Kommentar per UMTS aus einem fahrenden Taxi!

Bei der Arbeit am "20 Jahre Riesenmaschine"-PDF im Mai und Juni 2025 finde ich viele Kommentare im Redaktionsbereich, die davon handeln, wie und von wo wir gerade am Riesenmaschine-Blog arbeiten. Vor allem aber davon, warum wir es nicht tun können.

Alan Smithee, 22. Juni 2006, aus Klagenfurt: "So, zack, alles gut, es gibt hier erstmals W-LAN und ich habe den Laptop dabei, es wird also kaum einen Ausfall geben, vermutlich oder auch doch, wenn ich beim Bürgermeisterempfang zuviel trinke."

Das W-LAN gibt es im ORF-Pressecafé, einem fensterlosen Raum im ORF-Sendehaus.

Aleks Scholz, 21. Juli 2006: "Kathrin und ich sind übrigens von heute nachmittag bis Montag nur selten hier, je nach WLAN Dichte."

Wir befinden uns in Berlin, aber ich habe seit dem Modemdiebstahl im Jahr 2001 nur im Büro Internet, und mein Handy wird mich erst ab Februar 2007 mit Internet versorgen können.

Alan Smithee, 24. Juli 2006: "ICH FASS ES NICHT, ich fummel seit zwei Tagen auf dem Flur meiner Grosseltern neben der Telefonbuchse sitzend mit einer 50KByte-Verbindung rum und entdecke am Abend vor meiner Abfahrt, dass es auf der Terrasse kostenloses WLAN gibt."

Ein anderer Alan Smithee, 5. Oktober 2006: "Achso, Alan und Alan können ja gar nicht antworten, WLAN kostet ja auf der [Buchmesse] 79 Euros pro Tag." Einer der Erwähnten: "Wohl können wir antworten. Haben uns ins Pressezentrum eingehackt, heute aber eine Menge Termine."

"Eingehackt" ist hier ziemlich sicher nicht technisch gemeint, sondern heißt wahrscheinlich "ein journalistisches Gesicht gemacht und hineingegangen". Ob das Internet auf der Buchmesse wirklich 79 Euro pro Tag kostete, weiß ich 2025 nicht mehr. Wundern würde es mich aber nicht.

11. September 2006: Kathrin Passig: "Meine erste Internet-Amtshandlung von zu Hause seit vielen, vielen Jahren!" Alan Smithee: "Diese Äusserung ist eine Sensation auf viele verschiede Arten und bedeutet den Anbruch eines neuen Zeitalters!"

"Seit vielen, vielen Jahren" heißt, seit 2001 mein Modem gestohlen wurde. Wie es zu diesem kurzen Moment des Zu-Hause-Internets kam, ist nicht überliefert und ich erinnere mich 2025 auch nicht daran. Internet aus meinem Handy hatte ich erst ab Februar 2007.

9. November 2006: Kathrin Passig: "Hurra! Internet im Hotel! Und nur 10 Euro pro Tag! Grüsse aus dem schönen Klagenfurt!" Alan Smithee: "Grüsse aus Hamburg. Kein Internet im Hotel." Aleks Scholz: "Grüsse immer noch aus Pasadena, immer noch 9 Dollar pro Tag." Alan Smithee: "Grüsse aus dem Steakhaus Escados am Alexanderplatz. Internet: 8Eur/Std."

Kathrin Passig, 3. Januar 2007: "Mit der Ostsee hat es auf sich, dass die ZIA dort von morgen bis Samstag oder so tagt und die Weltherrschaftsbestrebungen für 2007 koordiniert. Es wird dort kein richtiges Internet geben, deshalb ist die Maschine dann unterbesetzt."

Wir sind in einem Ferienhaus, und Ferienhäuser haben zu dieser Zeit nur selten Internet.

Kathrin Passig, 4. Januar 2007: "Online per Telefon aus dem Haus an der Ostsee! Süsse, nostalgische Modemgeräusche dringen aus dem Rechner! Wir können also ab und zu hier nach dem Rechten sehen."

2025 habe ich keine Ahnung mehr, wie das gegangen sein könnte. Aber etwas Recherche ergibt, dass mein 2006 gebraucht gekauftes Apple Powerbook einen RJ-11-Port und ein eingebautes Modem gehabt haben muss. Da werden dann wohl die Geräusche rausgekommen sein.

Noch ein dritter Alan Smithee, 12. Januar 2007: "Wahnsinn. Online per UMTS im ICE nach München, irgendwo zwischen Wittenberge und Leipzig. Ein Traum wird wahr. Die 100 Milliarden waren nicht umsonst, Telekoms!"

Mit den 100 Milliarden ist die Versteigerung der UMTS-Lizenzen in Deutschland gemeint. Der Traum erweist sich als kurzlebig.

Derselbe Alan Smithee, 14. Januar 2007: "So. Nun. Ich war quasi drei Tage lang verschwunden, und das nur, weil ich unterwegs war und es irgendwie nirgendwo offenes W-Lan gab und all das. Um in Zukunft keine Entschuldigung für das Fehlen von RM-Beiträgen zu haben, habe ich soeben ein Übergangshandy (bis iphone kommt) gekauft mit UMTS-Flatrate und bin jetzt per Bluetooth-Modem im Netz. Das Tollste (für Euch): ich kann jetzt überall für jeden Internet machen mit dem W-Lan-Sharing."

Immer noch derselbe Alan Smithee, 29. Januar 2007: "Dies hier ist übrigens nach derzeitigem Stand das Yuppieskeste, was ich seit Wochen getan habe; Kommentar per UMTS aus einem fahrenden Taxi. Eventuell bin ich Tom Wolfe."

Kathrin Passig, 1. März 2007: "Flughafen, Internet am! Danke, UMTS!"

Dem "Danke, UMTS" kann man entnehmen, dass es sich nicht um Flughafen-WLAN handelt, sondern um mein eigenes Handyinternet.

Kathrin Passig am selben Tag, etwas später: "Jetzt Internet in der S-Bahn! Toll!"

Kathrin Passig, 29. März 2007: "Gerade herausgefunden, dass es in Innsbruck zwar nirgendwo Internet gibt, aber im Hotel Gratis-WLAN, und das Minuten vor der Abreise, na toll."

Das herumtragbare Internet, das ich seit wenigen Wochen habe, geht natürlich nicht in Österreich, oder nur zu grauenhaften Tarifen.

Aleks Scholz, 30. März 2007: "Bevor ichs vergesse: Ich bin von Freitag bis Montag offline (Dublin), KP wohl eher auch (Innsbruck)."

Gleicher Grund wie im vorangegangenen Zitat: Wenn man im Ausland ist, ist man offline, alle wissen das. Man braucht also nur den Ort als Begründung zu nennen.

Kathrin Passig, 27. April 2007: "Ja, ich, in Bayern und wie immer ohne Internet. Ich dachte ja, es wird besser, als meine Eltern DSL vom Nachbarn bekommen haben, aber ich muss immer noch stundenlang mit dem Laptop wie mit einer Wünschelrute durchs Haus laufen, um schliesslich auf der Küchentreppe ein paar Bits zu erhaschen. Schreibe diese Nachricht per Flaschenpost, hoffe, sie kommt an."

"Ohne Internet" bedeutet hier, dass das Haus meiner Eltern in einem Funkloch liegt, so dass mir mein mobiles Internet nichts nützt. Was das mit dem "DSL vom Nachbarn" ist, und wieso es nicht funktioniert: Unrekonstruierbar.

Aleks Scholz, 16. Juli 2007: "Neue Errungenschaft: Normaler schottischer Blechzug mit WLAN! Draussen alles voller Schafe. Gruss aus, aehm, Cupar oderso. (...) Jetzt Wiesen. Gut, ein bisschen langsam ist es, aber der Zug ist ja auch nicht schneller. Mobiles Bummelzug-Internet! Mit Steckdose! Ist das die Zukunft?"

Kathrin Passig, 12. März 2008: "Jörg Sundermeier fragte heute wieder, was wir eigentlich machen auf der Buchmesse. Aleks hatte gerade die ausgezeichnete Idee, da es dort ja sicher wieder kein Internet geben wird, ich aber eins dabei habe (via UMTS), einen Internetservice anzubieten. Und zwar einen, der genau wie die Question Box in Indien auf dem Land funktioniert, man stellt uns Fragen (die man vielleicht auf Kärtchen schreiben und in den Karton einwerfen muss), wir googeln und geben dann Auskunft oder lesen Blogs vor."

Genau so wird es dann auch gemacht.

Joining the Event: You can join the squad either by using the chat command "/sqjoin Eevee.9107" or by finding us in the RP squad LFG under "Consortium Beach Resort." You're welcome to use a Teleport-to-Friend to join if you don't want to fuss with maps. Otherwise, you can head due south from Pearl Islet Waypoint (chat code: [&BNUGAAA=] ). You can also access this area by heading south after taking the Southsun asura gate in Lion's Arch, which is flanked by a consortium officer and a lionguard NPC.

Full OOC Rules:

Adhere to the intended event tone and avoid instigating conflict. This is a role-play event, so your litmus test should be, “Would my character be asked to leave a real resort for this behavior?” If the answer is “probably,” please do not do that. I don’t want to kick anyone out, but I don’t tolerate party crashing.

OOC fighting is not permitted. Not everybody is on good terms with one another, and I don’t expect everyone to be friends, but if you have a grudge, please avoid engaging one another instead of picking a fight in this space.

Nobody is required to interact with anybody else. If someone does not want to actively RP with you (or at all!), please respect their wishes.

As the event host, I am also a role-play participant, so if you want to get involved but don’t know where to start, you’re welcome to approach me!

This is a completely open and free event - the invitations are for flavor, but it's a public location and there's no reason any character couldn't conceivably wander in and join in the festivities.
