Taken as a divine sign, soldiers regained their hopes of escaping alive from that deadly trap. Fray García de Santiesteban asked that all the soldiers dedicate a Salve and a procession to him.

At dawn on December 8, 1585, the impossible occurs. The Meuse is frozen and Holac's fleet is trapped. The Spaniards without hesitation threw themselves into the "boarding" crossing the ice. Seeing how his fleet was attacked by the Spanish Infantry soldiers, Admiral Holac said "It seems that God is Spanish by working, for me, such a great miracle" when he was defeated in the Battle of Empel.

Centuries later this day, the Immaculate Conception of Mary was proclaimed patron of the Spanish Tercios, current Spanish Infantry.

El 7 de diciembre de 1585, el Tercio del Maestre de Campo Francisco Arias de Bobadilla, compuesta por unos cinco mil hombres, combatía en la isla de Bommel, situada entre los ríos Mosa y Waal, bloqueada por completo por la escuadra del almirante Filips van Hohenlohe-Neuenstein.

La situación era desesperada para los Tercios españoles y el enemigo propuso una rendición honrosa pero la respuesta española fue clara: «Los infantes españoles prefieren la muerte a la deshonra. Ya hablaremos de capitulación después de muertos» Abrieron los diques de los ríos para inundar el campamento y ahogarlos a todos y no quedó más tierra firme que el montecillo de Empel, donde se refugiaron los soldados.

«Estando un devoto soldado español haciendo un hoyo en el dique para resguardarse debajo de la tierra del mucho aire que hacía y de la artillería que los navíos enemigos disparaban, a las primeras azadonadas que comenzó a dar saltó una imagen de la limpísima y pura Concepción de Nuestra Señora, pintada en una tabla, tan vivos y limpios los colores y matices como si se hubiera acabado de hacer. Acudieron otros soldados con grandísima alegría...»

Tomada como una señal divina soldados recuperaron las esperanzas de escapar con vida de aquella trampa mortal. Fray García de Santiesteban pidió que todos los soldados le dedicasen un Salve y una procesion.

Al amanecer del dia 8 de diciembre de 1585, se produce lo imposible. El Mosa aparece congelado y la flota de Holac quedó atrapada. Los españoles sin dudarlo se lanzaron al “abordaje” atravesando el hielo. Al ver como su flota era atacada por los soldados de Infantería Española, el Almirante Holac dijo  «Tal parece que Dios es español al obrar, para mí, tan grande milagro» al ser derrotado en la Batalla de Empel.

Siglos después este día, la Inmaculada Concepción de María fue proclamada patrona de los Tercios españoles, actual Infantería Española.
