Tour de France Femmes - Stage 4

Finally we get some topography, as the third day of this Tour de France Femmes crosses from the Netherlands into Belgium to tackle some of the most famous climbs in the spring classics. Silvia Persico (UAE Team ADQ) took full points at the top of the Cauberg and the Geulhemmerberg in the early portiosn of the race.

Sara Martín of Movistar made a solo attack that stayed away for quite a while. Behind her, Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich-postNL) won the sprint for second to add to her points classification.

Interestingly, during Martín's solo attack, there was actually a train delay at a level crossing, something we haven't seen in the World Tour recently, but the commissaires kept track of the time and after a minute or two the race was back on.

Martín was brought back by the peloton on the slopes of the Mont-Theux, and there was a lively competition for mountain points, in which Fenix-Deceuninck was quite active. Yara Kastelijn took maximum points on Mont-Theux, and then her teammate Puck Pieterse led the climb up the Côte de La Redoute, with Kastelijn and Pauliena Rooijakkers close behind. Kastelijn couldn't quite keep up at the end, so Pieterse went through to take the points, and continued to drive the pace.

With the bunch reduced down to about 30 riders, the pace ratcheted up, driven by Niamh Fisher-Black and Vallières Mill of SD Worx-Protime. At the top of the Côte des Forges. Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal) edged out Kastelijn for maximum points, and she attacked on the descent, staying away for a while.

The decisive move happened on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons, as it often does in Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) tried to sneak away off the front, but SD Worx shut it down fast, and Demi Vollering increased her pace so that only Rooijakkers, Piertse and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) could stay with her.

Eventually Rooijakkers couldn't stay with the leaders, and it was down to Vollering, Niewiadoma, and Pieterse. The trio worked well together through the final kilometers. Niewiadoma launched an early sprint around 700m that was very on-brand for her but probably hurt her chances at the line. Vollering closed the gap with Pieterse in her wheel, and then Pieterse jumped to launcher own sprint. Even then, it was a long one, and she and Vollering had a long drag race to he line, but Pieterse held her off to take the stage.

This was a fun stage to watch, it was exciting throughout, and Pieterse looked incredibly strong the whole time. She had the best spring, even after leading out several of the climbs. It seemed like she was working for her teammate, Rooijakkers, but when given the go-ahead, she was definitely the strongest on the day.
