SHARING OF THE GREEN - A SONG OF GREENWOOD . What an incredible story; what an incredible journey! We’ve been working on our musical, “A Song of Greenwood” (based on the events surrounding the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921) since 1997, with a very focused rewrite process over the past 3 years. As the Centennial commemoration draws near, each day is full of surprises and new open doors and opportunities. Stay tuned. Our page should start poppin’ this summer and we start the yearlong countdown & start to share peeks at our development process. . #LoJoWerkz #LoJoWerkzDailyDope #DAILYDOPE #ASongofGreenwood #SharingoftheGreen #TulsaRaceMaccacre #NewMusicals #BroadwayBlack #TulsaRaceMassacreCentennial #Greenwood #BlackWallStreet #TulsaHistory #StPatricksDay https://www.instagram.com/p/B92rnM0l8l_/?igshid=1x4pefm3493ej

It was 20 years ago that my first full book musical hit the stage in Tulsa, OK. I was young & green and in way over my head when it came to writing and producing a new musical but I knew this was a story my creating partner and I were meant to tell. So we did. . The musical is a story born of both fact & fiction, an interracial relationship which led to the greatest act of homegrown terrorism in our country’s history - mass murder and the burning of the world’s wealthiest African-American community, the legendary Black Wall Street & Greenwood business district. While our show is not a historic retelling, it is a story built firmly around the historic facts. We’ve been blessed to have unfettered access to both the remaining survivors of the tragedy (almost all of whom have passed away now.) and the nation’s leading historians and scholars on the subject who were writing the official Tulsa Race Riot Commission Report at the same time we were writing the musical. The show received high praise from both groups as well as audiences. This is an important topic and an important show. Its an amazing feeling to reach this next milestone. . As the Centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 approaches, we’ve brought all our years of knowledge & training as musical playwrights to bear. After more than two years of quietly hammering away in the LoJoLab to rewrite the show top to bottom, the “Centennial Reconstruction” is now finally assembled and we’re entering the next stage of development: Demos, Readings, ongoing edits, Score Workshops and, of course, proposal writing and fundraising (two other art forms entirely. lol.) . The journey is a long one and there is presently no guarantee it will ever go up in front of an audience, but we welcome all those who will follow us, check in on us over the next 18 months and those who might join with us & support us in this journey! A glimpse into some LoJoLab werkzing. Here’s some of the charts & graphs we use daily to aid us in the massive task of creating an original work of Musical Theatre like “A Song of Greenwood.” (Don’t look too closely, hahaha, there’s some spoilers lurking in there.) . (Included: Charts for mapping single character arcs scene by scene; a to-do list/progress chart of the roughly 75 individual scene segments and songs that needed to be rewritten - including a rating of the difficulty of the task; a chart of demos that need to be recorded, including which characters per song and the extent, i.e. solos, duets, trios or chorus, all prioritized by immediate need for demos; and lastly, a potential scene-cutting chart of each scene/song - rated for how connected it is to plot, character development, entertainment value and level of craftsmanship… this is because musical are almost always too long at the outset and are constantly being cut. Its a difficult, painful process, but this chart makes those decisions easier to judge.) . Hopefully the audience will never detect the years of detailed work that goes into the process, they’ll just sit in the seats and experience the joys, laughs, drama, sorrow and heightened emotions that make Musical Theatre one of the greatest of all American art forms! #LoJoWerkz #LoJoWerkzDailyDope #DAILYDOPE #ASongofGreenwood #NewMusicals #LoJoMusicalWerkz #ASongofGreenwood #TulsaRaceMassacreof1921 #TulsaHistory #BlackWallStreet #Greenwood https://www.instagram.com/p/B2STiI5Fe36/?igshid=uqt2exnucad9

So if we created the first version of ASOG over 20 years ago, how can we call it “A New Musical?!!” —- 15 new or totally rewritten songs, 7 new/expanded characters, thousands of rewritten/reconstructed lyrics, newly written dialog, new scenes and restructured moments. (If you saw the original stagings, this version will feel familiar with the same basic storylines, high-energy, 1920s Jazz-based musical numbers, fast-paced comedy, soaring ballads and heart-wrenching tragedy…with the same overall spirit of unity and hope.) Even though we’ve continued to tweak ASOG over the years, reshaping and restructuring it with the knowledge we gained from our Broadway mentors, we never knew what the future would hold for this musical, if it would ever be staged again. In the back of our minds we harbored hopes we’d be able to do something as the centennial came around. Fingers crossed! . About three years ago we were made aware of possible funding that might become available for Tulsa Race Massacre art projects. The competition to receive those funds will no doubt be very high (a GOOD thing that so many artists are interested in this subject!!!) and we have no idea if or when any funding will secured, but this encouragement from a supporter was enough of a spark to reignite the creative embers. We made the decision to devote ourselves fully to the multi-year task of finalizing all our collected ideas and scraps of writing. The “Centennial Reconstruction” is now finally assembled and we’re entering the next stage of development: Demos, table readings, ongoing edits, score workshops and, of course, proposal writing and fundraising (two other art forms entirely. lol.) . The journey is a long one and there is presently no guarantee it will ever go up in front of an audience, but we welcome all those who will follow us, check in on us over the next 18 months and those who might join with us & support us in this journey! A BRIEF HISTORY We began working on “A Song of Greenwood” in 1996. With the help and encouragement of the Greenwood Cultural Center where we were conducting hip hop dance classes. (the idea grew out of a plan for a year-end dance performance.) We had been writing and producing smaller-scaled stage performances for several years but this was our first full book musical and honestly, we were absolutely clueless about the craft. All we knew is that this was a story we HAD to tell, a vague sense of our “creative voice” and a fuzzy knowledge of the historic language of Musical Theatre that was lodged in our nostalgic memories. We collected a group of like-minded performers, many of whom had little or no experience in Musical Theatre and engaged in the proverbial “let’s put on a show” thing… but rooted in a very serious sense of purpose l. . We learned basically by doing (and help from many more knowledgable folks in our local Arts communities.) By 2001, we had learned what worked and didn’t work on stage. We benefited from the generous insights of the Race Massacre survivors and the nation’s top “Race Riot” scholars and historians who had gathered in Tulsa as part of the commission tasked with creating the official historic account of the event. Again, the cast, crew and support team were phenomenal. . Three years later our paths would cross with Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz who would became our teacher and mentor. We finally began seriously learning the craft… which we applied over the years as we’d pull out ASOG every couple years for rewrites and tweaks. #LoJoWerkz #LoJoWerkzDailyDope #DAILYDOPE #ASongofGreenwood #NewMusicals #LoJoMusicalWerkz #ASongofGreenwood #TulsaRaceMassacreof1921 #TulsaHistory #BlackWallStreet #Greenwood https://www.instagram.com/p/B2STGxElxBq/?igshid=d4m9nzjcdwpq

REMEMBERING THE TULSA RACE MASSACRE of 1921 For over two decades I’ve gradually and consistently collected the puzzle pieces of the history of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. During these years I’ve developed the fictional, but historically informed characters who inhabit the stylized world of “A Song of Greenwood” the first full book musical I first started working on in 1996. Discovering the ugly, hidden history of our country can be off-putting, gut-wrenching and heart-breaking but I’ve found that the deeper we dig, the more unifying humanity we find. Its the constant discovery of the smallest details that fascinates me as a writer/composer. It also serves as the entryway into the minds of those on both sides of this defining event in my city’s history. The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 has also become one of the most powerful defining events in my own journey as well. If you don’t know about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, fire up your google fingers and prepare to be jaw-dropped. In 2021 there will, no doubt, be many artistic explorations of the event as we mark the 100th anniversary. REMEMBERING THE TULSA RACE MASSACRE of 1921 Twenty-one years ago today the curtain rose on the first full book musical I ever wrote, “A Song of Greenwood” based on the events surrounding the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. The endless discovery process continues to this day. Each year I gain new insights on this seminal event, both externally (as more of the long-covered-up evidence comes to light and gets confirmed) and internally (as the ugliest & most neglected corners of the human soul - and the American soul - become more clear to me personally.) The rewrite/restructure/rebuild of my musical “A Song of Greenwood” is entering the final stretches as we explore the possibilities of how we’ll present it to the public in 2021. At its heart, “A Song of Greenwood” is a traditionally joyous work of Musical Comedy… which suddenly spirals violently into depths of tragedy and resurfaces again with a sober, bittersweet embrace of hope and unity. We have worked tenaciously to make it a well-crafted work of musical theatre, but even more important, this work is a gift; a gift to my own soul as a fact-based world in which to explore human nature, and a gift Jerome and I can leave to our community. If you’re unaware of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 (fka “The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921” - do yourself a favor and google it today in honor of all that was lost on this day in 1921.) #TuTchT #TuTchTIMAGING #ThruTuTchTEyes #TulsaRaceMassacreof1921 #TulsaHistory #ASongofGreenwood #LoJoWerkz #TulsaRaceRiot #1921 #RememberingtheTulsaRaceMassacre #Tulsa #TulsaHistory #TulsaRaceMassacreResearch #WeAreMadeByHistory https://www.instagram.com/p/ByLtVKLl4dN/?igshid=ndeozz3nkeky

REMEMBERING THE TULSA RACE MASSACRE of 1921 (The details of this event, considered perhaps the most costly home-grown terrorist event in the country’s history, were omitted from all Oklahoma history books and systematically covered-up until the 1970s) LUKE 12: 1-5 (KJV) 1) I…(Jesus) began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2) For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3) Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4) And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5) But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. #TuTchT #TuTchTIMAGING #ThruTuTchTEyes #TulsaRaceMassacreof1921 #TulsaHistory #ASongofGreenwood #LoJoWerkz #TulsaRaceRiot #1921 #RememberingtheTulsaRaceMassacre #Tulsa #WeAreMadeByHistory https://www.instagram.com/p/ByLtO-WlmpK/?igshid=me2heocsrfiu
