Margaret Franklin from the heart of Ireland, Athlone shares this fantastic family heirloom owned by her late father Alan who used to read Ulysses to her. Part of the green dustcover has turned a dusty brown but Margaret dusts off the book each June to read Ulysses on Bloomsday in places like Burgess Park and Athlone Castle. It is a 1949 reprint of the first unlimited edition published by Bodley Head in 1937. You can also see her father's name neatly written on the title page. COMPLICATED GRAFFITI I got on a near empty bus and saw my friend down the end so went to join him. Sitting on the opposite side of the bus, he called me over to show me the most complicated graffiti that I've ever seen in my life. Someone had scratched out Ulises on the back of a bus seat where my friend just happened to have sat down. There didn't seem to be any other graffiti to be seen on the bus. Someone had taken the effort to scratch out Ulysses in Spanish and add some decorative squiggles. Bye bye By-Line Hemingway was put on hold to pick up Ulysses and I was reminded of this when I looked at this 1941 edition of Ulysses on top of By-Line. I was about 100 pages into By-Line and 100 pages into a book about The Troubles in Northern Ireland called Say Nothing. Almost 100 days later, I only have 100 pages left in my Wordsworth Edition of Ulysses as we approach the centenary celebration on Groundhog Day. ON TRACK AND GETTING THERE I took a late train on Tuesday night and took out my copy of Ulysses to try and read a few pages of my book when I noticed a slightly inebriated person trying to take a peek at the cover. He kept trying to look underneath to see what I was reading and when he saw that it was Ulysses, he started asking if it was the Spanish version Ulisses or the original version. Turns out Pedro had read half of Ulisses before abandoning the book. 500 pages in, I've broken the back of the book and am on track to finish it by the centenary celebration on Groundhog Day.
