Bound for the @renegadepublishing Tiny Book Bang. Typeset by @admiraltypress. I brought this typeset as uncut sheets with me to @fantailpress's for a @renegadepublishing meetup where we practiced suminagashi in Rhi's yard. In the sweltering heat, if I remember correctly. I don't think I even marbled this... I remember @marvinhere was in town, I think she marbled the text for me.

WIP - Bredlik Poems Anthology

Part II

Another Bredlik compilation cased in and ready for cover decoration. This time I forgot to take pictures in between and of the separate cover. I should have spent more time paring the leather more thoroughly at the turn-ins though. You can clearly see how it looks sort of knobby and bulges, despite being only 0,5mm (that’s 0,2 inches) thick. On a larger book I might have been forgiven being lazy, but at this size it shows.

Next up is titling and and decoration.

btw the QR codes still work at this size. I think that’s pretty awesome

This typeset was shared with me complete with doodles and QR-codes. I can only admire the amount of time and patience that has gone into collecting those and creating the QR-codes only to re-visit and have those wonderful doodles added. It was a joy and pleasure to bind and read them while doing so.

WIP - Bredlik Poems Anthology  Part I (of the even tinier one)

Because I’m a show off I wanted to see if I could go even smaller. So I took the signatures imposed for A4 and printed them on A5.

This one too is backed as if for a fine binding (in fact it will get a separate case as well though. I just don’t have the tools to work in a place this small). Standing less than one inch tall the text is still readable and the QR codes work as well! (A magnifier helps with the reading though XD) From an objective and technical point of view it’s not good work. Backing is less than satisfactory for example. There wasn’t even space in the press for a hammer to nudge the signatures in shape and they don’t have 90° angled shoulders (as they should). I still have fun with this wee little thing. 

(The last shot shows the text block next to the one bound in blue leather for comparison.)

Absolutely in love with the epic & ongoing bredlik project by @marvinhere over on the @renegadepublishing Discord. This is actually my second (third?) binding, the other one (two?) started back in February but currently languishing in WIP hell. Not quite the floppy, snuggly cow book I wanted/had in mind but it's a good start. Happy to have figured out a construction method for those legs I like & will improve upon next time.

This is volume 3, the poems wrangled and typeset by @marvinhere with illustrations by the mysterious Jenny (IG: thimblejuice). The Discord has been sharing every poem members come across as well as crafting some on the fly. The whole thing is a joyful project and in addition to Marvin's own binding (shared on Discord), @zhalfirin has bound two exquisite copies of it as well [1][2].

Am suuuuper psyched for the next volume currently in the works, so you can expect a herd of these babies at some point!

Design and troubleshooting

With an anthology of bredliks I definitely wanted to go for something cow-ish on the covers. I went to Google for pictures and, after a short search I found that Google has a disappointing amount of cow licking things silhouettes! So I searched for normal pictures, traced the ones I liked with sketchpaper to check which one would make a good silhouette, copied them to a usable size and started cutting. 

In the process of cutting and gluing and finishing covers, I ran into the problem of mixing up my covers (I’m working at two at the same time). Which would be no problem at all, if they weren’t slightly different sizes and now the overhang was a bit short. With the real threat of hinges being able to ‘shrink’ I decided to sand the front of the already cut and rounded book body. 

On the upside is the sanded book body, on the downside the other one that didn’t need sanding. It really makes quite a difference, but I just can’t get myself to sand front edges without a really good reason  (meaning, either wanting to paint it or fearing the result would look crappy if I don’t)
