Calypsonian Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts), London, England, 1956. He had taken the stage name "Kitchener" as a teenager. Born in Arima in 1922, he had resolved that, despite a lifelong stammer, he was going to make his fortune as a calypsonian. "Lord" was a title awarded by his fans. He left Trinidad in 1947 and, after short stays in Aruba and Jamaica, moved to England in June 1948. He arrived in the UK aboard the MV Empire Windrush, the vessel that took the first substantial group of postwar West Indian immigrants to Britain. He was one of the 73 Trinidadians on the ship - the majority were Jamaican - and he stayed for 14 years. Kitchener introduced the calypso to Britain. His first weeks in England were spent singing to bemused audiences in pubs, but within six months he had broken into the London nightclub circuit with his own band. The key to his success was an ability to reach beyond the Caribbean diaspora - indeed, Princess Margaret reputedly bought 100 copies of his Ah Bernice to send to friends. With his earnings, he opened his own club in Manchester in 1958. But he retained his links with home. Throughout his stay, he sent songs back to Trinidad for the annual Carnival; and, in London, he was part of the milieu which gave birth to the Notting Hill carnival in the late 1960s. By the time he moved back to Trinidad in late 1962 - after T&T gained independence - he had become a revered link with the prewar calypsonian tradition. He took his homeland by storm. -Photo by Popperfoto via Getty Images . . . #lordkitchener #aldwynroberts #calypsonian #calypso #ttmusic #tttalent #tthistory #vintagetrinidad . On this day 55 years ago —18 April 1966— Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie came to Trinidad on a four-day visit. He’d been invited by T&T’s first prime minister Dr. Eric Williams who, the year before, had gone to Ethiopia as part of a nine-nation African tour three years after T&T gained political independence from Britain. To facilitate the Emperor’s trip, Williams coordinated a Caribbean tour that also included Jamaica, Haiti, and Barbados. Selassie was welcomed by thousands of people at Piarco Airport, greeted by Governor General Solomon Hochoy, and given a 21-gun Imperial Salute by 150 officers of the T&T Regiment. His first stop from the airport was the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Arouca where he read an excerpt from the Scriptures, then closed the Book with what was described as a “strikingly fervent kiss”. The Emperor also met with representatives of various faiths, and made a donation for a foundation in one of the poorer areas of the country. When Selassie visited the Parliament, he urged the representatives of the people to look beyond the confines of their sectarian concerns to embrace national and international interests. He also visited The University of the West Indies, laid a wreath at the Cenotaph at Memorial Square, paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Port-of-Spain Edward Taylor and the San Fernando Borough Council, and attended a Cultural Rally at the Queen’s Park Oval. On his final day, in Tobago, he visited a Ethiopian Orthodox Church service. Credit: @dominickalipersad . #Repost @dominickalipersad • • • • • • Siparia was an Amerindian settlement that became the site of a Spanish mission and a Capuchin pilgrimage church which houses La Divina Pastora, a statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue is venerated by Roman Catholics as well as Hindus, who see it as representing Mother Lakshmi or the Goddess Kali. Holy Thursday and Good Friday at La Divina Pastora bear the imprint of Hindu devotional religion or bhakti. For Catholics the centre of these two days is Christ; for Hindus it is Sopari Mai. The two devotions have been taking place side by side for over one hundred years. Roman Catholic priest Fr. John Thomas Harricharan, in an article on La Divina Pastora, wrote that the statue was brought to Trinidad around 1730 by Spanish Capuchin monks fleeing persecution in South America. Hindus believe that Soparee K Mai, which means Mother of Siparia, represents the Goddesses Durga and Kali. Goddess Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the creation, and Kali is a manifestation of the Divine Mother, which represents the female principle. Commenting on the multi-cultural aspects of worship to La Divina Pastora, RC priest Fr. Martin Sirju, said: "I think it is a miracle in itself... This festival has led to racial cooperation and there are not many places in the world where you'll find two important Christian holidays being observed by two groups-Christians and Hindus. This shows ethnic and religious tolerance.” . Trinidadian jazz pianist Russell “Russ” Henderson was a leading figure in the steelband movement in Britain who helped set up the Notting Hill Carnival. Born Russell Audley Ferdinand Henderson in Belmont in 1924 to Arnott, an accountant, and Evelyn, he learned to play the piano by mimicking his two older sisters. In 1948 his quartet won an island-wide musical contest. In 1951, Henderson moved to Britain with an intention to train as a piano-tuner but he ended up playing the piano in Soho dives. Adept in an array of instruments, he fused jazz with calypso; steelbands with piano sets. His piano style was distinctive. Henderson took to the steelpan after the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) took the UK by storm in 1951. Before long, he formed a nightclub trio with two fellow Trinidadians, Sterling Betancourt and Max Cherrie, and by 1952, they introduced Trinidadian steelpans into their act. Henderson played the piano for the calypsonian Lord Kitchener on records, accompanied the singer George Browne (Young Tiger) in cabaret, and was embraced by a prewar generation of Caribbean and African musicians. When the trio performed for a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace, they made history as the first steelband to play for royalty. Henderson also lectured on the steelpan in schools and at the Commonwealth Institute in London. He organised workshops and larger percussion ensembles, while remaining in demand for social functions. He travelled regularly to Europe and, latterly, divided his time between London and Spain, returning to Trinidad each year for carnival. In 2006, Henderson was appointed MBE for services to music. In 2012, he was immortalised, while still living, with a plaque on Tavistock Square, where his contribution to the carnival was recognised. Born January 7, 1924, Henderson died August 18, 2015. [Trinidad & Tobago History🇹🇹] On this day 51 years ago, as part of the Black Power Revolution (now being called the Trinidad and Tobago Revolution), the march to Caroni took place on March 12, 1970, when thousands of people, mainly African-Trinidadian, went to Central Trinidad in a gesture of solidarity. There was a massive banner which said “Indians and Africans Unite Now”. The slogan became a permanent fixture. The day before, NJAC leader Makandal Daaga, then called Geddes Granger, announced that NJAC and the people were going to march to Caroni. The principle of national unity was the objective. @dominickalipersad Kalipersad . . #blackpower #ttrevolution #revolution #marchtocaroni #indiansandafricansunite #racialunity #diversity #culture #tthistory #vintagetrinidad . #carnival #trinidad #soca #trinidadandtobago #carnivalcruise #trinidadcarnival #socamusic #carnivalparty #socatrucks https://www.instagram.com/p/CMW9Kq_BlLJ/?igshid=63c6zilfvpv6
