumes you have a basic to intermediate understanding of Photoshop.

PHASE 1: THE ASSETS

1.1 – Download fonts. These are the fonts used for all assets I've included in my template: – SF Pro or SF Pro Display (Regular, Medium, Bold): Either version works, they look nearly identical. You can download directly from https://developer.apple.com/fonts/ or easily find it via Google – Bebas Neue: Free on Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts, and dafont – Times New Roman (Bold): Should be a default font in Photoshop

Make sure to download and install any of the fonts you don't already have before opening my template. That way, once you open the template file, all the settings (font size, weight, spacing, color, opacity, etc.) are as intended.

1.2 – Download my template. Before you use my template, all I ask is that you don't claim or redistribute it as your own and that you give me proper credit in the caption of your post. Making these iPhone gifsets takes me a longgg time and turning this layout into a template took several hours too.

PHASE 2: THE GIFS

I'm just going to briefly go over gif sizes and my recommendations. Also, keep in mind when grabbing your scenes, you'll want all of these gifs to be the same amount of frames.

2.1 – Background Gif: 540 x 540 px. I recommend this size so you have a good amount of visibility for the gif behind the iPhone wallpaper. I also recommend making this black and white (or in my case, black and white with a slight blue tint — idk I just like the way it looks) so the wallpaper coloring can stand out.

2.2 – Wallpaper Gif: 230 (w) x 500 (h) px. Keep in mind the very narrow dimensions of the wallpaper! And also keep in mind that you'll have a bunch of apps and widgets covering the image. I try to use wide shots (or layer my clips into looking like wide shots). Also, keep in mind your color scheme for your set and your character's aesthetic! I tend to focus on one or two colors for the wallpaper.

I usually position the wallpaper to the side with 20px bumpers, so there's lots of space to see the background:

2.3 – Large Photo Widget Gif: 201 (w) x 96 (h) px.

2.4 – Small Photo Widget Gif: 94 x 94 px.

PHASE 3: THE TEMPLATE – "IPHONE" FOLDER

In this section, I'll try to quickly walk you through how to use this template and some bits that may require extra instructions. I'll be going through each folder from top to bottom.

3.1 – Status Bar. Time, Service, and WiFi are pretty self-explanatory. In the Battery folder, you can use the shape tool to adjust the shape layers labeled "Fill (Adjustable Shape!)" to customize the battery level.

3.2 – Message Notification. Again, these are pretty self-explanatory. I've already masked the circle for the contact photo, so you can simply import any photo and use the transform tool to shrink it down. The circle is 24x24 px. If you don't want to use a photo, there's another folder called Default Initials.

If your message text can't fit the text box, the message should end with ellipses which is how iOS caps off long texts.

3.3 – Blurred Banner (IMPORTANT) This folder is easy to miss because there's only one placeholder layer in there. On iPhones, the area behind a banner notification and the dock get blurred (including the wallpaper and any apps).

What to do: Make a duplicate of the apps in Row 1 and/or widgets that intersect the message banner, convert them all into one smart object, apply a Gaussian Blur filter (Radius: 3.0 pixels) on the smart object, and move the smart object into this masked folder!

(There's another masked folder in the Wallpaper folder for the dock which I'll go over in that section.)

3.4 – Apps Turn off the yellow guide if you don't need it to keep things aligned and turn off layers you don't need by clicking the eye icon. Replace the "App" placeholder text with your app name, change the color or gradient of the square to compliment your color scheme, and add your custom app icon overlay!

If you can't find an app icon you need from the ones I provided, flaticon.com is a great resource. Also, if you can only find the filled version of an icon, check out this tutorial for how to make any text or shape into an outline.

Also, each app folder has 4 notification bubble options (1-4 digits). Again, you can toggle these on and off as you need!

3.5 – Big Widgets I like using these when my wallpaper has A LOT of negative space to fill. I included the Photos and Books widgets in my template, but there are lots of widgets available on iPhones. You can check some of the other ones I've done here, or if you have an iPhone, simply try adding some widgets to your phone!

There are also widgets bigger than these, but they would take up half of the phone screen which is why I don't use them for these edits.

3.6 – Small Widgets The only thing I'll say about these — because they're pretty straight forward — is there are a lot more weather themes than I included in my template. Also, if you set your character's phone to evening, the weather widget will show a dark background (sometimes with stars), so keep that in mind.

Speaking of, I've included Light Modes and Dark Modes for, I think, every applicable widget.

3.7 – Page Dots These barely perceptible dots indicate that your character has more pages of apps than shown in your gifset (so if an anon tries to come at you, you can just say "it's on the next page of apps" /j /lh)

3.8 – Dock Again, the dock has notification bubble options and I've included the default app designs, custom filled designs, and custom outlined designs for iMessage, Phone, Email, and Safari (there's also a FaceTime alternative if that's how your character rolls). These are usually the apps people keep in their Dock, but this is fully customizable too. So, if your character is, like, super obsessed with Candy Crush or something and needs it in thumb's reach — you can put it in the dock.

3.9 – Wallpaper This whole folder is masked already to a 230x500 px rounded rectangle.

Inside, you'll find another "Blurred Portion" folder for the area behind the message banner notification and the dock.

What to do: Duplicate your gif layer and place it in this folder, remove any sharpening filters, and apply a Gaussian Blur filter (Radius: 3.0 px). Be sure to add any coloring/adjustment layers ABOVE this folder and your original sharpened gif layer.

PHASE 4: EXPORT

We made it!

Priority Research 7 Predictions - Ironblood

Screw it. Time to speculate who the mandatory Ironblood PR is going to be.

As always, these are just the possible options, alongside speculation about their rarity - either PR (Priority Research/SSR) or DR (Decivise Research/UR), and maybe some vague idea about what their skills could be in Azur Lane.

The Ironblood have, perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of options; just like the Northern Parliament.

KMS Mecklenburg

Fuck it. Let's start strong.

Mecklenburg is, essentially, a battlecruiser. She shares her hull with both Preussen and Großer Kurfürst, however, the main difference with both of those ships (Preussen having eight 457mm guns and G.K having twelve 406mm or 420mm guns (depending on your setup)), is that Mecklenburg has sixteen 305mm guns. With a 26 second reload. And an anomalously high (for a German battleship) main gun accuracy.

This thing is a ludicrously effective cruiser hunter. She has fast shells with an almost pin-point accuracy.

Mecklenburg also has two quadruple torpedo launchers, one per side, on top of the standard highly efficient secondary gun layout comprising of 128mm gun turrets that enjoy German 1/4 HE penetration rules. Oh, also, she's faster than both Preussen and G.K (both doing 30 knots), at a top speed of 32.5 knots.

Yeah, Mecklenburg is easy DR material.

KMS Schröder

Schröder is a personal favorite of mine. You can think of her as a "mini-Prinz Rupprecht".

As a supercruiser, Schröder has eight 305mm main guns in dual turrets. She has no torpedo armament to speak of. Her gimmick(s) lay on the fact that Schröder is one of the best secondary gun cruisers in the game, rivaling both Napoli and Michelangelo (which We'll Get To in the Sardegnan post). A total of 5 dual 128mm gun turrets per side as well as a total of 3 triple 150mm gun turrets (the same ones Nürnberg has in total), and a maximum range of 12km; Schröder has very fun secondary guns.

On top of that, she gets access to a very high base speed of 32.5 knots and a speed boost consumable that boosts her speed by 15% for 3 minutes. Schröder is great at flanking as she can relocate from one side of the map to the other in a relatively short time.

Honestly, she works as either a PR or a DR; but I would prefer her being a DR.

KMS Manfred von Richthofen and KMS Max Immelmann

I'm putting them together as equally likely DR candidates for a simple reason: the only thing that differs is their air complement.

To simplify Richthofen; she's a bigger August von Parseval. Both are carrier conversions of the H-39 battleship design (so, Friederich der Große sisterships).

Max Immelmann only has access to torpedo bombers and skip bombers - the same kind of bombers found on the Soviet aircraft carrier line (so, Chkalov).

Richthofen is a standard research ship and Immelmann is a premium ship. Immelmann was over-hyped by the community as a much superior carrier to Richthofen (the entire tech tree line of German CVs is impressively bad), but she's mediocre at best. Honestly, the funniest thing you can do with both carriers is a full secondary gun build; but Graf Zeppelin is much better at that at Tier 8 than these two at Tier 10.

However, Azur Lane has a track record of taking mediocre-at-best warships and turning them into very good PRs; so if any of the two gets chosen, I have hopes.

KMS Z42

From my cursory two-minute-long Google search, it seems Z42 in this configuration was never planned - or that there was never a Z42 to begin with, I can't find concrete info on that (again, after looking at it for two minutes. I'm sure there is actual info somewhere).

Z42 is a surprisingly good little ship. Her torpedoes are rubbish, but they're not the star of the show. Z42 utilizes German 105mm secondary guns as her main guns - here they are on the sides of Bismarck:

These funny little guns share the standard German 1/4 penetration rules for their HE, meaning that despite the smaller caliber they deal a considerable amount of damage. On top of that, they get access to AP; a thing that doesn't exist when they're in secondary gun form, and this AP does very funny damage against anything broadside.

She's PR material, just like Felix Schultz, but she could be a very good mini-Roon in terms of gameplay and abilities in Azur Lane.

KMS Wiesbaden

To me, this is the 'fuck it we ball' option. Wiesbaden is still in testing, she isn't in the game yet; but I believe she might release very soon.

Wiesbaden is a T8 light cruiser equipped with 6 dual 128mm gun turrets. That's right, she's a German Atlanta!

While Atlanta and Flint have a 4.8 second and 5.1 second reload respectively, Wiesbaden "enjoys" a 6 second reload on her main guns. However, that is compensated greatly by the fact that as all other HE guns from Germany, she has - you guessed it - 1/4 pen on HE shells, as well as six torpedo tubes per side with an 8.5km range. Oh, and a smoke screen generator. Like a destroyer.

Undoubtedly, Wiesbaden would be a PR in rarity.

KMS Preussen

Finally, the Roon-to-Hindenburg analogue of Friederich der Große. Preussen is an enlarged Friederich der Große, a made-up modification of the H-42 design with 457mm main guns. The real H-42 design isn't present in World of Warships; however, H-43 is the Superbattleship Hannover. But that's besides the point.

Preussen is a bigger FdG, so why her? We already have FdG and she's already a DR. This option is more based on vibes than anything else, as Hindenburg is a bigger, better Roon. Preussen could be the same: imagine a battleship that can equip two main guns instead of just one. Also, it's been a few years since PR2. PR7 is as far away from PR2 as PR6 was from PR1, and Roon was a PR1 shipgirl.

I don't know. She's more of a random guess. G.K is more likely, but I'd prefer Mecklenburg over G.K personally.

The halls were just as twisted as they always were. Past the empty dining hall, there was no telling what direction the group was headed. Even with Aloe leading the way, the one assumed to have the most knowledge on the layout, they'd often have to double and triple check where they were… if they even knew. At least there was some actual time to think, considering the halls were empty. 

Oddly… entirely empty. Not a single soul was wandering around here. Aloe would hum in thought, leading the crew through turn after turn. "The fact that there is not a single soul out… it's suspicious." 

"Like they're expecting us?" Lemon said sharply, not shifting from his readied stance. Prepared to kill at a moment's notice. "Are they planning a sneak attack? Crowding up to give us the jump?" 

Aloe shook their head, though they couldn't help but be the slightest bit entertained by the prospect. "Never. Their amount of coordination couldn't take down a sitting target, let alone four whole moving targets. You've never seen what they're like when they're let out to find food… but it's like toddlers stumbling over one another." There was a light sigh from the researcher as they peeked around the next turn. "Long story short… everyone is likely in hiding to remain as such. Hidden from us." 

Mint would wave his hand to silently get Aloe's attention. Once their many eyes were on him, he'd stammer, idly toying with the weapon in his hands. "Uh, where… Where are we going, exactly? Is there a, um, a master bedroom or something we're going to find Roguefort in?" 

The many-eyed creature would look out into the next hall again, then look back as stolid as usual. "We are going into the deeper depths. I am certain they would want to be dramatic if they're not actively seeking us out and were preparing for our arrival. There is the stony prison you're familiar with, but… there is a way to go deeper. No one has ever been permitted in there, so… I see no reason why they wouldn't hide in there for theatrics." 

Lemon would groan, having a few small sparks coming from him. "That's so stupid. Who the fuck cares about how much flaire they'll have? They're gonna die either way." Caramel would give a soft laugh, "I-I mean… it's like- it's like a f-final boss in a video game… I guess th-they want it to be very… final? Last s-stand-ish?" 

"Nerd." Lemon huffed, rustling Caramel's hair. Not smiling, but clearly happy to hear him.

"H-hey! It's not like y-you didn't make an entire outfit for h-hunting and–" 

"Sh! Shh." Lemon would swiftly put a hand just above Caramel's mouth, trying to hush him. "There's a reason for that. Look, let's just… let's just get going." 

Aloe and Mint both looked upon the two's interaction, the musician winding up smiling before the group would continue to press on. Empty hall after empty hall, alight with shining candles on the walls, the deep turquoise becoming a bit of a grating color to look at through every similar looking hall. It was only when the coldness of stone met against the edge of the blue-green carpeting that there was freedom from the cool colors of the mansion… only to be met with no color at all. 

Chilling stone steps, colorless rocky walls, the dull metal bars meant for captives to be stuck behind… and dust visibly in the air from lack of care, too, gave the whole place an atmosphere of despair. Caramel couldn't help but latch onto Lemon's arm, too familiar with the state of being behind those bars. It was almost as if he could feel the blood being drained from him again, a shiver going over him. 

…being behind the other two, Lemon didn't mind pausing to give the other a hug and a gentle pet on the head, eyes averted to ensure his bout of affection wasn't seen. "You'll be fine. I promise." He murmured, pulling away and offering his arm for Caramel to properly hold, being held firmly by the nerd with a nervous smile… though it wouldn't be held for long. 

Loud skittering would be heard from one of the cells, a sudden sound that seemed to shake even Aloe. "Get back!" They ordered, holding their arms out as buzzing resounded and insectoid legs started to exit the containment in front of them. Mint would dart back, joining Caramel behind Lemon as the blonde would raise his knife to where the enemy was emerging from. 

From broken wings that flittered to a bent proboscis, the monster that emerged was massive in scale. Merely standing with its flesh-costed torso and vein-covered insectoid limbs boasted a height tall enough to nearly press against the ceiling. It hissed out some grotesque noise as it would face Aloe, swiftly attempting to stab at it with its broken piece. Though with such clunky movement, Aloe easily ducked out of the way, taking the commanding lead. "Lemon! Above the proboscis!" 

"The what?!" The electrical hunter said, surprisingly hesitating for once… and nearly letting Aloe get hit as the creature approached and continued to try and brutally jab at the researcher. 

"The head! Is that not obvious?! Destroy it, or it just might destroy us!" 

Lemon would let out a grunt, instinctively reaching back to grab Mint's blood vial that he's kept on his wrist, yanking it with little thought to the yelp that Mint gave as he chucked it against the ceiling. Praise be to whatever diety there may be, the creature that's entire body convulsed with any small movement would lift its attention to the blood splatter, connection between the head and torso exposed. 

With a running start, Lem would jump and grab onto the creature's strange chest fuzz. holding tight to avoid being thrown off by its thrashing, before promptly climbing through the mess of what felt like unnaturally and sporadically grown hair mixed with insect-like fur. It would take him seconds before he made it to the opening, slashing open what he assumed to be the creature's 'throat' and promptly letting himself drop to the floor afterward, scrambling away and grabbing Aloe to drag back with him while the creature sprayed out blackened blood. It's limbs reached up, distorted chittering coming from the creature as it seemed to try and cover its own wound… before stumbling to what might be considered a 'kneel', and promptly falling to the ground. Not dead, but still dying. 

"Fuck…" Lemon would heave, rubbing off some of the blood that had gotten on his face during the process. The blackened parts were like splotches… oddly thick and hardened. "The hell is that thing?" 

No answer would be given at that moment, letting a terrored silence fall over the group. Aloe would hold Co tight to their chest, letting the quiet pass before saying anything. Hesitantly, they spoke. "That is… one of my experiments." Attention focused on Aloe, shocked expressions gouging into them, they kept their gaze averted in shame. "I have made many horrific creatures, to… to try and cure what I thought was within my capabilities." They remember back to Roguefort, telling them that there was no way to cure this plague brought up on Co and themself… how their efforts were fruitless. "I… had thought they were locked away in the deepest depths of the manor, never to be released… but it seems that Roguefort had other plans. How troublesome…" 

"Well, hey, think of it this way-" Mint would interject, trying to shake off the fear that was still running through his system. "If this one went down so easily, then um… we sure can take on the rest! That and, uh… maybe… maybe the other people that became monsters like this will go back to normal? Maybe-..." As weak of an attempt that it was, Aloe was still able to raise their gaze. They weren't smiling, but it was better than being in despair. "Fixing my mistakes, one could call it. Fair enough." The plant person straightened up, looking ahead. "I do not expect anyone to forgive me, but to at least repent in this way… I will accept it." 

Mint smiled and nodded, approaching Aloe and looking up at them with a twinkle in his eye. "Yes! We, uh, none of us really asked for this, so- even if you did do th-" 

SQUEAK! 

The sound of a small animal caught the group off-guard. Instinctively, Lemon rushed in front of everyone, brandishing his knife and unknowingly hissing. He stood at-arms, prepared to attack whatever was there… only to see a little bat fly into the view of the group lazily. It would look at the group, smiling before twirling itself around and having its cape reveal the flirtatious redhead. 

"Uhh… meowwww?" Vampire slurred, as if he hadn't startled the four of them. "What's uuup? I thought you guys wanted out of here… couldn't get enough of me, huuuh?" 

Caramel cocked a brow, mouth pursed. "I don't even know you…"

"Not yeeeet you don't. I'm sure we could over a few drinks aaand-" The knife that was pointed at his bat form was promptly placed closer to his neck. Lemon wasn't having any flirting go on here, it seems. "Oh, huh. Saaad… still though, this knife isn't telling me why you're aaaaall back here." 

"Um," Mint butted in, gently setting a hand on Lemon's arm to put the weapon down. "We're going to, uh… kill Roguefort. That's- that's the plan, at least." 

Vampire let his mouth fall agape, cartoonishly surprised. He'd then chuckle, chortle, absolutely start having a laughing fit. "And here I thought no one would ever even try! Sure, I'll humor you guys. I'm sure you guys will do just fine in taking them down." 

The blonde would growl, finally fully letting down his weapon to cross his arms defiantly. "You say no one would ever try. Why didn't you?" 

Vamp would pause, one of his hands going down to fidget with a pocket as his gaze averted. "Reasons…" 

"Whatever…" Lem waved the excuse off, not bothering to even look at the drunkard. "How are you even going to help us? What, do you know their exact location and can take us there?" 

"Uhhhh… yeaaa? Why wouldn't I?" 

"...okay, sure, then fucking get to it, beast." 

Vamp would chuckle and shrug, "Whateeeever you say, bossyface."
