Tutorial Review: “My YouTube Setup” If you’re thinking about developing a YouTube channel, “My YouTube Setup: How I Make Videos with an iPhone” is a good place to start. Created by UK-based YouTuber @Spawnpoiint, this 18-minute tutorial covers all the basics—including idea development, scripting, shooting, recording, and editing— in a way that’s personal, clear, and practical. Spawnpoiint—a.k.a. “Chris”—takes the minimalist approach. For example his traveling kit contains just three items: camera (phone), tripod, and gimbal. The challenge is getting good production values on a modest budget. Chris has figured out how to do it, and how to enable others to use his methods. Tutorial review: “The Art of the Opening Scene” This 15-minute tutorial from @StudioBinder covers six techniques for grabbing audiences at the fade-in. Scenes taken from relatively recent films—such as “Skyfall” and “Marriage Story”—illustrate the ideas. While the examples come from big-budget movies, the suggestions apply to any story, whatever the budget. While some cases the focus is on the opening sequence rather than just one scene, that doesn’t detract from the valuable insights into creating compelling film openings. Tutorial Review: “Tips on shooting an interview with one camera.” Interviews can be standalone movies or elements embedded in other forms, such as documentaries, instructional videos, vlogs, and commercials. The key to making interviews visually interesting is to include shots from a variety of angles. This is easy if you have two cameras. But with a bit of planning, it can be done using one camera. Anthony Q. Artis shows how to do it in this fast-paced, four-and-a-half-minute tutorial. Of special value are Artis’s insights regarding the risks of attempting to achieve a multi-camera look. While he uses a conventional camera, all his tricks can be done You can see the tutorial at https://youtu.be/E26xv-bZfUU #tutorialreview #filminterviews #cinematography https://www.instagram.com/p/CHyvayShkDY/?igshid=17i7z9d8mhuji

Tutorial Review: “10 Top Tips for Filming in Sunlight” You need light to create video images. The sun is obviously a terrific light source. But as with many things in life, too much can be…too much. To solve that problem, UK filmmaker Rob Leach offers 10 easy-to-master solutions. Some of the tips require only common sense, for example, finding a shady spot to film in or orienting your actors away from the sunlight so that they won’t squint. Others techniques require inexpensive gear such as a diffusion screen. The FiLMiC Pro camera app (@filmicapps) also comes into play. Tutorial Review: “Get a Sci-Fi Look with Dry Ice & Fog! Usually, the script will tell you which visual effects you need. But this tutorial by @Ryan_Connolly may motivate you to first have fun making fog and smoke, and then devise scenes that use the stuff. Throughout the six-minute video, Connolly warns that dry ice can be dangerous. You need to wear gloves and treat the ice with respect. If you’re risk averse, you can use regular ice although the fog won’t be as…foggy. You can see this really entertaining tutorial at https://youtu.be/APTf1HwzRR4 If you have a favorite movie fog scene, we invite you to tell us about it. #tutorialreview #filmfog #visualeffects https://www.instagram.com/p/CDcVQWZJUwv/?igshid=v8juzxrzkwy8

Tutorial Review: “Let’s talk about Directing Short Films” This is not a direct-by-numbers presentation: Step 1…Step 2…Step 3… Instead, Film Riot’s @ryan_connolly illuminates the director’s role by discussing what he did while directing a recently completed film—“The Wandering Soul.” Although the lesson zigs and zags, by the end of the 15-minute tutorial, Connolly manages to cover all the directorial tasks found in pre-production, production, and post production. As always, Connolly style is engaging. His passion for filmmaking is on full display. An exponent of collaboration, he clearly admires members of the team he put together. In the most memorable moment of the video, he describes an unplanned meeting with his lead actor. During breakfast before the shoot, they engaged in a discussion that built trust and a shared understanding of the story. The frames here were created by @CineTracer, an app that Connolly uses for previsualization. Tutorial Review: “Become A Better Filmmaker in 90 Seconds…For Real” There’s a bit of ambiguity in the title of this tutorial. You won’t become a better filmmaker in 90 seconds, but you will get a well-thought-out plan for practicing the art of filmmaking. By implementing the suggestions of Colin and Samir, there’s a good chance that over days, weeks, months, and years, your moviemaking skills will improve. It’s is astonishing how much useful information is packed into this one-and-a-half-minute presentation. Moreover, you won’t find a better demonstration of the value of b-roll. Spoiler alert: While the video certainly qualifies as a tutorial, it’s also a promotion for an hour-long lesson titled “YouTube Storytelling: How to Make Videos that People Share.” The program from @Moment costs $75. If it’s as good as the commercial, it’ll be a bargain. Tutorial Review: “Location Scouting? Watch this FIRST!” As the title of his tutorial makes clear, Darious Britt (@d4darious) is confident about the knowledge he shares. While you can find plenty of other helpful videos on location scouting, this one has to be the most personal and fun. In six and a half minutes Darious gives his own spin to the basics such as bring a camera when you’re scouting; use a sun tracker app; listen for ambient audio problems (planes, trains, & automobiles); look for visual possibilities not in the script; and be sure to get permits if required. Tutorial Review: “How to Film Yourself” Why does @PeterMcKinnon have more than four million YouTube subscribers? It’s probably because he brings an outrageous amount of energy and humor to the screen. More important, his advice is rock solid. In “How to Film Yourself” McKinnon presents three big tips for filming a project when you don’t have a crew. In other words, this is about solo filmmaking that achieves high production values. After you view this 6.5-minute video, you’ll be able to star in your own short movie without any help and with very little gear (mainly a tripod). You can see McKinnon’s tutorial at https://youtu.be/dEfwjZZeBC4 If you want examples of solo moviemaking, check out the work of Oliver Richards (@olsburger) whose work we’ve featured here. #mobilemoviemaking #tutorialreview #cinematography #solofilmmaking https://www.instagram.com/p/B9KyrFnpPYX/?igshid=1cinn2ejf0sw4
