The showy spikes of lavender, lipped flowers of Plectranthus 'Plepalila' (Swedish ivy, spur-flower, Mona Lavender) result from a cross between two South African perennial evergreen species, Plectranthus saccatus and Plectranthus hilliardiae ssp. autrale 'Magwa'. The leaves are dark green with a purple underside and the plants are tender and should only be placed outside after risk of frost has passed.

The Tillandsia usneoides (Spanish moss, grandpa's beard) was thriving in the humid atmosphere of this tropical glasshouse. This epiphyte is native to the forest habitats of the southern United States and some parts of central and South America. The long, cascading stems of silvery green foliage need indirect sunlight and a moist atmosphere as they grow without being rooted in growing media.

so a few weeks ago I completed a life-long dream to experience a tropical rainforest firsthand. I had the privilege to get to visit a fairly remote scientific research station in the Peruvian Amazon as an opportunity provided by my degree scheme. needless to say, it was an incredible experience and the biodiversity was astounding, but one thing I particularly enjoyed about it was the sensory experience too.

I'd always wondered what a tropical rainforest would actually smell like. the closest I could imagine was that rich moist smell of tropical glasshouses like in botanical gardens, butterfly farms, that sort of thing. I was surprised that it actually DID smell like that in the Amazon - just this really composty scent of things rapidly decomposing and new things growing from that.

it was super neat to see as someone who's really fascinated both scientifically and creatively with decay, because decomposition really is just different in this sort of environment than in the temperate British habitats I'm accustomed to. I was talking to my friend about it last night and he described rainforest soils as having "high metabolisms" - they're the endotherms of the soil world. I love that as a way of describing the incredibly rapid decomposition turnover in these habitats.
