The Boy from Clearwater: Book 1 by Yu Pei-Yun and Zhou Jian-Xin (illustrator) (translated by Lin King)
Review:
The Boy from Clearwater (published by Levine Querido in November 2023) is a YA graphic biography written by historian Yu Pei-Yun and illustrated by Zhou Jian-Xin. It is a poignant Odessey about the life of Tsai Kun-lin, a (real-life) young man arrested during the White Terror for his association with a political book club. Beginning with Kun-lin's childhood, readers experience tender childhood moments of sneaking sugar cane along with the confusion and chaos surrounding the Japanese and Chinese occupations of Taiwan.
Overall, this is a solid graphic novel with a lot of educational value. The years of Kun-lin's life are intersected with notes regarding the many political shifts and thought movements occurring during his childhood and early adulthood.
I loved how the translators differentiated the different languages being used through the color of the text--it added a deeper emotional element to the whole thing, especially in chapters where the characters who grew up in a Japan-occupied Taiwan struggled to communicate with their older peers. I was particularly touched by how this element related to Kun-lin's father and the difficulties he endures in the "background" of the novel. Throughout, Kun-lin's once-rebel father expresses subdued sadness about the desecration of Hoklo Taiwanese and its connections to traditional Taiwanese culture (there is a particularly thoughtful scene in which he checks in on Kun-lin's studying, speaking Hoklo, before shifting to Chinese after Kun-lin expresses the need to meet Chinese standards). I reread the book just to take notes to see how the different languages weaved in and out of each other and the larger meaning in that tapestry.
It would be impossible not to highlight the work of Zhou Jian-Xin, the graphic novel's illustrator. The hand-penciled artwork was both refreshing and gut-wrenching in its unflinching portrayal of Kun-Lin's struggles and the beauty of Taiwan. I appreciated the combination of hand-drawn and print techniques the artist utilized, especially in the application of heavy, dark linocut prints to depict Green Island. Zhou Jian-Xin's portfolio can be found here: Jian-Xin Zhou – Literarische Agentur (mertinwitt-litag.de)
I did find myself wishing that the novel contained more insight into Tsai Kun-lin and the people around him. While we get hints of who they were as people and their struggles, the biography invests more time in summarizing events than investing in personal portrayals of its figures. The real Tsai Kun-lin became a human rights activist after his imprisonment and was very vocal about his political opinions. It seemed like a loss to not explore the development of his passion for human rights and politics during such a politically tumultuous time in Taiwan's history--particularly when The Boy from Clearwater explores his time in prison after he was wrongly arrested for his supposed political affiliations. Tsai Kun-Lin was largely portrayed as apolitical, which doesn't necessarily seem accurate to his real-life pursuits. However, this may have been influenced by the current stress on the Taiwanese people.
This would be an excellent graphic novel to introduce teenagers to the complex history of Taiwan and the suffering native Taiwanese people endured during the rotating occupations of the 19th and 20th centuries. With the continued turmoil in Taiwan, this novel couldn't have come out at a better time.
The second tome of The Boy from Clearwater is set to release in May 2024.

China's sanctions on Taiwan: US's Punishment
Tumblr media
China is imposing sanctions on Taiwan in order to give the US a punishment. China has now issued visa bans and several other sanctions on Tuesday. The restrictions are imposed on seven Taiwanese political figures. Taiwan stands as a self-governing island that has much pressure due to the constant visits by the US. There had been a prior restriction that China has imposed on the US as Pelosi visited Taiwan. These sanctions are imposed by China a day after it announced more military exercises in the sea and sky. These restrictions were announced the same day when a US congressional delegation met with Tsai Ing-wen, the Taiwanese President. This is similar to the visit that Pelosi has taken forth. Pelosi has been the highest-level member of the US government to visit Taiwan in 25 years. The Chinese government shares its opinion by objecting Taiwan to keeping any relations with the foreign government. It has been said that the other foreign governments which have visited Taiwan think of it as their territory. The recent past is exemplary of chaos when it has been threatened to take the island of Taiwan under military control. China's sanctions on Taiwan: US's Punishment The congressional delegation which visited Taiwan earlier this month, the US reports that this is something to which China has overreacted with its provocative response while imposing sanctions which was not necessary. The sanctions are imposed on Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the US, Bikhim Hsiao, Legislators Ker Chien-ming, Koo Li-hsiung, Tsai Chi-chang, Chen Jiau-hua, and Wang Ting-yu along with the activist Lin Fei-fan. They have been restricted to travel to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. The Work Office of the Communist Party of Taiwan mentions that any financial or personal connections with people and other entities on the mainland are barred. The consequences will shower on those as resolute punishment who are to demean Taiwan’s independence. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and the leader of the legislature You Si-kun were on China’s list and it will pose more restrictions on them. China is not legally governing Taiwan so, in that case, it’s still not clear what effect these sanctions will bring. Cancers, Vol. 11, Pages 128: Karnofsky Performance Status as A Predictive Factor for Cancer-Related Fatigue Treatment with Astragalus Polysaccharides (PG2) Injection—A Double Blind, Multi-Center, Randomized Phase IV Study

Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom in patients with advanced cancer, resulting in poor quality of life and reduced treatment efficacy. Phytotherapeutic agents have shown potential effects to relieve cancer-related fatigue in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Astragalus Polysaccharides injection and identify predictive factors associated with this treatment. Patients with advanced cancer receiving palliative care with moderate to severe cancer-related fatigue were enrolled in this study for two treatment cycles. Fatigue improvement response rates were analyzed as the primary endpoint at the end of the first cycle to determine treatment efficacy. The drug safety profile was evaluated by the reporting of adverse events. Three hundred and ten patients were enrolled in this study and 214 patients were included ITT population. Improvement in fatigue scores by at least 10% was observed in greater than 65% of subjects after one treatment cycle compared to scores at baseline. Patients with higher Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) responded better to the Astragalus Polysaccharides injection. Drug-related adverse event rates were less than 9%. This study identified KPS as a promising predictive factor for the therapeutic efficacy of Astragalus Polysaccharides injection.

At least six killed, 60 missing after quake rocks Taiwan tourist area
HUALIEN, Taiwan (Reuters) – Rescuers combed the rubble of collapsed buildings on Wednesday, in a search for about 60 people missing after a strong earthquake killed at least six near Taiwan’s popular tourist city of Hualien.
The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city just before midnight (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, also injured 258 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said.
Hualien Mayor Fu Kun-chi said the number of people missing was now close to 60, although an exact figure was not provided. As many as 150 were initially feared missing.
Many of the missing were believed to be still trapped inside buildings, some of which were tilting precariously, after the quake hit about 22 km (14 miles) northeast of Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast.
At the city’s Marshal Hotel, rescuers trying to free two trapped Taiwanese pulled out one alive, but the other person was declared dead, the government said.
Among the injured were mainland Chinese, Czech, Japanese, Singaporean and South Korean nationals.
“This is the worst earthquake in the history of Hualien, or at least over the past 40 years that I’ve been alive,” said volunteer Yang Hsi Hua.
“We’ve never had anything like this, we’ve never had a building topple over. Also, it was constantly shaking, so everyone was really scared, we ran to empty open spaces to avoid it.”
Aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 5.0 could rock the island in the next two weeks, the government said. Smaller tremors rattled nervous residents throughout the day.
Residents waited and watched anxiously as emergency workers dressed in fluorescent orange and red suits and wearing helmets searched for residents trapped in apartment blocks.
Hualien is home to about 100,000 people. Its streets were buckled by the force of the quake, with around 40,000 homes left without water and around 1,900 without power. Water supply had returned to nearly 5,000 homes by noon (0400 GMT), while power was restored to around 1,700 households.

DAMAGE, PANIC
Emergency workers surrounded a badly damaged 12-storey residential building, a major focus of the rescue effort. Windows had collapsed and the building was wedged into the ground at a roughly 40-degree angle.
Rescuers worked their way around and through the building while residents looked on from behind cordoned-off roads. Others spoke of the panic when the earthquake struck.
“We were still open when it happened,” said Lin Ching-wen, who operates a restaurant near a damaged military hospital.
“I grabbed my wife and children and we ran out and tried to rescue people,” he said.
A Reuters video showed large cracks in the road, while police and emergency services tried to help anxious people roaming the streets. A car sat submerged in rubble as rescue workers combed through the ruins of a nearby building.
President Tsai Ing-wen went to the scene of the quake early on Wednesday to help direct rescue operations.
“The president has asked the cabinet and related ministries to immediately launch the ‘disaster mechanism’ and to work at the fastest rate on disaster relief work,” Tsai’s office said in a statement.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and major Apple supplier, said initial assessments indicated no impact from the earthquake.
Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers part of its territory, lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck nearby on Sunday.
More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and some Taiwanese remain scarred by a 7.6 magnitude quake that was felt across the island and killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
